[Bug 571534] Re: Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login
I have the same problem in ubuntu 10.04 with a logitec wired usb mouse on a medion MD96970 laptop (intel): the mousebuttons stop working randomly (both buttons, the wheel and the touchpad taps and buttons). Before the problem occurs I sometimes notice that in vuze legacy UI items from the torrent lists tend to be selected when I move over them, but when I left click on one item all other items are deselected. The problem usually starts with the panel and the top window panes not reacting to clicks, this can be fixed by using alt+f4. Two keyboard shortcuts also stop working, those being: alt+tab and alt+f1. Alt+f1 does highlight the applications button but does not open the menu. Shortly after reviving the panel function the mouse stops working again, this time clicks within applications do not work either. Sometimes ctrl+alt+backspace or alt+sysrq+k works, but sometimes it does not. At this point, when I try alt+f2=>"gksu reboot" I get an error message stating "Cannot grab Mouse", so I tend to fix the issue by opening terminal and "sudo reboot". This bug seems similar to bug #41301 except that in #41301 it is mentioned that the keyboard works perfectly. So, as I think a malfunction in alt+tab is rather noticeable during a mouse defect, I decided to comment in this report. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/571534 Title: Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/571534/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Had problem with mouse freeze and buttons didnt work earlier in 10.04 runing on a Lenovo U350 amd64. Had this problem for a long time, tried a lot of different thing to try to fix this. An then the problem was fixed after a reinstall and upgrade to 10.10. Its been working fine now for a long time. But last week it was back again. To get the mouse working again i have to put the system to sleep mode. then it works fine for 1 min to several hours before the problem reoccures. [Bug 571534] Re: Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login
I'm experiencing the exact same problems on Ubuntu 11.04. After a reboot the mouse works fine on the gdm login screen. When I login the mouse works until I star a program. After that the left mouse button stops working. I have to do a service gdm restart and log back in to get it working again. After the gdm restart it all works fine. I can reproduce this easily as this happens on every reboot. [Bug 571534] Re: Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login
I have been using 10.04LTS on two machines, and just installed it again on a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5918 for someone else. I am experiencing a similar problem where the mouse cannot click on things. Upon restart, things go back to normal. I tried using Microsoft wireless 5000 mouse, Microsoft IntelliMouse, and the touchpad on the laptop with the same result. What happens is that the pointing device, (anyone of the above,) would lost its ability to get focus on an object. However, I can still "tab" my way around and use keyboard to execute "clicks". I was able to finally find some additional info that may be helpful. When it fails, I can do Alt-F4 to close the application and get back to desktop, and at that point, I will re-gain control of mouse to launch another application. I then launch Sudoku, a game that comes with standard install, and found the following issue. When I click on a square for the first time, it will get focus. I I move to another square and click, my focus will not move, but rather, the original square will get the click and gets into the number selection screen. If I do Alt-F1 to get out of the selection screen, I can move to another square using keyboard, and move the focus there, but not with the mouse click. Now, what may be most significant find is that when the focus is moved to a second square using keyboard cursors, and I click on the mouse anywhere on screen, the click is sent to the original square, and opens up the selection screen for that square, not the new square. On all the machines that I have 10.04LTS installed, only this one is intel based. All others have AMD solution. Another observation is that when my initial installation is completed, and the CD ejected, the screen keeps saying there is an error. I found that it should not be a concern with on line installation document, but just some more information to share. Also, when it happens, I noticed that screen saver seems to be locked into the background. As soon as I close the focus grabbing app with AltF4, the login screen will appear. I don't think screen saver is the cause of the problem, as I have disabled it and the same problem still occurs. Another observation. On the working machine, under System-Preference- Mouse, I have only two tabs, General, and Accessibility. On the offending one, I have three tabs, General, Accessibility, and Touchpad. I don't know why there is a Touchpad tab on the offending machine, as both machines have Touchpad on them. I hope this could be helpful. [Bug 571534] Re: Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login
One more thing about this: as I may have said, I am getting this problem mostly on my netbook, which also has a touchpad. As the keyboard is small, I actually have to hold my thumb up, so that I do not accidentaly "step" on the touchpad - which is otherwise sensitive to static electricity. Well, I have recently noticed that sometimes I my thumb apparently gets tired, and starts resting on the touchpad. I haven't really tested this - but this (the thumb resting on the touchpad for a few seconds) seems to somehow freeze the mouse clicks also; so the last couple of freezes, I'd simply try to press the 'right-click' button on the touchpad, and I'd get the mouse clicks unfrozen as well ?! Anyways, just thought I'd jot this down... [Bug 571534] Re: Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login
Ok, I think this is the first time I recovered from this kind of freeze, partly thanks to this comment: > does anyone know the fix for ubuntu 10.04? > Ive seen this problem with many many > distro's and have been unable to find a fix > for ubuntu. It appears to be a problem with > the usb port, if i unplug my mouse dongle > and move it to a diff usb port the problem > seems to go away, until it happens again. from 'Keep getting "Could not grab your mouse" error messag' - http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/keep-getting-could-not-grab-your-mouse-error-messag-698766/ So, the mouse (in this case the 'MX Revolution Cordless Mouse') froze, and first thing I did was go to first console via Alt-F1, logged in there, and issued: $ sudo modprobe -r usbhid $ sudo modprobe usbhid This recovered the clicking, once I was back at the desktop, for a short while - but then it started failing again... After that, I unplugged the USB dongle, and plugged it back in - and now it seems the mouse responds to clicks in a more stable fashion... (I'm rebooting now anyways - but at least its nice being able to save your work :) ) Well, hope this may help, Cheers! -- Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/571534 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 571534] Re: Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login
Hi jollywollup, I just had this problem again, and came back to the thread (trying to navigate Firefox by keyboard, lol) to see if there's everything new! :) So I could do a little test... On the laptop, my default mouse is a wireless Logitech, with one of these smallest 'nano' receivers (sorry, can't find the model numbers written anywhere on my mice, so cannot provide them now). This one, again today, stopped responding to mouse clicks. So I disconnected it, and plugged in the 'desktop' mouse, which is also a wireless Logitech (however an older one, with one of those bigger USB receivers). I connected it to the same USB port that the 'default' mouse uses - this mouse could move the pointer without problems; however, it still did not respond to mouse clicks.. Finally, I have yet another Logitech mouse, even older - but this one is wired. So I unplugged the 'desktop' mouse, plugged the 'wired' mouse in the same USB port - and same thing again; clicks are ignored, but mouse pointer is moved all right... Needless to say, haven't tried it yet to run entire session from computer power up onwards, and see if this occurs again... By the way - would anyone know which driver (or service) is responsible for the mouse in Ubuntu? Occasionally, when this 'mouse clicks ignored' situation occurs, I can still do Alt+F2 or Alt-tab (but sometimes not, I should mention); and then I could start up gnome-terminal, and possibly do a "sudo modprobe -r ... / sudo modprobe ..." or "sudo service ... restart" - if I only knew the name of the driver/service to call! (again, 'sudo service gdm restart' does fix the problem with the clicks - but it logs off the user back to the starting screen, closing all running programs in the process; what I'd like is to restart a driver/service without closing all the running programs). Also, I should mention that when the mouse clicks stop responding, so does the scroll wheel as well.. Also, usually the situation starts occurring when I'm either in Firefox (although I keep the vanilla version installed, I actually use Mozilla's version) or in Scite. Well, hope this sheds some more light - let me know if I can provide some other info Cheers!

Just to mention that I'm affected by this bug on my MSI Wind netbook - usually after suspend, mouse ( Logitech USB ) stops responding to clicks - interestingly, usually it starts by ignoring clicks on window title bars (i.e. I cannot move windows anymore by left click and dragging) although for a while, clicks may still be registered inside a program (i.e. Scite) or by clicking the window entries on the bottom bar - however, after a while, mouse responsivity dies, and I have to do 'sudo service gdm restart' to get mouse back ( unfortunately, this command closes all possible programs and logs you off ) ... Funnily, I haven't seen this problem on my Lucid desktop (upgraded from 9.10 - whereas the netbooks first OS was Lucid) - where additionally, mouse gestures applet (actually, 'Dwell Click') is enabled ??! -- Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/571534 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I may be onto something here. At least I haven't seen it now for a week since i disabled mouse gestures. I'm a heavy gesture user especially in browsers and use them without really thinking. Somehow I had the feeling that I had always done something in Firefox, Konqueror or Rekonq when the mouse died. So, i disabled gestured (System settings -> Input Actions -> Gestures) and haven't seen it since. If I still see the error I'll mention it here, but it seems to not be related to anything as low level as the kernel, but more a desktop problem. -- Lucid - Mouse stops working after shortly after login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/571534 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
