So first off, ArchLinux has recommended that same behavior since 2013, particular towards Firefox: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?title=Openbox=251002#Windows_load_behind_the_active_window This was added to the Lubuntu default configuration in 2016: https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-default-settings/commit/?id=2f54149674cf11b0455802e513a1738649714670 It sounds like it was done specifically to resolve an issue with pcmanfm opening terminals and not focusing the terminals despite having focusNew set to yes. This might still an issue in pcmanfm, I don't know. Luckily, for Lubuntu, we use pcmanfm-qt. Tested in 24.04. Issue is the same as before: the new GUI setting has no effect on new windows taking focus, just like before. E.g. hit F4 from pcmanfm and the terminal will steal focus. (I noticed that starting pcmanfm from a terminal focuses pcmanfm no matter what state the rc.xml is in. Not sure if this is different from before.) We're no longer using LXDE but LXQt (so pcmanfm-qt not pcmanfm) and though we are still using Openbox we are using a different GUI tool (obconf-qt). Thanks -- regardless of the usefulness of the setting, the bigger issue is that if you go to Preferences -> Openbox Configuration Manager -> Windows and uncheck "Focus new windows when they appear" it has no effect, because of this section. I just tested the behavior when that section is removed, and as the ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml file implies, hitting F4 in pcmanfm will open a terminal without changing focus to it, despite focusNew being set to "Yes", so I understand the motivation there. But maybe this is a bug in openbox or pcmanfm that could be addressed? Or, if that is the only known reason for using the section, perhaps it could be narrowed to lxterminal.
