[Bug 179504] Re: [Hardy 8.04 alpha-2 users groups] Can't login as root because administrative user can't change root's initial random password.

2008-01-04 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I agree with you that a bug can be a lot of things, but at this point,
since this behavior is expected to work this way ( I mean that ubuntu
isn't designed to work with root account, I can't say if it's possible
to make it work with root by I believe that it is ), if you just open a
bug report, you'll probably don't get the attention you want for this
problem you try to work on. That's why I suggest you to speaks with
ubuntu developpers. Perhaps that enabling root account is even possible
and that they know how or else at least you will speak to people who are
responsible of these kinds of things. From now on, root account cannot
be easily activated because of security concerns. Changing that can be
pretty more dramatic than let the things as it is here. Perhaps that you
can help to create a better compromise around this problem, you just
need to speak to the right people and work with the community.

[Bug 179504] Re: [Hardy 8.04 alpha-2 users groups] Can't login as root because administrative user can't change root's initial random password.

2008-01-04 Thread The Devil Is A Squirrel
It seems I have another bug on my system (Hardy is not asking for root
password by trying to run root-tasks on GUI):
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=651999

That's why my ranting is inapropriate and I apologize.

Nevertheless I would like to add, if this behavior is working as
expected, then a proper error/info message and disabling the Allow
local system administrator login option in the security section would
be very helpful and less confusing, right?

2008-01-04 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I also think that this can be considered as a bug. Can you open a bug
report about the existence of the Allow local system administrator
login and the fact that it doesn't work? I continue to think that we
should speak to ubuntu developers about this to know what's the right
solution between these two :

1. This option should not exist.
2. This option should really enable root login.

If you open the bug, I can speak with ubuntu developers to get their
opinion. Thanks for your contribution.

So, why can I under Setup Login ScreenSecurity activate the entry
Allow local system administrator login? Either this entry is wrong and
a proper error message would be helpful or it is indeed a bug.

IMHO it is a bug. It's good root is deactivated by default, but I would
like to decide whether I stick with that or not. Ie. I don't like it
because it's not fully implemented in the desktop...I even can't unmount
a volume...

2008-01-03 Thread Saïvann Carignan
The Devil Is A Squirrel : I believe that this should be discussed with
developers because it's not a bug meaning that the computer crash,
etc. According to dAniel hAhler, this behavior from ubuntu is expected
and I also think that it is expected to work that way for security
reasons. I believe that you can unlock root account and use it through
ubuntu but it's not designed to work that way for the lamda user who
uses graphical tools to configure the computer because of security
concerns.

Perhaps you can speak about this idea on devel mailing lists or in
#ubuntu-devel

2008-01-03 Thread The Devil Is A Squirrel
Well, first, a bug is more than just a crash.

Uhm, how can this behavior work as expected? It's one thing that by
default root-login is deactivated but another thing if you just can't
activate root-login although you activate the options provided by the
system...

2007-12-31 Thread dAniel hAhler
The root password is not random, but the root login is disabled. So even
if you change it using sudo passwd, you cannot login with it.

Please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more
information.

Thank you.

2007-12-30 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Thanks for your bug report.

I suggest that you test that behavior on actual Gutsy stable release
because I think that this is normal since Linux ubuntu uses sudo and not
root account. From what I know, the root account doesn't have any
password in ubuntu, this has the effect ( in any Linux system ) to
disable the account.

Tested in Feisty, Gutsy and Hardy :

GDM will never authorize you to connect as the root user, you'll get
this message System administrator is not allowed to login from this
screen. If you get another error message, can you copy it there? Can
you also try to create a new user account and look if you can change the
password of that account and then login successfully into that account?

Thanks for your contribution.
