[Bug 1280881] Re: Does not detect hotplugged storage device (WD Elements 1TB)

2014-08-05 Thread Martin Pitt
Closing. Adrian as the original reporter said it's fixed for him in
final 14.04, and I didn't get an answer from akete in 2 months. Please
reopen if you are still experiencing this. Thanks!

Is there any development about this bug? Any idea on which was the fix?
Currently there is a similar bug for Fedora 20

[Bug 1280881] Re: Does not detect hotplugged storage device (WD Elements 1TB)

2014-06-02 Thread Martin Pitt
So for akete there is a kernel-side add event for sdb1, but no
corresponding udev event. And no change events at all.

I have no idea why based on the current data (this generally works), so
more questions for akete:

 * Is this problem specific to this USB hard drive (WD Elements), i. e.
do other things like USB sticks, SD cards etc. work?

 * Is this problem specific to your desktop/laptop, i. e. does the
device work on other systems?

 * Please disconnect the device, run sudo udevadm control --log-
priority=debug, and re-connect. After about 10 seconds, please attach
/var/log/syslog here. This might have an error message that points out
what's going on and wrong.

Thanks!

[Bug 1280881] Re: Does not detect hotplugged storage device (WD Elements 1TB)

2014-03-06 Thread Martin Pitt
OK, so that works fine. So this seems to be an issue during hotplugging.
I notice that in the original UdevMonitorLog.txt there is no sdb1 at
all (i. e. the actual partition on the sdb drive), but it's definitively
present in the kernel log (CurrentDmesg.txt). That could just be an
artifact of the apport symptom not waiting long enough, or an actual
kernel/udev bug, so let's try.

Please disconnect the drive, then open a Terminal, and run

  stdbuf -oL udevadm monitor -e 21 | tee /tmp/monitor.log

and connect the drive. Let it settle, i. e. wait until you see no
further output for 20 seconds or so. Press Control-C to stop udevadm.
Does this reproduce the faulty case, i. e. you don't get an automatic
mount of the drive and a file manager popup?

Please attach /tmp/monitor.log here. Thanks!

This bug also affects me. -- Lenovo Thinkpad E325 (USB 2.0 ports),

After some testing I can submit additional information:
- disk gets detected and mounted properly on same machine using live usb
(LinuxMint 13 - based on Precise; kernel 3.2.0-23-generic 32bit)

Indeed it seems that there is no file system on that partition. Can you
please attach the drive and copypaste the output of

?

[Bug 1280881] Re: Does not detect hotplugged storage device (WD Elements 1TB)

2014-02-28 Thread Adrian Frith
As requested:

# blkid -p /dev/sdb1
/dev/sdb1: LABEL=ElementsSmall UUID=6822170D55D13F29 TYPE=ntfs
USAGE=filesystem PART_ENTRY_SCHEME=dos PART_ENTRY_TYPE=0x7
PART_ENTRY_NUMBER=1 PART_ENTRY_OFFSET=2048 PART_ENTRY_SIZE=1953456128
PART_ENTRY_DISK=8:16

There is definitely a partition and a filesystem there, since I can
manually mount the filesystem using 'mount' on the commandline. Here is
the partition table from 'fdisk':

# fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Disk /dev/sdb: 1000.2 GB, 1000170586112 bytes
38 heads, 40 sectors/track, 1285169 cylinders, total 1953458176 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x4d7da5b1

[Bug 1280881] Re: Does not detect hotplugged storage device (WD Elements 1TB)

2014-02-16 Thread Adrian Frith
** Description changed:

- My WD Elements 1TB drive does not automatically mount when connected.
+ My WD Elements 1TB drive does not automatically mount when connected,
+ although I can mount it manually with 'mount'.

  Some things I have noticed:

  1. While the device /dev/sdb1 (for the only partition on the drive) is
created, it is given permissions 600 and belongs to group root, whereas for
other drives the device is given permissions 660 and belongs to group disk.
  2. The usual symlinks to the device are not created in /dev/disk/by-uuid/ or
/dev/disk/by-label/.
  3. This problem appeared with the out-of-the-box partition table; I have
blanked the first 100MB of the disk with dd, recreated the partition table and
reformatted, but it still happens.
  4. 'udevadm info /dev/sdb1' gives very perfunctory output for this drive,
compared to the copious output for other drives.
  5. 'udisksctl info -b /dev/sdb1' responds 'Error looking up object for device
/dev/sdb1'.
