[Bug 1172961] Re: update-binfmt for Jar files also impacts Office 2007 and Zip files
I thought so too Francois, but after some research it looks like solution #1 won't solve the problem: if a given format is registered in binfmts, and its magic or extension matches, it *will* be considered an executable *even* if all its detectors fail! A +x'ed zip or docx will still fail, the error message will be different, from invalid file (bad magic number): Exec format error to run-detectors: unable to find an interpreter for file So, while solution #1 is an improvement for java, for preventing it to load 'java -jar file.docx', it would not solve this bug. We are left with solution #2 (change binfmt from 'PK\...' magic to 'jar' extension) and #3 (do not install a binfmt at all). #2 seems reasonable, its only obvious (bit minor) drawback is requiring .jar files to be actually named '*.jar' There is also another viable approach: #3, but instead of not installing the binfmt, install and *disable* it by default. This can be done with: sudo --update-binfmts --disable jar So the whole infrastructure would still be there for those who wanted it (preferably combined with #1), and this feature could be properly documented in java's documentation, explaining the consequences of enabling jar, and discussing alternatives. There can even be 2 binfmts, jar-extension and jar-magic, both disabled but easy to enable with a single command. User can make a well informed decision and choose either magic, extension or none. Java fans would be 1 command away from re-enabling it, and the Ubuntu target user would happily open zip and docx files in wine apps with no errors or security risks. Even with binfmt disabled, jar can still be directly executed (double- click in Nautilus, xdg-open, etc) via desktop associations. Which works out of the box by the way. Win-win for me. [Bug 53962] Re: Nautilus-cd-burner and Brasero are unable to blank DVD-RW
Hi, i noticed that the properties of DVD-RW are misrepresented in some of the posts. DVD-RW can assume two states: sequential and overwritable. The sequential state behaves much like CD-R or DVD-R. The medium has an own table-of-content where it records the track boundaries of one or more burn sessions. DVD-RW in sequential state have to be blanked before they can be re-used from scratch. There are two blanking strategies: fast and full. Fast blanking of DVD-RW causes the medium to be unable of the incremental write type. Only a single track and session can be written in DAO mode. Full blanking lasts as long as writing full DVD of data. It has the benefit, though, to bring the medium into the same state as a virgin DVD-R, which can accept more than one burn session and does not necessarily need to know the size of the session in advance. In the overwritable state, a DVD-RW resembles DVD+RW or DVD-RAM. It has no own table-of-content, and only one track which can be read and written in random access mode with 32 KiB granularity. Overwritable DVD-RW do not need blanking for being re-used from scratch. One may write 64 KiB of zeros to their start in order to invalidate an existing ISO 9660 filesystem, which would cause programs like growisofs or xorriso to append the new data rather than to start writing a completely new ISO 9660 filesystem. DVD-RW are sold in blank sequential state. One may bring a sequential DVD-RW into overwritable state by e.g: dvd+rw-format -force /dev/... One may bring an overwritable DVD-RW or a non-blank sequential DVD-RW into blank sequential state by e.g.: dvd+rw-format -blank=full /dev/... Only capable of DAO writing is the result of dvd+rw-format -blank=fast /dev/... It depends on the state of the medium and on deliberate decisions of the burn frontend program or its user, whether a DVD-RW gets blanked or formatted. With DVD+RW (which have sneaked into this bug report too) there is no decision to be done by the frontend. The backend must know about the peculiarities of DVD+RW background formatting and issue the necessary FORMAT commands if needed. This is the reason why burn programs on DVD+RW sometimes report formatting for a few seconds before they start to write. Have a nice day :) Thomas -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/53962 Title: Nautilus-cd-burner and Brasero are unable to blank DVD-RW To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus-cd-burner/+bug/53962/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

So we ought to find out which widget it is easiest way would be to backup .kde/share/config/plasma* and then keep removing widgets until the load turns normal. should that not yield results you can also attach aforementioned files to the bug report and completely remove them, then restart plasma- desktop to see if it is a widget problem at all. also ls -l ~/.kde/share/apps/plasma/plasmoids/ would be good to see. ** Changed in: kde-workspace (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1173521 Title: plasma-desktop burning 90-100% of a cpu (after update to raring) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde-workspace/+bug/1173521/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1160771] Re: Non-existent theme configured after upgrade
That's likely happening when you manually set the theme at some point in the past. This could probably be handled nicer (using excessive amounts of config juggling), but given that KDM is not used by default and is going away upstream in the long run there is no point in pursuing this matter. [Bug 604717] Re: Please convert init script to upstart
This debdiff adds an upstart job for ntp. Upstart job does the same thing SysV script does. In addition, it adds two features that are common requirement in production: 1) does one off sync before starting ntpd in foreground - off by default 2) syncs hardware clock after the one off sync - off by default Many services, OpenStack's nova comes to mind, require time to be synced, rather ntpd started. By doing one off sync before starting ntpd, system will have correct time before nova-* services start. Nova service then needs to depend on started ntpd. Hardware clock sync might be an overkill, but, IMHO, doing it right after we synced the OS time seems the best place to do it. ** Patch added: ntp-final.debdiff https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/604717/+attachment/3662421/+files/ntp-final.debdiff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/604717 Title: Please convert init script to upstart To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/604717/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1175557] [NEW] adt-run fulfills dependencies with --built-tree contrary to the manpage
Public bug reported: adt-run(1) says: --built-tree directory Specifies that tests from the built source tree directory should be run. Note that the packages that would normally be installed as a result of @ in the tests' Depends field (which includes the case where the Depends field is not specified) are not installed. The caller must explicitly instruct adt-run to install any relevant packages. On the other hand, when I run: adt-run --built-tree facter-1.6.10 --- adt-virt-schroot saucy-amd64 then it fulfils the facter test dependency from the archive. I expected it not to fulfil the dependency and thus for my test to fail. This is a problem for me because I am trying to test my new dep8 test for facter to prevent a recurrence of bug 1173265. In order to test my test, I'm trying to run my new test against a locally rebuilt deb of facter 1.6.9-2ubuntu1 to verify that it correctly detects the failure case. So I ran: adt-run --binaries-fortests=install --binary facter_1.6.9-2ubuntu1_all.deb --built-tree facter-1.6.10 --- adt-virt- schroot saucy-amd64 (facter_1.6.9-2ubuntu1_all.deb is my locally rebuilt version, and factor-1.6.10 is a directory that contains my newest yet-to-upload merge of facter that includes a new smoke test) I expected this to fulfill the facter dependency in my test from the deb, rather than from the archive. But adt-run appeared to ignore this and fulfill it from the archive instead, causing the test run to pass, instead of running it from my local .deb and causing the test to fail. I'm not sure if I'm calling adt-run correctly here, but I am confused by the documentation. So I reduced the problem and found behaviour that directly contracts the manpage, as above. This bug is for the first case, where --built-tree fulfils dependencies in direct contradiction of the documentation. [Bug 1175557] Re: adt-run fulfills dependencies with --built-tree contrary to the manpage
failure-case.log contains the output of adt-run --built-tree facter-1.6.10 --- adt-virt-schroot saucy-amd64. Note that apt-get downloaded facter from the archive. From the manpage, I expect this not to happen. In case it's relevant, my facter-1.6.10 is actually an unbuilt tree. But my test doesn't need the tree to be built, so I expected it to be passed to the test unchanged. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1175557 Title: adt-run fulfills dependencies with --built-tree contrary to the manpage To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/autopkgtest/+bug/1175557/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1094496] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon leaks memory
I've finally been able to test the new version on both my home machine and the work machine that originally showed the problem. Results seem positive: memory usage appears normal and doesn't grow after a full day of running. directly after starting: zelle24481 0.1 0.0 216800 4304 ?SLl 15:54 0:00 /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon --daemonize --login 30 minutes and some use later: zelle24481 0.0 0.0 364264 4432 ?SLl 15:54 0:00 /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon --daemonize --login The next day (approx. 24 hours): zelle24481 0.0 0.0 437996 4104 ?SLl May01 0:00 /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon --daemonize --login There doesn't appear to be a memory leak, however the virtual memory allocation shown by ps is still significant with 440 Mb. I see this with lots of programs on 64 bit ubuntu, though, so that may be another problem altogether. Note that I have disabled some of the xdg services in the mean time, which may prevent me from seeing the problem return. I've disabled the following services (XFCE, located in ~/.config/autostart): gnome-keyring-gpg.desktop gnome-keyring-secrets.desktop gnome-keyring-pkcs11.desktop gnome-keyring-ssh.desktop Instead, I now only start gnome-keyring once with the following options: gnome-keyring-daemon --start --components=pkcs11,secrets,ssh,gpg I'm not sure if this is relevant for the bug(fix), but with that last commandline everything seems to work fine now. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1094496 Title: gnome-keyring-daemon leaks memory To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-keyring/+bug/1094496/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1110139] Re: Broadcom BCM4313 wireless card driver not working
This bug affects me during the installation. OS Info: Linux lubuntu 3.8.0-19-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 17 18:19:42 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux - live session with Lubuntu 13.04 raring i386 iso The problem appears when I want to connect to my Wi-Fi network during the installation. The connection works with brcmsmac driver which was automatically loaded during boot, but in the next installation step system for no reason tries to change it to the other one (bcmwl?). I made a 13.04 live USB, updated it which means in my case 32 bit 3.0.19. Booted from this, the Dragonfly worked fine. However, the installed Ubuntu currently uses the mainline kernel 3.8.8 and the dragonfly doesn't work as described here. 3.0.19 isn't an option on this machine since it is a media PC, and 3.0.19 has a bug which means no HDMI audio, so I personally need to wait until the HDMI bug is fixed before I go back to Ubuntu kernels. Possibly I have a configuration problem, and the issue is not kernel related. In which case, I will reinstall. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1136110 Title: USB Audio Codec choppy playback To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1136110/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
