[Bug 45563] Re: Build of fglrx module fails
Hi All, This bug was reported a while ago but there hasn't been any recent activity. Just curious if this is still an issue with the latest Hardy Heron 8.04 Alpha release? http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Note that we'll keep this open against the actively developed kernel bug against 2.6.20 this will be closed. Thanks. ** Changed in: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Won't Fix ** Also affects: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- Build of fglrx module fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/45563 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

As far as sl-modem goes, I generally take the latest from debian testing and build it on ubuntu. > --though this is a featured suposedly supported-- There is another side to this I just thought of. The ATI cards are indeed supported out of the box, through the various restricted-driver packages. The issue in this case are with source packages used when building custom kernels. It is unlikely to affect a newbie in any way. Anyone sufficiently knowledgeable to build their own kernel will probably know that ubuntu != debian. So while I understand your frustration, I don't think the criticism is valid. Still, it would be nice to have this fixed. Of course I am asking "someone else" to do it because "I don't have the time". Makes me look like a prat doesn't it? :-) I think in future when I fix something I'll make the package available somewhere and add the url to the bug report. Cheap efficient way to provide community support. I suppose I'll get round to this one when my office machine gets up'ed to gutsy. regards, Izak -- Build of fglrx module fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/45563 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

A lot of drivers are affected by this change (the change being moving UTS_RELEASE to a different header file) but it is so simple to fix that it really isn't a problem. It simply means the driver was written for an older version of the kernel. In most cases it works perfectly after fixing the header file issue. > By the way I've returned to Official Debian Etch and all this sorts of > problems have gone away. They had way more time to get it going and if the development cycle of previous versions are anything to go on, we should be fine until 2011 or so :-P A direct comparison really isn't possible when ubuntu only has 6 month cycles. > Is it making a visualy cosmeticised distro out of Debian Sid which > crashes on loging or salutes you with a stalled black screen while > booting, does not allow you to enable some modules for some hardware > --though this is a featured suposedly supported-- the way to attract new > people to open and free software? I suspect certain small bits (or hardware combinations) do not get sufficient testing, they enter ubuntu directly from the debian side and they don't get fixed up in the 6 months between releases. Some don't even get fixed later. I don't think the dnsmasq package in Dapper ever got fixed (crashes when renewing a non-existend lease). And from my experience you can't properly cancel print jobs on parallel printers (most developers either don't have printers or don't have parallel printers anymore). The fix is often very simple: just pull the latest one from debian. I suppose you can complain all you want but if the package is in universe or multiverse, you have to shut up or fix it yourself. Or use debian. Ubuntu actually never made any promises other than supporting the "main" component so I suppose you have to accept that these are not really "supported". I've often considered doing something about this but I just don't have the time to become a full-time developer on ubuntu or debian. I recently looked over the debian process of becoming a developer and decided not to pursue it any longer: it is simply too much effort. I don't even know about ubuntu but it seems equally hard. There is also the matter of hardware that gets replaced. I only have one ATI card, at my place of work. In a year or so it might get replaced and it would no longer make sense for me to be the "ubuntu maintainer". I suppose a lot of people feel the same way, so the problem is solved many times over without it ever being fixed upstream in ubuntu. regards, Izak -- Build of fglrx module fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/45563 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 45563] Re: Build of fglrx module fails
I'am wondering if this issue has something to do with this other bug report I've posted recently https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /module-assistant/+bug/178789 By the way I've returned to Official Debian Etch and all this sorts of problems have gone away. I know this is no the place to get into this dabate but I am seriously putting into question the kind of developping model Ubuntu is implementing. For me it resembles quite near to that of a succesful (unfurtunately in my opinion) company located in the nice city of Redmond. Is it making a visualy cosmeticised distro out of Debian Sid which crashes on loging or salutes you with a stalled black screen while booting, does not allow you to enable some modules for some hardware --though this is a featured suposedly supported-- the way to attract new people to open and free software? And all this after having done a big deal of propaganda saying GNU/Linux is more stable, don't crashes, and solves all problems people have with Windows, and so on... I fear some new attracted users after having such bad experiences with this distribution and others which are a big deal worst will return to their Windows, payed or pirated, loughing on Linux "geeks" and thinking that this kind of issues Ubuntu have also affect Debian damaging its reputation. I think Ubuntu developers should be a rather more cautious with the releases not trying to go too fast making fast food for average stupid consumer as other non free closed source companies have done for a long time. Disclaimer: This comment should not be interpreted as derogatory, offensive, or threatenning in any way and it is made on a bonna fide basis trying to encourage people to improve this distribution and all free and open source software in general. Wateenellende? That is funny :-) Actually, I think this package might be obsolete. You can download the driver from ATI, do some magic with it and it spits out a debian package which includes kernel source code for the latest driver. This actually worked out of the box for me. Google tells me: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian_Installation_Guide http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=14139 both of which sounds a bit like what I did a couple of months ago (actually, when feisty first made it onto this box). regards, Izak -- Build of fglrx module fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/45563 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 45563] Re: Build of fglrx module fails
Problem still present in gutsy. Tried to send an email to the maintainer - his email address does not exists anymore. Hereby for any maintainer that might stumble upon it. Hello, are you still the maintainer for the fglrx-source ? If so, please find attached a patch which solves some of the problems mentioned in bug 45563: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20/+bug/45563 These problems exist apparently for a long time, and have made this package useless since Warty. The discussion on the bug page mentions the possibility of using the latest driver from ATI instead, however, this information is now outdated as: "Several distribution-specific packaging scripts are not up-to-date in this release. In particular packaging for 64-bit Ubuntu versions is known to be broken. A topic number is not available for this issue" (Release notes for 8.42.3) This leaves people with an ATI card unable to use their system properly. Using the "pre-cooked" restricted drivers is not an option for people that compile their own kernel. (For example, because are forced to do so due to bugs in the kernel shipped with Gutsy, but would like to boot their computer anyway...) Coincidentally, the existence of the "pre-cooked" drivers proves that there is a working system to compile fglrx drivers for current kernels, which begs the question why the fglrx-kernel-source package should be so faulty. Why is there a fglrx kernel module in the linux-restricted- modules-2.6.17-10-generic package? And how can I build the restricted modules package myself for my own kernel? The kernel-source-fglrx is not used to build the standard ubuntu kernel, so I suppose this package is pretty uninteresting to any of the ubuntu developers ... !? Attached my patch to get it going on 2.6.18. As far as I could determine the changes to fglrx/build_mod/make.sh and fglrx/build_mod/firegl_public.c are only required for sufficiently new kernels (where VM_SHM was removed and UTS_RELEASE was moved out of linux/version.h). For earlier kernels you should probably remove those chunks from the patch. The above patch was sufficient to get it going with my Radeon X300. You need to change into /usr/src/modules, then pass -p1 to patch to apply. ** Attachment added: "Patch to compile fglrx module with kernel 2.6.18" http://librarian.launchpad.net/4777082/fglrx.patch -- Build of fglrx module fails https://launchpad.net/bugs/45563 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I 2 have tried the official UBUNTU kernel and also the VANILAs and on none of the kernel this works. And also lots of ppl report the same bahaviour in UBUNTUFORUMS.ORG. So the only workarround is to use FGLRX from ATI.COM and instruct FGLRXs installer to spit out FGLRX-KERNEL-SOURCE. And then U can compile it easily with module-assistant. I only recompiled to patch in linux-phc (undervolting) and in the process did some basic config tweaks, but all the Ubuntu patches are in there as with the stock kernel. @ashrack: please calm down... ubuntu devs have a lot of work to do and this bug is not very urgent since most of the people using Ubuntu on the desktop will not need to recompile their kernel at all. However, I agree, it should be solved "somewhen". BTW: I managed to get that fglrx module compile using the original fglrx installer from ATI: - call it with --buildpkg Ubuntu/6.06 to build the packages - install the fglrx-kernel-source deb - unpack /usr/src/fglrx.tar.bz2 - cd to /usr/src/modules/fglrx - chmod 755 make.sh - sed -i "s/#KVERS#/$(uname -r)/g" debian/control.template - debian/rules binary_modules Strange, though, using module-assistant it did _not_ work correctly (the fglrx.ko complained "invalid module format" when trying to modprobe). Also, make did not like my /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.17-rc6-k8 (complained about missing "Makefile.lib.c" although this is not mentioned anywhere in the scripts) so I removed the headers package and softlinked linux-source-2.6.17-rc6 to linux-headers-2.6.17-rc6-k8. The source also does not provide Makefile.lib.c, but make did not complain again. Thanks for the clarification, Emilio I think you're right that this problem affects the building of maybe any module against a custom kernel, and isn't a problem with the fglrx driver. Eventually, lots of Ubuntu users will want to recompile for features just not available in the stock kernel, and making things like ATI or Nvidia drivers work with a custom kernel is crucial to a satisfactory experience with the OS. -- Build of fglrx module fails https://launchpad.net/bugs/45563 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 45563] Re: Build of fglrx module fails
You should download ati-installer, build dapper packages, install only the fglrx-kernel-source package. The you must decompress fglrx-kernel-source.tar.gz in /usr/src. The you have to edit /usr/src/modules/fglrx/debian/control.template to match this: Source: fglrx-installer Section: restricted Priority: extra Maintainer: ATI Technologies Inc. Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 4.2.11), kernel-package Package: fglrx-kernel-#KVERS# Architecture: amd64 i386 Provides: fglrx-kernel Depends: ${XSERVER}-driver-fglrx (= 7.0.0-8.25.18+2.6.15.11-1) Recommends: linux-image-#KVERS# Description: ATI binary kernel module for Linux #KVERS# Video driver for the ATI Radeon and FireGL graphics accelerators. . This package provides the binary kernel module for Linux #KVERS#. only the version in Depends is changed to match ubuntu version numbers. I had problems building also other modules from source packages, like vmware-player-kernel-source (see bug https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/vmware-player- kernel-2.6.15/+bug/48755). I think that ubuntu devs don't care too much to modules built from sources and custom kernels... I'm wrong? This is why debian is still better. You have more freedom, but freedom has its price (slow release cicle and many other problems..). [Bug 45563] Re: Build of fglrx module fails
its almost a month since the first bug report was made for this bug and still no DEV have answered here. Do U guys think that they are even aware of this bugs or are they just quietly waiting for the next FGLRX drivers to come out and "hopefully" they will get it right. If this is the case it would be nice of them to tell us that we can expect a fix when the new FGLRX drivers do come out!!! -- Build of fglrx module fails https://launchpad.net/bugs/45563 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 45563] Re: Build of fglrx module fails
Same problem here, and it's up on ubuntuforums, too. Emisca, could you elaborate on your workaround? How did you change the version number in your fglrx-kernel-source?
