Yes, a similar issue has cropped up again in 11.04. Wanted to add my 2 cents here to get things up and running again. I'm running on the following: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02) I've 'upgraded' with the GTT Incoherency Patch since video kept crashing, but now I'm randomly getting the same problem listed at the start - the title bars spontaneously disappear. The problem can be fixed by going into Appearance and changing it from none to anything else (it takes a while to search for drivers each time), but this is only temporary - eventually it just disappears again. This happens to me occasionally while quickly using Compiz's expo and scale features. Ok guys this is pretty strange what i found out, i had about the same problem but disableling extra effects fixed it for 50%, what i also found out is that if u have extra effects on that Wine programs go crazy when i tried to start Guild Wars with extra effect then u cant see it it runs on the background and you only hear music same with other wine applications some will dont even startup if i have extra effects on. Same pb for me, Ubuntu 7.10 i386 with Gnome and ATI Radeon 9250. So there seem to be at least two problems here: 1) People who never get window decorations (titlebars) 2) People who normally have titlebars, but they disappear after some trigger. (1) Is probably caused when a required feature is not supported by the driver/card/Xorg.conf combination. For example, (some) nvidia users require AddARGBGLXVisuals true in their xorg.conf in order to get the enable the alpha channel in OpenGL visuals - required for gtk-window- decorator (the Restricted Manager automatically adds this option, but I guess this could be biting upgraders or people manually installing the nVidia drivers). (2) Would be caused by gtk-window-decorator crashing. Just want to note I get this bug too. Geforce Go 6200 running nVidia driver, and the compiz fusion that came out of the box with Gutsy Gibbon. the reason why i asked is that i installed the driver using the new restricted driver manager, and i do not want to start messing with the insides of this installation because its just not worth the time. i will however use compiz if there is no set up time from scratch and if i can help to make that for everyone else then i would be willing to make the effort then. but as of now the latest driver was not installed and i can't help anyone unless the driver is updated in the repos. in my opinion this bug is a write off for nvidia cards until that time because yes it does fix the symptoms but not the problem. if there is anything that i can do to help please let me know On 30/10/2007, macobas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: @Andrew Manson The instructions included in the link not only show you how to ensure you have the latest driver. Same problem. AMD64, running 7.10 with an Nvidia card. When I select NONE visual effect, title bars come back. If I go back to Normal or Extra, they disappear again. ok, sounds like its working alright for nvidia but it aint working for my ati card. i've applied all of the fixes that have been listed so far and i still don't have any progress on getting teh bars to come back. I'm running Kubuntu on a dell 1501 with a ATI card ( drivers installed using restricted manager ), the output for it on lspci is 00:01.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 PCI Bridge. [Output from compiz --replace is :] Checking for Xgl: present. Checking for nVidia: not present. Checking for Xgl: present. Enabling Xgl with fglrx ATi drivers... From Macobas' suggestion, I tried adding these to the display driver section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf: Option AllowGLXWithComposite true Option RenderAccel true Option AddARGBGLXVisuals True Then I restarted X (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE) and it seems to work. I can confirm this happens not only in the beta and RC, but also in the FINAL 7.10 Gutsy version of Ubuntu. In my case it happens when doing Alt+Tab several times, similarly to Dave's case. I just wanted to add how I fixed this...it may not work for everyone, but this is kind of how my problem cropped up and then how I fixed it. 1. I installed the Advanced Compiz Desktop Effects, because I didn't have multiple desktops and wasn't sure how to get them back otherwise. 2. After that, my titlebars disappeared. After trying the things above, nothing worked. Then I did this: 1. Uninstalled Compiz Advanced Desktop Effects, which didn't do much of anything I don't think. 2. System Preferences Appearance Preferences Visual Effects. 3. I switched from EXTRA to NONE and my titlebars came back. 4. Then I tried Normal and they were still there. My desktops appeared too. 5. I then re-installed Advanced Desktop Effects and everything is working fine. Ah YES! thank you Mr Kulyk! apparently, it wasn't installed. so after installing it via the terminal sudo apt-get install compiz-gnome I now have fancy windows, with the titlebars. although, I would have thought when upgrading from feisty to the beta gibbon, that it would have installed it then.
