[Bug 2065348] [NEW] python3-docker `from_env()` broken

2024-05-09 Thread Greg Stewart
Public bug reported:

I have a python script that manages some docker resources. It uses the
`from_env()` method to build the client. This script always runs as
root.

This worked in Ubuntu 22.04. However, it seems like something is
mismatched in 24.04, as I now get the following error, even after a
reboot (which seemed to solve this for others in the past?). It appears
based on cursory googling that a library version might be out of sync.

```
Traceback (most recent call last):
```

This is on a fresh 24.04 install.

Willing to help diagnose, but to replicate:

 1. `apt install docker.io python3-docker`
 2. `python3`
 3. `import docker`
 4. `docker.from_env()`

If there are two folders like below and i delete 'It's Always Sunny' it will

[Bug 1919342] Re: Stylus and touchscreen not working in kernel 5.8.0-45

2021-03-24 Thread Michael Stewart
I posted https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1921066
yesterday which was marked as a duplicate of this one, which I agree
with.

Please advise which logs are appropriate. I can boot into one of the
"bad" kernels and collect standard logs etc. while it is running but
*before* I try touching the screen with the stylus. This would give
standard info but not necessarily pinpoint the issue.

What I would really like to know is this: if I replicate the problem
(i.e. freeze the OS), will this write appropriate diagnostic info to
some log file which is then still available after a hard reboot?

[Bug 1921066] [NEW] thinkpad yoga X1 3rd gen stylus freezes OS 20.04 LTS certain kernels

2021-03-23 Thread Michael Stewart
Public bug reported:

I am running 20.04.1 LTS on a Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3rd Gen. After recent routine
kernel updates, touching the screen with the stylus freezes the whole operating
system. It is not associated with a single application or package (I guess it
is the kernel package, see below). I am running the default ubuntu desktop
environment.

I recently switched from fedora 33 on this same machine, and this
problem occurred with it too. I "solved" it by simply loading an earlier
kernel, and trying each updated kernel version until the problem did not
occur.

The problem occurs with the following ubuntu kernels:

5.8.0-45-generic
5.8.0-48-generic

It does *not* occur with

5.8.0-44-generic

Please advise what other debugging info I can supply. I am sorry I did
not take note of the kernel versions that did or did not experience the
problem in fedora, although I note that fedora 33 also seems to be using
the same 5.8 series.

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: [HP EliteOne 800 G2 23-in Touch AiO] Display is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-20 Thread Glenn Stewart
You are a star Daniel.

I followed the instructions at #80 under Bug 97822. That is:
Disabled Legacy Mode
Disabled Secure Boot
both options were on the same Advanced BIOS panel.

I then re-booted without success.

So I went with the final bit of the instructions and re-installed Ubuntu.
Success!
I updated the software and re-booted. Still at full screen.

Now all I have to do is get Ubuntu set up again!

edids.bin was still empty.

Regards,
Glenn Stewart

2021-01-19 Thread Glenn Stewart
Wayland versions done. Again, the edids.bin would not attach as it was
empty.

I have already made various changes to the display under Wayland. All
successful, although only in top half of the screen.

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-19 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.

BIOS Update was done under Windows/HP Tools before I installed Ubuntu.

xrandrv.txt is attached. edids.bin would not attach, as it was empty.

I tried various display settings, which all worked, but within the top half
of the screen.

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-18 Thread Glenn Stewart
Hi Daniel.

I have installed Ubuntu over Win10.
I have enabled Ubuntu on Wayland.
Everything works - LAN/WAN, Audio, Video, WiFi, Bluetooth, Printing, Mail,
software updates, etc.
It's just that it is still squashed up into the top half of the screen.

What else should I be doing please?

Regards,
Glenn Stewart

[Bug 1909377] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.04.1 installer crashed

2020-12-26 Thread Glenn Stewart
Public bug reported:

Could not create GRUB- this is a fatal error was the gist of the message
displayed.

I was installing Ubuntu from a flash drive.
Installer did not recognise that Win 10 was already installed.
Installed Ubuntu on a secondary disk that had unallocated space.
I want to be able to dual boot between Ubuntu and Win 10, as I migrate to
Ubuntu.

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-12-02 Thread Glenn Stewart
I did not want to actually install Ubuntu. I wanted to be able to run it
and see how it has progressed since I last used 12.04 from 2012 till 2016
on 3 x machines that were formerly Win XP.

In summary then, my hardware is suspected to be the issue, and if I want to
progress to see if the Wayland option helps, I have to install Ubuntu.

>From what I have seen so far, I will not proceed with installation.

However, I may have to-visit that decision if I am unable to resolve the
issue in Win 10 - if I have to rebuild Win 10, I may as well clear it all
out and install Ubuntu.

Thank you for your perseverance Daniel.

Glenn Stewart

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-12-02 Thread Glenn Stewart
Hi Daniel.
I do not have a login screen, so I do not have a password nor do I see any
of the options you have mentioned. See the attached screenshots.
Screenshot 1 shows the options I have. I usually go with 'try Ubuntu' or I
exit installation completely.
Screenshot 2 shows the desktop and the apps option, which is the only extra
thing I can do.

2020-12-01 Thread Glenn Stewart
Hi Daniel.

Here is the screenshot of the start up options. There is no 'Ubuntu on
Wayland' option available to me at start up.
I have tried each option, without success at this point.
Windows is still affected. Hard to show as the bottom half "haze" is very
light today.

[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-12-01 Thread Glenn Stewart
I have rebooted with the straight Ubuntu option rather than the Safe Graphics
option.

They all make the changes but still only within the top half of the screen.

2020-11-30 Thread Glenn Stewart
Under settings/resolution there is only one option - 1024 x 768 (4:3)

The machine is an HP AIO,Processor = Intel® Core™ i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz
× 8, Memory = 31.2 GiB, Graphics = llvmpipe (LLVM 10.0.0, 256 bits).

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-11-29 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.
I rebooted and used Ubuntu (safe graphics), and all was well.
The resolution only has one option - 1024 x 768.
So problem solved - thank you for your prompt response.

Regards,
Glenn Stewart

[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-11-29 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.
Screenshot attached.
I am back in Win10 right now, which also became affected by the "hazy bottom
half" of the display, although the full screen displayed behind the haze (just
hard to read).

Will need to try booting again from the stick, to see the option for
Wayland.

Cheers
Glenn

2020-10-30 Thread Bill Stewart
Public bug reported:

I upgraded a VMware virtual machine from Ubuntu 20.04.1 to 20.10, using the
release upgrade GUI from the Software Updater. The upgrade itself worked fine.
But during the upgrade, the upgrade tool claimed it was "Upgrading Ubuntu to
version 20.04" instead of to 20.10.
Attached screenshot shows it happening.

(This is a really minor bug.)

[Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails with Could not configure 'libc6:i386'. , E:Could not perform immediate configuration on 'libgcc-s1:i386'

2020-09-24 Thread Stewart menday
Just got this error, some further info,

GFX card - Nvidia Titan RTX
CPU - i9-10900X
MB - ASRock x299 Gaming K6
Installed OS - Win10 and Ubuntu 18.04, both installed to separate M.2 drives
Trying to install 20.04.01 to a 3rd M.2 drive

The install appears to be usable after the crash.
If you don't update drivers during install it will install without error.
If you don't update drivers during install, the installed system is unusable
due to no/crazy screen output.

This situation is absurd.

All my music and videos are on a NAS.
They are not mounted in /media for good reason.
Is there a setting? No? Epic fail.

When using a PDF export feature within an application, yes. But this
bug ticket is about the scenario that all the application is doing is
printing.

This is handled by CSS. In order to not have links highlighted, there
would need to be a CSS rule specified as @media print, either in the
webpage CSS or in the default stylesheet.

> Anyway] [Cancel]"

Given that nearly all web pages have hyperlinks, I think that would look
somewhat ridiculous, and annoy a user who is creating PDFs of several
webpages. Furthermore, I'm not sure if it's possible to detect if the
user has selected 'Save as PDF' under macOS, or is using a PDF printer
driver under any OS.

I disagree. To "strip hyperlinks of their functionality while retaining
their styling", as you put it, is equally what happens when printing to
paper. So some web page authors might set such CSS to counteract this
behaviour.

> Maybe the save-to-PDF feature should pull a piece of CSS from behind
the magic curtain, and apply it to de-style the links that it has no
intention of making work.

This is somewhat off-topic for this bug report, which is about what
happens when one uses the built-in feature of macOS to generate a PDF
from the print dialog. Bug 162659 would be a better place to discuss
this.

> I'm pretty sure this entire bug is not about using a "PDF driver under
any OS" but saving a PDF from Firefox to a file.

It's about what happens under the Save as PDF functionality built into
macOS as part of its printing provision. Firefox doesn't have the
latter functionality at the moment. It's requested in bug 162659.

[Bug 1850103] Re: gnome-tweak-tool window keeps flickering on cursor hovering

2020-03-15 Thread Stewart Midwinter
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1847524 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1847524

I tried the workaround, and that did help, but only once. After that,
the flickering returned even after uninstalling and reinstalling the
Tweaks app. Rebooting after uninstalling and before reinstalling also
did not help.

Workaround: I discovered that widening the app window by dragging on the
right side stopped the Flickering.

I just tried this in an Ubuntu 19.10 in a VM and I've not been able to
reproduce it. Looking at /usr/include/mysql/mysql.h, it seems at some
point the my_bool transitions has been given more time:

thomas@ubuntu:~$ grep my_bool /usr/include/mysql/mysql.h

[Bug 1835936] Re: gnome-control-center crash ubuntu 18.04.2

2019-07-25 Thread Stewart Seidel
Today after taking snapshots with Timeshift, I upgraded VirtualBox from
10.0.8 to 10.0.10 and also upgraded the Guest Additions to the same
version. I then upgraded Ubuntu 18.04 to the latest patches as of
today, INCLUDING the two mutter-2 patches that were causing the GUI
login not to appear after a reboot.

The system was rebooted after the installation of the patches above, and
the GUI login came up as it normally should.

As far as I'm concerned, this bug can be CLOSED. Thank you.

Sebastien,
Thanks for your reply.  Regarding step 1 below, here is what I did:

In each of the four cases above, I answered "Send To Developer".  There
was no indication of an "ID of the newly created bug", so I'm not quite
sure what you are referring to.   Since it's not clear if step 1 passed
or failed, regarding step 2, here's the whoopsie-id of my machine:

To summarize:
I attempted to follow the instructions provided, but it's not clear to me
whether it was successful.  Either the instructions weren't clear or I didn't
follow them properly.
I really would like to assist in solving this issue.  However, this is a

Indeed it does happen with all the other USB ports. I will buy a new
mouse. It is doubtful that it was a software issue as I thought.

Thanks for the help.

That final comment wasn't aimed at you personally. Sorry if it sounded
like it was. Really, I was commenting on the suggested workaround you
made reference to, rather than on your comment itself.

Which is basically what this bug ticket is asking for all along. I was
saying that it shouldn't be restricted to text/* types, because other
types may also be text-based formats. Another very good example of this
is PGN (which seems to be represented by various application/* types).

[Bug 25830]

2019-06-26 Thread Stewart
(In reply to Michael Lippert from comment #217)
> Addressing this issue would help a lot of power users. I think all that's
> needed is the capability to set somewhere (even about:config) that all
> unknown text/* types should be handled as internally as text/plain.

I disagree. It's only natural that sometimes the user will want to save
the file to disk, sometimes the user will want to open the file in an
external application, and sometimes the user will want to view the file
in the browser. Why should we force the user to choose on an all-or-
nothing basis, and moreover restrict it to text/* types?

> There are other text/* types that it would be really nice if they were
just viewable in the browser rendered as text/plain, such as those for
source files (text/x-c, text/x-java-source, ...).

Indeed, Moreover, there are many text-based file formats out there - not
just those that have text/* MIME types (e.g. application/xml, and
apparently application/javascript and application/json exist as well).

> On my system the mime type is also associated w/ the list of
applications I select from in the file manager to open those files, so I
want to be able to distinguish them from one another (I want to open
markdown files with different applications than js source files or
script files for example). I mention this because one workaround
suggested was just to tag markdown files as text/plain, but I'd rather
continue to use Chrome than lose the ability to distinguish the files in
the file manager.

What kind of "system" is this - an operating system, or a website with
an associated file manager?

The MIME type is for specifying what kind of file it is, not what the
user agent is to do with it. We shouldn't force anybody to misdeclare
MIME types in order to work around browser restrictions. We should fix
the restrictions.

[Bug 1832133] Re: Mouse unresponsive on Ubuntu 18.04

2019-06-22 Thread Tom Stewart
"HID 1241:" is my mouse. Occasionally I plug it out and put it back
in again. Please don't be concerned if the logs show this.

Since this mouse works perfectly when I boot up Windows on my computer,
I was sure it was an Ubuntu software issue. But I tested a different
mouse on Ubuntu, and I had no problems. Nevertheless, before buying a
replacement mouse, I would like to see if I can make my current one
work.

Just now, I was using my mouse on Ubuntu and it stopped responding
entirely. I ran dmesg > dmesg.txt and have added the resulting text file
as an attachment to this comment.

[Bug 1832133] [NEW] Mouse unresponsive on Ubuntu 18.04

2019-06-09 Thread Tom Stewart
Public bug reported:

Hi there,

I submitted this bug report following advice in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingMouseDetection

I dual-boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 (on a HP Pavillion Touchsmart 15
Notebook PC 15-n090sa, bought in 2014). I use Ubuntu every day, and
rarely boot up Windows.

I use an optical mouse attached to my computer by USB cable. It works
perfectly on Windows. But on Ubuntu, it will work OK for a couple of
seconds, but then become less and less responsive, to the point where it
barely works at all.

I have a touchpad that works perfectly in both Windows and Ubuntu.

Result of lsb_release -rd: Description: Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS. Release:18.04
I am using Xdiagnose version 3.8.8

Please help!

Tom.

So, it looks like there could be a problem in the error path, plausibly
fixed by this patch:

commit 656ecc16e8fc2ab44b3d70e3fcc197a7020d0ca5
Author: Haren Myneni
Date: Wed Jun 13 00:32:40 2018 -0700

crypto/nx: Initialize 842 high and normal RxFIFO control registers

NX increments readOffset by FIFO size in receive FIFO control register
when CRB is read. But the index in RxFIFO has to match with the
corresponding entry in FIFO maintained by VAS in kernel. Otherwise NX
may be processing incorrect CRBs and can cause CRB timeout.

VAS FIFO offset is 0 when the receive window is opened during
initialization. When the module is reloaded or in kexec boot, readOffset
in FIFO control register may not match with VAS entry. This patch adds
nx_coproc_init OPAL call to reset readOffset and queued entries in FIFO
control register for both high and normal FIFOs.

v4.19-rc1~24^2~50

Which was never backported to any stable release, so probably needs to
be for v4.14 through v4.18. Notably, Ubuntu is on v4.15 and it doesn't
seem to have picked up the patch.

Reported to upstream (and there may be further discussion) over at

[Bug 1826025] Re: gnome-shell trap int3 no desktop ("Impossible to lock surface front buffer: Function not implemented" on Matrox graphics card)

2019-04-30 Thread Gregory Stewart
I didn't know how to log into "Ubuntu" instead of "Ubuntu on Wayland"
since I only got a blinking cursor and no logon prompt. I edited
/etc/gdm3/custom.conf and rebooted.

Successfully got a GUI logon prompt and was able to log in to the
desktop.

So, if a web page contains a URL as part of the visible text of the
page, it will be hyperlinked. Correct? This suggests to me that macOS
does this out of the box when printing to PDF, and it would equally
happen when printing to PDF from another program, such as a word
processor or plain text editor.

Note all flannel units are in error.

Looking at the flannel logs, we get this:

[Bug 1772038] Re: ubuntu/xubuntu 18.04 kernel crash during install.

2018-09-07 Thread Nigel Stewart
Confirming this issue for USB installer for both 18.04.1 and 16.04.5 on HP
Compaq dc5800.
The "acpi=off noapic" kernel parameter workaroud works for installing the
system.
And interestingly, once installed to SATA drive the system boots and behaves
normally.

I'd be happy to try a new ISO or update the BIOS, for the purposes here.

2018-07-26 Thread Stewart Kluss
I have the same problem trying to back up my system using Deja Dup. When
I try to run the app, I first get a message that I need to install
package  gvfs-backends

When I try to install the package, I get 'Error while installing
package: installed python3 package post-installation script subprocess
returned error exit status 4.

Then, Deja Dup turns itself off. I cannot back up my system with it.

[Bug 1766969] Re: DNS cannot be resolved in Public / Hotel / Starbucks WiFi Hotspot

2018-05-17 Thread mike stewart
This seems to affect many public Wifi Hotspots. A very common example is
the new setup by Starbucks/Google (usually seen as **Google Starbucks
Wifi**) in the US by (Tech behind it is https://globalreachtech.com/
with their http://odyssys.net/).

Under Ubuntu 16.04, Windows, Android, Mac OS, or iPhone, a WiFi guest
user can connect without problem. However, since upgrading to Ubuntu
18.04, I've encountered this in at least three separate Starbucks stores
in Southern California.

## WORKAROUND ##

An easier workaround, with fewer system modifications than the original
bug report is to use `ip route` to determine the IP address of the host
router, then add the hostname with that adress to `/etc/hosts`

Step by step details can be found here: https://askubuntu.com/a/1027605/139249

[Bug 1767900] Re: Ubuntu can't log into starbucks WIFI

2018-05-11 Thread mike stewart
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1766969 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1766969

@seb128 I'm in a Starbucks now. #1727237 does not fix my issue.

This seems to be a duplicate of open bug: #1766969 (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1766969 ), which
forked from #1727237

**WORKAROUND:**

1. At Starbucks, connect to Google Starbucks WiFi.
2. Jump into a browser to have it identify a "server not found", need the name
of the server in the browser address. (Example: Browser hangs on
`https://aruba.odyssys.net`)
3. Open terminal and run `ip route` to determine ROUTER.IP (example: `ip route`
returns `default via 172.31.98.1`)
4. Lookup the server IP address from local router by running `dig @ROUTER.IP
server.not.found` (example: `dig @172.31.98.1 aruba.odyssys.net` returns `;;
ANSWER SECTION:
aruba.odyssys.net. 0 IN A 172.31.98.1`)
5. Add IP address to /etc/hosts (Example: `sudo nano /etc/hosts` add the line:
`172.31.98.1aruba.odyssys.net`)
6. Add nameservers to /etc/resolv.conf (Example: `sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf`
add lines above existing nameserver `nameserver 172.31.98.1` and `nameserver
8.8.8.8`)

Try again to connect (and don't reboot before connecting).

**Notes:**
After reviewing the output as I was sharing I realized
Step 4 might be totally unnecessary.
Step 5 is a permanent change that likely will affect your ability to connect at
other Starbucks.
Step 6 is temporary and systemd will overwrite the file at reboot, possibly
sooner.

[Bug 1762772] Re: Keyboard shortcuts applet misses some keybindings

2018-04-12 Thread mike stewart
Symptoms are the same as #1508146 (but I'm not sure it's the same
cause).

alt+left/right sends me to another tty (terminal shell). Although I'm still
trying to determine if its window manager / keymapper kind of issue or what. I
use ubuntu because I don't typically like to get to this level.

This seems to be a regression error, I installed updates yesterday (same
day I noticed: Apr-11 and also updates on either Apr9/10).

Also of note, (out of ordinary), I had to kill an out of control
evolution-addressbook-factory-subprocess process using System Monitor.
System lost a lot of window manager features and led me to switch tty to
reboot.

I Just did an update of Ubuntu 17.10 and Libreoffice6 and still have the same
problem with access denied on the windows partition of my hard disk. In Ubuntu
Home directory all is fine. Problem with access only occurred after carrying
out updates of Ubuntu 17.10 & LibreOffice (5.3 to 6) on the 24/2/18. Tried all
the above solutions to no avail. Status of apparmor is -
sudo aa-status

apparmor module is loaded.

Is a test directory being used for apparmor? As according to the
/etc/apparmor.d/disable directory it should be disabled for office.

[Bug 1704765] Re: can't drag file from desktop to folder window on Artful

2018-01-22 Thread Tom Stewart
It is so disappointing that this is not fixed 6 months after it was
reported. I just freshly installed 17.10. This bug renders Chrome, text
editor, and more unusable.

[Bug 1589008] Re: Bluetooth freezing video playback In Ubuntu/Kubuntu 16.04

2017-05-31 Thread Stephen Stewart
I've given up using Linux/Ubuntu because of this one bug. I need to use
a Bluetooth headset. I cannot be wired to my desk all day. It's a shame
this is not taken seriously as it has caused me to go back to windows.
This should be treated as a major issue as it has caused me and possibly
others to dump Linux. Forget new features, just make the system work
properly.

[Bug 1679898] Re: [Hyper-V] Ubuntu VM crash during Hyper-V backup or live migration after installing kernel 4.4.0-72

2017-04-18 Thread Stewart Campbell
I can confirm I have this issue as well on 14.04 and 16.04 with the
latest kernel.

Removing the DVD drive does fix the issue, however if they are online it
also causes the VMs to run out of memory, same as if they are being
backed up.

I used the following PowerShell script to remove all drives on the
Hyper-V host:

foreach ($VM in Get-VM) {
Get-VMDvdDrive -VMName $VM.Name | Remove-VMDvdDrive
}

I also noticed that instead of removing the DVD drive you can disable
the Backup (volume checkpoint) integration service and it will allow
backups to complete.

[Bug 1497545] Re: archive manager changes file manager default settings to show hidden files

2017-03-03 Thread Neil Stewart
Second Dominik's post as not fixed. The hidden files are showing in
Nautilus on 16.04 by default and when changed back do not stay like
that.

My thanks to him, his suggested fix via Firefox Save dialog worked for
me - I have tried many of the older suggestions - including resetting
nautilus preferences and the archive fix above, but his was the only one
that fixed this issue.

[Bug 1605478] Re: supertux2 segfaults on native Mir with SDL_VIDEODRIVER=mir trying to call glXQueryVersion

2017-02-06 Thread Nigel Stewart
Sounds likely to be this issue:
https://github.com/nigels-com/glew/issues/103

I can go ahead and release a GLEW 2.0.1 (bugfix release) if it's likely
to be promptly downstreamed.

[Bug 1628260] Re: Upgrade libglew package to also include libglew2

2017-02-06 Thread Nigel Stewart
As the GLEW maintainer my suggestion would be to only continue with MX
packages for GLEW 1.13. There is no good reason to continue using GLEW
1.x aside from the MX multi-thread, multi-context support.

No one seems to care about this. I stopped using kubuntu and have went
back to Windows 10. Far too many issues with that release, this was just
one of them.
