[Bug 151857] Suspend [to ram or disk] fails on Latitude D810

2007-10-12 Thread pcarter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

Suspend to ram and to disk fail on Latitude D810. Both result in Ubuntu
going through the standard suspend procedure and blanks the screen,
however, the fans continue to spin and the power light does not indicate
that the suspend succeeded. Magic SysRq keys and the power button are
the only ways to recover from this. Both forms of suspend work in
2.6.20.

[Bug 151856] sleep 1 in init.d script for restart may not be enough...

2007-10-12 Thread Robby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: icecast2

Basically, from time to time when I execute /etc/init.d/icecast2 restart
and icecast is running the restart command will error out on the start-
stop-daemon --start command with the output that icecast2 is already
running (you need to remove the --quiet tag to see this). Extending the
sleep time to 2 seconds between the two start-stop-daemon commands seems
to fix this race condition.

But all is not lost, luckily eclipse happens to be extremely easy to

[Bug 115616] Re: Device-mapper errors: dm-linear, lookup failed

2007-10-12 Thread Paul Smith
I just upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy RC tonight, and I still ran into
this problem. My system couldn't mount any of my partitions other than
/ (so no /home, etc.) and I was getting errors spewing to the log file
and udev stealing tons of CPU. At first I ran /etc/init.d/udev stop to
get back the CPU, but couldn't mount /home at all still. Then I
rebooted with my 2.6.20 kernel and that worked but of course all my
special KLMs like nvidia don't run anymore since they've been
recompiled.

EVMS is installed on my system, but I never installed it myself nor do I
use it nor do I even know what it is. This system has been upgraded
starting with Breezy, I think; it definitely had Dapper on it. In
addition to evms and evms-ncurses I had libevms installed. I don't know
whether the upgrade offered to remove evms or not: it offered to remove
a lot of things and I said yes and it successfully removed them all.

I've removed evms, evms-ncurses and libevms via synaptic and rebooted
and now my system comes up OK.

But, contrary to the status of this bug as fixed released, it's
definitely not fixed in Gutsy RC1.

[Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.3

2007-10-12 Thread Progress Nerd
This is pretty trivial, but in my pursuit of desktop perfection, I'm a
bit annoyed by the eclipse icon (icon.xpm file) that comes bundled in
the precompiled version of Eclipse from Eclipse.org. Namely, it has a
purple background around the Eclipse sphere instead of transparency. I
recall getting an icon with a transparent background when I installed
Eclipse 3.2 from the repository, and that's definitely the icon you get
if you download the 3.3 Windows or Mac versions. What's extra strange is
that I had Eclipse 3.3 running when I tried out the AWN dock recently,
and the nicer icon magically appeared in the dock! Where did it come
from, and why doesn't it look that way when I create a custom launcher
for Eclipse with icon.xpm as the icon?

I would say that it is odd that development-packages is
distribution-dependent. Any version of Eclipse should be updated /
installed on any distro-version you are using.
In other words: Distribution independent.

And it should be easy to install so you don't have to spend hours and
hours and ... to get your development-tool up and running.

/etc/usplash.conf has 1280x1024, which should be supported, but only up

[Bug 150873] Re: [KUbuntu 7.04] Konqueror not showing the bookmark bar anymore

2007-10-12 Thread uqbar
Well, with another user it seems the bookmark management is working.
So your idea seems to be right. What I'd like to avoid is to loose:
- 2+ GB email in KMail
- 1000+ Contacts in Kontact
- 100+ saved forms and passwords in KDE Wallet Manager

Is there a way to be sure to save and later restore them?

And btw. Whenever I /etc/init.d/dbus start my eth0 gets reconfigured.

[Bug 123150] Re: Audacious unable to play MP3 streams

2007-10-12 Thread Shkodran Gerguri
The streams are from:

www.radioakropolis.cz - http://www.radioakropolis.cz:8000/highest.ogg
somafm.com - http://scfire-ntc-aa03.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1018

I can play them in Rhytmbox with no problems. As for my internet
connection, this is unlikely to be an issue, both due to the error
message of Audacious and the fact that I can play the streams in
Rhytmbox with no problems.

It's not a timeout, the error message pops up when trying to play the
streams, as described in this bug, stating that either the codecs aren't
present or they are not correctly set up (both of which is untrue).

Thanks for both of you who sent replies.

If you are using GNOME on gutsy, have scim-gtk2-immodule installed, and
using im-switch to set the input method (and if it's a fresh install of
gutsy, it will be using im-switch), would you please try the im-switch
-s scim command and see if it avoids the crash?

(There may be problems of frozen input in nautilus and other programs
after you change the im-switch setting, though. Please see bug #66104
for the details and workarounds of this frozen input problem.)

[Bug 66104] Re: scim: input freezes in various applications under XIM mode

2007-10-12 Thread Ming Hua
** Description changed:

In gutsy, the default mode of scim (detemined by im-switch's settings
scim) uses XIM mode. This may cause problems in some applications and
make it impossible to input anything, even if you choose the
English/Keyboard input method. This happens most often in nautilus, but
is also seen in gedit, gnome-terminal, etc.

This bug has been around for a long time, it only became more visible
because of the change in the default settings of scim and the Ubuntu
  package.

There are two work arounds for this problem:

  1. If you do not use any programs linked to libstdc++5 (very few of the
Ubuntu official packages do, one know exception is the fglrx video
driver for ATi cards; but plenty of third-party programs do, such as
firefox downloaded from www.mozilla.com, and Adobe's PDF reader), you
can use the scim-immodule setting in im-switch. To change the im-switch
  setting, just run im-switch -s scim-immodule command.

- 2. If you do not use the deadkeys (often seen on European keyboards, and if
you dont' know what a deadkey is, you are not using it), you can change scim's
/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic setting. The procedure to change this setting is:
+ 2. If you do not use the deadkeys (often seen on European keyboards, and if
you don't know what a deadkey is, you are not using it), you can change scim's
/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic setting. The procedure to change this setting is:
  (a) Set scim not to start automatically (because it's useless to change the
configuration file when scim is running) using the command im-switch -s none.
 Log out and re-login.
  (b) Edit your ~/.scim/config configuration file, change the
/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic option to true.
  (c) Reset scim to start automatically with command im-switch -s scim. Log
out and re-login.

If you are using programs linked to libstdc++5 as well as deadkeys,
there is no known workaround for you. You may try the scim-bridge
- setting of im-switch (you need to install scim-bridge-* packages first),
- but it's not clear whether it works or not.
+ settings (you need to install scim-bridge-* packages first), but it's

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 43169 ***

This bug is definitely not a duplicate of bug #43169, whatever it is;
that marking is in error.

This behaviour is irritating if you use hibernate and there's a very
simple fix - it would be nice to see the fix go into Gutsy. gnome-
screensaver can now very straightforwardly be configured via PAM to pass
your passphrase on to gnome-keyring, so that typing the passphrase once
serves for both jobs. See:

http://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/Pam

Whether or not you decide this fix is appropriate though, please fix the
duplicate status on this bug - thanks!

[Bug 151867] vpn pptp on Kubuntu is not available

2007-10-12 Thread dentaku65
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knetworkmanager

In this last version the menu are ok, but when i select pptp or ppp, i get the
message :
There is no configuration interface for the VPN service pptp installed. Please
check your installation.

I think is a big problem because KVpnc does not work with
Knetworkmanager and of course the KNetworkManager dialog allows
configuration for service types OpenVPN and VPNC but not for PPTP (and
PPP). Options ppp and PPTP says no configuration interface found.

Package info is as follows (Gutsy 32-bit):

network-manager Version: 0.6.5-0ubuntu14
network-manager-gnome Version: 0.6.5-0ubuntu9
network-manager-kde Version: 1:0.2ubuntu1-0ubuntu5
network-manager-openvpn Version: 0.3.2svn2342-1ubuntu2
network-manager-pptp Version: 0.6.5+svnhead2574-0ubuntu1

[Bug 151624] Re: Proposed importing audio CD when resuming from hibernation

2007-10-12 Thread Loïc Minier
(grmpf launchpad ate my comment)

I don't think I left sound-juicer open. I wasn't sure whether gnome-
volume-manager or hal would have enough information to take the decision
to launch sound-juicer or not as it probably requires querying the name
of the audio CD (but I'm not sure).

I guess what one expects is that after a suspend / resume, the data CD
or USB drives etc. are mounted again and if they are the same nothing is
done, but if they are different, then the usual action take place: if
it's data, nautilus should open it, if it's audio, sound-juicer should
import it etc.

I reassigned back to gnome-volume-manager because this might be more
generic than just audio CDs after all: if it's a new data CD, it should
be mounted and opened, if it was already in the drive before suspending,
it should probably be mounted but not displayed.

** Changed in: gnome-volume-manager (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: sound-juicer = gnome-volume-manager

[Bug 151865] Qt Designer Plugin contained in the libqtjambi-dev package does not work

2007-10-12 Thread Simon Hausmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libqtjambi-dev

When Qt designer is launched through the designer-qtjambi script the Qt
designer plugin for QtJambi is not loaded. Running ldd on
/usr/lib/qt4/plugins/designer/libJambiLanguage_debuglib.so indicates
that the plugin is linked against libqtjambi_debug.so, which does not
exist.

The plugin itself and everything else in QtJambi should probably be
built in release only, without any libraries with a _debug suffix.

Re: [Bug 127101] Re: laptop hangs when switching video mode

2007-10-12 Thread TDB
@Tim Hull:
I'm afraid to make things even more complicated in this situation... But
here are my results: 2.6.22-10 = no problem, 2.6.22-12 = had 1 random
hangup on resume, 2.6.22-14 = no problem. Testing method: tried 5
suspend/resume cycles on each kernel with XV and glxgears. I recall I
had the same hangups a couple of times before (1/20 rate or so) so it
has nothing to do with intel driver recent loop fix. For me it looks
like kernel + X issue and is very obscure and random. This one looks
orthogonal to gray blocks. With recent fixed intel driver I have no
more gray blocks problem with any tested kernel. Thanks.
Are you saying that this does happen with the 2.6.22-12 kernel for you? If
so, then your issue is different from mine - as my machine has suspend
issues with 2.6.22-13 and up but works fine in -12

[Bug 116990] Re: Rhythmbox sound problems (clicking/snapping/crackling) when not using crossfading backend

2007-10-12 Thread Loïc Minier
@Martin: I'm afraid the files had too low sound (amplitude didn't reach
the maximum) and hence are improper test cases.

To create a proper test case, people with a sound file exposing the problem
should convert it to wav with this command:
gst-launch -v filesrc location=Music/foo.ogg ! decodebin ! audioconvert !
audio/x-raw-int, width=(int)16, depth=(int)16 ! wavenc ! filesink
location=16.wav

(replace Music/foo.ogg with the path to your sound file)

and the same command with 16 replaced by 32 at the 3 places

then aplay 16.wav and aplay 32.wav.

(I don't get the bug, so it's not easy for me to attach a fixed test
file.)

[Bug 151869] nm-applet connects to unsecured networks by default

2007-10-12 Thread HappySpaceInvader
Public bug reported:

When I first boot up Ubuntu (on an Acer Aspire 5630 laptop), it always connects
immediately to the first unsecured wireless network it can find.
In my case, this means I connect to the unsecured wireless network of another
company in the same building as me, that they provide for their own visitors.
I have no permission to use this network.

In the United Kingdom, It is illegal to connect to a wireless network
without the express permission of the owner with the intent of using it
to obtain an Internet connection
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6960304.stm). The current
behaviour of the Network Manager applet is putting users at risk of
being accused of commiting a criminal offence under the Communications
Act 2003 and/or the Computer Misuse Act 1990. In such a circumstance,
the onus would then be on the user to show that they did not intend to
steal the service from the other party.

Network Manager should have the facility to remember the last network
you were connected to and use that instead of simply taking the easiest
route.

[Bug 151190] Re: cups-pdf fails for non-standard home directories

2007-10-12 Thread hunger
I think this is not a bug but intended behaviour. Apparmor is all about
restricting access to locations on disc after all;-)

I'd recommend tuning /etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home to include your
custom homedir location(s). That should fix all of the apparmor profiles
for your setup (even though it might not, apparmor is still pretty raw
in ubuntu IMHO). Well, any breakage after the change I proposed is a new
bug:-)

Best regards,
Tobias

[Bug 151870] [gutsy rc] nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 140M - display locked without nvidia-glx-new

after installation, the screen was blank, and I wasn't able to switch to
virtual consoles or reboot with the keyboard
I had to shutdown the hard way, boot with the install disk in rescue mode,
install ssh server just to start doing some tests

It happears the nv driver locked the screen.

then I found out I had to use nvidia-glx-new, installed it manually, and
now X works.

strangely enough, after starting and killing X with nvidia-glx-new
(Driver = nvidia), the nv driver worked correctly. but after a reboot
the same configuration locked the screen again.

then, I may suppose the nvidia driver does some initialization on the
hardware that enables the nv driver to work, but if the nv driver is run
after a reboot it isn't able to properly initialize the card.

I will post Xorg logs for the three cases.

I suggest the installer detects graphic cards that won't work, disable
automatic gdm startup and warn the user, or better suggests to install
the correct proprietary driver and does it if the user whishes.

a similar Xorg bug has already been filled for a Quadro FX 570M on Lenovo R61:

This is on 6.06 LTS.

A bit of looking around shows it's probably related to running a 32-bit
userland with a 64-bit kernel. See Debian bug #232401. Either way, it's
rather disturbing to find that I now have a production server without a
sensible means of logging firewall actions :-(

[Bug 151872] nm-applet does not list router when I change the broadcast channel

2007-10-12 Thread HappySpaceInvader
Public bug reported:

When I set my wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) to channel 1, it shows up
in the drop-down list of available networks. However, many other
companies in the same building as me have their routers set to channel
1, so I prefer to run my router on another channel (e.g. channel 7) to
minimise interference.

When I change the broadcast channel my router's SSID no longer shows up
in the available list of networks. If I choose connect to other
wireless network and enter in all the appropriate settings, I can
connect to my router, it then shows up in the available networks list
with a signal strength of 88%.

If I reboot my laptop, however, I have to go through the above procedure
again... unless I switch the router back to channel 1, in which case it
suddenly shows up in the list of available networks again.

[Bug 127584] Re: isight doesn't work

2007-10-12 Thread Gabriele Tassoni
The bug is still present on 2.6.22-14-generic, isight can be initialized
only at 320x240:

gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src ! video/x-raw-
yuv,format=\(fourcc\)UYVY,width=320,height=240 ! ffmpegcolorspace !
ximagesink

otherwise it freezes (on all attempts at 640x480 or by using gstreamer
based applications like cheese that defaults to 640x480).

So, bug still present for gutsy users.

[Bug 151877] gnome panel volume control alternates mute/% volume during sliding

2007-10-12 Thread fwheeler_1
Public bug reported:

Gnome panel volume control alternates mute/% volume while being slid to
adjust volume. If one stops while it says mute, the mute icon shows in
the panel and there is a check next to the mute option when left-
clicked. However, the volume is not muted. Left-clicking the volume
panel icon and selecting mute does mute the speakers. This is on a Dell
Dimension 8300 with a Dell SoundBlaster Live! card and the Alsa mixer
with speakers plugged into the speaker-out jack. Using Ubuntu Gutsy
7.10 RC as live cd. --Fw

[Bug 144796] Re: Glossary of Windows terms link doesn't work

2007-10-12 Thread Matthew East
I still think that yelp should work with this document.

Anyway, I've pushed the simple fix to the repository at
https://docteam.ubuntu.com/repos/branches/gutsy and there is a package
there waiting to be uploaded (ubuntu-main-sponsors subscribed).

My build is still going and I'm late for work so I'm afraid I can't
submit a debdiff. If no one else can do one, then I'll submit one
tomorrow. It should be very straightforward, this is the only change
since version 7.10.3 and it is text only.

Thanks
