[Bug 149047] Re: Various icons don't have 48x48 nor scalable version

The new version of gnome-do (0.8) is really nice. It just kills me when
one of those blurry icons comes up on such an otherwise amazing looking
application.

[Bug 224174] Re: [upstream] [hardy] Impress: resolution trouble on desktop VS projector

2009-06-03 Thread Doughy
I had this problem with the latest open office 3.0.1

I tried for an hour to get Impress to display the correct resolution on
the projector output. It always appeared cropped. Finally, I realized
that I have to start openoffice on the virtual screen that is the lowest
resolution, then when I go fullscreen, it appears correctly out of the
projector.

I think OpenOffice should detect the monitor being used for the
presentation (lowest), then automatically change the resolution to match
it. You should be able to run your presentation from the laptop
monitor, and have the output appear on the other virtual screen.

[Bug 383305] [NEW] OpenOffice Impress Projector Resolution/Display/Screen Problems

2009-06-03 Thread Doughy
Public bug reported:

Today I had a embarrassing and frustrating experience with OpenOffice
3.0.1 Impress in Ubuntu 9.04.

I was giving a talk at an engineering conference. When it was my turn
to present, I plugged in the projector, went to the display control
panel, and turned on the output to the external monitor. I ran my
presentation, but when I went to full-screen mode, only part of the
screen was visible on the projector. I moved the presentation up to the
second "virtual" screen, then tried to re-run it full screen. My whole
graphics card crashed at that point, maybe because I'm using the
terrible intel graphics onboard driver.

My advisor luckily had another laptop with the presentation on it, but
when we fired up his, the same thing happened. We couldn't get it to
look right on the projector. Finally, in desperation, we went to the
"Slide Settings" in openoffice and changed it from full screen to
"window." We managed to get through in that mode, although it
definitely was a disappointment not being in full screen.

So frustrating.

[Bug 271626] [NEW] Need to Restart X (CTRL+ALT+BKSP) to turn on ext monitor / projector

2008-09-17 Thread Doughy
Public bug reported:

I have to restart X (CTRL+ALT+BKSP) to get a projector to work with my
Dell 1330 that came pre-installed with Ubuntu. I have to plug in the
projector, then restart X, then re-login, then restart my presentation.

I was giving a talk at a professional conference and it was embarrassing
that I had to reboot X and re-login while everyone sat there waiting for
me. One judge even came up to me and said "Don't give presentations on
Linux" when I was done. Great

My Specs:
Ubuntu 8.04
Dell 1330 with integrated graphics (intel?)

I'm happy to attach any log/config files if it would be helpful.

[Bug 271626] Re: Need to Restart X (CTRL+ALT+BKSP) to turn on ext monitor / projector

2008-09-21 Thread Doughy
Timo, there is a laptop hotkey, but it doesn't work to turn on the
output. The only way I can turn it on is to restart X.

Mackenzie, I have seen this problem on both a hardy clean install, and
on my laptop that I bought from Dell with Ubuntu pre-installed. That
said, I will try your xorg.conf file and see if it works. Thanks.

[Bug 124406] Re: Keyboard keys get stuck and repeat (Feisty, Gutsy)

2008-06-24 Thread Doughy
I had a similar issue. When I would type things, sometimes the keys
would get stuck so that certain letters were repeated: like
this. The issue would not go away until I reboot.

I believe I have found a workaround for this issue. When it started
happening earlier today, I ran the command "dmesg" to see if anything
suspicious was going on. I found multiple lines that looked like this:

[ 6632.422317] usb 1-4: reset low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
[ 6658.325791] usb 1-4: reset low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3

[ 6718.085649] usb 1-4: reset low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
[ 6724.837559] usb 1-4: reset low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
[ 6736.435365] usb 1-4: reset low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3

[ 6887.346695] usb 1-4: reset low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
[ 6898.207438] usb 1-4: reset low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3

I noticed that the USB port in question was my MOUSE port, not the
keyboard. I unplugged the mouse and put it into a different USB port
(on a different controller as well, sometimes multiple ports can go out
at once if the controller is bad).

The issue is now fixed for me. It's like the mouse being constantly
reset was causing a lag in the system, and if you happened to be typing
while the lag occurred, a queue would fill up with your last keystroke.
The queue would then "dump" everything after the lag.

It's possible that USB ports being used by other devices, not just the
mouse, may be causing the resets to occur. Check your dmesg and see if
anything is repeatedly being reset.

This problem does exist on Ubuntu. Like I said before, the only workaround

[Bug 312559] [NEW] Mounting removable drives causes blank windows in other sessions

2008-12-30 Thread Doughy
Public bug reported:

My wife and I frequently are logged in to the same computer. We use the
user switcher to jump back and forth between sessions. If my wife
mounts a removable drive, like the SD card from our digital camera, it
creates blank (totally white with no border) windows in MY account. I
can't get rid of them, because they don't have a close button or window
border. If I try to use the "Force Close" applet from my gnome panel,
it says that Nautilus has crashed and cannot be restored. I then get a
desktop where all my icons are gone.

I've attached screenshots of the white windows and the nautilus crash.
I can post log files if it would be helpful. Just tell me what's
needed.

[Bug 151285] Synaptic package repositories are checked but not enabled

2007-10-10 Thread Doughy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

I recently installed the beta version of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 on a
machine. I went to enable some proprietary drivers (nvidia-glx-new),
but it told me that the package had not been installed. I opened up
Synaptic and searched for (nvidia-glx) but it did NOT come up in the
results even though all repositories had checks in the boxes. I
unchecked the multiverse, then re-checked it, and performed the search
again. This time the search found the driver, and I was able to install
it.

There are two things that I think can be fixed for easier use.
1) The checkboxes should either not be checked by default, or the other
repositories should really be enabled by default. Some users will not think to
uncheck then recheck the boxes.

2) The restricted device manager should automatically check the
repositories for the drivers that they need so that newbie users won't
need to find the drivers themselves.

[Bug 151480] Screen goes blank booting Gutsy Gibbon BETA live CD

2007-10-10 Thread Doughy
Public bug reported:

I recently tried installing the Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 beta release. I was
able to boot from the cd and get to the first menu, after which I
selected "Start or Install Ubuntu." The orange bar loaded as expected
(although the graphics are misaligned), but when I got to the graphical
login screens, my monitor suddenly went blank with the message:

INPUT TYPE NOT SUPPORTED

I am assuming that this is some kind of monitor refresh rate that is not
working.

I rebooted and selected the safe graphics mode, after which I was able
to completely load Ubuntu with good resolution. I just think that the
main mode should be fixed so that people who don't know about safe
graphics will know what to do. Also, I am worried that when I go to
install Ubuntu onto my hard disk, I will not be able to get to the login
screen.

I am using an ACER AL1916 Monitor, and my graphics are run from the
integrated chip on my Intel 965 motherboard.

[Bug 109357] Re: gnome crashes upon relogin

I finally resolved the crashing when switching users. In order to solve
the problem, I had to set up my 915resolution by moving my desired

seems to be some kind of problem with 915 resolution. Read step 5 in

[Bug 461418] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV after connecting USB hard drive

2009-12-12 Thread Doughy
I'm having a similar problem, only I have no USB mounted. Every time I
turn on my computer, nautilus crashes and I get no icons on the desktop,
nor can I browse my files with nautilus. When I do a "dmesg" I find
these kinds of errors:

[3711.470374] nautilus[5866]: segfault at b6f4afec ip 023dc760 sp
b6f4aff0 error 6 in libgvfsdbus.so[23c+24000]

I did start having this problem when I had a USB device plugged in when
I booted. Now I'm stuck with the problem and can't figure out how to
get out of it.

[Bug 513980] [NEW] OpenOffice Writer severely lags when images are in the document

2010-01-28 Thread Doughy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I am working on a document that has a lot of eps figures. They aren't
very big files, only about 30K per image, and I have about 10 images
embedded into my document. When I load the document, or when I try to
scroll from page to page, openoffice Writer freezes up for about 10
seconds before it comes back. It basically makes the document unusable.
Is this a problem with EPS images, or images in general in open office?

[Bug 919801] [NEW] Unity dash file search is extremely slow

2012-01-21 Thread Doughy
Public bug reported:

When I try to use the Unity dash search feature to navigate to files and
folders, it is extremely slow. For example, if I hit the super button to
launch the search and then type "Pictures" to get my pictures directory,
it takes almost 5 seconds for the folder icon to show. In comparison, if
I use Gnome-Do to navigate to my Pictures folder, it's basically
instant.

I have attached a video screencast so that you can see the problem for

[Bug 919801] Re: Unity dash file search is extremely slow

2012-01-23 Thread Doughy
I tried both a Guest account and another user account on my same
machine. In both cases, the search function returned nothing when I
searched for a particular folder, even though I verified that the
folders I searched for did in fact exist within that user's home
directory. I even searched for the default directories like "Pictures"
and "Videos" but it came back with nothing. The only time it worked was
when I tried "Home" and it popped up quickly.

I take that back. It now appears to be working for the default user
directories like "Pictures" and "Videos." However, other directories
only worked if I manually created a bookmark in Nautilus. The search
returned results quickly, so I did not experience the problem of lag on
the other user account.

[Bug 919801] Re: Unity dash file search is extremely slow

I may have found a solution. I went into my ~/.local/share/zeitgeist
folder and deleted all contents. I then ran "zeitgeist-daemon --replace"
in a terminal to restart it, and things now work much faster when
searching for those folders.

Now my complaint is that the folders in my home directory are not being
indexed unless I add a bookmark in Nautilus. That may need to be filed
in a separate bug.

[Bug 749789] [NEW] Install option confusing to user: "Erase Ubuntu XX and reinstall"

2011-04-03 Thread Doughy
Public bug reported:

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 1, and when it got to the
installation option screen, I felt like one of the options was
confusing. There is an option that says something like: "Erase Ubuntu XX
and reinstall."

I think this can easily be interpreted as erasing the previously
installed version of Ubuntu, and re-installing the same version. It
should say "Erase Ubuntu XX and install Ubuntu 11.04" to be more clear.
This is a subtle thing, and most advanced users probably understand what
to do, but some users may be confused.

[Bug 775177] Re: Unity launcher glitches after returning from Suspend

2011-05-01 Thread Doughy
I am also having this problem, only it can be recreated on my machine by
switching to another user session, then coming back to the original.
Sometimes only the launcher gets messed up, and sometimes the whole
launcher and panels are affected.

I have created a screencast so that you can see what happens. In the
video, I switch to another account, then come back. When I return, the
panel shows up in a garbled mess.

If you need me to paste in the output of a command, please let me know.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 32 Bit with an Nvidia graphics card.

The icon should scale to other applications that may present it at a
larger size. Almost every other application that I know of uses icons
that look good at bigger sizes, so this is clearly an U1 issue.
