[Bug 236528] [NEW] Update of mysql-server_5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.1_all.deb failed

2008-06-01 Thread smarti_j
Public bug reported:

My system is Ubuntu 8.04

The error occured when updating mysql with synaptic today. The full error
message was
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server_5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.1_all.deb: subprocess
pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server-5.0_5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.1_i386.deb:
subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

So I tried to stop mysql server manually with
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop

which returned the following error message
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' (using password:
YES)'

Seems that there is a problem wirth the debian-sys-maint user.

Last week I did a restore of all my mysql databases (including mysql
database) with MySQL Administrator which was backuped on an other
machine. So probably this is the reason for the trouble I have now.

[Bug 230016] Re: [intrepid] Rebuild with perl 5.10

2008-06-01 Thread John Vivirito
There has to be more to it than just depends on perl. irssi depends on perl and
is still not able to be installed due to perl. upgrade output is from intrepid
system that i didnt upgrade perl and freinds since it removes irssi.
The intall output is from intrepid chroot since irssi wasnt installed. It seems
not all perl is done so building against some perl isnt really doing much good
and they will need to be respun once perl is done upgrading. I'm not sure
about the other packages. Here is the output below:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that

that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

2008-06-01 Thread Michael Bienia
The irssi rebuild on i386 was caught in CHROOTWAIT and was given-back
one hour ago. It should hit the archive soon.

The perl packages you mentioned are in hardy:
libperl5.8 (not libperl5.0) is a real package and perlapi-5.8.8 is a virtual
one provided by perl-base.

[Bug 236066] Re: Resume from STR:Network dhcp timeouts

2008-06-01 Thread Yann
Issue shows clearly during suspend... but is not really a suspend issue:
It shows clearly in resume from STR (because a very few seconds are
expected), but it shows in other occasions also: Boot time...

In other word: When an MII management interface is usable to check link
is up (should be the case since almost 5 or 10 years!), is should be
used as a pre-condition for initializing this interface.

[Bug 223780] Re: hdc: status error: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }

2008-06-01 Thread Waldgeist_dI
I am rather confused. Turned on my ubuntu box yersterday to be told
there are some 92 update available. After starting the automatic update
there was a message Couldn't update all packages, this may due to a
pre-release version ... bla bla bla. I was offered a partial
update/upgrade, that didn't work out at all. There was a problem with
the calculation of the available packages. The message stated that this
is possibly a transitory problem, please try again later. Later I tried
again without the partial update/upgrade. This time i wanted to update
only these packages that WERE available.

After that the drive problem reappered!!! Now, however, it's the Plextor
(now connected as master) that won't be shown in Brasero and which is
unavailable!!!

I took my desktop to another place and installed several programs in the
other operating system parition (non unix-based OS). When I came back
home and booted from the new kernel entry in grub, 2.6.24-17-server,

no sound, and the mixer icon in the top menu had the mute white cross.

[Bug 203825] Re: [hardy] GDM hangs on a black screen upon startup

Also, I'd like to add that I've found I only get this problem after
installing fglrx according to these instructions on the Unofficial ATI
Linux Driver Wiki:

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide

Following these instructions is the only way I can get a working fglrx
driver.

However, if I use the regular Ubuntu xorg repositories for fglrx, it
doesn't happen. But then I am left with Mesa OpenGL rendering, which
doesn't work will for me.

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-06-01 Thread brodiepearce
I'm getting these random freezes/lockups with the following hardware:

AMD A64 3200+
DFI motherboard (NVidia NF4 chipset)
SATA + PATA IDE and ATAPI devices
1GB RAM
ATI graphics card
RT61 based wireless NIC

I have wireless disabled at the moment to try and see if that could be
the cause of my crashes specifically, although it's painful because my
ethernet has suddenly decided to kick the bucket for some reason.

Here are my logs (as per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/204996/comments/88):

http://brodiepearce.googlepages.com/interrupts.log

http://brodiepearce.googlepages.com/mtrr.log
http://brodiepearce.googlepages.com/Xorg.0.log
http://brodiepearce.googlepages.com/kern.log

I don't have a kern.0.log logile... hope this helps in some way :/

[Bug 204578] Re: 2.6.24.12 won't boot with em28xx device

2008-06-01 Thread Steven Ellis
Just tried the generic package on Hardy.

I have a HVR 900 USB device.

1. Under 2.6.24-16-generic module loads without issue and analogue
scanning/tuning works. DVB scanning fails without any driver errors.

2. Under 2.6.24-17-generic you need to remove the em28xx.ko module they
have now included and copy the /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/empia/
directory to /lib/modules/2.6.24-17-generic/empia/. The driver appears
to load correctly and analogue works, but still now DVB-T support,

[Bug 220006] Re: Sound Card Detected, but only headphone sound

2008-06-01 Thread Snowball2050
I've come up with a non-ideal fix for my problem. I found out that what
is really going on is that ubuntu is mixing up my headphone jack and
speaker outputs.

With options snd-hda-intel model=auto set in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
When I plug my headphones into the headphone jack, it believes it to be the
speakers and is already outputting sound. Laptop speakers do not function even
when switches in the volume control are toggled. -Thus headphone only sound

With options snd-hda-intel model=arima set in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
When I plug headphones into the headphone jack nothing happens. When I
toggle Headphone switch to 'checked' in volume control, playback can be heard
from laptop speakers! If I uncheck it, I can still get headphone sound from the
Front output jack as this would always be on anyhow.
When I toggle the headphone switch, I can see in alsamixergui the mute
toggles going on and off for the headphone channel. It is not possible to
toggle the mute for the PCM channel. Volume is controlled by using the PCM,
Front, or Master sliders; Headphone sliders are nonexistant.

I can also use options snd-hda-intel model=targa instead of armia to
acheive the same results. as far as I can tell, the other model options
do the same as 'auto'.

Any ideas?

[Bug 236451] [NEW] use i8k causes system lock-up when querying in Dell BIOS A09

2008-06-01 Thread jon partsch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: i8kutils

using the i8k utils. causes a couple seconds of lock-up or non-
responsiveness in the system when querying from the fan/sensors when
using Dell BIOS A09. This is just an incompatibility issue rather than
a bug, I think, because it is also a problem under windows. The i8k
driver controls can still be used in the command line without causing
this problem, or the query interval can be set to a longer period, like
60 sec., to minimize the disruptions. But really, i8kctl and i8kmon
should not be used AT ALL when running Dell BIOS A09. The BIOS itself
does a much better job of controlling the fan by itself. You can
monitor the ACPI temp. yourself if you really want and swicth the fan on
and off, but this is really much more trouble than it is worth, and if
you have i8k enabled and forget to turn the fan on, you will fry your
CPU.

I strongly suggest that anyone running Dell BIOS A09 (i.e. dell X200
laptop) not enable the i8k driver, and not install or use the i8kutils.
Just let the BIOS take care of things and you won't risk damaging your
system.

My system info:

[Bug 71913] Re: [nvidia] X crash in compPaintWindowBackground

2008-06-01 Thread Erik de Castro Lopo
Ok, I now have a recipie that allows me to reproduce this reasonably
reliably.

I've have a HD video in AVI format (Elephant Dreams) and a low res video
(Johnny Cash - Hurt) in FLV format from youtube and I'm playing them
using vlc.

My machine is not quite powerful enough to play the HD video so I get
jumpy and mangle frames along with blue frames. If I then quit the HD
video and play the low res video, X gets this signal 11.

What I need now is info on how to get some good debugging info. Should I
run X under gdb? If so, how do I set this up the maximize the useful
information?

[Bug 234093] Re: Hardy (kernal 2.6.24-16-generic) freezes randomly

2008-06-01 Thread jon partsch
I think I have finally found a workaround to this problem. I am
attaching my edited xorg.conf file for anyone to see. I recommend a
similar configuration for anyone using the intel i830MG graphics in
their laptop, at least until this bug is fixed. The configuration is
based on a source online from someone that installed on a ThinkPad X31.
They have the same chipset as me. Their xorg.conf file can be found at:
http://www.onderka.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/xorg.conf_x30. I
fooled around with this file until I got x.org to work without locking-
up.

I think the real key here was setting option DRI = false

This reduces the richness of the Ubuntu 8.04 platform experience by
eliminating some of the effects, but it works. I hope this bug will be
addressed in the next version of the intel device driver.

Please let me know if anyone has any experiences or advice to share. I
don't really know much about this stuff. I don't really understand what
DRI is or why turning it off may have circumvented this bug. I hope
someone can explain it to me.

Thanks!!

[Bug 236446] [NEW] New message doesn't raise pidgin window

2008-06-01 Thread Sukadev Bhattiprolu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

When waiting for a response from a friend, if I focus on another window like a
browser, the chat window is hidden.
If the friend responds, the pidgin chat window stays hidden. With tabbed
browsing, even if a new friend initiates
a chat, the window stays hidden behind the browser unless I happen to notice
it. I use KDE and generally auto-hide
the taskbar. So I never get notified about new messages or conversations. Is
there a config option that causes pidgin
to raise the window and require me to positively ack each new message by
clicking on the window before the window
disappears into background ?

[Bug 236307] Re: kernel updates get hardy boot stuck in busy box

2008-06-01 Thread Andrew Hart
I also had this problem tonight...

Here's a temporary way for those on a Wubi install to get back to a
working system (if only until the next reboot). Pressing `Escape` right
after choosing Ubuntu from the list of available operating systems but
*before* the Ubuntu splash screen appears will present a list of
kernels, among which should be the -16 kernel. I was able to get back
into a working session (with all settings intact) by selecting the -16
kernel. While this does nothing to solve the underlying issue, it does
restore a sane environment for exploration/testing..

[Bug 223164] Re: Gnome freezes with drag / drop to 2 different windows

2008-06-01 Thread flexion
ok I can reproduce it now (8.04 with all updates applied). it happens
only once per session. if I log out and in again, the error can be
reproduced again.

open two different local folders nautlius. drag a file from the right
window to the left, when the cursor passes over the places list and
touches the networkserver entry, the dragdrop event is stopped and I
get the following error (note: I did not want to place the file on the
network!)

Error while copying test.jpg.
There was an error copying the file into network:///.
(Show more details..)
Operation not supported by backend.

and in another case last week I had a similar error while dragging a
file from the desktop to a local folder in nautilus:

There was an error creating the folder test.
Operation not supported by backend..

[Bug 236461] [NEW] (hardy) using network manager to set domain breaks /etc/hosts

2008-06-01 Thread paunnet
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04

Using the Network option in System Administration to set a domain
breaks /etc/hosts. It changes the file so that the line:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost myhostname

Is changed to two lines:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 myhostname.mydomain

Which breaks the system. You have to manually change the line to read:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost myhostname.mydomain

in order to be able to launch administration applications.

[Bug 234898] Re: unable to change screen resolution....

2008-06-01 Thread Stephen Taylor
The machine is a DECTOP that uses an AMD geode with integrated graphics.
It appears that the xorg.config is not being autoconfigured -- I checked
that both xserver-xorg-video-geode and -amd are loaded and that looks ok
but the xorg.config doesnt appear to recognize the geode at all and just
uses all the generic default settings. Tried the dpkg-recofigure +
restart -- didnt do anything.

AMD Geode GX processor
4 USB 1.1 ports (2 front/2 rear)
support printers, Flash memory, disk drives, and network adapters
LAN interface- external 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
Modem - internal 56 Kbps ITU v.92 Fax/Modem
10GB 3.5 internal hard disk (MINE HAS 180GB)
Stereo headphone/microphone jacks
VGA port - supports resolutions up to 1600x1200 at 85 Hz
Sound - AC'97 audio with stereo in/out jacks
Size - 8.5 x 5.5 x 2.5
Weight - approx. 3 pounds
128MB RAM -- (MINE HAS 500MB)

I tried three different screens: Samsung SyncMaster 150MP, A dell
1707FPf, and a Dell 1702FP -- the samsung works the best but only at
800x600. Both dells dont appear to be recognized either.

Thanks, Steve

[Bug 236460] [NEW] Places sidebar bug when trying to move items

2008-06-01 Thread EneergE
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and I've been having a lot of
trouble with moving existing items in the Places sidebar in Nautilus.

I have the following shortcuts in places:
- Documents
- Downloads
- Pictures
- Videos
- .icons
- Music

Whenever I try to arrange them alphabetically by clicking and dragging
them into place, sometimes the wrong item is moved (and to a completely
random location). For an example, I try to move Music above .icons,
it moves Documents above .icons instead. Very irritating to say the
least. I've experienced this with 3 different complete installs of
hardy heron.

Nautlius version 2.22.2.

[Bug 178391] Re: gspca driver locking up with Logitec Quickcam for Notebooks

2008-06-01 Thread Mark Fraser
Not sure if this is the same bug, but I'm having problems with kernel
2.6.24-17-generic and a Quickcam express plus which lsusb identifies as

ID 046d:092f Logitech, Inc. QuickCam express Plus

Doing a dmesg shows that at 3 points during boot:
/build/buildd/linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-2.6.24/debian/build/build-generic/media/gspcav1/gspca_core.c:
 init isoc: usb_submit_urb(0) ret -28

Also, motion is very jerky in Kopete and Camstream doesn't show anything
apart from an initial image when I start it up.

I had no trouble with this webcam in Kubuntu 7.10.

[Bug 198218] Re: [hardy] After suspend sound isnt working anymore

2008-06-01 Thread Martin Emrich
Same here:

snd-hda-intel
Mainboard:
  Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H Mainboard (AMD RD690 + SB600)
Audio chip:
  [ 712.103980] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC882, trying auto-probe from
BIOS...
  [ 712.115695] ACPI: PCI Interrupt :01:05.2[B] - GSI 19 (level, low) -
IRQ 22

The problem is that one cannot just reload the module, as many apps are using
it, in my case it's always the GNOME mixer-applet, and in most of the cases a
player (rhythmbox, ...).
I'm playing around with some module options now.

[Bug 154164] Re: firefox hangs without certain packages

2008-06-01 Thread John Vivirito
mooglinux, Are you able to test this on a brand new profile by following
the instructions at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs

Gabriel,
What dod you do to fix this? Just install flash and or gnash plugins? Please
lists the steps you used to fix it I have a feeling this is a profile bug.

Why i say that is because you used 2.0 and than started using 3.0 and the
plugins were only installed in 2.0 so you would have to move/copy them or just
have to install them for 3.9 since it is now default in Hardy and the bug i
stated above was fixed a bit ago, on 3.0 side. So please let me know as much as
you can.

Thanks,
John Vivirito.
