[Bug 67196] Re: mouse pointer disappears after switch to console or resuming from sleep
This bug still happens with Gutsy and the old i810 driver when coming back from suspend to ram (suspend to disk is fine). The new intel driver is not an option since it crashes on suspend, see corresponding report. On my X40 with 855GM chipset the above SWCursor workaround works (but is not compatible with DRI). See man i810 for details. [Bug 67196] Re: mouse pointer disappears after switch to console or resuming from sleep
I am running Gutsy (upgraded from Fiesty) and the cursor specific problem is solved. However, a new problem has emerged, that sometimes (but not always) the machine come back from sleep in frozen state: that is the password dialog box does not show a cursor and would not let me enter a password. Doing Alt+Ctrl+Del let's me log in anew, but then the GUI does not show anything, just random color patterns show up. Also, the cursor problem exists if the machine is put to sleep using the s2both command (from the uswsusp package) but I guess that's a separate issue. -- mouse pointer disappears after switch to console or resuming from sleep https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/67196 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 67196] Re: mouse pointer disappears after switch to console or resuming from sleep
This problem sounds disturbingly familiar to the problem with Dell BIOSes where you cannot tell the BIOS you've allocated more video memory. (see: http://www.mail-archive.com/devel@xfree86.org/msg02247.html) The patch mentioned there was later introduced into the XFree86 source tree, (and I assume into XOrg). Since this obviously wasn't a problem in the last version of Ubuntu and since users aren't reporting problems getting 1024x768 resolution (another side effect of the BIOS bug), does anyone have a reasonable explanation as to what may have changed between releases to cause this problem? -- mouse pointer disappears after switch to console or resuming from sleep https://launchpad.net/bugs/67196 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 67196] Re: mouse pointer disappears after switch to console or resuming from sleep
Adriaan, Well, it just seems to me that this particular problem with the Dell BIOS has caused several differnet types of problems, and on the outset it would appear that this particular issue also falls into this category as well. Also, it may be of interest to note that this same problem has been reported in the debian bug reports for the xserver-xorg-video-i810 as well. (see: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=407798). They seem to suggest trying another debian package xserver-xorg- video-i810-modesetting although it's currently under development. Some research shows that it's in the Ubuntu Feisty package tree... Re: [Bug 67196] Re: mouse pointer disappears after switch to console or resuming from sleep
I did not have any problem at any point after upgrading to Edgy from Dapper. It seems the icon disappearing problem is independent of any such problems. Re: [Bug 67196] Re: mouse pointer disappears after switch to console or resuming from sleep
A better solution is adding an extra line (Option SWCursor yes ) in xorg.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf Device section. In my case, the device section looks like: Section Device Identifier Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device Driver i810 BusID PCI:0:2:0 Option UseFBDev true Option SWCursor yes EndSection However, this only solves the cursor problem, not the icon disappearing one. [Bug 67196] Re: mouse pointer disappears after switch to console or resuming from sleep
Having updated the BIOS of my Dell Inspiron 510m to the latest version A11, there's still no possibility to set the video memory. What I noticed though, is the following: The BIOS knows an option 'Video Expansion' which enables/disables the scaling of a lower resolution to a higher, native LCD resolution. The native resolution is 1400x1050 (whence I need tu use the 915resolution- patch). The usplash complains about not being able to set the resolution to 1024x786 nor 800x600 and is running with 640x480 (the splash-screen not being centered very well, if the the scaling is enabled). I disabled this scaling in the BIOS. The boot-splash still runs with 640x480, but is centerd nicely. After login (gnome is running with 1400x1050), when I switch to the tty-consoles (Crtl-Alt-F1) the screen still isn't scaled. Switching back (Crtl-Alt-F7) the mouse-pointer has disappeared. Switching back to tty1 (Crtl-Alt-F1) now the screen is scaled (despite of the BIOS-setting)! (the same true for the splash-screen during shutdown). I presume that this scaling begins already with the switching to Crtl-Alt-F7 (the same with resume after suspend). Could it be possible that the mouse-pointer (which is a hardware-cursor) inherits this scaling of the tty-consoles and due to this cannot be displayed any more together with the graphical surface which is not being scaled? -- mouse pointer disappears after switch to console or resuming from sleep https://launchpad.net/bugs/67196 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
