All the same to me! I'm told to uninstall the bcmwl-kernel, but when I do, I'm told that synaptic can't uninstall it! The other problem I have: I've just bought a new printer (Canon Pixma IP4850), but it do'nt work vith Ubuntu 11.04. :( What the H-- shal I do? throw it out and by a new one - but how do I know, if a new printer works under Ubuntu xx.xx ? I hope one day, LINUX wil be as less of trubble as APPLE and WINDOWS, then I'll be able to recomend it to friends and family. - Until then, I have to discourage from Ubuntu as well as any LINUX-aplication! I do'nt expres an answer - but if anyone have the courage - I'll give it a chance. Francis, Sorry if you have been waiting on me for this, I thought we emails were just a big mailing list and any error I reported would just to some database and most likely be ignored(I'm used to windows after all). I just starting to play with ubuntu on an old computer I happen to have lying around and only get around to playing with it so often. I got my computer working on that although I'm not entirely sure which thing I did worked. I tried a couple things on the dell mini forum that got it working for me. I had thought obuntu would have been easier to setup on the dell mini since some of them shipped with it. [Bug 711397] Re: package firmware-b43legacy-installer 4.178.10.4-5 failed to install/upgrade due to unsupported hardware
Dell Inspiron 5150 w/Broadcom BCM4306 v.2 running 11.04 in Classic mode @MasterNetra - thank you for your solution however, not only did not work, but it took my eth0 down with no way to bring it back until removing the 10.04 bcmwl-kernel-source. I was 'close' as the wireless icon showed up; still no wireless connection. As @Tim Holy said, that this does not seem to work with the 'legacy' Broadcom BCM4306 v.2 lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4 02:02.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4320] (rev 02) BTW, system was working perfectly well running 10.04LTS, w/wireless and NVIDIA video card working as expected. Decided to upgrade (!) going to 10.10 first then to 11.04. After several attempts (system crashed due to problems w/NVIDIA video card (still Drive active but not currently in use) I decided to download 11.04 (for a fresh install) losing all data I had. Worked around the NVIDIA issue by not running Unity but in Classic mode w/no effects --not sure I want to deal with grub again. Solution at http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#b43 - Internet access does not seem to work either. So far this migration to 11.04, dealing w/NVIDIA and the Broadcom drivers issues, has been a nightmare. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/711397 Title: package firmware-b43legacy-installer 4.178.10.4-5 failed to install/upgrade due to unsupported hardware To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/b43-fwcutter/+bug/711397/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 711397] Re: package firmware-b43legacy-installer 4.178.10.4-5 failed to install/upgrade due to unsupported hardware
It seems the right solution depends on your card. If I understand correctly, my BCM4306 rev 2 card is not supported by the bcmwl driver, so the solution above is not relevant for me even if it works for many others. If I were to guess at the problem, the firmware-b43legacy-installer is fooled by a component of the output of lspci: lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4 02:03.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4320] (rev 02) I think the 14e4:4320 makes b43legacy-installer convinced this is a BCM4320 card, which is b43 and not b43legacy. Hence it refuses to install. However, this page: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 suggests that this output is expected and that one really is supposed to use the b43legacy firmware. After first ensuring that b43-fwcutter was installed, I followed the manual instructions later on that page: export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR=/lib/firmware wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o sudo b43-fwcutter -w $FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o After a reboot, I had to manually start the driver: sudo modprobe b43legacy But then it seems to work (it finds and connects to my network). I will insert b43legacy into /etc/modules to get this to happen automatically at boot.

Re: [Bug 711397] Re: package firmware-b43legacy-installer 4.178.10.4-5 failed to install/upgrade due to unsupported hardware
you have to have bcmwl-kernel-source from 10.10 installed, the 11.04 version is broke. Download it from: http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/bcmwl-kernel-source After you download it, remove 11.04's version from repo, I usually use synaptic to search for it, then install the 10.10 version (You don't need to bcmwl-kernel-source's dependencies from 11.04, those are fine). After thats installed, go back into synaptic, find bcmwl-kernel-source again and this time, select it, and goto Package Lock Version to prevent it being upgraded back to the broken natty version. After all that, restart your computer and it should be working again. * * On Sun, May 8, 2011 at 4:02 PM, caroline 711...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote: hello I have a bcm4312 abd I have'nt wifi with ubuntu 11.4 It was working with 10.4 What can I do ? [Bug 711397] Re: package firmware-b43legacy-installer 4.178.10.4-5 failed to install/upgrade due to unsupported hardware
Here is a work around for ya, use 10.10's bcmwl-kernal-source: http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/bcmwl-kernel-source Remove the old one, and after you install the one from maverick be sure to hop on synaptic, find bcmwl-kernal-source again and goto Packages Lock Version after you have found and highlighted it. This is to prevent any accidental upgrades back to natty's version which would once again break it. Once all is done you could restart, or just wait patiently for it to refresh and connect/supply nearest wifi locations.
