Looking at this again, a more complete patch would be:

I realize that this functionality has been moved into the nis package,
but installing nis just to provide the domainname functionality has the
side effect of a long delay during boot, accompanied by the message
"binding to YP server...".
Stefano Rivera suggested that a package providing the domainname, nisdomainname
and ypdomainname links could be created that is incompatible with the nis
package.
I believe that the patch above, combined with a 'nislinks' package installed
with the hostname package is the solution.
