[Bug 291409] Re: nvidia driver install fails to proceed

2009-11-11 Thread gray
Hi Kamus

Sorry but I am running Ubuntu on a different machine, which does not
have nvidia (I bought an intel-based laptop with ubuntu pre-installed).

Would somebody else be able to comment on this matter, as I cannot.

Thanks

Since this report have a long time without activity, could you check (if is
possible) in latest
Ubuntu Karmic version if this issue is still happening? Thanks in advance.

2008-12-07 Thread Kom-Si
Dunno... I checked the procedure I described to you several times. After
uninstalling the app (jockey) and re-installing it again everything worked
like charm.

Whenever I tried to use jockey head-on after installing the OS (Ubuntu) I
inadvertently reproduced the same buggy behavior: the app pretends it starts
downloading smth and then hangs...

The latter behavior is reproduced regardless of Ubuntu 8.10 type (32 or 64
bytes), and regardless of updates downloaded and installed after the OS
installation. I mean updates or no updates jockey on my machine misbehaved
ALWAYS, unless I ditched it without even trying and re-installed again...

Status in jockey source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
I have just installed Intrepid 8.10 (Pentium 4 box with an nvidia FX5500
vid card) - the final release as on 30 Oct, done all the updates and
 rebooted.

I attempt to install the nvidia driver by clicking on
 System/Administration/Hardware Drivers.
The correct driver (173) is located and I click enable.
I type in password, the window indicating progress pops up and then
disappears, without doing anything further - I check the router and there is
no internet access or anything to indicate an installation.

 What should happen:

When choosing to enable the driver, the progress window should appear and
the download of the driver should procee, while showing the progress of the
download and installation in the progress bar. Upon completion, the progress
window should close leaving the main hardware driver window open with an
indication that the pc should be rebooted to use the new driver.

 Thanks

This bug is happening for me only when the restricted repository is not
activated, is it the case on your computer?

2008-12-07 Thread Kom-Si
this bug in essence is the inability to activate restricted drivers using
jockey GUI app. the answer is yes, this is the case.

[Bug 291409] Re: nvidia driver install fails to proceed

2008-12-06 Thread Olivier Le Thanh Duong
I just had the same problem after upgrading to Intrepid Ibex, it was
caused by not having the restricted repository in my sources.list and
thus the necessary package not being installable. Adding the said
repository corrected the problem.

In any case jockey should not fail silently if it cannot install a
package (there was no error message, neither graphical or in the
console). Seems like a major issue since the nv driver doesn't works on
my computer.

Re: [Bug 291409] Re: nvidia driver install fails to proceed

2008-12-06 Thread Kom-Si
Oliver,

Actually the jockey nVidia installer that is in the main repository now has
already been fixed, and you can get it from there. It works, I checked a
couple of times.

Problem is, when you've just installed Ubuntu 8.10 it already contains a
buggy jockey installer. So my workaround is as follows:

- install Ubuntu 8.10.
- go to Applications -- Add/Remove and uninstall (uncheck) the Hardware
Drivers component.
- reboot and install it again.

[Bug 291409] Re: nvidia driver install fails to proceed

2008-11-04 Thread weboide
If you manage to reproduce the problem again, please follow these steps
so that we can see what goes wrong:

1) close Jockey and type:
sudo killall jockey-backend
sudo /usr/share/jockey/jockey-backend --debug

(keep it running in the background)

2) launch jockey-gtk (e.g. from another terminal) and try to install the
driver so as to reproduce the problem.

3) close jockey-gtk and terminate the jockey-backend process

4) Copy the output into a new text file and post it as an attachment to
this bug report. (or try looking in /tmp)
