I'm seeing the same thing here (Jaunty Alpha openoffice.org-impress 1:3.0.1-7ubuntu1) I'm running Gnome (apparently with the Mist theme) I think what's happening here is that when you click 'Open an existing presentation' it goes down the list of presentations it has seen and tries to do something with them; even if you turn preview off - so I'm not entirely sure what it's doing. This includes if the document was a URL and hence half way around the world on a slow website - and it blocks while doing it with no feedback until it completes. (I can see the IP of the host open in time wait after it finished and I haven't been to it in months). Frankly I'm tempted to think that going off to a website on something like this is actually dangerous; your only trying to open an existing office document - you don't expect for it to start opening network connections. The first time I opened OOo presentation today it also hung for a good 10+ seconds selecting the 'from templates' option on there - so again I'm thinking it's trying to cache something (it's now doing it in a few secs). Oh I forgot to mention now with gvfs fuse it doesn't not try to reconnect to sites if they are no longer mapped in Gnome already. Dave, Does moving/removing your ~/.openoffice.org* directory resolve the problem? This may resolve the problem particularly if it was due to OOo trying to go to some website as gnome-vfs support is now disabled in OOo and it now only uses the local filesystem (and gvfs fuse which appears to OOo as a local filesystem) to access files. Yes removing .openoff* does cure the 'open exisiting files' of course - if there is no way for remote stuff to get back in there then I guess it would be OK - although I guess there are loads of people who are still going to get this on upgrades. I guess it might still happen on documents that were accessed from network shares - I'm not sure it's a good idea for OOo to be opening a list of files in a blocking manner that might be on a removed device or a down NFS server. The 'from template' isn't too bad - but still it takes a couple of seconds on first startup and feels quite sluggish - but then speeds up. I doubt there is any easy way for OOo to determine the files it is trying to access were on a down NFS server, if the path doesn't exist at all it probably will just ignore the file, it the NFS is mounted and is really slow or temporarily dead then yea it would probably be slow but then that is a problem with the users network more than with OOo. Which is why I don't think OOo should even try to access the files in the 'open existing files' list when you open the dialog other than to list them because there is no way it can no if they would cause a problem - unless it either did it in another thread and hence didn't hang the UI or only accessed them when you explicitly told it to open it (in which case it seems fair enough for it to hang). I changed the GTK theme from Use my KDE style in GTK applications to Qt and the problem stopped. The funny thing is that I switched the GTK theme bacl to what it was (to see if that was causing the problem) and I couldn't reproduce the bug anymore. Very weird. Maybe I changed something else in the meantime and that solved the problem... I don't know. The good thing is that this doesn't seem to be a real bug so it can probably be marked as invalid. This looks like a duplicate of bug 131526. What GTK theme are you using? (Should be in System Preferences Appearance or gnome-appearance-properties). The current best workaround seems to be using another Gnome theme, e.g. Human. It may also help to purge the openoffice.org packages and reinstall them.
