[Bug 1080701] Re: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs
I want to reinstall Ubuntu (17.04) and have a complex partition layout. After over 60 minutes where installer freeze, it shows me the new pre-calculated partition layout. But I do not want to change the layout. I wond install on the exiting partitions. So I choose Manual. Can not this be queried first, whether Manual or not? So you do not have to wait so long each time? It is not the first time that i reinstall Ubuntu. So i know installer is not crash and i must only wait for a couple of times. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1080701 Title: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubiquity/+bug/1080701/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1080701] Re: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs
Had to deal with this problem installing Xubuntu 16.04. It happened on a specific machine, but it was replicated with different USB sticks, with different ISOs. Previously, there was a 250 GB failing Xubuntu extended partition with a root mount point and Swap, and a 10GB NTFS partition with backups. What DID work for me: What Codeslinger (#88) suggested and Dan Kegel (#122) confirmed: mounting another (not related at all) partition. In my case, I mounted the NTFS partition in /media/foo. When I reached "Preparing to install Ubuntu", a dialog appeared asking if I wanted to unmount it. I replied "No", and for the first time the installation dialog didn't freeze loading the next step. The rest of the installation was completely normal. What did NOT work for me: - Deleting the previously failing Xubuntu extended partition. - Unselecting the "install updates" option. - Unselecting the "install third party software" option. - Changing language (I was installing it in spanish and thought maybe it was that, but it wasn't).
For my machine, I checked dmesg and saw the raid6_pq module had crashed, and its modprobe process was hanging unkillable (presumably what locks up the installer). I'd guess that ubiquity is loading this module, and it crashes when it encounters something in the partitions it doesn't like, probably involving block sizes or alignment - I wasn't using RAID, but I was using a USB-SATA adaptor with a GPT disk label. My successful workaround was to, in the live filesystem, delete/move the raid6_pq.ko module file and then run the installer. I'll add more details later, when I have access to the machine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to ubiquity in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1080701 Title: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubiquity/+bug/1080701/+subscriptions -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1080701] Re: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs
I suffered this problem when shifting from 12.04 to a clean install of 13.04 with twin hard disks and a dual-boot to Windows. The 'Disk Setup' stage refused to recognise existing partitions or free space. Partman usually exited with error code 141 but sometimes crashed. I lost three days days of my life and became intimately acquainted with testdisk. Eventually I tracked the fault to the existence of dmraid metadata on the two hard drives. It was not shown up by testdisk but was listed by dmraid. [Bug 1080701] Re: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs
Happens for me with both beta 2 and today's daily, on 2 out of 3 machines tested. All three systems are dual-boot and have plain old pc style extended partition tables. comment 88 suggested that turning off swap might work around the problem, but it didn't seem to for me :-( comments 88 and 121 suggested that mounting a partition might work around the problem. I can confirm this; on the first machine I tried, doing ctl-alt-f1 and 'sudo mkdir /media/foo; sudo mount /dev/sda5 /media/foo', then clicking Continue brought up a warning box Unmount partitions that are in use? Clicking 'No' on that dialog let me get to the Installation type dialog, and installation worked fine from there. Yay! Given that this affected 2 out of my 3 machines, this seems like a release blocker; not fixing it before release will probably result in widespread knowledge of this workaround and a few hits to Ubuntu's reputation. I'm happy to retest if there's progress. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1080701 Title: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1080701/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1080701] Re: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs
I can confirm Dan Kegel's experience in comment #122 was the same as I had on my machine. Mounting a partition I would not be using with nautilus and answering no to the in the installer's prompt allowed me to continue. [Bug 1080701] Re: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs
I may, OR MAY NOT, be onto something here. But before I proceed let me point out that I'm not shouting when I use all caps .. I'm just stressing a point which may or may not be important. I've spent several hours testing this with very little rest so cut me some slack :^) You will have to read to the end to see what I suspect the problem might be!!! I'm totally ignorant when it comes to using VM's other than using testdrive w/virtualbox in a simple live test, so I use mostly bare metal. In this case I'm using: VIA C7 CPU @ 1500MHz VIA CN700/P4M800 Pro/P4M800 CE/VN800 Graphics [S3 UniChrome Pro] (rev 01) VIA VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60) Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 78) 1GB DDR2 RAM It's not adequate to run Ubuntu itself but it will run both Lubuntu and Xubuntu. I prefer Lubuntu. I tried yesterday with an Lubuntu i386 20130418 Live DVD creating a situation where I thought this bug would manifest: I used only an 80GB IDE drive and created 3 primary partitions with one logical partition for swap. I then used something else (aka: manual partitioning) to install three Lubuntu's. After doing so I plugged in a USB flash drive that I use for transferring data - that drive MUST NOT be a bootable drive! Then I rebooted to try another installation (whether it be to replace an existing install or resize) and it appeared to hang so I thought, OK this is easy to reproduce. At that point I took a prolonged toilet break - maybe 10 to 15 minutes - but when I came back the busy-wheel had stopped spinning so I decided I'd just been impatient. NOW, we move onto todays testing. I was very methodical: Step #1: With only the 80GB drive connected I performed an entire disc install using an Lubuntu i386 20130418 Live DVD. No problem. Step #2: I rebooted the same DVD and then performed an auto-resize test choosing a new partition size of about 15GB, again no problem. Step #3: I rebooted the same DVD and used Gparted to shrink sda1, create 2 new primary partitions, each about 15GB, and free space of about 15GB. I then started a new “install alongside” test, but since I now had adequate free space the Continue button showed Install now as expected. Once again this installation completed with no problems. So I now had: lance@lance-VIA-desktop:~$ sudo parted -l [sudo] password for lance: Model: ATA WDC WD800BB-63JK (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 80.0GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: msdos Number Start End SizeType File system Flags 1 1049kB 15.8GB 15.7GB primary ext4boot -- entire disc install 3 15.8GB 31.5GB 15.7GB primary ext4-- not used yet 4 31.5GB 47.2GB 15.7GB primary ext4-- not used yet 2 47.2GB 80.0GB 32.8GB extended 7 47.2GB 64.0GB 16.8GB logical ext4 -- free space test 6 64.0GB 79.0GB 15.0GB logical ext4 -- auto-resize test 5 79.0GB 80.0GB 1005MB logical linux-swap(v1) It shouldn’t matter but just to be thorough I’ll mention that sda7 in charge of booting ATM since it was the last installed. Step #4: I shut down the computer and connected a 30GB drive as “slave that I’d used yesterday with the same DVD to perform an entire disc install. And I check in BIOS that the 80GB is still the boot drive before proceeding. I then run “update-grub”: lance@lance-VIA-desktop:~$ sudo update-grub [sudo] password for lance: Generating grub.cfg ... When I tried the next install, I was hoping to install manually to either sda3 or sda4 but it again appeared to hang. So once again I took a prolonged break, this time to feed the dogs and make a pot of coffee - like I need more caffeine ;^/ Once again after a prolonged break (maybe 15 to 20 minutes) I come back and find that the spinning wheel has stopped spinning. But now, being the dummy that I am, I notice for the first time that Raring includes a System column in ubiquity. That was not present in Quantal and I tried booting Quantal to try an install which appeared like it would work OK QUICKLY, but I didn't complete it. So let's think for a moment. Did adding the system ID thing to ubiquity contribute to this bug?? Maybe whatever process is identifying existing system info is simply slowing the process so much that the user thinks things are hung when in fact that process is still reading. Does that make any sense at all? -- You received this

[Bug 1080701] Re: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs
Here's what seems to reproduce it for me on Ubuntu Server: 13.04 Server Variant, 64-bit PowerEdge R620 with a 840GB Hardware RAID 5 I'm trying to do a clean install of 13.04 Server on a system that currently has Fedora 18 installed. The disk layout on the Fedora system is as follows: /dev/sda1 /boot 500M /dev/sda2 lvm-physical volume, 836GB 1 Volume group created from the pv above 3 Logical Volumes (50GB, 780GB, 4GB for /, /home, and swap respectively) The server installation works fine until we get to the partitioning stage. At that point, I see the progress bar that says Starting up the Partitioner. That finishes just fine. What I expect to see next, however, is the partitioning screen asking me how I want to partition my disk. Instead, all I see is a blank, purple screen that seems to sit there indefinitely. The only way I've been able to get around this is if I wipe the disks out before installing OR if the system has a simple partitioning scheme (i.e. no LVM, etc.) things work as expected. [Bug 1080701] Re: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs
further thoughts... now that I have done half-a-dozen full installs plus many tests... I think some of the reports above of failures are actually false positives. What many people probably do not realize is that partman is very slow... I have not benchmarked it for the exact timing, but it's on the order of several minutes to perform it's disk checks prior to displaying the menu. This long delay could easily be mistaken for a hung session. You must wait for 5 to 10 minutes before you conclude that it is actually hung and not just being slow. However, having said that... I must also say that so far the only totally relaible way that I have found to get partman to work, is to turn off the auto-mounted swap before runnung the installer. As far as where to begin, in order to find the problem, the chief observation is that I don't recall encountering any problems when installing 12.10 and I am certain that the install of 12.04 was trouble- free. So to track down this problem I suggest starting by comparing what changed. The script itself is archiac legacy code... I know that shell, sed and awk have a grand old tradition in the history of *nix, but really and truely it is a horrible way to do programming. perhaps it is time for a full rewrite? several pieces are already written in python, why not convert the whole thing to python? and get rid of those unix sockets too since that is undoubtly where the hangs are occuring. just a thought...

Another me too! for this bug. Some details on my partition setup that may be relevant is that my windows partition has had an ntfs error on it for about a month or so. I haven't needed to boot into Windows lately :-D but I still need the data. I have installed both openSUSE 12.3 Fedora 17 without any issues on the same system. It looks like the partman program is telling ubiquity about the ntfs error and ubiquity has no idea what to make of it so it just runs partman over and over again. This all happens in the background with no indication to the end user or a timeout error. There should definitly be a timeout implemented because casual users wont know where to look to see what's happeneing. I will attach the few logs I have. Hopefully it is helpful. This bug is also present in netboot installer (text mode, version 20101020ubuntu227, 02-Apr-2013), confirmed 5 minutes ago. I use 3 HDDs, two of which are mdraid mirror. The swapoff -a trick didnt work for me, but as Roman Yepishev (thanks rye!) suggested, feedeing two OKs to /var/lib/partman/outfifio helped: echo OK /var/lib/partman/outfifio Each OK produced this dmesg line: kernel: [timestamp] brtfs: open /dev/sdf1 failed After two OKs, got into partitioner menu, and the business could be done as usual. Now, /dev/sdf1 is just one of the mdraid (ID:FD) partitions, and it is ext4, WTF brtfs fails on it? Could this be a brtfs module problem? [Bug 1080701] Re: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs
the follwoing is a follow up to a discussion with cjwatson on #ubuntu-installer fresh boot from flash drive or DVD swap is mounted no other partitions are mounted partman is not running/hung Start Install select English [continue] [x] Install this third party software [continue] At this point partman is launched. result: partman.failed.r2.txt Analysis: Fundamentally there are multiple seperate bugs here, and they all interact to create the very erratic behavior that has been widely observed. The primary issue is that if partman fails for any reason, then instead of exiting, it hangs. When the installer gets run again, it will start a new partman process, the new partman process will also hang because of the existance of the previously hung partman process. This will occur even if the original error condition has been cleared. By starting the installer multiple times, you will get multiple hung partman processes, one for each invocation. The presence of any hung partman process will cause the new partman process to hang. This accounts for a lot of the erratic behavior that people are seeing. Partman has two modes. The first mode is that it requires the partitons to be unmounted. The second mode is that it will ignore(allow) the fact that partitions are mounted. When partman is initially invoked, it checks to see if there are any partitions mounted. If it finds any mounted partitions, it prompts the user to see if they would like to unmount the partitons or to ignore the fact that the partitions are mounted. For mode one, partman will attempt to unmount the mounted partitions. If for any reason -- such as a file that is in use -- that partman fails to unmount the partitons, then partman will hang. Once partman is hung, the behavior is as described above. For mode two, if the user chooses to continue while allowing the partitons to remain mounted, then partman will work as expected. This is why users are able to coax partman into working by both having a mounted partiton and by telling partman to ignore the mounted partitions. now for the tricky bug... if the swap file is mounted, partman does not prompt the user about the fact that it is mounted. Neither does partman attempt to unmount the swap partition. Instead partman will hang when it later realizes that the swap partiton is mounted. If on the other hand, another partition is mounted, then partman will prompt as above, and if the user chooses to ignore the mounted partitions, then partman will also ignore the mounted swap partition. This is the crux of the observed erratic behavior. Once partman decides to ignore the swap it will function as expected. Partman will work if the swap partition is not mounted and no other partition is mounted. Partman will also work if the swap partiton is mounted and at least one other partition is mounted... which causes partman to prompt about the partitions, AND the user chooses to ignore them. In all other scenarios partman will fail. Summary: Partman fails to turn off the swap file. Partman fails to prompt the user about the presence of the swap file. Partman can fail to unmount a partiton that is in use, after prompting the user. Any failure will cause partman to hang. Once partman is hung, it stays hung even after quiting the installer. The presence of a hung partman process will cause subsequent install attempts to also fail. They must either be killed manually or the computer rebooted. It may be that under some circuimstances, partman does succeed in turning off the swap file, or for some other reason the swap file is not activated. When this happens then partman works as expected. === When partman is hung, it looks like this: root 8364 0.0 0.0 6436 396 ?S03:35 0:00 log-output -t ubiquity --pass-stdout sh -c /usr/share/ubiquity/activate-dmraid /bin/partman root 8365 0.0 0.0 4440 624 ?S03:35 0:00 sh -c /usr/share/ubiquity/activate-dmraid /bin/partman root 8371 0.0 0.0 4572 892 ?S03:35 0:00 /bin/sh /bin/partman root 8496 0.1 0.0 24628 1112 ?S03:35 0:00 parted_server root 9485 0.0 0.0 4572 880 ?S03:35 0:00 /bin/sh /lib/partman/display.d/10initial_auto root 10634 0.0 0.0 4572 592 ?S03:36 0:00 /bin/sh /lib/partman/display.d/10initial_auto root 10730 0.0 0.0 4572 896 ?S03:36 0:00 /bin/sh /lib/partman/automatically_partition/15reuse/choices ** Attachment added: partman log of failure when swap file is active https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1080701/+attachment/3619695/+files/partman.failed.r2a.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is

i worked around this bug by creating, in a terminal window, mount points and mounting 6 of the 9 ntfs, ext4 partitions and a swap partition on my 4 drives, two standard and two ssd. these 6 are other OSes and data partitions that are not used as system partitions. i then run # swapoff -a. i leave 2 ext4 and the 1 swap not mounted and these are my target partitions for the install. after the preparing to install runs (YAY) and a dialog asks if i want it to unmount the mounted partitions, i select no or cancel or whatever the do not unmount option is. it tells me that the resize functionality will not work, but i have done all that before hand. then the partitioner is launched and i manually umount all drives i manually mounted in the terminal window that i used to create them in and enter the new mount points into the partitioner. i don't think the mount points matter what they are called or where i mount them as long as the partitions that i am not going to install to are mounted. i've only done this on my one machine. | x58/ich10r | i7-950 | 6@2GB 1600 3x channel | geforce gt240 1GB | 24 16:9 / 19 8:5 | 2@120GB ssd / 500GB / 1TB / dvd+-rw sata ahci | 600W | -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1080701 Title: After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring installation hangs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubiquity/+bug/1080701/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Why are people posting issues that are related to not booting? And yes, this issue is still present in the latest nightly build.
