[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2010-03-11 Thread mf
ok i'm back, I did a clean install and i was able to reboot for a while,
then i installed the 250Mb of updatesand it stopped. I'm back at square
one.

I looked at the suspected modem issues, modem-manager in particular and
eventually killed the process off entirely and renamed the binary to
stop it from relaunching.

Made sure that modem-manager was not running and tried a reboot.

this time i get no modem-manager exceptions but i'm left with the HAL
message mentioned above and a flashing cursor.

Pretty sure this is not modem related guys.

Aside from the updates that installed i also installed the following
software

sudo apt-get install nmap iptraf gparted simple-ccsm compizconfig-
settings-manager gtkpod vlc ffmpeg xubuntu-restricted-extras hipo
rhythmbox wavemon powertop mplayer mplayer-skins iftop htop smc smc-
music frozen-bubble joe sshfs gthumb cairo-dock opera aircrack-ng
mozilla-thunderbird startupmanager deluge

any clues in there or can i provide any debug info?

2010-03-10 Thread mf
OK i have had this problem since i first installed 9.10 in November
2009. I have since had about 6 or 7 kernel updates and the problem has
persisted.,

Currently i have 2.6.32-16-386 #24-Ubuntu SMP Sat Mar 6 15:33:03 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux

Reboot, shutdown, suspend and hibernate all fail, every time.

I see this if i issue a shutdown from maintenance mode

init: rsyslog-kmsg main process (996) Killed by TERM signal
init: hal main process (1034) terminated with status 1
init: avahi-daemon main process (1042)n terminated with status 255
*stopping TiMidity++ Alsa midi emulation...
modemmanager: caught signal 15, shutting down...
init: disconnecting from system bus...
_

And then i just get a blinking cursor top left until i i power if off
with the button - my hard drive makes a nasty clicking noise when i do
this so i'm not happy with that.

This really is a serious problem and widespread too.

Any idea's anyone before i smash this netbook to pieces in a frustrated
rage or it melts and catches fire in my bag as it cooks until the
battery runs out :)

Uninstall your modem and see if the problem goes away. Linux is not a modem
or fax friendly OS unless it is an ancient external modem/fax connected via
serial port.

2010-03-10 Thread mf
HI Bernhard, It's not practical for me to re-install because i am
currently traveling around Mexico with only limited internet access.

It worked fine on 9.04, i actually had very few problems on 9.04. Since
upgrading to 9.10 it's been one thing after another but this is the
single most debilitating bug. I can live with the rest.

I have a usb stick with ubuntu on it, i'll try and boot to the live
image and see how it behaves on that.

Thanks
Matt

2010-03-10 Thread mf
yes sorry i should have said that i have done a clean install in the
past. This build is from a clean install. I have been backwards and
forwards from 9.04 to 9.10 a few times 4 months trying to fix various
and numerous anoyances and bugs.

I just booted up into a live image which has 2.6.31-14 kernel. It
reboots no problem so that good. I still have that kernel on the system
so i booted up into that from grub but have the same reboot issue.

So it's to do with a package in my system that is not in the live
distro?

I suspect that this might be to do with HAL not shutting down properly
but not sure how to move forward on that.

Also, on each boot i get a message on the splash screen saying that one
or more mounts in fstab could not be mounted, usually my /home, it then
just boots up anyway and is fine. I have fsck'd /home and it's fine.

I dont think that is related but maybe worth mentioning.

The live CD/USB won't have any modem support. Do you have modem/fax support
installed on your machine? If so, remove _all_ of it.

Well,

According to your post, you died some time after modem devices were being
killed off. Were you able to use your 3G modem from the live CD/USB stick to
surf the Web and read email? If not, then I would suspect the problem lies in
either the drivers or your configuration for 3G.

Re: [Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2010-03-10 Thread seasoned_geek
Odds are it was switched on during your installation and various things got
installed to support it. Even if the device is disabled, there is a
possibility it would still be found during installation and those network
things would get installed.

My guess is your hang on shutdown is being caused because you don't have your
built in 3G configured correctly (if that is even possible) and the network
shutdown is waiting for a response it never gets.

You need to close this bug.

Once you spend a lot of time in the networking forums looking for how to
correctly configure your built in 3G modem, you will either solve your problem
or you will find an existing bug report to attach your information to.

Subject: [Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

HI Bernhard, It's not practical for me to re-install because i am
currently traveling around Mexico with only limited internet access.

It worked fine on 9.04, i actually had very few problems on 9.04. Since
upgrading to 9.10 it's been one thing after another but this is the
single most debilitating bug. I can live with the rest.

I have a usb stick with ubuntu on it, i'll try and boot to the live
image and see how it behaves on that.

Thanks
Matt

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2010-02-13 Thread Marcin Cinik
The problem still occurs, but there is workaround that works for me:
#shutdown
sudo initctl start rc RUNLEVEL=0

#reboot
sudo initctl start rc RUNLEVEL=6

It is not clear to me, that upstart rc task is stopped after the system
was run. All processes started by rc are run so rc should alsrc task
looks only as a kind of kick-starter and nothing more.

thinkpad ~$ sudo initctl status rc
rc stop/waiting

upstart in newest Ubuntu 9.10 is not quite stable. It requires more
efforts in my opinion, but I may be wrong certainly. Maybe the problem
stays somewhere else.

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2009-08-30 Thread Nicholas Roberts
I thought everything had been resolved for me having updated to
2.6.31-8. However... if I delete a couple of files using Nautilus and
then go for a system shutdown I get the warning message that Nautilus is
still deleting files (even though it actually finished). Same goes for
copying files... a shutdown will report Nautilus is still busy copying.
Forcing a shutdown leads to the same 'superblock inconsistency' issue on
reboot and the need for an fsck.

The superblock issue is that it has found a timestamp one hour (exactly)
in the future... strange one this. Anyway, none of this happened prior
to this bug so I am concluding that there is...

(a) either an outstanding issue directly related to this bug or

(b) that the original bug caused an inconsistency in my filesystem
and/or configuration causing the Nautilus errors and superblock
inconsistencies.

I can confirm the issue with Nautilus trashing files when trying to
shutdown/reboot but I can click Shutdown anyway and it shuts down
fine. Not sure if these two things (Nautilus trashing message and
shutdown problems) are really related.

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2009-08-30 Thread Nicholas Roberts
Hi Bernhard

I have just been reading a related issue being discussed on the forums,
see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1252690

The bug could be unrelated and just coincidental to the 'hanging'
problem that has now been addressed. However, as you are experiencing
the same issues as me, please could you try running
System--Administration--Time Date. My settings for timezone are
corrupted and cannot be reset, although looking at/setting them from the
command line appears fine.

Please let me know if you are also experiencing the timezone corruption
issue.

Many thanks
Nick

My apologies... I was typing my response and did not see mac_v's message
until after I had sent it.

Bernhard - I would still appreciate your letting me know about the
timezone issue. If your system is ok then I can assume I have a separate
issue with timezone corruption, but if you get the same thing then maybe
this is all related to the fix that mac_v mentions for the Nautilus bug.

Thanks again,
Nick

Re: [Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2009-08-28 Thread Peter W Bowey
If you have successfully installed the new kernel (2.6.31-8.28), then you
will have success after you have found a non-destructive way to reboot or
power down your system New kernel replacement and use only occurs after a
reboot cycle. The original (older kernel = 2.6.31-7) remains in-place until
the system is correctly shut down. If you are offered a choice of kernels at
boot then choose the latest = 2.6.31-8.28!

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2009-08-28 Thread Jonathan Lumb
This issue was fixed for me when I installed the 2.6.31-8 Kernel. You
can install most necessary packages with apt-get:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.31-8
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.31-8-generic
sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.31-8-generic

You can then install the linux-libc-dev package using wget:

wget wget
https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/2.6.31-8.28/+build/1192025/+files
/linux-libc-dev_2.6.31-8.28_i386.deb

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Do a reboot (this is the last time you should have to hit the power
button to reboot) and select the 2.6.31-8 kernel from the GRUB Boot
menu. Once you have booted up, try a shutdown or restart and you should
find that the problem has gone!

I too am affected by the GRUB bug (bug 420077) mentioned above... let's
hope they squash that one soon too!

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2009-08-28 Thread supernaicol
For the record and your system integrity:

you don't have to push the power button to shut down your pc, even if
you're suffering from this bug or a similar one: the alt+sysrq+button
combos remain valid!

So, if you have to reboot your machine, all you have to do is, while
holding alt + sysrq, press: REISUB. It will stop then kill brutally any
process still running, but at least (and this is very important) it will
sync and safely unmount all the filesystems!

If you have to power off, the combination is REISUO.

Bye

@supernaicol: would be nice, but does not work on my laptop, maybe it's
my keyboard layout. In any case, I would definitely like to have final
control over the power source of my computer. Or did you ever hear the
words Dave Bowman and REISUB in one sentence?

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31rc7

2009-08-27 Thread Nicholas Roberts
As #16 says I receive a prompt to run fsck reporting that there was an
unexpected inconsistency as the last superblock write was (exactly) one
hour in the future. Not sure if it is relevant but I wondered if there
was an inconsistency between how Karmic was tracking time and I ran
System--Administration--Time and Date (i.e. time-admin) to find that
the time zone etc. is all corrupt and cannot be set (just reports
'unconfigured'). Setting timezone etc. from the command line is fine and
it reports the correct time.

Another issue that I found is that if I try to log out I am warned that
Nautilus is still copying/deleting files, whereas in fact it should have
finished those activities as the files in question had been
moved/deleted hours before. Just wondered if those outstanding actions
(which I am warned about every time I try to log out now) are causing
the hang on shutdown and then resulting in the 'unclean' filesystem flag
being set.

I can also confirm the bugs described her.

Here is also a question to the experts: boot process only takes me up to

Will I at this point at all be able to fetch system updates (that perhaps fix
the bug) via internet?
Or will I need to do a complete reinstall of karmic from CD?

Thanks in advance for your support!

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2009-08-27 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Guys,

I'm actually going to reassign this to the linux (Ubuntu) kernel
package rather than against linux-meta. I'm also tagging this
regression-potential to make sure it gets on everyone's radar.

I will note that we saw quite a few regressions such as this with the
2.6.31-7 Ubuntu kernel. We're currently working on ripping out some of
the KSM patches that went in which we believe might be the culprit and
indeed what @Hernando Torque has likely narrowed down by disabling
CONFIG_KSM . Please continue to track and test any kernel updates that
get pushed and let us know your results. Thanks!

Same here, Karmic stops shuting down at Checking unattended-upgrades *asking
all remaining tasks to terminate. Latest updates from Today with the 31-7
Kernel.
My Gateway 5056b refuses to restart or to shut down from the begining (I
started from Alfa3).
From 31-7 after hard reset, fsck on karmic partition always reporting about
errors (something about future time stamps in partition) . Errors disappearing

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown

2009-08-26 Thread Yotam Benshalom
For me the problem is similar but more severe. System will not boot back
up, no matter how and how much I reboot, leaving me with a flashing
cursor. I must use older kernel to get a working system.

Same problem here and it forces a hard shutdown because I cannot type
into the CTRL-ALT-F1 console (I see the console with terminating
message, but I cannot type into it.

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown

2009-08-26 Thread Ken Rogers Jr.
I also have a shutdown/restart issue plus not being able to boot past
the winbind service and a FAIL on networking

here is the error I get for shutdown:

* Shutting down ALSA...[OK]
Checking for running unattended-upgrades: /etc/rc0.d/S10unattended-upgrades:
35: python: Permission denied
* Asking all remaining processes to terminate...
init: rc main process (2623) stopped by STOP signal
acpid: exiting

init: rc main process (2623) continued by CONT signal

That is where it hangs. Whether I restart or shutdown. I have to use the
power button to kill it.

On boot, I did get information feedback, but after this last restart...I
get nothing, the computer just hangs about 85% into the ubuntu loading
screen. I did receive feedback from selinux in tty1 and a fail on
networking and a freeze just past winbind in tty7.

If you need logs, I can't really transfer them, but I can try my best to
relay the pertinent information, just let me know what and where.

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31rc7

2009-08-26 Thread Tom Pino
I can not get any of my 4 up to date installs of 9.10 64bit to shut down
right.

Not only that but they will not boot up either. Will boot somewhat to
recovery mode but not except password for terminal.

Installed another A4, no updates. Can boot it and boot to recovery menu
on others from there. apt-get update got new grub. Will not deal with
ext4 at all. But can still boot to new A4, redo grub-install and get to
same place in recovery. Will take password when coming from 31-5 kernal
The -6 and -7 just do not work at all and can not boot.

I guess I will have to keep updating and hoping.
