[Bug 1073442] Re: [HP EliteBook 8560w] Screen goes blank upon reboot after successful installation of Ubuntu 12.10(64bit) desktop version
Hello Chris, On Hewlett Packard HP8560w notebook, I updated the BIOS to F.29 from F.26. Using the previous ubuntu 13.04 harddisk, I did a reinstallation using raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January23. The installation was successful. I did 10 times of reboot and there was no problem found. I can surf the internet. Previously no ubuntu sound upon boot up but now have already. Thanks alot. [Bug 1073442] Re: [HP EliteBook 8560w] Screen goes blank upon reboot after successful installation of Ubuntu 12.10(64bit) desktop version
Chris, I do not need a backport. When I google Ubuntu backport, it mentioned that Backports offers a way to selectively provide newer versions of software for older Ubuntu releases. What I mean is that when I downloaded raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January23 and installed on Hewlett Packard Elitebook HP8560w notebook, the installation hanged at the screen asking whether user want to Download updates while installing and whether user wants to Install third party software. On this HP8560w notebook, I plugged in a harddisk previously used for Fedora 18 testing. It might be due to the fact that the Ubuntu 13.04 installation software could not recognize the harddisk file systems of Fedora 18 and subsequently hanged. There was no harddisk read or write activity and no ethernet activity on my ADSL modem. Next. On this same HP8560w notebook, I inserted a DVD with ubuntu-12.04 -server-amd64.iso and installed Ubuntu 12.04. The objective is to have a Ubuntu file system on this HP8560w harddisk. I repeated the above steps and able to proceed to completion the whole installation process. I noticed the whole installation process takes only 20 minutes which is unusual. I had installed Ubuntu 10 and 11 on this HP8560w notebook and it is usually an hour long. Hope this is clear enough to explain my guess on what could gone wrong. Please let me know when is your next final release for ubuntu 13.04 for me to do another round of testing. Thanks alot and for your appropriate action. [Bug 1073442] Re: [HP EliteBook 8560w] Screen goes blank upon reboot after successful installation of Ubuntu 12.10(64bit) desktop version
Hello Chris, I did not update the BIOS still at F.26 I downloaded raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January21. The installation went fine but hanged after the screen asking whether user want to Download updates while installing and whether user wants to Install third party software. I did not realised until after 2.5hours. ADSL internet lights was not blinking indicated no data transfer over internet and harddisk light not blinking indicating no harddisk read or write activities. Next I downloaded raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January23. The same sequence of events happened as described above for raring-desktop- amd64.iso dated 2013January21. I shut down the whole system after 20minutes. In the end, the harddisk that I plugged in was previously used to install Fedora 18 for testing purposes. I used ubuntu-12.04-server- amd64.iso to install onto this harddisk as the purpose is to re- partition and re-format the harddisk into ubuntu standard. I re- inserted in raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January23 and able to complete the whole installation process. I reboot the whole system 10 times and no problem was found. Great Job! Chris! Well done! In Windows 7 OS, I run HP Support Assistant and it did not indicate my notebook needs to update any BIOS. I will check with HP service centre on why it did not prompt me to update BIOS from F.26 to F.29 . If there is no problem in updating the BIOS, I will update you again whether any problems or not exist for raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January23. Thank you and have a nice day. [Bug 1073442] Re: [HP EliteBook 8560w] Screen goes blank upon reboot after successful installation of Ubuntu 12.10(64bit) desktop version
TH Tan, thank you for your comments. Regarding them https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1073442/comments/72 : Initially I installed ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso and upon reboot there was blank sceen. We all knew this already as this is mentioned in your Bug Description. If I just $sudo dpkg -i *.deb with v3.6-quantal and managed to do a re-boot and log into launchpad again. Is there any problem with another re-boot or a few more re-boot with ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso? You would be telling me this, as you have the hardware and I do not. If I want to test whether the USB3 port or eSATAp port any problem? do I post another questions? Who are the people taking care of this. If you have USB3 port or eSATAp port questions, you are welcome to engage the Questions for linux in Ubuntu answers support tracker via https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux , as well as other support methods http://www.ubuntu.com/support . For the next release of ubuntu 12.10 or higher version do I have to continue to do $sudo dpkg -i *.deb with v3.6-quantal and managed to do a re-boot or numerous re-boot to see if the problem is still there, In order to address the boot issue in a currently supported release, and future ones, the next step is to find out the last bad mainline kernel version, followed consecutively in version by the first good one. Currently, we know that mainline kernel v3.6-quantal fixes the boot problem, and downstream/Ubuntu kernel 3.5.0-17.28 (based on mainline 3.5.5 as per http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu- quantal.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/tags/Ubuntu-3.5.0-17.28 ) is the last one to demonstrate the problem. Hence, could you please test http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/v3.5.6-quantal/ and comment on the results? [Bug 1073442] Re: [HP EliteBook 8560w] Screen goes blank upon reboot after successful installation of Ubuntu 12.10(64bit) desktop version
TH Tan, thank you for testing Lucid. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example: kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.7-rc3-raring This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER As well, please remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags: kernel-unable-to-test-upstream kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER Please let us know your results. [Bug 1073442] Re: [HP EliteBook 8560w] Screen goes blank upon reboot after successful installation of Ubuntu 12.10(64bit) desktop version
Christopher, I guess you are trying to isolate when the problem started. This hewlett packard HP8560w is a new notebook just started selling beginning of 2012. after installing http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ I can't access the internet. Same ADSL modem with the same hardware setup nothing is changed. Here is my alternate work around as stated below paragraphs. I remember I do not need to do anything but leave the ADSL modem to be on to access internet. Please advice if you know what is wrong. Is it ok I downloaded http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ and checked whether can I reboot without the screen going blank first? If no blank screen after reboot then I will proceed to do your post #46 to isolate which KernelMainlineBuild is causing the problem. If blank screen again after reboot, I will download http://releases.ubuntu.com/oneiric/ and checked whether can I reboot without the screen going blank again? If no blank screen after reboot then I will proceed to do your post #46 to isolate which KernelMainlineBuild is causing the problem. Hello Christopher, Post#46 line 5 Once you've tested the upstream kernel,... what do you mean by upstream kernel? For example ubuntu12.10 was released on 17October2012 with linux kernel library module version 3.5.0-17-generic, you mean use linux kernel library module version 3.6 or later than 17October2012? is this correct? [Bug 1073442] Re: [HP EliteBook 8560w] Screen goes blank upon reboot after successful installation of Ubuntu 12.10(64bit) desktop version
Hello Christopher, Thanks alot. I am able to reboot 10 times with no problem now. You are great! Thanks again. I would like to do basic functional tests on some of the peripheral ports like USB2 or USB3 port or eSATAp port or Firewire port for the next few days. I need to borrow these devices from others and connect to hp8560w to do basic functional tests. I will write to you again on the results after testing. I just want to check that the device drivers are present. ** Tags removed: needs-upstream-testing ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream ** Tags removed: kernel-fixed-upstream ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.6-quantal -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1073442 Title: [HP EliteBook 8560w] Screen goes blank upon reboot after successful installation of Ubuntu 12.10(64bit) desktop version To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1073442/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1073442] Re: [HP EliteBook 8560w] Screen goes blank upon reboot after successful installation of Ubuntu 12.10(64bit) desktop version
TH Tan, thank you for testing the mainline kernel. Regarding your comments https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1073442/comments/68 : Post#46 line 5 Once you've tested the upstream kernel,... what do you mean by upstream kernel? Upstream = mainline. For example ubuntu12.10 was released on 17October2012 with linux kernel library module version 3.5.0-17-generic The linux kernel that comes with Ubuntu by default is not the mainline/upstream kernel, but the Ubuntu/downstream one. you mean use linux kernel library module version 3.6 or later than 17October2012? is this correct? As you tested v3.6-quantal this would be sufficient. Regarding https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1073442/comments/69 : Thanks alot. I am able to reboot 10 times with no problem now. You are great! Thanks again. Glad the boot problem is addressed with the mainline kernel. While that is great you are willing to do such tests, this bug report is the wrong forum for providing the results of them. This bug report is only focused on the boot problem. Hello Christopher, Though the volume bar is at the centre, there was no sound during reboot. Christopher, if i did not remember wrongly before Quantal the hp8560w screen goes blank after installation of iso file n a reboot. At quantal after installation of iso file i can see the bootup screen but i did not repeatedly do a reboot so I think the problem might be there already at quantal. It is just that i need not repeatedly do a reboot so my statement earlier that said quantal has no problem i got to delete it. Please advice what to do next after your careful analysis.
