[Bug 409366] Re: Secondary groups not working with NFS

2009-12-28 Thread JB
I am having a similar problem, which has not been solved by the removal
of --manage-gids in /etc/default/nfs-kernel-server of the Karmic
client PC. I did a sudo /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server restart on the
Karmic client, though it is irrelevant, I believe.

I am mounting a user directory from a Fedora7 PC (linux0) NFS server.
On the client (Ubuntu Karmic) PC a user (js) who also belongs to the
group 'family tries to read file /home/as/MyFiles/Calendar.ics
mounted from linux0 with the permissions -rw-r- 1 as family.
This is a problem ONLY in a client PC running Ubuntu Karmic 9.10. It
works fine on any other PC running any other version of Ubuntu. I have
tested this on several Ubuntu PCs using Karmic, Hardy, Jaunty etc.

The user's id is:
uid=1001(js) gid=1001(js)
groups=1001(js),4(adm),20(dialout),21(fax),24(cdrom),26(tape),29(audio),30(dip),44(video),46(plugdev),103(fuse),104(lpadmin),112(netdev),115(admin),120(sambashare),1999(family),1100(parents)

When I try less /home/as/MyFiles/Calendar.ics on a PC running Karmic
I get Permission denied.

I believe that Karmic still has a bug.

2009-12-28 Thread MXIIA
I do not believe it is the sound card, as myself and many friends that
use Ubuntu 9.10 report this same problem.

When I open Rhythmbox first, once a song is finished, the java applet
takes sound over.

** Summary changed:

- if i have used sound, lets say on a java applet online...and i close that and
launch a media player like totem,i get no sound from totem,i have to restart my
computer
+ If I have used sound, for example on a Java applet online...and I close that

Thank you for taking the time to make Xubuntu better. Since what you
submitted is not really a bug, or a problem, but rather an idea to
improve Xubuntu, I am marking it as a wishlist item so it does not get

occasionally work this if there is time permitting.

[Bug 201306] Re: Asus WL-167g - WLAN discconnects after several minutes from the AP

2009-12-28 Thread mehturt
I am having a similar (the same?) problem with Ubuntu 9.10 and Asus WL-167G.
The device works out-of-the-box, I am able to connect to my WPA2 encrypted
network. The connection is fine for a few minutes, then problems appear. I am
not really being disconnected, but larger packets (e.g. 1000 bytes) are not
going thru, or maybe every 20th packet goes thru - I am testing this with ping
-s ..., I am pinging my DSL modem. There is nothing interesting in the syslog.
Restarting network-manager solves the problem, but it reappears after a few
minutes.

[Bug 419599] Re: show alert message after clicking on exe file

2009-12-28 Thread Vish
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

For further information about papercuts criteria, please read

Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
 Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

Hardware is HP Pavilion DV1000 series (specific DV1588EA)

Battery monitor when running on battery reports percentage of battery
remaining correctly, but the corresponding remaining time is often
fabulously wrong (and can swing between e.g a few minutes to tens of hours
in the blink of an eye). /* What I wouldn't give for batteries that can last
 14 hours between charges... */

It looks for all the world like the underlying values are being held in
storage classes which are too small or where value-wrapping is not being
 handled quite right...

BTW UBUNTU is fantastic; I'm a convert! Keep up the good work!

[Bug 501193] [NEW] Acer Aspire 3000 with no screen response after upgrade Ubuntu

[Bug 501192] [NEW] ignores x-terminal-emulator

2009-12-28 Thread Francois-Denis Gonthier
Public bug reported:

The GIO sublibrary in GLib has a function called
prepend_terminal_to_vector, which prepare a command line by prepending
it with a valid X terminal name before executing it.

The function as distributed in Glib first search for gnome-terminal before
trying several well-known terminal application.
I believe this is not acceptable in a distribution like Ubuntu, which supports
the x-terminal-emulator alternative to set the preferred terminal to the user.
As it is right now, gnome-panel simply ignores the chosen x-terminal-emulator
as well as the GNOME preferred terminal application (and that is another bug!)

I don't know any other application which expose this bug other than
gnome-panel. Glib applications in Ubuntu should default to x-terminal-
emulator before trying any other kind of terminal emulator.

[Bug 447747] Re: karmic - mountall fails to mount filesystem on boot

2009-12-28 Thread Vpo
I'm having the same problem when I updated from 9.04 to 9.10.

I'm fairly new to linux/ubuntu so I don't know how I'm supposed to
correct the kernel to 2.6.31? I tried many of the suggestions posted
here and related posts but unable to get through them without errors.

I tried what itsjareds suggested in post #28 but it displayed an error
when upgrading. I also tried what Mark Jackson Pulver suggested in
this post #4 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/128313) but I
didn't work and I tried to locate the 2.6.31 kernel package but don't
know the exact name I should input.

I've burned a recovery disk and working from there but have no idea how
to move forward.

During the GUI upgrade process, I kept the menu.lst rather than
replacing it with the new one and I think that's where the problems lie.
I've attached a screenshot of the error (which is similar to the ones
posted above).

I'm just not sure of the actual command lines/steps I need to take to
fix this.

Any help with step-by-step instructions for a newbie would be great!
Thanks!

After a reboot, it took a very long time to repeat.

After several hours, (read happy kids), the slow drag with trail
repeated.

Xorg is using 21.1% of memory and it takes tens of minutes to repeat,
not hours!

After exiting Freecell, the xorg memory use stays over 20%.

So, it appears there is a memory leak, somewhere.

What can I do to help with this?

[Bug 501197] [NEW] ignore preferred terminal

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Application in the Applications menu always start in gnome-terminal even
if the preferred terminal has been changed to anything else in the
Preferred Applications screen of GNOME configuration.

This is closely related to bug 501192 which I just posted, but gnome-
panel shouldn't prefer the GNOME setting over the x-terminal-emulator as
the GNOME option and the x-terminal-emulator link are not automatically
bound together.

Re: [Bug 469376] Re: USB device insertion causes total system lockup on Ubuntu 9.10

2009-12-28 Thread phickel
I reported this problem quite some time ago, and considering it causes a
total system lockup, I am surprised I cannot seem get anyone interested
to actually do anything to get this fixed, but I have now confirmed what
is actually happening.

In a nutshell, when the USB subsystem detects the Quicksilver modem, it
hands off to the Gnome Network Manager, which in turn hands off to the
new Gnome Modem Manager. The Gnome Modem Manager then grabs the
ttyHS* ports even though it has no idea how to handle the Quicksilver
ttyHS* devices correctly and proceeds to lock up the entire computer in
it's persistant efforts to do exactly the wrong thing.

I have not found a way to tell Gnome Network Manager and/or it's partner
in this abuse Gnome Modem Manager to back off and do not touch the
Quicksilver ttyHS* devices because they obviously do not know how to
handle and control these devices correctly.

A drakonian approach is to simply completely uninstall Gnome Network
Manager and Gnome Modem Manager. However this also eliminates the
good things they do for wired and wifi connections. Unfortunately I
have not yet found a better way to address this issue.

[Bug 447725] Re: grub nice 'recordfail' feature doesn't work for hibernation

2009-12-28 Thread Mike Clark
I am having the same bug, and recordfail=1 even if concurrency=none for
me. If I set recordfail=0 and restart grub works.. once. The next time
I restart it goes back to not using a timeout. I should note that I
never changed the concurrency setting at any time, it was always =none
for me.

[Bug 501200] [NEW] gspca communication error with hercules classic link webcam (06f8:3009)

2009-12-28 Thread Aktawa
Public bug reported:

Using the information from Bug #453404, I patched the source files on
kubuntu 9.04 (linux-source-2.6.31) and compiled the module against the
headers linux-headers-2.6.31-16. After the patch, the driver module was
loaded (gspca_main, gspca_pac7311) and the device /dev/vide0 appeared.

When this device is accessed (via webcam, cheese, cat /dev/video0) gspca stops
the read-out with the error message
gspca: set alt 0 err -71

The error appears also after compiling the modules from the stable upstream
kernel (2.6.31.9), a upstream image and
after updating to 10.04 (development) with kernel 2.6.32-9-generic.

[Bug 501201] [NEW] Trouble with subtitles and Start playing files from last position

2009-12-28 Thread Brews
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

This is not a bug in the program's function, but rather an odd way for it to
function:
I have Start playing files from last position checked in the Preferences
menu.

I load a video file with subtitles and let it play for some time, then
close Rhythmbox.

Double-clicking the same file again will start the video file playback
as expected, but without subtitles.

Loading the subtitles causes the file to restart playback from the
beginning of the file.

So, this would defeat the purpose of having my file start from the last played
position. I think this could be more user friendly in a few possible ways:
1) have subtitle files load automatically when Start playing files from last
position is selected.
2) when loading subtitles, have the film resume from its original position,
rather than restarting the file.

[Bug 474860] Re: Tesco.com website crashes Firefox on logout

2009-12-28 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can
become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try
this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not
need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want
to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one
until you find the problematic one.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:
firefox -ProfileManager

[Bug 463780] Re: no support for steelseries mouse

2009-12-28 Thread Vish
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

- This is a hardware specific problem , and not a papercut
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as Invalid only in the
papercuts project.

[Bug 501203] [NEW] No sound from Radeon HD 4650 - HDMI Output

2009-12-28 Thread Tito
Public bug reported:

This bug has been automatically assigned to the alsa-driver package
based on instruction provided in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems for creating a bug but
not sure if it is an alsa-driver issue.

This is a fresh install of 9.10 on an HP Slimline s3100e PC with a HD
Radeon 4650 card. I can get video out of HDMI with no problem but I can
not get audio out of HDMI.

aplay -L returns the following:
--
hdmi:CARD=HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI, ATI HDMI
HDMI Audio Output
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
pulse
Playback/recording through the PulseAudio sound server
--

However, I noticed in other peoples posting that first line of the the
aplay -L output normally has a DEV=0 at the end. My output does not.
Don't know if this is a problem.

aplay -l (lower case L) shows the following:
---
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Also, alsamixer screen displays the following:
---
Card: HDA ATI HDMI │
│ Chip: ATI R6xx HDMI │
│ View: [Playback] Capture All│

As you can see it is unmuted however, i can not increase the volume
here. It stays at 00.

Some other posting I have seen is creating a file called /etc/asound.conf and
added the following lines:
pcm.!default hdmi:HDMI
pcm.iec958 hdmi:HDMI

Tried it (even rebooted) and it didn't work.

And yet another solution was to created a file called
/etc/modprobe.d/hda_intel.conf and add the following line:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto probe_mask=1

This also did not work (even after reboot).

I'm seriously at a loss here and do not know what else to do. I'm fairly new
to linux (disclaimer).
I have not downloaded any of the proprietary drivers for this card.
I would prefer to stay away from that but if it's the only option then I would
give it a go.

[Bug 484444] Re: Sound Juicer gives Segmentation error on startup in Karmic

2009-12-28 Thread stlubuntu
This bug appears to be a duplicate to # 479044. Both bugs keep getting
closed where the developers ask the poster to enable apport for an
additional bug. I have enable apport but no additional bug appears to
be filed but I do have crash reports now.

Would you please look into this bug as unless it is fixed it will likely
remain for Lucid?

On both bugs the users are attempting to provide reports and
information. I know crash reports are needed so please accept them and
take a look instead of requesting another duplicate bug be files via
apport.

[Bug 474990] Re: [Hewlett-Packard Presario R4000 (PX353UA#ABA)] suspend/resume failure

2009-12-28 Thread David Tombs
The issue is not always reproducible, seems arbitrary.

To clarify, reproduction steps:

1) Boot system to login screen.
2) Suspend.
3) Resume.
4) If system is not hung, go back to (2).

Eventually it will hang on a blank screen, after which nothing helps.
SysRq keys don't work, machine doesn't respond to ping.

[Bug 501206] [NEW] xserver-xorg-input-wacom conflicts with xserver-xorg-core

2009-12-28 Thread Taylor Ripps L-Wren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wacom-tools

I upgraded to Lucid Alpha, and I unfortunately discovered that my wacom
graphire3 doesn't work properly. Whenever I click using the pen, the mouse
stops working when I hover over the tablet. I have to move the pen a good
distance away from the tablet before it starts working again. Looking into it,
it seems that wacom-tools and xserver-xorg-input-wacom weren't installed and
couldn't be installed because of some kind of conflict with xserver-xorg-core.
Since I have carpal tunnel, and using a normal mouse for a long period time
begins to cause a good deal of pain, it is very important that I get my
graphire3 working soon.

[Bug 501205] [NEW] mod_musicindex sends files to FireFox named _vXfgRuj.m3u.part, and won't play in some players

2009-12-28 Thread glenstewart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libapache-mod-musicindex

The .part suffix is wrong. The file should only be named _vXfgRuj.m3u
(by mod_musicindex), and then it will work fine.

This should be fixed in the code.

[Bug 501204] [NEW] sudo syntax error in /etc/sudoers due to #-- comment

2009-12-28 Thread Ariel Faigon
Public bug reported:

result: sudo won't work anymore.

/etc/sudoers: syntax error near line 9
/etc/sudoers: syntax error near line 27
sudo: parse error in /etc/sudoers near line 9

[Bug 364984] Re: couldn't install java docs

2009-12-28 Thread ToFue
It would be fine to un-confirm; How would I do that?
Also, in future, are there fundamental logs that I can post with bug reports at
the time of bug?

As far as a 'precise' description, I can make a general attempt, but it
was so long ago that I don't think it would be accurte to the point of
my own memory 'filling' in blanks.. However, my issue had to do with
incoming data through network, not about package installation itself,
but that it had to download to do so and would (seemingly radomly)
crash. This particular error was the only thing that would catch to
report. At first it seemed that any D/L bundles around 600-900mbytes or
video streams for 20+ mins would incur the crash ( crash = system
freeze/unresponsiveness ), then it began doing so on smaller package
installs such as what included the sun-java6-doc*. I suspected
hardware, so I stripped all extra hardware; i.e. 4x 2G memory down to
one 2G stick at a time, rotating them each (same) failure, stripped
swapped the two video cards, turned off all unessessary periphrials in
BIOS, as well as using different nics, All with stress testing.. crash
always came back in each config, while network was actively d/l'ing.
Could be mobo/cpu.. The Only way it stopped was either to go back to
Ubuntu Studio 8.10 or use ubuntu 9.04.

I assume the bug report also reports the flavor of ubuntu, but if not I
first Upgraded from studio 8.10 to studio 9.04 with no probs, except
from what I did to it, and needed to do a clean install to studio 9.04,
which is where this issue presented itself..

All in all, If the moderator feels that it's nessessary to null this report,
feel free to do so- I moved on from this..
But thank you all for addressing this post!

[Bug 360884] Re: sound-juicer 2.26.0 crashes on start

2009-12-28 Thread stlubuntu
This may have been fixed in 2.26.1 but it sure appears to be back in

2.28.2 Brasero in Ubuntu 9.10 (64-bit).

Crash report is attached.

What can I do for a workaround? This is also happening in Rhythmbox,
Sound-juicer, and Nautilus, just after insertion of an audio CD.

Thanks.

[Bug 347045] Re: Totem won't autoplay DVD

2009-12-28 Thread NetMc
I finally found what causes the Could not open location; you might not
have permission to open the file when auto playing a DVD. In XFCE, go
to the Removable Drives and Media setting (Applications, Settings) and
then on the multimedia tab, change the default command for Video
CDs/DVDs from totem dvd:/ to totem dvd://

The last slash is missing for some reason. Once I added the second / to
the command, totem worked flawlessly when auto playing a DVD. I am
using totem with the gstreamer backend and not xine.

I realize that this has absolutely nothing to do with totem, but it is
still present in Xubuntu 9.10, and this bug report was high on the
google search results.
