[Bug 179902] Re: Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr
We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

You should have done 'backtrace full' instead of 'cont': 0xb7f5d410 in __kernel_vsyscall () (gdb) cont Continuing. Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. Please make sure you're using a correct xorg.conf for all the backtraces and log files you supply. Some additional info: I just tried to install dbg versions and follow the debug wiki page... well i did not manage to reproduce the same problem (i had to use one step newer ati driver in lenny repositories because of acessibility the debug versions), however i managed to get the xserver frozen (i am not sure if it is the same problem, whether the dbg versions with + Option "NoTrapSignals" "true" does not change the behavior in that way). Re: [Bug 179902] Re: Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr
Hello. I updated the ati driver to version from Debian sid - 1:6.9.0-1 and it works well already for several days (1200x1600 + 1400x1050 with 16bit depth). Considering the slowness, it was slightly better, but not same as the overall system performance before ubuntu 7.10. I solved the slowness temporary so, that I upgraded the cpu Pentium Mobile from 1,4 GHz Banias to 2,1GHz Dothan ... so for some time. The Xorg.0.log is now probably useless, however i the latest version just for information (and part of configuration file). martin ** Attachment added: "part_of_xorg.conf" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/16450476/part_of_xorg.conf ** Attachment added: "Xorg.0.log" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/16450477/Xorg.0.log -- Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 179902] Re: Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr
Hello again. i have made some additional research across various forums. There is many problems with older ati cards unsuported by the binary drivers. In addition there is another problem i forgot in the beginning of the thread to mention. It may hang toghether with the original problem due some memory management problems. I attach to the mail a photography, so i hope it pass to the system. A text description: after some time of higher load of the system it becomes permanently slower (i bet it does the graphics subsystem, however it may be some laptop/chipset cooling feature). Mostly after some time of this slower mode (i do not remember it happened without it) when the system responds badly (but no applications shows higher CPU usage) there blanks the primary screen (reffered as LVDS) to black and on the secondary screen starts running stripes across the image (from bottom upwards, in range of seconds). Seems like some memory disorder. This is fixed by jumping to text console ALT+CTRL+Fx and back to graphical mode. After some time it does again. I have found in one thread advise (similar but another issue) to use packages from debian sid, there may be some changes made, but i am not friend with any packaging system or combination various distributions... (debian experimental: 1:6.9.1-2 debian sid: 1:6.9.0-1 vs ubuntu 8.04 hardy 1.6.8.0-1). However later i can try to upgrade to one of th newer versions. martin ** Attachment added: "p1240017.jpg" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/16292231/p1240017.jpg -- Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 179902] Re: Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr
I have some free time now so I installed clean instlation of KUbuntu 8.04 back to the laptop. It is in Kde 3.x version. I did not manage to get the crash again so far (running video few hours), however the the performance is significantly lower. I had few last weeks debian stable in the laptop and in simple clone mode (visually similar like base randr settings) there is visible difference. If i run just kaffeine (no other big applications) playing DVD and chech with TOP the cpu usage it shows similar numbers, however in the ubuntu (which uses newer version of xorg, ati drivers and the other parts of the chain) is overall performance still on 100 percents and sometimes dropping frames. With debian, where it is few versions back, there was still several percents of performance left (so the computer is responding while writing some e-mail and watching video at the same time). If i manage to get the crash again i will post the log, however when i was experiencing it with updated system from 7.10 i did not notice any error message in log after restart the Xserver. If someone could advise me how can I help to improve the performance i would appreciate it. I have just simple experience with developing. I would like to use the new versions, however without buying new hardware. Fallback to some distribution with XOrg <7.3 (or .2?) is the last option. martin -- Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 179902] Re: Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr
Hello. Yes, i was upgrading the distribution and then updating ( till end of 5th month of 2008) and it did on Hardy the same (possibly not major updates on Xorg or the ati driver). Unfortunately i did not have enough time to debug this more. First i needed to work every possible minute on the machine (so i did not play videos to avoid slowness and crashes) and in first longer free while I swapped to debian stable (old xorg plays dvd's in overlay without the performance problems). Because of that i unfortunately cannot provide the logs (however i was reading them - after restart the machine there was no signs about any problem). There was either more problems with the ati driver (various options combinations AGP mode eg.), but there was always some combination relatively stable, except here described problems. Whoever who has laptop of similar age (with same chipset and for all the graphical card - mobility radeon 9000) should test it in dual monitor mode and experience the same, if it is really bug or particular problem on my side. It would be useful if someone else could test this. I have some other work to do at current time. If i will have some time in short time range, i could try install it again. [Bug 179902] Re: Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr
Thanks for reporting this bug to help make Ubuntu better, unfortunately there's not enough information to troubleshoot it. You mention that this bug results in an Xorg crash; does this crash still occur on Hardy? If so, could you please collect a full backtrace (see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions). Please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, as this contains a wealth of necessary information for troubleshooting X problems (sometimes it also includes relevant error messages). ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- Xserver crashes/restarts ati+xv+xrandr https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
