[Bug 277568] Re: invoking hostname as domainname does not produce results described in --help

2008-10-15 Thread Graham Inggs
Looking at this again, a more complete patch would be:

   if (!strcmp(progname, domainname) ||
!strcmp(progname, nisdomainname) ||
!strcmp(programe, ypdomainname))
   type = NIS;

I realize that this functionality has been moved into the nis package,
but installing nis just to provide the domainname functionality has the
side effect of a long delay during boot, accompanied by the message
binding to YP server

Stefano Rivera suggested that a package providing the domainname, nisdomainname
and ypdomainname links could be created that is incompatible with the nis
package.
I believe that the patch above, combined with a 'nislinks' package installed
with the hostname package is the solution.

Any chance this can be fixed before the Intrepid release? After Hardy's

[Bug 254596] Re: Update the NVIDIA driver to 173.14.12

2008-10-15 Thread Graham Inggs
I still find I have to manually fix the softlink
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglx.so every time I get a new Nvidia driver.
This is even after upgrading to a couple of Intrepid Alphas, and more recently
the Beta.

How can I undo what the Nvidia installer broke? Couldn't this be
detected or fixed when the driver is upgraded?

[Bug 254596] Re: Update the NVIDIA driver to 173.14.12

2008-08-06 Thread Graham Inggs
I've enabled hardy-proposed on two machines previously running Nvidia driver
173.14.09 installed using Envy NG and updated to Nvidia driver 173.14.12.
On both, after restarting, running NVIDIA X Server Settings and clicking on
OpenGL/GLX information gives the following error: Fail to query the GLX server
vendor.

Problem resolved by updating the symlink in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/ as follows:
# cd /usr/lib/xorg/modules
# rm libglx.so
# ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.173.14.12 libglx.so

Thanks Bryce, after looking through /var/log/Xorg.0.log I noticed that

[Bug 277568] [NEW] invoking hostname as domainname does not produce results described in --help

2008-10-03 Thread Graham Inggs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hostname

According to 'hostname --help', invoking hostname as domainname should
display the NIS/YP domain name, instead the host name is displayed.
Transcript follows:

$ hostname
dreamcoat
$ hostname -y
che.uct.ac.za
$ ln -s /bin/hostname domainname
$ ./domainname
dreamcoat

Output of 'hostname --help':

$ hostname --help
Usage: hostname [-v] {hostname|-F file} set host name (from file)
  domainname [-v] {nisdomain|-F file} set NIS domain name (from file)
  hostname [-v] [-d|-f|-s|-a|-i|-y] display formated name
  hostname [-v] display host name

  hostname -V|--version|-h|--help print info and exit

   dnsdomainname=hostname -d, {yp,nis,}domainname=hostname -y

   -s, --short   short host name
   -a, --alias   alias names
   -i, --ip-address addresses for the host name
   -f, --fqdn, --longlong host name (FQDN)
   -d, --domain  DNS domain name
   -y, --yp, --nis NIS/YP domain name
   -F, --fileread host name or NIS domain name from given file

  This command can get or set the host name or the NIS domain name. You can
  also get the DNS domain or the FQDN (fully qualified domain name).
  Unless you are using bind or NIS for host lookups you can change the
  FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) and the DNS domain name (which is
  part of the FQDN) in the /etc/hosts file.

As some commercial packages expect the NIS/YP domain name, I suggest
inserting the following lines in hostname.c:

   if (!strcmp(progname, domainname))
   type = NIS;

immediately below the lines:

   if (!strcmp(progname, dnsdomainname))
   type = DNS;

Alternatively, the help text should be updated to match the current
behavior.

[Bug 898624] [NEW] grub2 fails after running Windows

2011-12-01 Thread Graham Inggs
Public bug reported:

As requested here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/441941/comments/189

Recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 with grub-pc 1.99~rc1-13ubuntu3 in a
dual-boot with Windows, grub fails after running Windows.

Before and after sector dumps attached.

I suspect that the application causing the problem in Windows is ANSYS
Workbench 13.

[Bug 789483] [NEW] Vodafone K4605 (Huawei) not switching modes

2011-05-28 Thread Graham Inggs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-modeswitch-data

When I insert a Vodafone K4605 (Huawei) device it does not switch from
storage to modem mode.

Looking in /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules I found

# Vodafone (Huawei) K4605
ATTRS{idVendor}==12d1, ATTRS{idProduct}==14c1, RUN+=usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'

...but 'lsusb | grep Huawei' shows a different product ID

Bus 001 Device 013: ID 12d1:14c6 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

So I added the following line to
/lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules

# Vodafone (Huawei) K4605 v2
ATTRS{idVendor}==12d1, ATTRS{idProduct}==14c6, RUN+=usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'

...and now the modem correctly switches modes when inserted.

[Bug 789483] Re: Vodafone K4605 (Huawei) not switching modes

2011-05-28 Thread Graham Inggs
14c6 is the correct product ID for the K4605, 14c6 is the product ID after
usb_modeswitch has done its magic.
For some unknown reason the option driver didn't load automatically, and after
reversing the above changes it is still working correctly.

Marking as invalid.

[Bug 789615] [NEW] renaming a file selects also its extension by default in listview

2011-05-28 Thread Graham Inggs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In Ubuntu 10.04, renaming a file would start with just the file name
highlighted, not the file extension.
In Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04, the entire file name including the extension is
highlighted so pressing any key loses the file extension.

Re: [Bug 642792] Re: ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function

2011-02-24 Thread Graham Inggs
I've always used RightAlt+PrtScr in Ubuntu and Windows to take a
snapshot of the active window.
I'm still using Lucid (partly because of this bug as I often take
snapshots for instructional purposes) and both LeftAlt+PrtScr and
RightAlt+PrtScr take snapshot the active window.

On 24 February 2011 19:31, Miroslav 642...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:
 My understanding of Alt+PrtScr/SysRq was always like that:

 LeftAlt+PrtScr/SysRq produces screenshot of active window

 RightAlt+PrtScr/SysRq produces SysRq event

 On some keyboards RightAlt is labeled as Alt Gr.

 In Ubuntu 10.10 LeftAlt+PrtScr/SysRq produces SysRq
 and I think that's wrong.

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

  On an EN-GB keyboard (and maybe others) ALT+PrtSc is the default
  keyboard shortcut for Take a screenshot of a window as configured in
  System - Preferences - Keyboard Shortcuts. However the system
  doesn't seem to respond to that keyboard combination at all. Pressing
  ALT+PrtSc on a default Maverick install does nothing. Indeed
  attempting to _set_ that keyboard shortcut in the Keyboard Shortcuts
  dialog results in it not being registered.

  Workaround:
  sudo sysctl -w kernel.sysrq=0

  Steps to reproduce:-

  1) Try to screenshot the entire desktop with PrtSc - this works
  2) Try to take a screenshot of one active window with ALT+PrtSc - nothing
 happens.

  Additionally

  1) Navigate to System - Preferences - Keyboard Shortcuts
  2) Scroll down to Desktop - Take a screenshot of a window, and then click
 that line in order to set a keyboard shortcut for the action
  3) Press ALT+PrtSc - nothing happens
  4) Press a different keyboard combination such as CTRL+PrtSc or
 Super/Windows+PrtSc - this works

  Additionally

  1) Open a terminal
  2) Run 'xev' and then press ALT+PrtSc. Observe data in the xev terminal
 window when ALT is pressed, but nothing for ALT+PrtSc

  Seems a fairly critical regression bug given we document this keyboard
  shortcut in the help, and it's very commonly used by documenters and
  people getting support. It works fine in previous releases.

[Bug 581032] Re: mouse cursor gets trapped in a Motif drawing area when creating a popup menu

2010-07-14 Thread Graham Inggs
I came across this problem with the commercial Fluent preprocessor, GAMBIT
2.4.6, on Ubuntu 10.04.
It worked previously with Ubuntu 9.10. Installing Chris Carlin's xorg-server
- 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.3~ppa0 package solves the problem with Ubuntu 10.04.

[Bug 588348] Re: usb-creator should drop cache before calculating md5sums

2010-06-18 Thread Graham Inggs
 The current process is to format the disk which unmounts it, formats it as
 FAT32, and mounts it.
Thereafter, usb-creator generates md5sums and copies the files to the usb disk.
 Immediately after writing, it attempts to verify the integrity of those
written files by checking the md5sums.

Unfortunately those files may still be in the cache, which makes
checking the md5sums pointless.

The method I used to manually verify the files was to eject the disk, remove
and re-insert the disk then run
md5sum -c md5sum.txt

I propose that after writing the files to disk, usb-creator should flush the
cache before checking the md5sums.
I believe the way of doing this is to unmount and then re-mount the disk, or
possibly the following programmatically:
http://linux-mm.org/Drop_Caches

Incidentally, I do not believe palimpsest is able to detect these soft
bad blocks.

[Bug 588348] [NEW] usb-creator should drop cache before calculating md5sums

2010-06-01 Thread Graham Inggs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

I ran into a problem using usb-creator-gtk to create a live USB disk. I
first created the disk on a machine with 4GB RAM without error, but the
resultant USB disk would not boot. I then tried creating the USB disk
on a machine with only 1GB RAM and received the message that the md5sums
did not match.

After some experimenting and running md5sum manually I discovered the
USB disk had a few bad blocks which do not report read or write errors
when accessed. Dropping the filesystem cache or unmounting and mounting
the target disk again before checking the md5sums should detect this
kind of failure.

2010-06-04 Thread Graham Inggs
I've discovered that ANSYS DesignModeller expects to find libGL.so.1 in
/usr/lib/.
The following solved my problem:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so.1
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1

[Bug 438136] Re: palimpsest bad sectors false positive

2010-06-09 Thread Graham Inggs
 29.000 bad blocks does sound like something you should start being
concerned about, though.

The problem is that 29000 is the RAW value of the re-allocated sector
count, not the actual count of bad sectors.

I have a failing Seagate drive that I have been monitoring for several
weeks and I have established that on this particular drive, the lower
four bits of the RAW value are not part of the count. Palimpsest tells
me this drive has 893 bad sectors, but I calculate that it only has 55.
Seagate will only replace the drive when it has around 160 bad sectors.

 Do you still get those notifications with the current lucid or karmic-

I no longer get the notifications, but the SMART data palimpsest still
warns that I have 893 bad sectors, which is incorrect.

[Bug 436886] Re: Some proprietary binaries depend on libstdc++5, should be included in karmic.

2010-03-03 Thread Graham Inggs
@Compholio:
Thanks for your suggestion, I ended up downloading libstdc++5 from Debian:
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libstdc++5
It works around the problem, but I feel Ubuntu would be more user friendly if
libstdc++5 was available in the repositories.

Another commercial package that relies on libstdc++5:

[Bug 316872] Re: Patched grub will not boot from EXT4 partition

2010-05-13 Thread Graham Inggs
I've run into this same problem after converting root to ext4 after a Lucid
upgrade.
As soon as any files used by grub (kernels, stage1, etc) get converted to
extents, grub fails.

Running grub-install from a Lucid livecd CD did not help:

mount -t ext4 /dev/sda2 /mnt
grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

What seems to have fixed it was to boot from a Lucid livecd and do the
following:

mount -t ext4 /dev/sda2 /mnt
mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
chroot /mnt
grub-install /dev/sda

The 'rootfstype=ext4' kernel option does not seem to be necessary.

Upgrading to grub2 is not an option for me yet because of Bug #392158.

[Bug 1009436] Re: package-data-downloader hangs forever when attempting to download through cntlm proxy

2012-08-02 Thread Graham Inggs
[SRU] The attached debdiff backports cntlm-0.92.3-1ubuntu1 from Quantal
to Precise.

It fixes the following bugs in Precise:
- package-data-downloader hangs forever when attempting to download through
cntlm proxy (LP: #1009436)
- Can not play radio streams any more (LP: #659809)
- error when downloading files 2GB (LP: #1031670)
- cntlm does not work at reboot (LP: #825593)
- cntlm gpg error The following signatures were invalid: NODATA 2 (LP: #257210)

[IMPACT]
When behind a corporate proxy requiring NTLM authentication, users are unable
to:
- install packages which download external files, e.g. flashplugin-installer
and ttf-mscorefonts-installer (worked in Lucid)
- play internet radio streams (worked in Lucid)
- download files larger than 2GB in size
- download and install GPG keys through apt-get and apt-add-repository

[Regression Potential]
Minimal: cntlm has no dependants and no dependencies besides libc6
