I took a look at the hardy's emerald package, but it requires a newer

safe to update both libc6 and emerald on gutsy, using manually
downloaded packeges from hardy's repo? If it is then I will give it a

[Bug 162790] Re: mouse scroll wheel rolled up/back causes context menu to appear

2008-03-08 Thread zZyXx
I have the same problem but:
- I have it in all programs I tried where there is a context-menu:
OpenOffice.org, gedit, gnome terminal, nautilus
- it often also causes a clipboard paste, as if I clicked the scroll-button (I
take care not to accidentally click; I never have this while scrolling down)
- I have this problem from time to time; not sure what makes it go away or
reappear: rebooting? updates? an update to which package then?
- I'm not sure but I think I also experienced it in PCLinuxOS

by the way: it's very annoying!

[Bug 199862] [NEW] [hardy] evolution won't start immediately after the wizard is run

2008-03-08 Thread ViktorNagy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I just installed the daily hardy image, then run evolution.

The wizard starts fine, it finishes fine, but then nothing happens.
Evolution does not start, instead I have to start it by running it
again. (And then it works.)

I've tried to delete the ~/.evolution directory to see if I can
reproduce this feature, but it didn't help. Probably I should delete
something else.

Any ideas? Is there someone who can reproduce it?

[Bug 74362] Re: usb wireless device zd1211rw 5-2:1.0: zd_chip_control_leds error -19

2008-03-08 Thread martind
The bug just manifested on my
Linux 2.6.24-11-generic #1 SMP Fri Feb 29 22:08:31 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
It is not solved.

O remember having this problem for long time - probably from edgy
through feisty, gutsy and now in heron from alpha 1 to last update few
hours ago (alpha 6 I suppose).

I would suggest 2 things to all suffering from this bug:
1, do not use cable to connect your usb dongle, stick it right into usb. This
way I reduced my wifi problems down to random freeze every few hours (similar
to original bug text)
2, do not use power button, use ALT SYSRQ keyboard combination:
http://fosswire.com/2007/09/08/fix-a-frozen-system-with-the-magic-sysrq-keys/

I suspect this bug could be the combination of hardware and software
failure. First something goes wrong with dongle connection, which
unregister it from the usb bus. Then zd1211rw (or kernel) does not
handle this situation correctly. zd1211 continues to try reading from
disconnected dongle and partly hangs the whole usb subsystem.

Is there a way to restart usb subsystem without restarting the whole computer?
What else could be done to investigate this?

Last suggestion (to use zd1211rw-mac80211 which I tested unsuccessfully)
is almost year old. I would love to help to solve it, just give me some
direction what to test.

Re: [Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes (also non luks) in cryptsetup

2008-03-08 Thread Patrick J. LoPresti
/dev/random blocks until it has enough entropy to guarantee
randomness. That is probably why wiggling the touchpad gets things
going again.

If you have /dev/hwrandom, you can use that... Otherwise, you can use
/dev/urandom to avoid blocking, but theoretically this could give up
some security (since the random generator's internal state could be
predictable at boot).

[Bug 199866] [NEW] Navigating the Main Application Menu using the keyboard does not work fully

2008-03-08 Thread Mathias Dahl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Hi,

I find keyboard navigation of the main application menu a bit
confusing. After opening it with Alt+F1 and typing `p' it is not the
Programming sub menu that opens, as I would have guessed. Instead it is
the Places top menu (on my system the one to the right of the
Applications menu). When the Places menu is opened focus is given to the
top menu item there and I can type other keys to activate sub menus. The
same goes for the System top menu.

I found this illogical. Shouldn't the focus be at the top item of the
Applications menu when I activate it? If not, why, and how am I
supposed to activate menu items under it without using the cursor keys?

I also tried using `a' to activate the Applications menu but that did not work,
nothing happens. This is not consistent with `p' and `s' working
for the Places and System menus. If `a' activated the Applications menu the
behavior would be okay I guess.

Look at the attached image. It is this I see when doing Alt + F1.

I am running Ubuntu 7.10.

Thanks!

/Mathias

[Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes (also non luks) in cryptsetup

2008-03-08 Thread mish
I think your problem is related to using /dev/random in your crypttab

swap /dev/sda4 /dev/random swap

/dev/random collects entropy from different parts of the system
(including mouse/touchpad usage). I'm not sure, but I suspect entropy
is not saved at shutdown, so entropy must be collected again at start
up. /dev/random will block without enough entropy, and using the
touchpad is putting some entropy into the random number system.

If you want it to not block, try using /dev/urandom instead. It is not
quite as secure, but I think it is more than secure enough for the key
for the swap partition.

For more on the differences between /dev/random and /dev/urandom, see

$ man urandom

(On reading that it mentions a way to save entropy on shutdown, though I
think you would want to change the place to save it to not in /var/run
as that is a filesystem in RAM created by ubuntu on start up).

[Bug 199871] [NEW] apparmor depends on upstart-compat-sysv rendering the package unusable with sysvinit

2008-03-08 Thread Wolfgang Glas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apparmor

We need to start ubuntu gutsy as an openvz guest. upstart is not
compatible with openvz, si we need to use good, old sysvinit.

However, apparmor gets uninstalled, if we replace upstart with sysvinit,
because apparmor depends on upstart-compat-sysv.

IMHO, this dependency could very well be weakened to a dependency on
sysvinit|upstart-compat-sysv thus rendering the package usable for both
approaches.

A short inspection of apparmor inside hardy reveiled, that hardy is
affected as well as gutsy.

TIA for considering my suggestion,

   Wolfgang

[Bug 198572] Re: Can't change the weather in weather applet?

2008-03-08 Thread Randy LeJeune
You don't understand. The time zone I am allowed to choose is Rainy
River. That's fine for the time. But the longitude and latitude for my
location I chose by hand. Yet I am not allowed to choose from where I
get the weather information. The weather applet just appeared after I
updated the system one day. I am assuming that it is grabbing the
temperature from Rainy River since what is reported might make sense,
bit I don't see how to alter this.

Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I've also noticed this whenever I leave my USB key in my work machine
while logging in (under Feisty) but haven't noticed this behavior under
Gutsy.

[Bug 149460] Re: Successful rotation to nonexistent face

2008-03-08 Thread Jesse Burt
Fix confirmed...mostly. Here is my setup now:

Installation based on Hardy Alpha 4
Compiz set up with horizontal virtual size set to n ...let's say n=2
I can switch to desktop #1 using the binding for desktop #3, but only if I
switch to #2 first. If I try to switch to 3 from 1, it behaves as expected
(i.e., does nothing)
I have tested this with other values for horiz. virtual size...it behaves the
same way.
IOW, I can always switch to the first desktop by using the keybinding for the
number of desktops I actually have defined, plus one (n+1), as long as I am
currently viewing the last desktop (n)

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at [WWW]
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are
bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see [WWW]

also a workaround (downgrading a package.)

[Bug 198823] Re: update-manager crashes. E: Malformed line 80 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse), E: The list of sources could not be read.

2008-03-08 Thread Vijaybhasker
When I tried to open the file, software sources dialogue opened. I unchecked
'debian' in the 'Third Party Software' tab. Is this what you meant? Is there
any way to edit the file and take out the last line.
After I did this, the message in the bulb of the status line has changed to
'There are 13 updates available.' Is this normal.
Thanks.

If it helps at all, the floppy drive is a Samsung,

[Bug 188282] Re: hardy install alpha5 loops: broadcom: no firmware file

2008-03-08 Thread ftblstr2319
Alright, I may have a solution.

I have an acer extensa 4420 - 5237
I originally couldn't get 7.10 installed on the laptop.

With help Iwas able to solve it in my post on ubuntu forums

Its a combo of the ati x1250 driver and the wireless NIC.

heres the link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=706928

Now today I downloaded the newest x64 Alpha from the ubuntu main alpha
site.

I didnt expect the live cd to work but it did. I was able to install
correctly and boot normally

However couldnt get wireless to work so I simply...or not so much
went into terminal and typed (while Ihad an internet connection)

sudo atp-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter

It downloaded the driver gave me a message and I installed it . I was
then able to go into the hardware drivers and it prompted me to download
the newest 64 bit version of the right NIC driver. My wireless is
working perfectly now...AND my ati X1250 is in 3d mode too...cool

If you have any questions email or post back in here
