It's what "journal+console" does, yes -- it's similar to "tee".

[Bug 418242] Re: Incorrect call to output plugins (with persistent error message) on copy

2016-09-19 Thread Antoni
I also experience this nasty bug. It is present for many years now. Up to
Ubuntu 16.04 I used the script from comment #37
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/418242/comments/37
but now it stopped working. Hence I updated this shell script following the
remarks in comment #74
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/418242/comments/74
It is workaround, but for me it works perfectly. My Inkscape version is
0.91r13725 on Ubuntu 16.04. I hope it will help some of you.
In general it is much better to manually edit the files which generate these
nasty errors as is explained in comment #74, but in my case I need to do this
on more then 10 different desktops, hence the script is much more useful.

[Bug 1624967] Re: $TERM is not set for /etc/rc.local

2016-09-19 Thread Martin Pitt
$TERM only gets set for units which have Standard{Output,Error}=tty. By
default services only have a stdout/err pipe to the journal, and rc-
local.service uses journal+console which is still a pipe. So it would be
actively wrong to set $TERM there as it is not actually a terminal. (See
man systemd.exec).

You can create your own unit with Standard{Output,Error}=tty and a
setterm call, of course.

[Bug 1624394] Re: mimedefang: md-mx-ctrl reread does not work

2016-09-19 Thread Marcus Schopen
I can confirm Richard's patch. I rebuilt a package and since then reread
works very well. A good idea might be to place a script in
/etc/mail/spamassassin/sa-update-hooks.d to automatically reread
mimedefang after sa-update. I guess most users forget a reread after sa-
update therefore new updates never catch until reboot or manual
mimedefang restart.

[Bug 1624317] Re: systemd-resolved breaks VPN with split-horizon DNS

2016-09-19 Thread Martin Pitt
The upstream issue actually applies to both. IMHO, if you restrict a DNS
server to a particular list of domains it should be used *exactly* for
the given domains (only). Querying it for other domains is a privacy
leak, and querying other name servers for those domains is most probably
going to fail anyway and thus a waste.

> Also, here I am using NetworkManager, not systemd-networkd.

That's unrelated, as that is about resolving DNS names, not bringing up
the network.

So, this does match the upstream issue, setting to triaged.

[Bug 1624836] Re: ubuntu-bug refuses to file upgrade bug, thinks it's a dupe from 2012

2016-09-19 Thread Brian Murray
apport checks for a bug pattern before filing a bug report, in the case
of the bug which you were reporting it matched the bug pattern for bug
996916.  That pattern looks like:

https://launchpad.net/bugs/996916;>
^(ubuntu-release-upgrader-core |update-manager)
blacklist expr
'\^postgresql-.*\[0-9\]\\.\[0-9\].*' matches

>From the bugs I'd seen before most of them failed to calculate the
upgrade, however in your log file (Mainlog.txt) the message appears
during the obsolete package check.

2016-09-18 12:53:10,503 DEBUG Start checking for obsolete pkgs
2016-09-18 12:53:18,126 DEBUG blacklist expr 'update-manager-core' matches
'update-manager-core'
2016-09-18 12:53:18,127 DEBUG skipping 'update-manager-core' (in
removalBlacklist)
2016-09-18 12:53:18,127 DEBUG 'update-manager-core' scheduled for remove but
not safe to remove, skipping
2016-09-18 12:53:23,737 DEBUG blacklist expr 'update-manager-core' matches
'update-manager-core'
2016-09-18 12:53:23,737 DEBUG package 'python3-distupgrade' has unwanted
removals, skipping
2016-09-18 12:53:25,652 DEBUG 'python3-distupgrade' scheduled for remove but
not safe to remove, skipping
2016-09-18 12:53:25,980 DEBUG blacklist expr '^postgresql-.*[0-9]\.[0-9].*'
matches 'postgresql-9.3'
2016-09-18 12:53:25,980 DEBUG skipping 'postgresql-9.3' (in removalBlacklist)
2016-09-18 12:53:25,980 DEBUG 'postgresql-9.3' scheduled for remove but not
safe to remove, skipping

The bug pattern should be modified so that it only matches bugs where
the message appears before upgrading.

[Bug 1285444] Re: Login Successful, Desktop Never Loads

2016-09-19 Thread Fullbuffer
Moving the ~/.cache directory out of the way and restarting has me back
up and running again.

The UI is completely reset, but I have title bars, the launcher, and
other widgets as expected so that I can use my desktop again.

mv ~/.cache ~/.cache-NOGOOD
sudo reboot

Maybe that will work for someone else.

Cheers,
  BB

[Bug 1613353] Re: grub2 crashes when installing ubuntu LTS 16.04

2016-09-19 Thread Phillip Susi
Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted
the 16.04 installer in EFI mode. A warning message prompted you that
this could be a problem and recommended performing a bios mode install
instead, but you chose not to. You either need to perform the bios mode
install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system
partition to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you
choose the "use entire disk" guided install option.

[Bug 1613260] Re: update-grub (grub-mkconfig) includes all kernels in boot, regardless whether version is in /lib/modules

It is entirely possible to build a kernel without modules and it will
run just fine without anything in /lib/modules, so this change is not
appropriate.

[Bug 1579278] Re: Keep powersave CPU frequency scaling governor for CPUs that support intel_pstate

2016-09-19 Thread Doug Smythies
@Haw Loeung: It would be good to understand in more detail your
findings. As far as I know (and I am not an expert in this area), great
care has been taken to avoid things like wakeups just to decide to go
idle.

I did a test on my computer (Ubuntu 16.04 server, no GUI), but to avoid
extra overheads, I used the /proc/timer_stats method. I also did the
test over 300 seconds, so as to dilute influence from the command
itself. Kernel: 4.8.0-040800rc5-generic

intel_pstate, "idle" system:
powersave: 14722 events, 49.073 events / second
performance: 14964 events, 49.879 events / second

intel_pstate: extra "idle" system:
powersave: 6381 total events, 21.269 events / second
performance: 6788 events, 22.626 events / second

Which kernel are you using? There was a flurry of high wakeups activity
in June, but I thought it all got resolved. Note that there was a slight
increase in wakeups with the recent change to a utilization based
algorithm, but that was good thing because it solved a very long
standing issue whereby the CPU frequency might not increase under high
load for periodic workflows that just so happened to be idle on jiffy
boundaries.

You mention "on some workloads". Could you be more specific? i.e. so
that I can attempt to recreate your scenario on my computer.

My script:
$ cat ./set_cpu_timer_stats_2
#! /bin/bash
# Take a 300 second time sample
# A long time is needed to amortize/dilute the effect of the command itself.
# Reset the counters
echo "0" > /proc/timer_stats
echo "1" > /proc/timer_stats
# Now let the sample time elapse
sleep 300
# Now observe the timer counters
cat /proc/timer_stats
# And turn off timer stats.
echo "0" > /proc/timer_stats

What does "extra idle" mean?:
$ cat set_cpu_turn_off_services
#! /bin/bash
# Turn off some services to try to get "idle" to be more "idle"
sudo systemctl stop mysql.service
sudo systemctl stop apache2.service
sudo systemctl stop nmbd.service
sudo systemctl stop smbd.service
sudo systemctl stop cron.service
sudo systemctl stop winbind.service
sudo systemctl stop apt-daily.timer

[Bug 1621579] Re: Unnecessary unlock button after PIN input on lock screen

2016-09-19 Thread CaduEllery
libpam_pkcs11 0.6.8-4

** Description changed:

  I work for a company with 7000+ desktops using Ubuntu and the fix for
  the bug #1593696 brought an annoying "Unlock" button to us. We use
  cryptographic USB tokens and before this fix we could unlock the screen
  just typing the PIN code and pressing Enter. Now, after this procedure,
  appears another button named "Unlock". Besides this, the button is not
  translated to our language (PT-BR).

  System:   Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
  Unity:7.4.0+16.04.20160715-0ubuntu1
+ Pam Module: libpam_pkcs11-0.6.8-4

  Expected behavior:
  1 - Wake up a locked screen;
  2 - Type the correct PIN and press Enter;
  3 - Wait for PIN checking (it's a crypto token device);
  4 - The screen is unlocked;

  What is happening instead:
  1 - Wake up a locked screen;
  2 - Type the correct PIN and press Enter;
  3 - Wait for PIN checking (it's a crypto token device);
  4 - Click on a button named "Unlock";
  5 - The screen is unlocked;

  Thanks.

However, since this test seems to have been run in an LXC container with host

[Bug 1625084] Re: [M10 FHD/ HD] Switching between scopes does not work to the right with Hdmi desktop mode.

2016-09-19 Thread Michał Sawicz
Javier, you just don't have any other scopes favourited, if I'm seeing
correctly?

You can click on the [^] button at the bottom to display all the
installed scopes. You'll see at the top that you only have Today as a
favourite.

To list your favourite scopes from a terminal:
$ gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Dash favorite-scopes

And to reset it:
$ gsettings reset com.canonical.Unity.Dash favorite-scopes

Hope this helps.

[Bug 1625084] Re: [M10 FHD/ HD] Switching between scopes does not work to the right with Hdmi desktop mode.

2016-09-19 Thread Michał Sawicz
Oh wait now I saw better - I think the problem is potentially the
virtual touchpad that doesn't detect your two-finger gesture well.

You can see that the cursor ends up on the left edge, invoking the
launcher, and it's only at that point when the scrolling doesn't work.

You should be able to use a single finger, too, with a "tap-and-drag"
gesture, just like on laptop touchpads (you tap twice and hold-and-drag
the second tap).

[Bug 1625119] [NEW] Nvidia settings can't be saved

2016-09-19 Thread name
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 16.04 suggest proprietary Nvidia drivers when a Nvidia GPU is
present. The settings in the nvidia-settings tool cannot be saved,
however, without starting the tool as root and doing all kinds of
workarounds which is impossible to do for the average user.

Do you really expect users to reconfigure their displays after every
login?

Unless you can fix this, the Nvidia driver recommendation should simply
be removed. Delivering such a horrible experience to millions of users
seems like a bad joke and the persons responsible should feel really bad
about this.

Ubuntu has no future anywhere with such usability issues.

[Bug 1625232] [NEW] [xenial] xgene i2c slimpro driver fails to load

2016-09-19 Thread Craig Magina
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
The X-Gene I2C slimpro driver fails to load, which is needed for ipmitool to
communicate with the bmc, locally.

[Test Case]
Ensure the slimpro driver loads and that ipmitool can communicate with the bmc.

[Regression Risk]
The slimpro driver is a standalone, xgene driver, so any issues with it will
only affect that platform. The patches were specified by APM as needed for
local bmc access to work. Outside of the driver causing a crash, a regression
in the driver itself would leave us in the same state we currently are, the
driver not loading or no access to the bmc locally.

We support the 4.8 kernel in the HEAD our stable-2.8 branch of lttng-
modules, we will tag and release 2.8.1 when the final 4.8 kernel is
released. In the meantime, you can use the HEAD of this branch or
cherry-pick the required commits from https://github.com/lttng/lttng-
modules/tree/stable-2.8

Cheers,

Michael

[Bug 629164] Re: modem-manager crashed with SIGSEGV

2016-09-19 Thread Bryan Quigley
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. This release has reached
EOL and the ModemManager code has changed drastically in the newer
versions.

If you're still having an issue, a fresh bug report would be preferred.

[Bug 1613867] Re: unwanted sign in sources.list

2016-09-19 Thread Phillip Susi
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 1625242] [NEW] Set default font size for all text and Text color

2016-09-19 Thread Alex - WarumLinuxBesserIst -
Public bug reported:

It should be possible, to set the default font size for all used text.

Like in Android it's possible to choose the standard text size: small, normal,
large, super large
Because if you don't have 100% vision, sometimes it's very hard to read text.
A good place would be: System Settings > Standard textsize

Also there should be an option, to adjust the color. Because in many places on
the phone E4.5 and tablet M10, the background is light grey and the text is
grey. So it's very hard to read the text, especially if it is small text.
I am experience that all the time on my bq E4.5, that I almost can not read the
text.

I just installed on my bq Aquaris M10 FHD Ubuntu Edition, the Android
5.1 Firmware and after setting the standard text size to "large" I can
easily read all the text. But after reinstalling Ubuntu Touch, the text
was so small again.

The only place where you can zoom in is the browser, but not anywhere
else.

Also it's very hard to read the text for send SMS. Green background with very
small grey text.
Especially the text bottom right, that's VERY small and for me unreadable. I
guess you need eagle eyes to read that.

Would be very nice if there is something to adjust the standard text
size to enlarge or shrink it globally.

[Bug 1613260] Re: update-grub (grub-mkconfig) includes all kernels in boot, regardless whether version is in /lib/modules

2016-09-19 Thread Peter Passchier
OK, I see your point. Maybe I've been looking at the wrong marker
(although all installs of Ubuntu that I know of would have modules). But
there must be some other marker that a particular kernel was never
installed in this system??

Or are you saying that any random kernel from some other
system/distribution will run fine with any other system?? If that is the
case, this fix is totally unnecessary, but is that true?

[Bug 1615021] Re: Unable to network boot Ubuntu 16.04 installer normally on Briggs

2016-09-19 Thread Martin Pitt
That d-i behaviour agrees with how the kernel interprets those:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/serial-console.txt -- i. e.
kernel messages appear on all "console="s, but the last one defines what
/dev/console points to.
