[Bug 1968500] [NEW] cursor flickers, area around cursor not updated

2022-04-10 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

This is on a legally blind user's machine so a larger cursor is needed.

Had problems on problems on ubuntu 20.04 n optiplex 780 with G98 [GeForce 8400
GS Rev. 2] with largest size and Yaru cursor. Cursor was flickering and a
square region around the cursor often failed to update.
nvidia-settings -> x screen 0 -> open gl setting enable flip off and
quality=high quality helped. Changing cursor in gnome-tweaks appearance themes
cursor from Yaru to the smaller redglass helped more. Changing it to DMZ-black
steem to help more. But the region around the mouse cursor is still not
updated. So, for example, what you type does not appear if it is behind cursor
rectangle.

Current state:
   - cursor not flickering
   - area around cursor often not updated.
   - system nearly unusable

Display driver had already been changed from open source to nvidia
proprietary to deal with other display update problems.

[Bug 1916005] Re: gnome-shell hangs window decorations and dialogs

2021-02-18 Thread whitis
disabling makes freeze duration much shorter but you lose your desktop
session every time. DATA LOSS inevitable.

sudo perl -p -i -n -e "s/enabled=1/enabled=0/" /etc/default/apport
sudo systemctl disable apport
sudo service apport stop

If I remove apport and whoopsie, then the duration of the freeze is reduced to
5 seconds under light load and desktop is not lost. This uninstalls ubuntu-bug
as well.
sudo apt-get purche apport whoopsie

The system still freezes and under load it could be much worse. Gnome-
shell is apparently still crashing but it isn't compounded by apport
delays.

If I reinstall apport but not whoopsie, I still have the long delay.

cat /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern
|/usr/share/apport/apport %p %s %c %d %P %E

If I change it to coredump, gnome-shell still crashes the whole desktop
sudo bash -c 'echo "core" >/proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern'

If I change it back and then purge apport, it changes the pattern to:
!/usr/share/apport/apport %p %s %c %d %P %E

And gnome-shell crashes somewhat gracefully, allowing you to keep your
desktop. What happens under system load remains to be seen.

[Bug 1916005] Re: gnome-shell hangs window decorations and dialogs

2021-02-18 Thread whitis
Mouse cursor works when frozen.

Actually, it looks like psensor does hang until the system starts to come back.
It does show a spike (of unknown amplitude) in CPU usage (tenfold) and CPU
temperature and there is an audible increase in fan speed. Top/gnome-terminal
also freezes.
top -d 1 -p `pgrep gnome-shell|paste -sd,`
If I run a command in a terminal that writes the date once per second and tee's
it to a file, the terminal output will freeze immediately when desktop freezes
but the timestamps in the file show it still continues to write to the file on
time. CPU pressure was not high but CPU usage was fairly high but not on all
cores simultaneously.
Duration of freeze on lightly loaded system was around 25 seconds.

Quickly switching to another console and running top shows apport and
whoopsie-upload at top of CPU usage. Turning off Settings -> Privacy ->
Problem Reporting -> Send Error reports to canonical changes nothing.
apport/whoopsie-upload still run and eat 100% of cpu.

[Bug 1916005] [NEW] gnome-shell hangs window decorations and dialogs

2021-02-17 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Desktop hangs frequently, sometimes more than once per day and can result in
loss of work.
Today I found a way to easily reproduce.
- sudo apt-get install key-mon
- start new session with nothing but gnome-terminal running. Unnecssary to
reproduce, you can have dozens of programs running.
- key-mon &
- right click on key-mon window and open settings
- enable meta key (may not be necessary)
- switch to misc tab
- Check window decoration with nothing else checked
- attempt to uncheck window decoration. Fails. Trying multiple times won't
help and may make things worse.
- Desktop is now frozen and will remain this way for an indeterminate time but
may eventually come back within a minute. If you actually had stuff running
on your machine, chances of coming back aren't great. Symptoms include:
 - psensor graph continues to update
 - cannot make terminal respond.
  - cannot drag windows
  - cannot focus windows

When it came back, one of 3 gnome shell processes previously detected
using psgrep was missing and has been replaced. This is consistent with
the screen being redrawn when it comes back.

When desktop didn't come back recently, I was able to CTRL-ALT-F3 to a console
and kill okular, freecad, gimp, key-mon, firefox, freecad-daily,openscad,
file-roller, psensor, and gnome-terminal, in that order, until there was
nothing left and still did not regain control of system. Ctrl-Alt-Del ESC
also failed (though I think I did end up causing system to reboot). System
pressure after killing okular and freecad was:
===memory
some avg10=0.00 avg60=0.00 avg300=0.00 total=0
full avg10=0.00 avg60=0.00 avg300=0.00 total=0
===cpu
some avg10=0.01 avg60=0.02 avg300=0.00 total=9348303
===io
some avg10=18.81 avg60=30.25 avg300=34.80 total=852281032
full avg10=17.43 avg60=28.42 avg300=32.91 total=795530186

I was able to reproduce this many times by turning window decorations on
and off in key-mon.

In the past, desktop freezes were frequently caused by dialog boxes
popping up including the wait of force quit dialog. I installed the
extension to disable wait-or-force quit. System still becomes severely
non-responsive when programs like firefox eat up a lot of RAM and I have
to use onetab firefox extension regularly.

[Bug 1898675] [NEW] Prints large page incorrectly

File prints incorrectly with default settings (HL3140CW) and doesn't
have options to correct the problem such as scale to fit and doesn't
offer a preview and won't even tell you the page size. Evince prints
correctly with default settings and also has options like scale to fit,
preview, and will show page size.

Only a very small strip of the page is printed. A black bar containing a
portion of the words "Values in 100X lines per picture height" is all
that is printed.

[Bug 1892788] [NEW] launches yagv when opening FOLDER

2020-08-24 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Critical bug. file-roller will make the system user interface sieze up
and cause you to lose work.

- Ubuntu 18.04
- install firefox and yagv
- In firefox, download and select open with archive manager
https://www.chepclub.com/uploads/9/2/9/8/9298268/chepbedlevel_3.0.zip
- In file roller, click on the folder ChepBedLevel2.0
- It will not browse the folder
- Double click on the folder.
- Instead of browsing the folder, It will launch yagv on the g-code files. It
might also launch the text editor (gedit?) on the STL file.
- the system doesn't hang every time but it does occur multiple times.
- ssh in remotely and killall file-roller to get control of your machine back.

file-roller is very unresponsive, even with the machine working ok.

Same thing happens with a 3D model with no g-code downloaded from thingiverse
containing no g-code.
www.thingiverse.com/thing:2867275
In this case, it tries to open the huge STL file with a text editor. In this
case, I noticed that trying to type in a terminal window caused the text editor
search box to appear.

The hangs might be occuring in gedit and/or yagv (never seen that
before) but gedit was launched without consent.

This seems to be exciting an existing bug in the system. It not uncommon
for certain programs dialog boxes to sieze control of the the mouse
pointer and make the machine unusable. I had more trouble than usual
recovering, however. Ctrl-Alt-Del and cancel did not work and
switching consoles didn't work. I have disabled a few dialog boxes that
cause this problem, like the an application is unresponsive, do you want
me to make the entire system unresponsive? dialog box.

[Bug 1885411] Re: sgt-pattern draws in wrong window

2020-06-28 Thread whitis
Note problems affect other puzzles as well and sgt-launcher seems to be
at fault. Apparently, its attempts to reparent the programs don't work
on xwayland. sgt-launcher was already killed, though, when the zombie
window wouldn't go away.

[Bug 1885411] Re: sgt-pattern draws in wrong window

2020-06-28 Thread whitis
The black window can't be killed after you close program.

Not with the X
Not will killall sgt-pattern
Not with killall -9 sgt-pattern
Not with xkill and pointing to window
Not with dash "quit"

it can be minimized or maximized or resized

I was able to kill it by xkill -id 0x897257 but that also killed gnome-
shell. Had to Ctrl-alt-del, cancel, switch to terminal window with tab
key, "nohup gnome-shell --restart &"

Note that the small picture over the big picture also happens when you restart
sgt-pattern after having resized the window and then select a "10x10" game from
type menu, although that window will close.

[Bug 1885411] [NEW] sgt-pattern draws in wrong window

2020-06-28 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

One of the two windows is blank and then it draws what it probably
intended to draw in that window over the main window.

- sgt-launcher
- Pick pattern
- select a 10x10
- resize window larger (testing for legally blind user)
- play game
- upon completion, it draws the completed puzzle on top of the working puzzle
instead of in the other window.

[Bug 1882157] [NEW] Can't report bug on package you have replaced

2020-06-04 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu-bug will not let you report a bug if you have upgraded a package
using external sources.

Package zoom was so old the server rejected it. Downloaded the new
.deb file from upstream source. Now I can't report a bug on zoom that
the package is so far out of date.

Similarly, if a package is so broken you can't install it, it won't let
you report a bug.

Just note that you can't collect the data and do your job.

[Bug 1880649] [NEW] wslusc creates bogus .lnk file that tries to run spotify

2020-05-26 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Created link includes a lot of nonsense such as microsoft edge, spotify,
gamebar. None of that nonsense is in my windoze or wsl/ubuntu
enviroment variables, either. And I checked for malware recently and
there is nothing but "netcat" which was deliberately installed.
Spotify is installed because it came with the machine.

[Bug 1877695] [NEW] Hangs system: System Program Problem Detected

2020-05-08 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

The System Program Problem Detected popup apparently causes system to hang.
You can't switch to a terminal.
You can't move a window.
You can't interact within windows.
Ctrl-alt-del took more than a minute to respond and then you have 30 seconds to
answer cancel during which the system is also non-responsive.

This is not the only popup that causes this. The Program Not
Responding Wait or Force Quit dialog has the same effect. It was
disabled entirely. Ctrl-alt-del cancel method sometimes worked for
that one.

Appears to be related to grabbing mouse pointer.
xwininfo said it could not grab mouse pointer (probably because apport already
grabbed it).

Actual dialog box was burried.
Window had no title bar, it was hidden under top bar (top bar set to autohide).
Showed "update-notifier" as program name. Was able to quit from the pulldown
menu on top bar. After which, system became usable again.

Data was almost lost in seamonkey composer because of the difficulty
saving. I was using firefox at the time of the problem. Although
firefox's memory utilization had been quite high, I had killed tabs and
its memory usage was under 2GB.

[Bug 1875417] [NEW] APRS teleportation

2020-04-27 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

APRS stations are apparently teleporting between coasts and between
northern and southern hemispheres as well as more locally. At a time
when airlines are grounded and most people are staying at home.

APRS plugin enabled
using rotate.aprs.net
debug was turned on in aprs plugin but debug info wasn't sent to stdout.
View -> Online Services -> APRS enabled
Files -> Position Tracking -> current possition [X]
Files -> Position Tracking -> current track [X]
had selected my area then zoomed out to the entire state of Virginia.

left marble running overnight.

there were a very few legitimate tracks that resembled someone actually
driving but there were lots of long straight lines inconsistent with
normal travel.

I could only get one screenshot because when I went to pan/zoom back to my
region, marble crashed:

[Bug 1875041] [NEW] powertop breaks lock screen, mouse, keyboard

2020-04-25 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

After installing and running powertop (and powerstat), system was broken
multiple times:
   - mouse became unusable because it was put to sleep without my consent.
LED turns off. Had to press button to wake up mouse but it would go to sleep
very shortly thereafter. Was able to issue a command to turn mouse power one.
   - can't recover from lock screen. It acts as if someone is continually
typing a carriage return. It keeps redisplaying a message to the effect of
"Authentication Failed". No keys you type on keyboard show up as dots in the
password field. Can't use on-screen keyboard. Unplugged all USB devices.
Still persists. I was able to SSH in from another computer the second time
and after killing gsd-keyboard a couple times was able to regain control but
only because it crashed gnome-shell and logged me out. First time I think I
rebooted. System behaved ok for 5 days and then recurred. System had been
stable for months before installing powertop.

I suspect that the keyboard stack randomly gets screwed up coming out of
unauthorized auto suspend.

I believe I had run powertop and powertop --calibrate before the
problems started.

mouse and keyboard had been unplugged to reset multiple times.

system is a desktop. Was actually looking for something that could tell
me how much power was being consumed.

powertop was observed to be running, without my consent, when I logged
on by SSH. The documentation I had seen said you needed to manually
add powertop to startup scripts which I certainly did not do.

Involuntary logout can lead to data loss. I was very lucky this time that I
had apparently saved shortly before loss of control.

uninstalled powertop.

[Bug 1869793] [NEW] search fails

2020-03-30 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

 - apt-get install typecatcher
 - also tried ppa, not newer
 - looking for alllerta stencil font, scrolled down through list, did not find
it
 - typed stencil in search box. Fails even though there are 4.
 - later happened to find one of the other font names in list and then was able
to locate all 4 by name
 - search still fails. Search only finds the word at the begininng of the
name, not the second word of the name.

Other observations:
  - lacks the ability to install fonts from the command line
  - Lacks the ability to specify destination directory (i.e. one of the system
or local font directories)

[Bug 1865976] [NEW] horrible noises

2020-03-03 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

My system has, on more than one occasion, spontaneously begun making
horrible noises. Don't have to be doing anything that generates audio.
Orca wasn't even turned on and was not set to use cicero. The previous
time this happened, I was able to trace it to speech dispatcher/cicero.
pavucontrol was helpful. On the most recent occasion, I killed
sd_cicero and the noise stopped.

The noise sounded like a stale ring buffer was suddenly being played
continuously. The contents of which were extremely unpleasant.

[Bug 1637567] Re: Festival 2.4 Regression

2020-01-22 Thread whitis
This is marked as fixed and yet, on ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS, installing the
festvox-us-slt-hts does not install any of the NITECH voices (only a
single CMU voice) and if you try to install them using the directions in
the nitech section at https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=751169,
festival fails with the same error when you try to use the nitech
voices.

[Bug 1828220] Re: apt-get --install-suggests applied recursively

2019-09-30 Thread whitis
I would also point out not only is the recursive interpretation of
--install-suggests incorrect, it is internally inconsistent.

apt-get --dry-run remove --purge -o APT::AutoRemove::Suggests-
Important=0 --auto-remove geda geda-utils geda-examples kicad kicad-doc-
en librecad oregano qelectrotech xcircuit gerbv pcb pcb-gtk pcb-common
pcb-rnd pcb2gcode visolate caneda fritzing

Does not appear to recurse. Neither does substituting "autoremove" for
"purge" or trying to remove suggests on "clang" the same way.

--install-suggests and install-recommends should default to a recursion
level of 1 and allow you to specify a greater level of recursion in the
unlikely event you desire.

[Bug 1828220] Re: apt-get --install-suggests applied recursively

2019-09-30 Thread whitis
The claim that it does what it says it does is false.

What it, in fact does, is consider suggested packages of OTHER packages
as a dependency for installing. This recursive behavior is not
advertised and not acceptable. For that behavior, one should have to
use an option such as --install-suggests-recursive and not --install-
suggests.

There is an enormous difference between installing the packages suggested by
the package geda and installing the packages suggested many levels deep. Even
without a defective suggests list, this would not be expected or desired
behavior.

[Bug 1828220] [NEW] apt-get --install-suggests applied recursively

2019-05-08 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

In a blatent violation of the principal of least surprise, --install-
suggests installs packages that are in the suggested packages for
packages that are not listed on the command line. It installs suggested
packages for other packages deep in the dependency hierarchy.

Do not type this command except on an expendable (virtual) machine:
sudo apt-get --install-suggests install -y geda geda-utils geda-examples kicad
kicad-doc-en librecad oregano qelectrotech xcircuit gerbv pcb pcb-gtk
pcb-common pcb-rnd pcb2gcode visolate caneda fritzing

In this case, something installed clang which depends on clang-6.0. clang-6.0
very foolishly suggested gnustep which, since apt inappropriately applied
--installed-suggests many layers down the dependency tree, then installed the
entire gnustep suite of applications. Gnustep, after several more layers of
inappropriate suggestsions, caused roaraudio to be installed which caused
errors on every apt-get install command.

aptitude why roaraudio
i   clang  Depends  clang-6.0 (>= 6.0~)
i A clang-6.0 Suggests gnustep
i A gnustepSuggests mpdcon.app
i A mpdcon.app Suggests mpd
i A mpdDepends libroar2
i A libroar2 Suggests libmuroar0
i A libmuroar0 Suggests roaraudio | muroard

clang later gets installed explicitly, so I cant trace the specific path
back to the CAD packages that were installed but clang-6.0 and roaraudio
are first installed after the listed apt-get command above. Which
ultimately installs 2675 packages. Tracing forward with debtree
--with-suggests also doesn't make it clear why clang was installed but
debtree doesn't include dependencies of recommended packages.

The actual recommends of these packages listed on the apt-get command were
rather modest:
Recommends: geda-gsymcheck, geda-gattrib
Recommends: geda
Recommends: xsltproc
Recommends: gnucap
Recommends: qelectrotech-examples (= 1:0.5-2), qelectrotech-data (= 1:0.5-2),
qttranslations5-l10n
Recommends: extra-xdg-menus
Recommends: extra-xdg-menus

The following command suggests that a single package, geda, is sufficient to
reproduce the bug.
apt-rdepends --follow=Depends,PreDepends,Suggests,Recommends geda | fgrep -i
clang
It also shows that adding Suggests blows up the dependency tree from 664 lines
of dependency info to 49965 lines corresponding to 5865 unique packages vs 173.

clang traces back to i18nspector (through python), though it isn't clear
why that was needed. It may trace baqck to check-all-the-things and
from ther to devscripts but for some reason that isn't included in the
apt-rdepends output. debmake, gem2deb, git-buildpackage, javahelper,
duck, devscripts-el, svn-buildpackage, and mozzila-devscipts all depend
on devscripts. Like many dependencies that should not have been
followed, check-all-the-things was only a suggests.

i18nspector -> python3-rply -> python3-appdirs -> clang/clang-6.0

This debacle left me with about 6368 packages installed and about 20GB
of extra disk space wasted compared to running a fairly similar set of
many apt-get commands, without selectively including --install-
recommends on a few, on another machine. And ultimately, it appears
will be necessary to completely reinstall this computer from scratch to
undo the damage. In total, there were only about 50 packages included
in "Suggests" without recursion.

Not only does --install-suggests behave incorrectly but the man page
fails to document this destructive behavior.

[Bug 1828148] [NEW] dependency gnustep

2019-05-07 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Installing clang caused gnustep to be installed. This is completely
and totally unacceptable. An entire useless suite of applications,
hundereds of packages, was installed just because something depended on
a compiler.

Technically it was a suggests rather than a depend but apt installed it anyway
because a package that depends on clang was installed with --install-suggests.
sudo apt-get --install-suggests install -y geda geda-utils geda-examples kicad
kicad-doc-en librecad oregano qelectrotech xcircuit gerbv pcb pcb-gtk
pcb-common pcb-rnd pcb2gcode visolate caneda fritzing

--install-suggests was used because those do suggest some bunch of
packages that are actually useful/needed to fully utilize above and
their suggestions were modest and reasonable and unlikely to create
dependency problems.

installing gnustep caused a bunch of other crap to be installed
including roaraudio that caused errors everytime a package was
installed.

aptitude why roaraudio
i   clang  Depends  clang-6.0 (>= 6.0~)
i A clang-6.0 Suggests gnustep
i A gnustepSuggests mpdcon.app
i A mpdcon.app Suggests mpd
i A mpdDepends libroar2
i A libroar2 Suggests libmuroar0
i A libmuroar0 Suggests roaraudio | muroard
[roaraudio itself has already been removed]

removing gnustep allowed 104 additional packages to be autoremoved (282MB), and

[Bug 1769299] Re: universal access zoom unusable

2018-05-05 Thread whitis
Problem reproduced on separate (virtual) machine, unmodified ubuntu live image.
   - Host system AMD Phenom II X6 1090T with 16GB RAM Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS
   - virtualbox 14.3.36-dfsg-...
   - SATA 0: 8GB VMDK drive (new)
   - SATA 1: CD/ROM: ubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso
   - Base memory: 4GB (important, if you use 1GB, ubuntu will boot to
desktop but nothing works)
must have enough ram on host machine to permit this
   - Specific Virtual machine -> System -> Motherboard: Enable EFI: On
 otherwise it will not boot
- Boot menu: TRY ubuntu without installing
- Show Applications (dash)-> Terminal
- Show Applications -> Settings-> Universal Access -> Always Show Universal
Access Menu: On
- don't dismiss settings, we will use it about 8 steps below.
- Universal Access menu (round man in circle on top panel) -> Zoom: on
- Move pointer to upper left corner of desktop: note left panel (launcher)
icons
cut in hafl, note top panel cut in half
- move to top right
- click on whats left of universal access menu icon to pull down menu, note
it is drawn incorrectly
- move mouse down and to the left and notice how these panels/pull down
menus scroll independently and incorrectly.
- try to turn off the zoom in the univeral access pull down menu. Try to
read the word zoom, now you cant see the control, move to see the control now
you can't see the word. But in this case, you can actually get there.
 - turn zoom back on
 - move mouse pointer to upper right hand corner. Make sure either the
universal access or the system menu is pulled down
 - move mouse down and left to the words "sound keys" in the settings menu
(control panel,
not the pull down menu) for universal access. Leave the mouse pointer
there for a
few seconds. Display will pan to upper right hand corner without
permission.
  - If you repeat this without either of the two pull down menus activated,
it will jump
to the highlighted "Universal Access" on the left side of the settings
window.
This jumping action severely interfered with issuing screenshot commands
in terminal and
it will interfere with many other operations as well.

Behavior of program suggests that the screen is being composited of the
following elements:
   - desktop background
   - application window 1
   - application window 2
   - application window 3 ...
   - top panel
   - left panel (launcher)
   - pull down menu
The first four items appear to be correctly composited together before applying
the zoom and pan operation but the last three appear to not be composited onto
the desktop+applications before zoom and pan is applied. The size of their
windows has not been enlarged, only the contents.

Add to paragraph about obfuscating the identity of the programs the user
is interacting with: Universal Pull down menu also doesn't have "Help"
or report bug menu items.

[Bug 1656840] [NEW] window maximize is non-reversable

2017-01-16 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

You can't reverse window maximize on gnome terminal. When you maximize
the window then minimize, either by using the maximize/minimize window
or by double clicking the title bar (intentionally or otherwise) then
when you try to minimize the window it uses almost the full screen
(excluding space occupied by panels). It forgets the initial size or
the size eplicitly set by the user. View -> Normal size also has no
effect.

Workaround: terminal -> 80x24 does work after you have minimized the
window (but not before).

Public bug reported:

I was using a thumbdrive freshly created with unetbootin with Ubuntu
16.04 LTS and a 2GB persistent partition on a VAIO VPCEB42FM laptop to
copy failed hard drive to replacement hard drive. During this critical
recovery operation, system was unresponsive and I discovered that dpkg
was running a command to install upgrades for more packages than would
fit on one screen without line breaks. It was invoked by unattended-
upgrade. I would not have given unattended-upgrade permission to
install upgrades on a hard-drive, let alone on a usb thumb drive.

killed using killall before reporting bug. Relavent portions of ps output
pasted below from terminal buffer:

[Bug 1456452] Re: Works with stylus but not finger: HP Elitebook 2740P Tablet PC

2015-05-19 Thread whitis
Fix was to install this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~onboard/+archive/ubuntu/stable
As suggested from this bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/onboard/+bug/1304573

However, that bug report suggests multitouch should work. Specifically, that
you should be able to hold the shift key while typing. This does not work.
The second touch may or may not cause the shift to be released, but in either
case characters will not be typed.
This isn't a big issue for me.

[Bug 1456452] [NEW] Works with stylus but not finger: HP Elitebook 2740P Tablet PC

2015-05-18 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

As I will explain below, it appears that this bug is probably a
manifestation of onboard using a completely incorrect algorithm for
detecting button presses and releases that only accidentally works on
legacy input devices and fails completely on a touchscreen.

HP EliteBook 2740p is a convertible Tablet PC with a screen that can rotate
from Laptop mode into tablet mode. In tablet mode, the screen covers the
keyboard and an on screen keyboard is a necessity. This machine has 4+ input
devices:
   - multitouch touch screen
   - stylus on screen
   - pointing stick
   - trackpad
   - also, 3D accelerometer which could theoretically be used to move cursor.
These are without plugging in an external 3D space navigator, mouse, joystick,
gamepad, eyemouse, etc.

I can type with:
   - Touch screen stylus on screen
   - Touchpad (cumbersome and not at all useful in tablet mode)
   - pointing stick (AKA erasor/clitoris/trackpoint(tm)/etc) (cumbersome and
not at all useful in tablet mode)
   - (physical keyboard)
I can not type using
  - Finger on multitouch screen

This is not a calibration issue. This is not a rotation issue; even
though I have been playing with rotation, the screen and input devices
are currently unrotated and I can type in xvkbd or florence on screen
keyboards with stylus or finger.

onboard complet

 xsetwacom --list
Serial Wacom Tablet WACf00e stylus id: 13 type: STYLUS
Serial Wacom Tablet WACf00e eraser id: 15 type: ERASER
Serial Wacom Tablet WACf00e touch id: 16 type: TOUCH# finger
# Not shown: synaptics touchpad

The following error message appears frequently in the terminal tab from which
onboard was started (enough to render the tab unusable):
(onboard:5529): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_device_get_axis_use: assertion 'index_
device-axes-len' failed
This error appears whether using stylus or finger (but not touchpad or stick)
and occurs more than once per key press as you hover.

Note the following potentially relevant general behavior differences
between these 4 pointing devices. With the three that work, the cursor
tracks movement when not clicking/dragging.The one that doesn't
warps the mouse directly to the point touched and generates events at
that point and hides the mouse cursor since the mouse cursor can't track
a raised finger.

Default onboard preferences were used.

xev shows Button Press, Motion Notify, and Button release events when touching
with finger. Similar with stylus.
Differences, stylus sends motion notify updates when near screen, finger
doesn't.
Finger sends motion notify updates while being held still touching screen,
stylus does not.

Here are events captured with both buton and stylus:
stylus:
ButtonRelease event, serial 37, synthetic NO, window 0x561,
root 0x80, subw 0x0, time 9012106, (110,108), root:(175,676),
state 0x100, button 1, same_screen YES

Finger:
ButtonRelease event, serial 37, synthetic NO, window 0x561,
root 0x80, subw 0x0, time 9065337, (96,85), root:(161,653),
state 0x100, button 1, same_screen YES

Another difference is the state in the motion notify events:
   Stylus: 0x0, 0x0, ... 0x100, 0x100, 0x100, ... 0x0, 0x0,
   Finger: 0x100 events only.
erasor or touchpad: generate 0x0 events.

This suggests that the bug in the software is to look at the state
variable in motion notify events to determine presses and releases
instead of using the correct algorithm of looking at buttonpress and
buttonrelease events.State can tell you the difference between a
drag and a mere traverse but it is not a valid source of press/release
event detection.

The stylus can report its position when hovering over, but near, the
glass. The finger is only reported when it is actually pressing.
Thus, there are no motion notify events when the finger is withdrawn.

Multitouch trivia: double finger pan movements get converted to buttons
4,5,6,7.In other words, they are converted to scrollwheel motion. The
finger motion is not reported as cursor motion. pinch zoom in/out and rotate
don't seem to be meaningfully reported. You apparently have to register for
xinput 2.2 events or something to get the position of each finger.

Note that in order to simulate this problem without a touchscreen device, one
could use a second trackpad or wacom digitizer with a modified driver send only
touchscreen compatible events. Or write a program to pop up a window in which
mouse movements (with button down only) are sent to another window as synthetic
mouse movements.

[Bug 1328316] [NEW] reverse filter produces invalid xml

2014-06-09 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Download KML file from here: http://goo.gl/maps/gIhT3

gpsbabel -t -i kml -f TDV2014A.kml -x track,faketime=2010010101+1 -x
track,pack -o gpx -F faketime.gpx

gpsbabel -t -i gpx -f faketime.gpx -x
track,start=2010010101,stop=2010010138 -o kml,points=0,points=0
-F tdv2014_day1_AB.kml

gpsbabel -t -i kml -f tdv2014_day1_AB.kml -x reverse -o kml,points=0 -F
tdv2014_day1_BA.kml
Workaround:
perl -p -i -n -e s/MultiGeometry/MultiGeometryLineStringcoordinates/
tdv2014_day1_BA.kml

Also note that this filter non-consensually separates into multiple
paths, apparently because of duplicate track points.

Another possible workaround is to use a duplicate filter.

Also: Program also non-consensually inserts flags at each data point on
track unless you go out of your way to prevent it using -o kml,points=0,
which isn't even an option on some formats .

[Bug 1211642] [NEW] geopdf support missing without --with-poppler

2013-08-12 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Lacks geoPDF support. GDAL is about the only geoPDF support available
on linux and GeoPDF is now a very important source of GIS data as the
new nationalmap US Topo maps include elevation dataset image tiles and
1m resolution satellite imagery tiles. GRASS GIS requires GDAL to
import geoPDF and GDAL is required to convert geoPDF into the more
widely supported geoTIFF format.

--with-poppler needs to be provided when configure is run and
libpoppler needs to be added as a build/run dependency.

http://www.staygeo.com/2013/03/convert-geopdf-maps-to-geotiff-with-gdal.html
Also, libpopplar needs to have been configured with --enable-xpdf-header

[Bug 1081644] Re: imagej will not display images

2013-07-13 Thread whitis
Haven't used imagej for quite a while. Recently switched from the ATI
proprietary drivers to open source ATI drivers.

wget http://www.albemarleradio.org/gallery2/d/3011-2/6x9-print-0412.jpg
# Note, gallery2 may make url unusable by chaning 3011-2 section.

0:00.019

 imagej 6x9-print-0412.jpg

File loads but it does not open a display window. You can run the
Image-Showinfo and it will show image properties.
By the way, you can't paste the showinfo data because edit-cut and edit-copy
do nothing.

Yes, I have checked for hidden windows under other windoes, minimized,
or on other desktops. Unity left sidebar shows that there is only one
window (the control window).

[Bug 540306] Re: Xsane preview window not working in Karmic

2013-07-13 Thread whitis
I had the same problem with a much newer version.A portion of the
rulers (only the part overwritten by the triangular position mark
sprites) would redraw when I moused over and if I lingered over where
the acquire preview button should be I got a tooltip and was able to
push the button (alt-p was easier) and an image was displayed. But the
dashed lines for the outline were not visable.

I had just recently switched from proprietary ATI driver to open source
driver.

Rather than killing the entire .sane directory, I decided to be more
selective. Deleting just the ~/.sane/xsane/xsane.rc (actually renamed
it xsane.rc.bad) and restarting xsane fixed the problem (while
restarting xsane without deleting did not hellp). But, interestingly,
it was not the contents of this file that caused the problem. The
only difference between the newly created file and the deleted one was
the next filename parameter. So it probably recreated another file as
a result. xane.mdf and HP:7650.drc are newer.

[Bug 1201047] [NEW] .xsession filled entire disk partation ~773GB.

2013-07-13 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Size of .xsession-errors file should be capped.

I was rather surprised to be notified that I had under 1% of disk space left on
my / drive since this is a 1TB partion on a 3TB drive.
Using du and sort to provide lists of large directories, I couldn't figure out
where all the space had gone. I moved and deleted some stuff to make room.
Included in that was the .xsession-errors file which was absolutely enormous.
At the time, I thuoght it was due to years of accumulation. The drive soon
(hour timeframe) filled up again. I couldnt' account for where this space was
used. When I rebooted the machine, I had about 773GB free.

Effectively, by deleting the file which xsession still had open, I had
created an open and unlike style temporary file. Guaraneteed to go
away on program exit or reboot, but unaccountable. Well, it probably
shows up in lsof as (deleted) if you think to look there. And the
following command could be executed BEFORE your disk fills up as it can
be rather difficult afterwards. These are applications which help break
down disk usage. Not they will necessarily run when the disk is full.

sudo apt-get install baobab xdiskusage filelight kdirstat gdmap

I was running a number of applications at the time, but with no disk to write
to I didn't keep good notes. gnome-terminal, emacs, firefox, evince, and
googleearth open. I was probably using eog and display (imagemagick). imagej
was having problems not displaying the image window (still is). gcx was run.
psensor was running. I had been using a number of web browsers I don't
normally use on this machine including konquror, composer, amaya, archne
(dosemu), netsurf, uzbl, midori, google chrome, linx, links2, etc. The page I
was viewing in the extra browsers had an embeded pdf. fldigi might have been
running. Scrbus probably wasn't. localc might have ben. Nautilus. k3b but
that was run after problems started to move stuff off. splat was run (new,
radio propagation program) but was non-graphical - or rather the graphical
output was displayed by google-earth and other programs. gpodder was killed so
it couldn't fill disk. update-manager was probalby running.

I probably had chirpw (radio programming software) open. I had run
flighgear recently but it probably was not open. I was using enguage-
digitizer. I was using totem to play a blu-ray which had been ripped
to a 37GB mkv.

rerunning all the graphical browser and .xsession-errors has not
grown. Likewise psense, enguage, flightgear, imagej, and eog, gcx, and
display. Likewise totem, but have only played a few minutes. And
fldigi. And localc.

Thus, I can't tell you exactly how to reproduce but I am sure there is a
short piece of code that could be written to generate unlimted errors.
Make more than one error type, though, if it has the last error
repeated xx times feature.

I had very recently purged the ATI proprietary display driver (beta)
and reinstalled xorg to get glx to work. System had been up pretty much
since that upgrade (a week or so?).

 I have a 6 headed display card with 2 DVI monitors and 1 display-port-VGA.
xrandr --addmode DisplayPort-0 1600x1200
xrandr --fb 4800x1200 --output DVI-1 --mode 1600x1200 --pos 0x0 --output
DisplayPort-0 --mode 1600x1200 --right-of DVI-1 --output DVI-0 --mode 1600x1200
--right-of DisplayPort-0

There are currently a few menu errors like this in the file.
indicator-weather:2731): LIBDBUSMENU-GLIB-CRITICAL **:
dbusmenu_menuitem_get_children: assertion `DBUSMENU_IS_MENUITEM(mi)' failed
Would not surprise me if dbus is to blame because it has a history of failing
sporadically and breaking GUI applications.

An error just recently appeared. I don't run evolution intentionally.
(evolution-alarm-notify:3249): evolution-alarm-notify-WARNING **: alarm.c:260:
Requested removal of nonexistent alarm!

Ubuntu-bug discouraged me from filing this bug report because Precise
(12.04) is no longer supported. Yet it is the current long term
support version.

Public bug reported:

When run first time, smplayer reports it can't identify smplayer version
and asks you to choose a version. Choosing the latest version does not
work. The smplayer front end does not work with the mplayer back end.
Some of the basic controls (play/pause/seek) work but the video does not
embed/reparent in the player window or appear anywhere else (but you can
hear audio).

Unity and compiz seem to have an inordinate number of windows open.

uptime was a mere 19 days.

I am not running google chrome, lastpass, or MinimizeToTray which have
been blamed for this problem elsewhere.

On a related note, the screensaver can take a very long time to let you
unlock the screen (and actually displays the desktop to prying eyes
before hiding it and displaying the prompt).Last time I needed to
unlock, it would not display the password window. I switched to a
console window and killed it. It has been mentioned that switching to
console and back may free some x server resources.

I have 16GB RAM in this machine.

[Bug 904580] [NEW] spurious horizontal fill lines on unfilled polygons at low zoom levels

2011-12-14 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

When converting state outline data, I found that for various states that
inkscape would perform an unauthorized partial fill of the outline at
various zoom levels, especially low zoom levels. This was seen for all
states combined and for individual state files.

Looks like a classic case of a rasterization/fill algorithm being
confused counting edges by minute details but why is such an algorithm
even running on unfilled region?

What happens if you actually try to fill is an exercise for the reader.

One such state outline is attached.

Converted using: http://www.carto.net/svg/utils/shp2svg/

Preview window must be enabled when xsane starts up or it is corrupted.

While you are at it, fix the preview window so that when you do a real
scan, the real scan data replaces the image in the preview window.

[Bug 898424] [NEW] crashes when openclipart server down

2011-11-30 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

I ran inkscape to browse/search openclipart since the openclipart web
site was down. segfault.

 gdb /usr/bin/inkscape
(gdb) run
file - Import From Open Clip Art Library
Enter a search keyword, doesn't matter what. E.g. biohazard
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x009d8214 in
Inkscape::UI::Dialog::FileImportFromOCALDialog::print_xml_element_names(_xmlNode*)
 ()

www.openclipart.org says:
The site has been experiencing some backend performance issues and is currently
down for maintenance. We will bring the site back online soon when we can
resolve those issues.

The program should not segfault when the server is down. This is
dangerous.

And actually, this function should not have been going to the server in
the first place, without asking. I have the openclipart packages
installed. This function should be able to use either. The SVG files
have filenames, dc:title, and dc:subject, and rdf:Bag (keywords).
Sure, I can use the file import dialog but it has no search. Isn't
this why we install those packages in the first place?

This bug also affects Ubuntu 11.10.And this has resulted in repeated
system crashes as 11.10 will not survive hibernate/wake-up.

[Bug 788415] Re: Can't disable suspend button

2011-11-17 Thread whitis
Instructions here don't work:
http://www.vyvy.org/main/en/node/219

And trying to define a custom key launcher in gnome keyboard settings
don't work (you have to press the key to define it).

I have crashed the system a few times now trying to test if it is
disabled.

You apparently can't disable it in /etc/default/acpi-support because if
gnome-power daemon is running it ignores its own settings and sends the
message there.

There was a time when I had linux system uptimes of over a year.
Regression like this is not acceptable. Some people have gone as far
as removing the suspend/hibernate options from the shutdown menu on
systems where suspend/resume is unreliable. And some disable suspend
buttons on critical systems that should never be allowed to suspend.

upowerd is running, but doesn't seem (from its documentation) to do
anything actually useful, just engage in dbus masturbation.

you probably can't disable it in xmodkeymap since it is probably
intercepted by acpi.

How many programs are involved in handling the keyboard power button?
BIOS ACPI, acpid, X keymap, upowerd, dbus, gnome-power, gconf, pm-utils
(on some distributions), powerdevil, pm-suspend, pm-hibernate,
/etc/acpi/*, etc. And no documentation.

Trying:
sudo perl -p -i -n -e s/acpi_fakekey/#acpi_fakekey/ /etc/acpi/sleepbtn.sh
Of course, when I test this, it will kill the web browser where I am posting
this.

[Bug 788415] Re: Can't disable suspend button

sleepbtn.sh change did not help.

Since software folks are busy indiscriminately breaking things and
failing to respond to reports that things are broken, I am following the
lead of the afforementioned sun conure (parrot) and taking a hardware
approach: I performed a sleep-button-ectomy on the keyboard.

[Bug 77346] Re: No method for submitting CD track listings

2011-06-07 Thread whitis
Fixed? 9 months later and it still looks extremely broken to me.
Ubuntu 11.04. Loaded a disk not in database. Typed in all the artist/track
information. Hit submit to musicbrainz. Redirected my webrowser to
musicbrainz submit page. Had to verify my email (in case this excited any
bugs).NONE of the information I had typed in, or was derived from the disk,
was there. All it had was the name of the artist for the disk and presumably
the disk signature. No album title, No genre, no tracklist titles, no track
length. Not acceptable.

[Bug 179223] Re: File name should have extra options

2011-06-07 Thread whitis
Still a bug on ubuntu 11.04
DISK01_01_This_is_the_title.flac

Notice:
  - leading 0 on disk number.Sets with more than 99 disks would be very
rare but sets with more than 9 disks not so rare especially for non-music
content.
 - leading 0 on track number.Otherwise, players and ls sort tracks
incorrectly. Even though rhythmbox and sound-juicer seem to share the same
code base, rhythmbox used two digits and sound-juicer used 1.
- No dashes. This is ridiculous
  Disc 1 - 10_-_Waves_Within.flac
- No unnecessary spaces.
- No spaces that don't get converted to underscores when you click the option
to convert inappropriate characters to underscores.

grip let user configure the file naming exactly the way you wanted it.
You can provide easy options for dummies but don't drag everyone down to
the windoze user least common denominator. Format strings should be
provided and the easy options would just be a list of predefined format
strings.

[Bug 794375] [NEW] meta: multiple bugs, poor overall quality

2011-06-07 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sound-juicer

I am dismayed by the decline in CD ripper quality on ubuntu, as typified
by sound-juicer/rhythmbox (apparently same code base). Many years ago,
I used grip. Grip let you tell it what you wanted it to do and it did
it right, every time. Now, grip has been orphaned, isn't even packaged
for ubuntu, and hasn't had musicbrainz support added. And now the
default is sound-juicer, which is crippled and unreliable, and most of
the others are not packaged or similarly broken.

 - First bug: failure to remove special characters from filenames when
told to do so, if a disk prefix was added. Commented on existing bug
report.

 - Second bug: failure to use leading zeros (%02d) in disk number and,
worse, track number. Commented on existing bug report.

- Third bug: failure to support freedb as well as musicbrainz. If the
disk isn't on musicdomains, look at freedb. The software already
exists to do so. Almost all of my discs were entered into cddb or
freedb a decade ago but many are not in musicbrainz.grip could
support two music databases.

- Fourth bug: Failure to store entered data locally.
grip/freedb/cddb had a cache.I typed it, there should be a copy on
my computer. (Unfortunately this file has been lost over the years).
I entered a CD in rhythmbox and sound-juicer couldn't find it.

- Fifth bug: Failure to properly submit info to musicbrainz. Saw this
on rhythmbox. Commented on existing bug. All that made the trip was
the artist name and maybe the disk signature.

- Sixth bug: failure to adequately inform the user that they have been
redirected to musicbrainz and need to enter data there to complete the
submission.So it gets lost.

- Seventh bug: failure to give user control over ripping paranoia level.
sound-juicer goes fast and rhythmbox goes very slow and neither gives
you control.

- Eighth bug: including unnecessary spaces and dashes in filenames. commented
on existing bug.
   Disc 1 - 10_-_Waves_Within.flac is ridiculous.Dashes should be avoided
in file names, they can be mistaken for switches.
   Keep it simple: Disc01_10_Waves_Within.flac

- Ninth bug: debilitating dbus errors.commented on existing bug.
why does this program even need to use something as unreliable and non-
portable as dbus.It isn't like it has some cool integration features
with other software, it can't even get copy and paste right. If you
are going to interact with dbus/gnome/kde or whatever other freedesktop
nonsense, make it so it can be compiled out and you can fallback
gracefully if it is used but isn't working.

- Tenth bug: Advertised ability to play disks in rhythmbox is a joke.
You have a play button. That is it. You can click on a track. You
do not have track-forward, track-backwards, eject, fast-forward, or
rewind buttons.Try playing an audiobook where you need to rewind.
You don't have control over whether you play via the internal audio
cable or digitally pipe the audio. You do not have the ability to
play disks while you are ripping them (play out of the ripped file).
To be fair, grip didn't let you play the files you were ripping.

- 11th bug: dumbing down of filename formats. commented on an
existing bug.grip let you use format strings, as it should. Dumbed
down version should just let you choose from some preconfigured format
strings.

- 12th bug: limited to only one rip format. You should be able to rip
to a lossless format such as flac and schedule background conversion to
lossy formats such as ogg and/or mp3.With multiple threads
(configurable in number and nice level) in light of the fact that modern
processors have more cores rather than more speed. grip did not have
the ability to do multiple encodes, either, but it did let you set the
number of background processes/cpus and nice level. Now, I can do this
with scripts/utilities. But if you want to dumb things down for
unskilled users, this is something they can't easily do for themselves.

- 13th bug: inconsistently fails to eject disk. grip had a work around
fault eject, if that is the problem.

- 14th bug: fails to support many musicbrainz data fields

- 15th bug: limited configuration for directory structure:
  Music/flac
  Music/mp3
  Music/ogg
I don't want the music players to play each track three times and putting
them in the same directory limits

- 16th bug: you can't eject a disc without losing your typed
information or automatically acquired info like track lengths. Like,
for example, to read the track information, year, title, artist name,
etc. off the disk label. You should be able to put the disc in, take
it out, and not have to do it again. I am missing the inserts to many
of my CDs stored in binders and even when I have the inserts, sometimes
you want to look for information that may be on the disk and not the
insert. You should be able to tell if the same disc is

[Bug 792868] [NEW] displays many xkb dialogs that won't go away

2011-06-04 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

bugs:
   - displaying dialog boxes that do not identify the program issuing them
   - displaying multiple copies of the same dialog
   - dialogs will not go away when you click close or the x icon.It isn't
just that there are other copies hiding underneath; if you move them they still
don't go away.
   - dialog text will not cut and paste
   - had to use kill -9 rather than kill to get rid of gnome-settings-daemon

This isn't about the error occurring, it is about badly mishandling the
dialogs.

circumstances involved replugging keyboard, a full disk, and dbus
failing due to full disk.

unplugged and reconnected keyboard and gnome-settings-daemon displayed a large
number of windows, which would not go away, with the following message (and
failing to identify as gnome-settings-daemon - I had to run xprop to identify
the program displaying window):
   Error activating XKB configuration
It can happen under various circumstances
   - a bug in libxklavier library
   - a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmod, xmodmap utilities)
   - X server with incompatable libxkbfile implementation
  X server version data:
  The X.Org Foundation
  11001000
If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
   - the result of xprop -root | grep XKB
   - the result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
Window was not cut and pastable
kill -i on gnome-settings-daemon, then restarted. Until restarted
screen/window appearance changed.
ubuntu-bug failed with dbus error message, started working after fixing disk
space.

Volume filesystem root has zero disk space remaining. Clicking examine
pulled up disk usage analyzer (slow) 845.2GB in /tmp. wireshark was
using 800+GB (for some reason failed to stop recording USB Video Class
data).

unplugging/replugging keyboard again didn't bring up the message again
so the lack of disk space was probably the cause.

[Bug 792947] [NEW] The application cannot be started. A general error occurred while accessing your central configuration.

2011-06-04 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libreoffice

localc
OR
lodraw
OR
libreoffice
ETC.

You get the following popup:
The application cannot be started.
A general error occurred while accessing your central configuration.
Afterwards, you get the following on the tty:
[Java framework] Error in function createSettingsDocument (elements.cxx).
javaldx failed!

Running as root this doesn't happen.

Upgrading to the latest did not help.

This same message seems to be plauging people with various different
causes.

Stupid message. Which central configuration are you trying to access
and how.

I have no ~/.config/.libreoffice-whatever
I do have a ~/.openoffice.org and ~/.openoffice.org2 directories, with correct
ownership.
dbus is running, though it had problems earlier (but if it wasn't running
ubuntu-bug would have died).
gnome-settings-daemon has been restarted.
I have not intentionally installed any extensions.

[Bug 788415] [NEW] Can't disable suspend button

2011-05-25 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

gnome-power-manager does not allow you to set the suspend button to Do
Nothing or Ask Me.It does have these options for the power button
which is generally harder to hit by accident.

This is a bug, not a feature request as argued in #712650.System is
behaving in a non-consensual manner which can endanger the integrity of
the system. Suspend button on Dynex DX-WKBD is located on corner of
keyboard and very easy to bump.It was possible to disable this key
in previous ubuntu/debian releases; indeed since a parrot used to share
the workstation, it was necessary to disable all particularly
destructive keys like suspend and window close. Also related to
expired bug #492030.

[Bug 644042] [NEW] crippled

2010-09-20 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Not only did you cripple ffmpeg so that it doesn't support encoding to
most commonly used formats but you also failed to include webm/vp8
support, and you disabled support for existing codecs before adding vp8.
And the version of ffmpeg is way behind upstream. So, upgrading ffmpeg
turned into a major downgrade.

Yeah, there are IP issues with the codecs. blah. blah. blah. People
have been using ffmpeg for a decade. And you spring this change on us
without our knowledge or consent, breaking most uses of the package and
don't even have the decency to call the package ffmpeg-crippled, let
alone provide a non-free package to uncripple it.

[Bug 615454] [NEW] split screen mode needed

2010-08-09 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: maximus

Maximus desparately needs a split screen mode - i.e. a two window
horizontally or vertically tiled mode.

Forget lame excuses about being able to switch to desktop mode (which
you can only do by logging out and back in, if then, which is
unaccepable). This is a hobsons choice between two unaccepable
alternatives: One desktop which is very cumbersome on a netbook screen
and another that is unusable because you can't refer to a second window
while working.

Sometimes, you absolutely must see another window while you are typing
in the first.

If the codebase isn't cruft, there is a quick and dirty way to do this with
minimal changes to the code and the user interface.
  - Add an icon on the top bar which lets you switch between full screen, 2
window horizontal split, and 2 window vertical split, and maybe a 2x2.
  - left/top window displays the current program and the other displays the
2nd most recent program.
  - Optional slider to move the split.
This provides a reasonable compromise and should be trivial to implement.

Long term, you really need to be able to switch between one window mode
and normal desktop interface on the fly.

ProblemType: Bug
