[Bug 59556] system hangs at boot time with the kernel 2.6.17-7-386

2006-09-08 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-7-386

Hi, the subject says it all. It started to happen after last update
(07/09/2006).

If I try to boot in single mode it stucks after
[...] usbcore: registered new driver usbhid
[...] drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: v2.6:USB HID core driver

and nothing happens afterwords.

The older kernel 2.6.17-6 boots and works.

Here is the forum topic: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=252811

I don't remember that I ever used 2.6.27-1 kernel. Is there a simple way
to install it? I think that many people started to test 8.10 later, than
the kernel was introduced (e.g. from beta release), and having such an

definitely try).

Yes, I observe it in Intrepid, and the error, despite the log message, can not

a) was blank
b) was successfully written by another application (the very same blank disk)

BTW, all these was mentioned in my previous comment.

[Bug 202950] Re: [Hardy] GMD's language doesn't change when using another default language

2008-03-24 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
May be I also got confused by this.

Can someone clearly explain, how the system should behave? And how one
can alter behavior of the system?

What setting GDM relies upon? The one in System - Administration -
Language Support - Default Language?

Then what is the idea behind asking a user to reload a login screen in
different language if the very next time upon login user will get it
again in default language and will be confused?

My guess it confuses not only me or people involved in this bug (or
feature) discussion but some other people as well, see for example bug
#202418: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/202418 and
may be there are other similar bugs were filed.

Re: [Bug 202950] Re: [Hardy] GMD's language doesn't change when using another default language

2008-03-24 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Thanks for clarification. I guess, I have to play with it a bit more.

Probably, the message or the text on the controls should clarify, that
the change of the language on the login banner is intended for one
login only and hint about the system-wide language settings, which are
used by default. BTW, in which language the message asking for reload
is displayed? The newly selected one, or the old one?

... here I was checking how it actually works... Some time later.

OK. I see now.

System locale: en_US.UTF-8
User selects: ru_RU.UTF-8

Once user request a change of language, he/she gets a dialog with the
question[1] + explanation[2]:
[1]Do you wish to restart the login screen with the chosen language?
[2] You will restart the login screen with the ru_RU.UTF-8 locale.
|No| |*Yes*|

Which is cryptic (locale notation used instead of the language), and
might be not helpful at all if user does not understand system-wide
language.

First, it might be wise to change the message, explaining, that the
banner is changed for one login only. Second, it might be helpful to
display the message in two languages simultaneously (system wide +
newly chosen), i.e. it will look like system wide locale message +
translation in one.

Thanks.

On Mon, Mar 24, 2008 at 2:03 PM, Sebastien Bacher [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
The login banner is a system one, it can't know what user is going to
login next so it uses the system default language. You can change this
setting using the language selector. Now if you are going to log in,
select a language, it's easy to guess that the user on the keyboard
wants to get this language used and gdm suggest reloading the banner in
the locale you are interested using so you can understand the option.
That's not because one user has decided to try some other locale than
the system default should be changed for everybody though, this option
only takes effect for the current session

[Bug 203108] [NEW] [hardy] Brightness level on battery is not consistent with user adjustments

2008-03-17 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Public bug reported:

Hardy, pre-beta, up to date.
Dell Inspiron 640m https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/DellInspiron640m

Steps to reproduce behavior:
1. Switch to battery power (brightness of the display reduces to the level of
approx 1/3)
2. Adjust brightness as desired (lets say 1/2)
3. Switch to AC (brightness - 100)
4. Switch to battery. It looks like the brightness drops to the same value as
in 1.

Another sequence:
1. 2. as above.
3. Wait till monitor dims out.
4. Do something to wake up the system. Brightness again adjusted to some
strange level (As in 1.).

Expected behavior: Once set for particular mode (AC power or Battery)
brightness level should remain consistently on the same level upon mode
switch.

[Bug 231736] Re: Touchpad changes behavior when using left-handed mouse

2008-06-05 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
I can confirm this behavior on Dell Inspiron 640m and Ubuntu 8.04 To
check it you need only laptop with mouse and touchpad.

As it was already suggested, tap on a touchpad should always be resolved
to a left mouse button click of right handed mouse (do not know how to
explain this more clearly).

There is not really convenient workaround: one may switch off treatment
of taps as a mouse button clicks and use touchpad only for cursor
movement and touchpad buttons for clicks.

[Bug 260540] [NEW] Wrong information about used disk space

2008-08-22 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Public bug reported:

Intrepid, latest updates.
ii nautilus 1:2.23.90-0ubuntu1.90-0ubuntu1

It looks like nautilus does not include hidden dot-objects while it
calculates used disk space.

To reproduce:
1. Create an empty folder, lets say test
2. Pick a folder with data (lets name it data) and copy it twice in the newly
created folder test.
3. Rename one of the copies, so that it starts from the dot i.e. .data

Check the properties of test folder. The size reported will be half of
the size that is actually in use.

[Bug 261113] [NEW] Keyboard layout applet by default for multilanguage configurations

2008-08-25 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Public bug reported:

Intrepid alpha4 Desktop CD.

Currently, upon loading live session with language different from
English (en), for example, I checked it with Russian, there are 2
keyboard layouts activated, but one can not find out, whether this is
the case, without checking out System - Preferences - Keyboard (Layouts)
or knowing default layout switching combination of keys.

I propose to use Keyboard Layout Applet by default for configurations
using more then one keyboard layout, moreover it might be very helpful
to provide an information about current keyboard layout switching
configuration (like what combination of keys is used to switch layout).

[Bug 259355] Re: [Intrepid] [alpha4] Live CD session does not start

2008-08-22 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
It is weird.

On the installed Intrepid I switched off splash option immediately after
install (few days back), because I could not get xsession running.
Without splash option system booted and worked like a charm.

Now, I've put back a splash option and I can not reproduce the behavior
consistently: sometimes system boots till the gdm login screen,
sometimes it is not (out of 10 or so reboots).

So, the bug is not about live session and is not about alpha4 anymore...

[Bug 135484] Re: Failed to execute child process -x (No such file or directory)

2007-09-03 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Found a problem.

There is an inconsistency in handling settings for preferred terminal if
one enables/disables 3D desktop (at least via System-Preferences-
Appearance).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Disable settings for terminal without 3D. Disable settings for terminal with
3D (let's say put custom, without a command in both cases)
2. Enable your favorite terminal while 3D desktop is off.
3. Enable 3D desktop. I get here still Custom option without a command.
4. Disable 3D desktop. Now I get the same, Custom option without a command in
my desktop without 3D.

It looks like option made active while 3D desktop was turned on
propagates back to a normal desktop settings, while it does not work
other way.

[Bug 317437] [NEW] GNOME interface with vertical alignment of panels/applets etc.

2009-01-15 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Public bug reported:

This is not a real bug report but a feature request.

Nowadays, more and more devices are equipped with wide screens, where the
available wide space on the screen may be nicely utilized using possible
vertical alignment for DE controls, especially for more o less standard
1280x800, 1024x600 notebook and netbook(!) panel resolutions. Currently,
components composing GNOME interface are not really suitable for vertical
alignment. Just try it out, and you will see what I mean. Some points w.r.t.
vertical alignment:
- there is no (at least straight-forward) way to assign fixed size for icons on
the panels, they are scaled with the width of the panel
- icons on the panel are aligned vertically, there is no way (?) to change this
- window list applet application buttons: size is scaled strangely
- clock applet aligns text vertically until it might fit o_O
- some icons (like in nm-applet, widow selector applet) do not scale
- notification area applet: aligns with the panel, not possible to align it
horizontally
- widening of the vertically aligned panel really screws everything

To conclude: I tried it out a few times, but it seems that there is no
way to come up with kind of nice and usable composition for desktop
interface elements if one wants interface based on vertical alignment of
components, although an option for such alignment is kinda available.

[Bug 317452] [NEW] Proposal: interactive progress bar

2009-01-15 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Public bug reported:

While installing Ubuntu once more on a friends machine, I thought of the
interactive progress bar element for wizard-type applications. Basically, it
should provide very fast intuitive way for the person:
* to get an idea on how far he/she is in the step-wise process of some sort
* fast switch to particular relevant step (like go back few steps to change a
name)
* ...

I may sketch it as follows:
[]  [++S1++][++S2][S3][S4][S5]   []

In the middle there is a progress bar like element, which is composed of
click-able areas with short description plus a possible mouse-over or
similar pop-ups with a more elaborate description, so that a person may
really go back a few steps in one click to change some relevant
information or do/redo actions on a particular step a while back. On a
sides - some advance to previous/next step controls.

In the example above the person is on a current step S2, further steps
like S3 S4 S5 might be inactive, while activation of active elements
follows some logic.

Next, next step:
[]  [++S1++][++S2++][++S3++][++S4]  [S5]   []

Sometimes, you realize, that you might have given not entirely correct
response a while back. Here, going with a mouse over the progress bar
and reading concise descriptions (if short step names is not enough)
person may be able to go back exactly to required step without multiple
use of go-back control element.

In my opinion such a control or set of controls (I do not know how
complex will it be to implement something like this) might be very
handy, since user may very fast recognize how far he is in the process
using just graphical feedback to get an estimate instead of realizing
what actually step 3 out of 7 means, and additionally go back few steps
at once.

Hope, that I made the description and intention clear.

2009-10-13 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Never mind. Functionality was messed up by update, which I was not
complete (reboot from the session just was ending up in gdm greeter
again). After reboot it is back to normal.

[Bug 124987] Re: Month names in Russian Localization should be in lowercase

2009-10-13 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Upon further testing... De-capitalization and using correct conjugation
for non-abbreviated month titles brakes appearance of month names in
other locations, where the word used standalone. For example, calendar
applet itself. Since I do not know all underlying details, like whether
it is possible to use some kind of logical selection for proper date
representation, I guess the fix of issue with months is not so
straightforward.

For abbreviated month titles and weekdays looks OK, although further
testing is needed. May be I just miss something here.

[Bug 124987] Re: Month names in Russian Localization should be in lowercase

2009-10-13 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Here is updated ru_RU file for testing.
Changes include:
* 2-symbol abbreviated week days
* abbreviated months start from lowercase letter

To test (root-privileges required):
1. Backup original /usr/share/i18n/locales/ru_RU
2. Replace /usr/share/i18n/locales/ru_RU with provided file
3. Run locale-gen

Finally, logout/login to pick up the changes. Happy testing.

[Bug 124987] Re: Month names in Russian Localization should be in lowercase

2009-10-14 Thread Alexey Balmashnov

2009-10-14 Thread Alexey Balmashnov
Unicode Common Locale Data Repository http://cldr.unicode.org/
*

END LC_TIME

LC_TIME

END LC_TIME
