[Bug 1877887] Re: [USB-Audio - Scarlett 2i2 USB, playback] fails after a while
Apologies, I went on vacation for a few days. I've had the same results no matter where I plug it in, but it seems to happen less frequently on my powered USB hub, and MUCH more frequently when connected to a plain USB 2.0 port (labeled for keyboard and mouse usage on the back of the mobo). It still happens when connected to the regular USB 3.0 ports, and when connected directly to a 2.0 header breakout cable. I am planning on getting a PCIE usb expansion card for unrelated reasons but I will give that a try when it gets here. The only other thing that I can think of that might be significant is that when running off the 3.0 hub, it seems to have a small chance of failing whenever a new pulseaudio client appears (like when launching a game for example) and does not seem to fail randomly like it does on the 2.0 ports. When connected to the 2.0 ports it will fail in the same way but at completely random times, usually within a few hours of startup and sometimes as short as a few minutes. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1877887 Title: [USB-Audio - Scarlett 2i2 USB, playback] fails after a while To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1877887/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1877887] Re: [USB-Audio - Scarlett 2i2 USB, playback] fails after a while
I booted into Ubuntu 18.04 with a 4.15 kernel and had similar issues. It has been running steady for several days now off the powered USB hub though so I'm pretty satisfied. It doesn't seem like that change is relevant to this issue, although seeing as this particular interface is somewhat common I am thinking starting to think that the issue lies elsewhere. Maybe it's possibly an issue with USB on my motherboard, as I've had some other weird issues like keyboard and mouse not working in the past unless plugged into a 2.0 header.

[Bug 1877887] Re: [USB-Audio - Scarlett 2i2 USB, playback] fails after a while
After some testing on older kernels I was indeed able to recreate these issues. The only thing I can think of is that somehow the hardware has partially degraded such that it causes some issues with however the drivers are implemented in linux but not in windows. I think it may have something to do with current protection, because when reconnecting it to the same port it does not power back on, but if I switch ports it does. Although, if I switch ports it still does not work even though it does power on. It also causes pulseaudio to lock up until I disconnect the device, which causes many other applications to hang when they try to play audio. I was able to get it working well enough by dedicating a powered USB hub to the audio interface, it has been a couple days with no issues, which is what leads me to believe it is something related to power. I'm not sure if this issue is fixable, or even worth dedicating resources to, but if this points to some deficiency in the kernel seeing as it *does* work fine in windows, I would be happy to provide any further diagnostics required to get a better idea of what's happening.

[Bug 1877887] Re: [USB-Audio - Scarlett 2i2 USB, playback] fails after a while
Unfortunately it seems to still be producing the same issue as before on the latest kernel. Is it possible for this to be hardware failure? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense as the issue persist even when reconnecting the device and it works fine with a reboot. I've also noticed that it most commonly occurs when something tries to start playing audio. I also had it holding solid for a couple days off my USB 3 hub but it would still produce the issue at a much lower frequency.

[Bug 1877887] Re: [USB-Audio - Scarlett 2i2 USB, playback] fails after a while
** Description changed: I am encountering some very bizarre and difficult to reliably replicate issues. I am using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB audio interface, and am having a number of issues that I did not have in older version of ubuntu (these issues started occuring sometime in 19.04-19.10, can't remember which). I am having three major issues. Number one is, if USB autosuspend is enabled, it will stop working completely until reboot after anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Reconnecting the device does not fix it and it seems to not power on at all, with dmesg reporting a "usb_set_interface failed -110" error. Sometimes this bug can be recreated by manually disconnecting and reconnecting the device, however I was unable to replicate it in this manner at the time of filing the bug. + + EDIT: Ignore the two more issue below, however I'm leaving them in the + post in case they end up being relevant. Another (presumably related) issue I am having is that if I reconnect the device and it doesn't fail, it outputs very crackly audio, as if the bitrate or sample rate were set incorrectly. This persists until a restart of pulseaudio. Previously, I had a similar bug where it would randomly start doing the crackly audio thing until reconnecting the device and in this case a restart of pulse did *not* fix the problem. I am unsure if this issue still happens as it was fairly rare. The third problem is that sometimes when performing a suspend/wake cycle, the interface will power cycle several times, in intervals of 15-30 seconds or so before staying on properly. As previously mentioned, these issues are fairly new and did not occur in older versions of ubuntu. I have confirmed that the audio interface works fine under windows. [Bug 1877887] Re: [USB-Audio - Scarlett 2i2 USB, playback] fails after a while
Thank you for your bug report, please report one ticket by issue since it's not really working to try to handle different problems in one tickets, especially when the issues could be owner by different teams or projects. Reassigning to the kernel, the first issue with usb suspend sounds like it's a kernel problem. ** Package changed: alsa-driver (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1877887 Title: [USB-Audio - Scarlett 2i2 USB, playback] fails after a while To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1877887/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1877887] Re: [USB-Audio - Scarlett 2i2 USB, playback] fails after a while
Does using the snd_hda_intel.power_save=0 kernel option makes a difference to the sound cracking issue? (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters). Also by USB suspend do you mean btusb.enable_autosuspend=y/n ? If so the device should probably be added to https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/drivers/bluetooth/btusb.c -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1877887 Title: [USB-Audio - Scarlett 2i2 USB, playback] fails after a while To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1877887/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
