I'm not using Ubuntu right now. It really was a strange problem and I didn't get to discover what was causing it. I do remember, however, that a new install didn't have the problem. Confirm. Same behaviour with Ubuntu LTS 8.04. Keyboard starts with US- Layout after Reboot. One has to change manually to "de_DE". Maybe putting "setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout de -variant basic" into "rc.local" could be a workaround, bit I didn't test it yet. I don't think it is fixed. Since the LTS upgrade gnome lost the ability to store the correct keyboard settings although they look ok in the Keyboard Preferences window. Everytime I log in I have to go to keyboard preferences and click on Keyboard model, change the model from Generic 105-key to another one and then back to Generic 105-key (my setting). This is not a serious bug but it is very annoying having to change the keyboard settings every time after logging in... I'll be happy to provide more information.
