Re: [Bug 1919248] Re: (nvidia) ubuntu-drivers - no autoinstall, no luck.

2021-03-16 Thread neo
thanks,

i have re-installed the Operating-system without the safe-graphics
option, and from there it was easily possible to switch from nouveau to
the proprietary driver via "additional drivers" - and dual-monitor setup
worked out-of-the-box. it seems that the safe-graphics option did
complicate the setup a little bit, don't know why;
still wondering why the autoinstall option became obsolete, but as long
the additional drivers section is functioning, it is not so important.

Thank you, i installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS in safegraphics mode because i
had problems with the graphics card on Debian , Devuan, not Ubuntu, but
tried this safegraphics nevertheless. From there, i could not get it to
run properly.

No errors, i did install DKMS with the resulting procedure, but after
reboot, again no luck.

pplease see attached files

ah, and yes, i did select yesterday via the "additional drivers" section
the nvidia-driver-450, clicked "apply" and it seemed to download alot of
packages (from the time it took to finish the process) but to no avail;
afterwards i changed from there again to metapackage for
nvidia-driver-460 (which again resulted in a longer download/install)
but this would no solve it.

[Bug 1919248] Re: (nvidia) ubuntu-drivers - no autoinstall, no luck.

2021-03-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Interestingly it appears there is no kernel driver loaded for the Nvidia
card. So either something has forced it into safe graphics mode (doesn't
look like it) or the Nvidia driver is not working.

Please try:

  sudo apt install --reinstall nvidia-driver-460 nvidia-dkms-460

Any errors? If not then please reboot and then run:

  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting file here.

Re: [Bug 1919248] Re: (nvidia) ubuntu-drivers - no autoinstall, no luck.

2021-03-16 Thread neo
Hello,

"sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall" gave a warning to use "sudo
ubuntu-drivers install" instead because it is obsolete.

i tried with sudo ubuntu-drivers list and sudo ubuntu-drivers devices
and then to install sudo apt install nvidia-driver-460 but nothing got
installed.

in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d you would find

10-amdgpu.conf  10-quirks.conf  40-libinput.conf
10-nvidia.conf  10-radeon.conf  70-wacom.conf

please see attached file, thanks.

[Bug 1919248] Re: (nvidia) ubuntu-drivers - no autoinstall, no luck.

2021-03-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report.

There only appears to be one GPU installed so can we assume you would
like to run two monitors off the same graphics card?

It looks like one of the problems might be a bad Xorg config file is in
use (the log says it's been forced to make some choices due to a config
file). Maybe such a file was created by "sudo ubuntu-drivers
autoinstall"? What files do you have in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d ?

Please also run this command:

  lspci -kv > lspcikv.txt

and attach the resulting text file here so that we can confirm the
kernel driver in use.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => nvidia-graphics-drivers-460
(Ubuntu)

** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-460 (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Incomplete
