[Bug 74362] Re: usb wireless device zd1211rw 5-2:1.0: zd_chip_control_leds error -19
The bug just manifested on my Linux 2.6.24-11-generic #1 SMP Fri Feb 29 22:08:31 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux It is not solved. O remember having this problem for long time - probably from edgy through feisty, gutsy and now in heron from alpha 1 to last update few hours ago (alpha 6 I suppose). I would suggest 2 things to all suffering from this bug: 1, do not use cable to connect your usb dongle, stick it right into usb. This way I reduced my wifi problems down to random freeze every few hours (similar to original bug text) 2, do not use power button, use ALT SYSRQ keyboard combination: http://fosswire.com/2007/09/08/fix-a-frozen-system-with-the-magic-sysrq-keys/ I suspect this bug could be the combination of hardware and software failure. First something goes wrong with dongle connection, which unregister it from the usb bus. Then zd1211rw (or kernel) does not handle this situation correctly. zd1211 continues to try reading from disconnected dongle and partly hangs the whole usb subsystem. Is there a way to restart usb subsystem without restarting the whole computer? What else could be done to investigate this? Re: [Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes (also non luks) in cryptsetup
/dev/random blocks until it has enough entropy to guarantee randomness. That is probably why wiggling the touchpad gets things going again. If you have /dev/hwrandom, you can use that... Otherwise, you can use /dev/urandom to avoid blocking, but theoretically this could give up some security (since the random generator's internal state could be predictable at boot). -- Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes (also non luks) in cryptsetup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/62751 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 199866] [NEW] Navigating the Main Application Menu using the keyboard does not work fully
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Hi, I find keyboard navigation of the main application menu a bit confusing. After opening it with Alt+F1 and typing `p' it is not the Programming sub menu that opens, as I would have guessed. Instead it is the Places top menu (on my system the one to the right of the Applications menu). When the Places menu is opened focus is given to the top menu item there and I can type other keys to activate sub menus. The same goes for the System top menu. I found this illogical. Shouldn't the focus be at the top item of the Applications menu when I activate it? If not, why, and how am I supposed to activate menu items under it without using the cursor keys? I also tried using `a' to activate the Applications menu but that did not work, nothing happens. This is not consistent with `p' and `s' working for the Places and System menus. If `a' activated the Applications menu the behavior would be okay I guess. Look at the attached image. It is this I see when doing Alt + F1. I am running Ubuntu 7.10. [Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes (also non luks) in cryptsetup
I think your problem is related to using /dev/random in your crypttab swap /dev/sda4 /dev/random swap /dev/random collects entropy from different parts of the system (including mouse/touchpad usage). I'm not sure, but I suspect entropy is not saved at shutdown, so entropy must be collected again at start up. /dev/random will block without enough entropy, and using the touchpad is putting some entropy into the random number system. If you want it to not block, try using /dev/urandom instead. It is not quite as secure, but I think it is more than secure enough for the key for the swap partition. For more on the differences between /dev/random and /dev/urandom, see $ man urandom (On reading that it mentions a way to save entropy on shutdown, though I think you would want to change the place to save it to not in /var/run as that is a filesystem in RAM created by ubuntu on start up). -- Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes (also non luks) in cryptsetup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/62751 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Alright, I may have a solution. I have an acer extensa 4420 - 5237 I originally couldn't get 7.10 installed on the laptop. I didnt expect the live cd to work but it did. I was then able to go into the hardware drivers and it prompted me to download the newest 64 bit version of the right NIC driver.
