Finally I found a (the?) solution to the problem: The disk partitioner had some problems with the partitioning of one of my HDDs. When unplugging /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc the installer (10.04 and 10.10) would run nicely. After creating a new partition table (backup first!) and then re-creating the partitions I ran the installer again and successfully completed the installation without any complications. Don't know where this came from as to my knowledge I only used *nix tools to partition the drives. I was seeing this problem, but was able to beat it simply by using a different USB stick. I had reinstalled on the first stick (PNY 4GB mini-attache) multiple times with UNR, desktop and alternate, but as soon as I switched to the second USB stick (PNY 2GB optima) the alternate cd image (installed with unetbootin) worked perfectly. FYI, I managed to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook on an Eee PC S101 without encountering this problem. Setup: Installer running from a pluggable SD drive (created with the ubuntu startup disk creator) Running the installer in a "live session", ie, after booting Ubuntu proper. This is not specific to SSDs. I am seeeing this on a Lenovo X61 tablet with an ordinary SATA drive. In my case this definitely has to do with the USB stick being connected. With the desktop (32-bit) and the netbook live disks if I remove the usb drive (breaking the rootfs) before cllicking continue from the keyboard selection screen it will successfully detect the hard drive and continue to the end of the install before hanging when it can't find the needed files. Otherwise it freezes displaying the keyboard selection screen. I have also tried installing using a usb installation of the alternate cd (prepared with unetbootin) and it progresses to the partitioning page, but freezes at 43% stating it is scanning drives.
