Closing the bug since it sounds like the issue has gone away, and in any case it still lacks the information requested to debug it. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- Ubuntu won't login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252767 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 252767] Re: Ubuntu won't login
The files contain no trace of a crash, and so they aren't much use. The crash should leave a trace at the end of one of the log files. Without it, there is absolutely nothing we can do, which is why I closed the report. Also, we need a full backtrace really so that the bug can be sent upstream. A full backtrace can be obtained by following the steps at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing -- Ubuntu won't login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252767 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 252767] Re: Ubuntu won't login
From what I've seen, there is a large number of people with this bug. I've looked for help on ubuntuforums extensively, and from what I've seen this problem has existed for long time, close to half a year I'd say, and has still not been resolved. There are many other users on ubuntuforums with this problem desperately looking for a solution. To tell you the truth, I just started trying to use Linux and heard that Ubuntu was it's best version from many places. So I tried it out, and I'm left looking for a solution to this problem and find that almost nothing is being done to solve it. This experience definitely turned me off to Linux, and I expect it has, and will continue to do the same to many others with an otherwise perfectly good computer. And since it's a problem with compatibility with hardware, I wouldn't be suprised if this same problem extends to other computers than just those using ATI Radeons in the future. Now, I realize that I can try other versions of Linux, which in all likelihood I will. But it is still very disconcerting that I am unable to use one of the finest versions because of what I would think is a very simple problem. It's not very hard to imagine why Windows is still so popular, even with all of its problems, when errors like this go unsolved for months at a time on Ubuntu. So, please, if you have been working diligently to solve this problem, respond to this and let me know that I don't know what I'm talking about and that it has proved a lot more difficult to solve than previously expected. But if this has been sitting around as an unsolved bug, which screws over a large number of people just because they have a good computer with good parts that just happens to not be compatible, then I suggest the people who have the programming experience and drive to make Ubuntu such a great OS do something about this problem immediately. -- Ubuntu won't login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252767 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 252767] Re: Ubuntu won't login
Dan L - We can't fix problems unless people report them on Launchpad and provide enough information to diagnose the problem. Talking about it on the forums doesn't help at all. There doesn't seem to be a large number of users experiencing this problem, as they haven't reported the problem in the correct place. There could be many different causes for the symptoms you describe. Please bear in mind that just because you experience a symptom similar to somebody else, it doesn't mean you are experiencing the same bug. So far, this bug report doesn't contain enough useful information to fix the problem. As it sounds like Xorg is crashing, we really need a backtrace. A good starting point is to recreate the problem, and then attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old to this bug report. Hopefully, this will give some idea of what might be happening. [Bug 252767] Re: Ubuntu won't login
It looked as though kat had provided the necessary information, but it sounds as though it wasn't useful. I'm a VERY new user, I just installed my first version of ubuntu (I believe the 8.04 version) and this started happening (user lLogin to password to black screen for a couple seconds and back to login with no message of incorrect user or password, and I have tried reinstalling and recorded password and username). So, as such, I have no experience in creating such logs or any of that type of thing. If you could explain the process to me, or reference the needed URL to find the necessary skills to get you this information, I would be more than happy. I will be gone for most of the weekend, so I will try to get a response back to you with the information by Sunday if I'm back in time to work on this. You are correct that this may be a coincidence with other users experiencing a similar problem, but as I have looked through the forums, I have noticed numerous cases of this login, black screen, back to login problem, with the common theme that in EVERY occurence I have seen they have an ATI RADEON Xpress 200 integrated video card. So I'm wondering if a driver is not enabled correctly or some similar problem. In any case, if you can point me in the right direction, I will try very hard to get some useful information from my system back to you, as I am excited to use this OS if possible. Thanks for getting back to me so promptly. -- Ubuntu won't login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252767 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 252767] Re: Ubuntu won't login
You may need to close the bug, it would take a complete fresh install to gather the information you requested because I had to install a different video card to get past the issue. Then I did a fresh install of ubuntu and gave the system to my son who lives 5 hours away. I would need to get the system back and start over to recreate the issue. I do have another identical (less the new video car) system I could experiment with but I'll have to buy memory for it I can start. I really don't see that you can help ME right now, but just tonight on the Ubuntu forums, someone else posted the EXACT same issue on their freshly installed system. Perhaps I could direct them to this bug report and some more information would be contributed from that user. Thanks - I understand and I don't expect you fix something without information. [Bug 252767] Re: Ubuntu won't login
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This sounds like Xorg crashing when you log in. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log files (/var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after a failed log-in attempt) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the Attachment: box below. Note that /var/log/Xorg.0.log is the log file for the current session and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old is the log file for the previous session. You might need to use the 'Failsafe GNOME' session to log in. If you can try to log in normally first (so this causes Xorg to crash) and then successfully log in afterwards using the failsafe session, /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old will contain a backtrace.
