[Bug 279688] Re: no X after upgrade with intel controller

2008-10-27 Thread Vladimir Durán
Someone at Ubuntu thought that intel driver was better and i810 was
obsolete, so they dropped i180 hehehe...

Problem is that intel driver has a lot of troubles with i810, being
unmaintained or not it's the only driver that works well with the vast
majority of i810 configurations.

I had a similar problem with GDM that's not working also. See:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/279835

I think I'm going to start some petition asking for the old i810 driver
in Intrepid.

[Bug 267241] Re: [intrepid] X11: no device detected

2008-10-27 Thread Pierre-Yves Landuré
For me, bug corrected.

I've used nvidia-settings to create my xorg.conf file, and it is now
working. I think that when you have 2 vga devices, you only need to give
BusID for the primary one. The BusID of the second one is guessed.

So, i you are encountering problems, Use nvidia-settings to create a
valid xorg.conf file and make sure you have a BusID line iin your
"device" section.

[Bug 279835] Re: Broken Intel Video i810, upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 Beta.

2008-10-27 Thread Vladimir Durán
umm ~01:00a.m, finally found the problem.

Intel driver + DRI + GDM is not working, adding option to not use DRI in
xorg.conf (Option "NoDRI") solves the problem and GDM start
nicely -- for the first time in several days :)

It's more important to me GDM than DRI support (common, I don't expect
to play on a Presario 5000LA), so I can live with it. FPS in glxgears
dropped from 200fps to 40fps, but it's ok.

Weird that only GDM trigger this bug on the intel driver.

[Bug 289762] [NEW] [intrepid] gimp crashes if I disconnect my drawing tablet while it is open

2008-10-27 Thread tommy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

Ubuntu 8.10
gimp 2.6.1-1ubuntu3

Steps to reproduce:
* Hotplug a wacom tablet using the new hotplugging support in intrepid (i.e. no
inputdevice settings in xorg.conf, just relying on the default HAL rules in
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-wacom.fdi)
* Start GIMP and make a new image, draw something with the tablet which should
work fine
* turn off / unplug the tablet
* use your mouse to move the cursor from outside of the GIMP window to inside it

expected > GIMP acts as it would normally if the tablet was not
connected

actual result > GIMP crashes, no error dialog or anything

running GIMP from a terminal gives this message:

The program 'gimp' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device'.
  (Details: serial 314305 error_code 168 request_code 148 minor_code 30)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 269027] Re: No sound from Laptop speakers, but headphones. my solution

I have a brand new HP 6930 notebook, and installed Ubuntu 8.10 current

I see this same problem, and the same solution works. (I don't know if

rebooted.)

Also, on the 6930 there's a hardware mute button next to the volume
controls above the keyboard, and it affects the volume of the builtin

[Bug 250211] Re: Intrepid: WLAN LED blinks incessantly on iwl3945 | iwl4965 laptop

2008-10-27 Thread Thierry Carrez
I think the best approach is to reduce the long off/on cycles that are grabbing
attention, to replace it by a steady "on" LED with an "off" flicker on traffic
(what the wired network LED does).
That's the spirit of Mike Stroyan's patch, above at comment 20.

Those who don't want this "feature" should be able to disable it
completely by following advice on comment 25.

broken.

[Bug 135075] Re: Dapper cciss driver doesn't handle over 2TB devices.

2008-10-27 Thread Niklas Edmundsson
That's funny, since the bug is that the cciss-driver on _dapper_ doesn't
support large devices.

The main issue here is what kind of support we really can expect for the
LTS releases, you should keep in mind that the LTS-releases are the ones
mainly deployed in larger environments where you don't want diverging
installations all over the place. Support for newer hardware is
essential to be able to use an LTS release for a longer period where new
hardware acquisitions are likely to be made.

receive such a file in a malicious e-mail, and it may allow arbitrary

[Bug 277359] Re: MSN group chat makes CPU usage spike

2008-10-27 Thread Hew McLachlan
Pidgin 2.4.1 is what is included with Hardy, and what you experienced
the crash with. Pidgin 2.5 included a major update of the MSN protocol,
which is why it's worth testing with this version. Just a check if the
problem still occurs on Intrepid (pidgin 2.5.2) would be great. If you
are waiting until Intrepid is released, that is fine. If you're not
planning on upgrading, you could try using the version in hardy-
backports (pidgin 2.5.0).

Check if the problem is there on Intrepid first, and worry about getting
a backtrace later. You shouldn't have problems installing anything to
get a backtrace though, as all you need are debug symbols (pidgin-dbg)
and gdb.

Why would it be a kernel issue if you can get it to work with the most
current Intrepid kernel + "manual" setup with wpa_supplicant + DHCP client?
Not quite clear to me.

If it's an incompatibility, NetworkManager is likely the piece to be
fixed, it's a 0.x version and has always had one issue or another...

I haven't got around to moving to Intrepid yet. I think this happened on
a Swiss rental DVD where the "first" language was German and the DVD
also had English (which was my language setting). My guess was that it
was simply selecting the first language. I will have to try renting
again after moving to one of the RCs.

[Bug 289328] Re: gnome-terminal menus have no mnemonics after upgrade to intrepid RC

2008-10-27 Thread Thomas Koster
Hmm.
Since what version has /apps/gnome-terminal/global/use_mnemonics existed?
Previously to the upgrade I never touched these options. Did gnome-terminal
perhaps default to showing mnemonics once upon a time, but recently changed the
default behaviour to hide mnemonics, and my system has been going on the
default the whole time?

I originally filed this bug thinking the mnemonics were lost in
translation between 2.22 and 2.24, because I didn't know they could be
turned off at all until I found that setting. If I knew beforehand that
this was not the case, I probably wouldn't have bothered with a bug. No
biggie if this gets marked as invalid.

Martin Pool, thanks for the "f-spot -v" hint, that works indeed.

Anyway, eog is the default image viewer, so the experience with watching

[Bug 288148] Re: Disabling ath5k in 2.6.27

2008-10-27 Thread Loïc Minier
Please people, venting your frustation here doesn't help anyone.

1) this was discussed publicly (ubuntu-devel and kernel-team lists)
2) this was enabled and removed within a development cycle
3) there are workarounds (madwifi, lbm)

It's too late for the 8.10 release now; let's focus on:
- improving the next release
- fixing the most severe regressions via SRUs

If your card doesn't work with lbm's ath5k and it used to work with
older ath5k, please open a new bug report with lspci -vvnn >lspci.txt,
and dmesg output of failing and succeeding boots with the version of the
packages you used in both cases.

2008-10-27 Thread Fabio Pedretti
** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 262066
CPU throttled to 12% with kernel 2.6.27

** Description changed:

  In 2.6.27-rc9 I noticed a fix/blacklist (commit
e84956f92a846246b09b34f2a728329c386d250f) for two ATI laptop that set thermal
trip points to insanely low values.
I am using current Ubuntu LiveCD which ships kernel 2.6.27-6.9 and I noticed
a similar problem on my HP Compaq 6715s (with latest BIOS F.0D 08/20/2008).

Steps to reproduce: run current LiveCD (downloaded from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/). The system is really slow, the
fan is always active, but ouput fresh air.

If can be useful, running the following command as found here:
  http://marc.info/?l=linux-acpi&m=121396447214047&w=4
  I get:
  $ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ*/trip_points
  critical (S5): 105 C
  passive: 16 C: tc1=1 tc2=2 tsp=100 devices=C000 C001

  active[2]: 16 C: devices=C39D
  active[3]: 16 C: devices=C39E

Maybe it should blacklisted also this hardware?

+ Apparently the patch is available at

[Bug 139806] Re: Rhythmbox should allow you to sync part of the library with an SD card

...but is the bug about putting music on an SD card through rhythmbox,
or an intelligent iTunes-style synchronization feature that works for
all media devices? The bug title and description point to the former,
which is already possible in rhythmbox. All the subsequent comments
seem to have diverged from the original point.

[Bug 289769] Re: VMBuilder.exception

2008-10-27 Thread Nick Barcet
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and help us make Ubuntu better.
It seems however that the problem you are encountering is coming from the
release file from apt-cache, which is generally due to a network or mirror
problem and there is not much to do in vmbuilder to fix this. I am therefore
marking this bug as invalid for vmbuilder.
If you think that the problem might be coming from apt-cache, feel free to
reopen a new task for this bug for apt-cache (using "also affect distribution"
in Launchpad).

[Bug 217107] Re: Use ttf-liberation for default font

2008-10-27 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas

> http://watteimdocht.de/jan-nik/liberation/ (see the greek letters in the
> gedit screenshots)

That screenshot isn't an evidence because of 2 reasons:

1. All gnome and majority of other modern X applications uses fonconfig library
and this library automatically replaces missing characters from other fonts -
for example you can see Russian and other letters when choose any font if there
are at least one similar font with Russian letters (for example DejaVu) in your
system. You can test if by simply pasting text bellow (with Russian and few
Lithuanian letter) and choose any font (eg. Courier 10 Pitch doesn't contain
Russian and Lithuanian letters) in gedit or OpenOffice:
„Я иду домои а вы - нет Ąžuolėlį šienąvę“

2. Existence of Greek letters isn't enough for default font. DejaVu
fonts contains thousands of letters for majority of European and Asian
countries, more about coverage of various characters in DejaVu fonts you
can read at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DejaVu_fonts and
http://dejavu.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/dejavu/tags/version_2_26
/dejavu-fonts/langcover.txt

So, I still think, that Liberation fonts doesn't contain characters for popular
languages, and, because of this, aren't suitable as default Ubuntu fonts. For
example /etc/defoma/hints/ttf-liberation.hints file from ttf-liberation package
has specifies, that Liberation fonts covers only ISO8859-1 Charset :(
You can compare with the file from ttf-dejavu-core package
(/etc/defoma/hints/ttf-dejavu-core.hints ) - as you see DejaVu fonts covers
several ISO8859-X Charsets and most importantly - Unicode Charset ISO10646-1

If you have real evidence, that Liberation fonts contains at least major
European and Asian Languages like Polish, Greek, Russian, Lithuanian,
Latvian, Byelorussian, Czech, etc. and covers big part of Unicode
Charset ISO10646-1 then please write an URL to the public source of such
information (like this file
http://dejavu.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/dejavu/tags/version_2_26
/dejavu-fonts/langcover.txt in DejaVu fonts case) and report a bug
against ttf-liberation package to include missing charsets in ttf-
liberation.hints file.

[Bug 282207] Re: [Sierra] NM 0.7 does not set APN for AT&T 3G connection

2008-10-27 Thread J.A. Watson
A small variation of the work-around works with non-branded cards, such
as the Swisscom Unlimited Data card, also. If you can set up a working
wvdial.conf file, and use wvdial to connect the card once, then remove
everything except *99# from the Network Manager configuration as
described above, the Swisscom card will then connect through Network
Manager.
