[Bug 783313] Re: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable
DAP, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As the original issue was due to a firmware bug, this report is considered closed. [Bug 783313] Re: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable
I was able to turn the boot flag on with this command: sudo parted /dev/sde set 1 boot on but it did not do any good. I still can't boot from the OCZ drive. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/783313 Title: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 783313] Re: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable
broken drive firmware caused initial problem. Broken installer puting grub on a random drive remains as a bug that needs to be fixed. If the installer notices that there is more than one grub installed, or if the grub it finds is not on the disk it has been told to install on, IT SHOULD ASK THE USER WHERE HE WANTS GRUB INSTALLED! not randomly choose a drive to install grub on. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/783313 Title: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 783313] Re: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable
I think I have this figured out. The first issue was that the drive originally had version 2.02 of the firmware. This firmware is seriously broken and prevents this drive from working, and prevents other drives plugged into the same controller from working. My original install attempt was with just the OCZ drive installed on the computer. By the time I had updated the firmware on the drive, I was leaving the other drives attached when I tried to install on the OCZ drive. This lead to the second problem. The installer picks a random drive to install grub on. In this case it kept installing grub on the 250 GB drive I have in the system to do test installs on. Even though I told the installer to do a complete clean install on the OCZ drive. Even though I told the BIOS that the OCZ drive was the boot drive. The installer never asked which of the two drives that had grub installed on them to use, it just arbitrarily picked the wrong one and went with it. I did not realize that because I kept switching between the OCZ drive and the 1.5 GB main drive. Anyway I finally did a clean install with the OCZ drive being the only drive in the system at the time. And now that the drive has version 2.06 of the firmware it boots. So this bug is now a bug in the installer, and it should be reported that the installer picks a random drive to install grub on. Now that I know this I can work around it. What a waste of a week. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/783313 Title: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 783313] Re: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable
I have now attempted to re-install Ubuntu on the drive while it was attached to the SATA III controller. Still hangs on boot. I left boot on CD-ROM enabled this time in the BIOS, and the screen was not quite blank this time, it still had the CD-ROM boot message on it when it hung. I think this means it is not even getting to Grub. Can someone confirm this? Any suggestions for a work around? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/783313 Title: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I was able for the first time to boot with this drive attached to the chipset controller, and still see the drive after booting. [Bug 783313] Re: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable
Ran some additional experiments today: I bought an e-sata enclosure and connected the OCZ drive to the e-sata port (yet another sata IC so therefore yet another driver to try). I got the same results as with the sas port: blank screen with flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the screen when trying to boot from the OCZ drive, but can still boot from other drives. I bought an SIIG DP SATA 6GB/s 2S1P PCIe SATA III adapter card. (it is PCIe x1 so it can't achieve more than 4 Gb/sec, but it is yet another controller, and yet another driver) This uses a Marvell 88SE91xx according to the bios. Got the same results as the other two Marvell controllers: flashing cursor in the upper left corner when attempting to boot from the OCZ drive, Can boot from other drives. (An interesting side note: The read bench mark gets 411.7 MB/sec with this controller, 193 MB/sec with the other Marvell controllers). I will take the drive to work tomorrow to update its firmware (Requires windows, and I don't use windows at home). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/783313 Title: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 783313] Re: OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive makes system unstable
Successfully upgraded the firmware to 2.06. Still can not boot from the drive. I need to try and move the drive back to the chipset controller and see if at least the firmware update allows me to boot with this drive attached to the same controller as the boot drive. I should also try re-installing Linux yet again in case the old firmware somehow corrupted the boot code.
