[Bug 8978] Re: Grub - Error 21 returned

2009-03-27 Thread Daygan
I had this problem last night, and found this thread, and eventually,
via some comments on this thread and another link that ?? provided,
discovered what the ACTUAL problem was for me, and I believe it may be a
problem for a number of others here, as some have mentioned installation
from an external hard drive. This solution may also work for those who
have encountered this problem for other reasons, but I'm not certain..

Step by step, what I did:

1. I followed this person's grub solution problem: http://ow.ly/1zF5
(If in fact, with your particular problem, when you start, you see an options
screen to choose which 'instance' of your O.S. you wish to start, you can
probably skip to the next step. I've included this grub fix only because I
can't personally remember if the options screen was available for me before I
tried the fix or not)

the fix didn't work for me entirely, but after doing it, i did notice
that there I got an options screen to start various O.S. styles (for
lack of a better word - sorry i'm not a tech linguist). choosing any of
these options only brought me again to error 21, saying that the drive
doesn't exist.. Then I had an epiphany...

2. I edited the (hd?,?) and sd?# entries in the O.S. startup line to the
correct hard drive (hd) and partition area (sd).

long explanation: I noticed that the hard drive label that grub was
pointing to was incorrect, and in fact would have been the label that my
other computer assigned to it when I was installing the system via
external hard drive. In fact, I believe it should have correctively
adjusted this label, as I seem to recall that when installing Kubuntu
before on an external hard drive (this time I was installing Linux Mint)
i did not have this problem, but alas, it did not, and I therefore was
left with the problem and had to manually adjust.

So for those of you needing detailed explanations, here's what I did:
 a. type e to edit the command line
 b. select the command line you want to use - [I would do this for any and
all lines where you see (hd?,?) (e.g. hd1,0, hd0,0) and sd?# (e.g. sdb1]
 c. press enter, then edit all hd entries to your proper hard drive label
(most likely (hd0,0) and all sd entries to the proper partition label (most
likely sda1)
 d. hit enter, then repeat step b and c for all lines with hd and sd
entries (i'm not certain if this is absolutely necessary, but it doesn't hurt,
at least, and if it is necessary and you don't do it this will save you a
couple keystrokes from having to go back and start over again)
 e. once all hd and sd entries are fixed, select the top line and enter the
boot option (I can't remember if it's [Enter] or b but the explanation is
down there at the bottom of the screen anyway)
 f. the system should start properly this time (did for me, at least)

3. now you have to edit your grub file so you don't have to manually change the
hd and sd every time you start
 a. in a terminal window, type: gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
 b. when the file opens, change all hd and sd entries to the same entries
that you just used in the startup screen (most likely hd0,0 and sda1)
 c. save and quite. You're done! next time you reboot, the problem should
be gone.

[Bug 459608] [NEW] DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending

2009-10-24 Thread Daygan
Public bug reported:

honestly I'm not sure if this is a bug or just a problem with my own
hardware... or if I've changed settings in such a way that I've caused
problems with my computer. Whenever I start up my Ubuntu 9.10 operating
system with my external hard drive already plugged into the USB port
during startup, I am unable to mount the drive and get this message:

Unable to mount 130 GB Filesystem
DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already
pending

If I unplug the device and plug it in again, it can mount and is
readable. Have I done something wrong, or is this a valid bug? What
other information is needed to understand the situation more clearly?

[Bug 813887] Re: Touchpad not recognized

2011-08-03 Thread Daygan
Again, the touchpad is not working, and not being recognized by xinput
list. Could someone out there please give me some options? Aside from
fixing the bug, which seems to me to be something that could or could
not happen expediently, could someone at least maybe suggest how I might
go about hard-coding my touchpad information into a file somewhere (i.e.
xorg.conf or hal preferences or .. something?) so that I could force my
system to recognize my touchpad EVERY TIME?

[Bug 359061] Re: warning: Screen isn't composited. Please run compiz (fusion) or another compositing manager

2009-05-13 Thread Daygan
okay.. that didn't really fix things for me.. well, maybe it fixed about
50% of the problem.

I tried qetuR's method, checked the box, removed my workaround to force-
start compiz at startup, and then restarted my computer. I suppose
metacity's compositing manager started properly, or at least it didn't
give Avant Windows Manager any major problems, but suddenly I had 4
desktop spaces instead of two.. and Extra visual effects options was
still not available - nor was Normal.

After starting the compiz fusion icon, selecting compiz as opposed to
metacity, and restarting the windows manager, things were back to
normal, but still, that's just a workaround. I'd like the actual
solution.. I'll keep looking into it...

hmm.. ichudov, you're right - it seems that when I try to change my
desktop effects back to normal or extra, I get the message desktop
effects could not be enabled and yes, of course, I do have this same
AWN problem. I will note that I have another computer with which I do
not have this problem at all and have also updated to Ubuntu 9.04 on
that one. Also, when I turn on the compiz fusion icon and select reload
window manager the awn problem is solved, as is the Desktop Effects
issue. I have not, however, yet been able to fix this problem without
manually reloading windows manager. I'll have to see what is different
between my home computer (problem-free) and my laptop which has this
problem.

[Bug 813887] [NEW] Touchpad not recognized

2011-07-20 Thread Daygan
Public bug reported:

Laptop Model: Thunis CX8425
Touchpad manufacturer: unknown
Fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04, symptoms present from beginning

Touchpad is entirely unusable. When I run xinput list, no touchpad is
recognized; sudo tpconfig -i detects a synaptics touchpad, firmware
8.96. I did successfully start a session in which the touchpad was
recognized and usable (though detected as a mouse, not a touchpad, I
believe), but after a restart, the touchpad was again unusable.

2013-06-09 Thread Daygan
I'd love to use apport-collect 1189152 to gather system information
related to this bug, but when I run it, I'm told:

Package language-selector not installed and no hook available, ignoring
Fontconfig warning: /etc/fonts/conf.d/29-language-selector-zh.conf, line 8:

Fontconfig warning: /etc/fonts/conf.d/99-language-selector-zh.conf, line 11:

In fact, I do not have language-selector installed, because it is not
available in synaptic, but I do have language-selector-common and
language-selector-gnome, each of which default to being reported under
language-selector when reporting the bug.

The output for dpkg -l language-selector-* was:

2013-06-12 Thread Daygan
I had not rebooted, but I did after seeing your most recent question,
and the problem still existed. After removing 29-language-selector-
zh.conf under both conf.d and conf.avail directories, the problem also
still existed. After also removing 99-language-selector-zh.conf in both
directories, the warning message does not occur.

2013-06-12 Thread Daygan
I should clarify - after removing the 29-language-selector files, the
warning regarding the 29-language-selector was gone, but the warning
regarding the 99-language-selector files still existed. Removing 99
-language-selector-zh.conf files did away with the related warning.

[Bug 813887] Re: Touchpad not recognized

I haven't had problems with my touchpad since sometime last Autumn.. I
haven't tested the latest upstream kernel yet, but I have upgraded to
Ubuntu 12.04, and it's still working just fine. I'll update when I've
tested the mainline kernel.

[Bug 1175567] Re: wi-fi disabled by hardware switch ASUS Seashell

2013-05-05 Thread Daygan
I need a solution to fix this problem. Function+F2 does not fix the
problem. This issue arose only after an update from Ubuntu 12.10 to
13.04. Can someone help me?

[Bug 996523] [NEW] After resuming from suspend, NEW wireless networks cannot connect

2012-05-08 Thread Daygan
Public bug reported:

After I resume my session from a suspended mode, when attempting to
connect to a wireless network that was not the network that I was
connected to most recently before suspending, the system is unable to
connect, despite the fact that the presence of the network is
recognized. This may be the same bug as this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/665837 , but I have
specifically noticed that in my case, I can connect to the network that
I was previously connected to, but not other networks. I will have to
check again to see if, in fact, I am able to connect to ALL networks
that I had previously connected to before suspend, or only the one that
I had most recently connected to.

I tried installing that particular image .deb, and after reboot, my

[Bug 1175567] Re: wi-fi disabled by hardware switch ASUS Seashell

2013-05-08 Thread Daygan
Oh, nevermind. After a bit of searching and examination, I finally
discovered that my wi-fi was turned off in my BIOS under onboard
devices. It's odd that that being the case did not cause wi-fi to be
inaccessible in previous distributions, though.

[Bug 999498] [NEW] Tab-drag to move tab fails : opens new window

features were previously available in the Chromium browser. The same
error also exists in the Chrome browser.

[Bug 996523] WifiSyslog.txt

2012-05-08 Thread Daygan
apport information

** Attachment added: WifiSyslog.txt

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/996523/+attachment/3136978/+files/WifiSyslog.txt

** Description changed:

After I resume my session from a suspended mode, when attempting to connect
to a wireless network that was not the network that I was connected to most
recently before suspending, the system is unable to connect, despite the fact
that the presence of the network is recognized. This may be the same bug as
this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/665837 , but I have
specifically noticed that in my case, I can connect to the network that I was
previously connected to, but not other networks. I will have to check again to
see if, in fact, I am able to connect to ALL networks that I had previously
connected to before suspend, or only the one that I had most recently connected
to.

[Bug 996523] WifiSyslog.txt

2012-05-08 Thread Daygan
apport information

** Attachment added: WifiSyslog.txt

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/996523/+attachment/3136998/+files/WifiSyslog.txt

I will have to check again to
see if, in fact, I am able to connect to ALL networks that I had previously
connected to before suspend, or only the one that I had most recently connected
to.
