[Bug 463376] Re: can't catch $USER in /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default

2009-11-17 Thread Robert Chalmas
I also have this problem on my laptop running Karmic with all updates
available as of November 16th.

If I put those 3 lines in /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default:

echo $USER /tmp/aaa.txt
echo $USERNAME /tmp/aaa.txt
echo $LOGNAME /tmp/aaa.txt

after every login I get this result:

$ cat /tmp/aaa.txt
gdm
gdm
gdm

I would expect to get my real login name in those 3 variables instead of
gdm, which is of no use to take specific action based on which user is
logging in. This was working as expected with at least the 3 previous
versions of Ubuntu.

[Bug 903097] [NEW] kwin crash on second (and subsequent) login

2011-12-12 Thread Robert Chalmas
Public bug reported:

At boot time, the KDE session always opens successfully. If I log out
and try to log in again, kwin crashes immediatly after entering my
password and pressing enter, without displaying KDE desktop, instead I'm
back to the login screen. The next attempt is always successful and the
KDE session opens, but with the desktop effects disabled.

After opening System Settings, then Desktop Effects, I can see the
message OpenGL compositing (the default) has crashed KWin in the
past. If I re-enable the desktop effects and log out, then try to log
in again, the crash repeats as described above. This is 100%
reproductible.

The only two ways to be able to log in without crash when the desktop
effects are enabled are rebooting or killing the X-server.

This happens with kubuntu 11.10 (on a fresh install but also with all
updates) and 12.04 alpha1, but this did not happen with kubuntu 11.04.
This happens with both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.

[Bug 898666] Re: Ubiquity crash while checking packages to install...20%

2011-12-01 Thread Robert Chalmas
Here is the result of more tests to try to find what triggers this
problem:

The following factors had no effect on the problem (Ubiquity crashed each time
at the same point):
- using a different proxy (we have currently 2 in my corporate network)
- installing the 32 bit or the 64 bit version of Kubuntu 11.10
- starting with a disk already partitioned (and reusing those partitions) or a
disk with no partition and creating them during install
- installing in English instead of if French
- installing on another machine

Only this factor had an effect:
- installing Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit instead of Kubuntu 11.10 64 bit was successful

A strange fact:
- I could install Kubuntu 11.10 64 bit successfully on the same machine shortly
after it was released. Now this is no more possible.

Possible explanation:
- could a recent change in a repository used by Kubuntu but not by Ubuntu be
the reason for the current problem?

[Bug 94130] Re: HTTPS over proxy fails

2011-04-18 Thread Robert Chalmas
We still have this problem behind our enterprise's proxy with Natty beta
2.

The proxy was set in GNOME with System -- Preferences -- Network proxy
and applied system wide.

In a terminal, here is what I can see :
$ env | grep proxy
http_proxy=http://proxyxxx.ch:80/
ftp_proxy=http://proxyxxx.ch:80/
https_proxy=http://proxyxxx.ch:80/
no_proxy=localhost,127.0.0.0/8,*.local

When trying to report a crash using apport, I get after several minutes an
error message like Unable to connect to the crashes database. Please check
your Internet connection. urlopen error [Errno 110] Connection aborted by
timeout.
(note: this text was translated from French and does probable not match exactly
the one in an English system).

[Bug 893007] [NEW] geogebra depends on icedtea-plugin in Oneiric

2011-11-21 Thread Robert Chalmas
Public bug reported:

In the geogebra packages included in Natty and older versions of Ubuntu,
icedtea-plugin is listed as a recommended package (see
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/geogebra ). In Oneiric, it is now a dependency
(see http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/geogebra ).
This is a problem as the icedtea-plugin is known to be unable to run many
applets created with GeoGebra, for example all those on this page:
http://dmentrard.free.fr/GEOGEBRA/Sciences/accueilscie.htm (click for example
on the first one called Ondes sismiques). For this reason, it was a common
practice to replace the icedtea-plugin by Sun Java.
Now this is no more possible, as uninstalling icedtea-plugin also uninstalls
geogebra itself!
I would expect the geogebra package in Oneiric not to include icedtea-plugin as
a dependency.

[Bug 893007] Re: geogebra depends on icedtea-plugin in Oneiric

2011-11-21 Thread Robert Chalmas
I forgot to mention that the icedtea-plugin was renamed in Oneiric, which may
be the reason for the problem:
- in Maverick and Natty, it was called icedtea6-plugin
- in Oneiric, it is now called icedtea-plugin (without the 6)
But it is indeed the same software, still having the same problem to run applets
created with GeoGebra.

[Bug 893007] Re: geogebra depends on icedtea-plugin in Oneiric

2011-11-21 Thread Robert Chalmas
Hi Giovanni,

Thanks for your feedback. It's interesting to know that, on your side, the
IcedTea plugin is able to display the applets I mentioned.
On our side, all attempts to display those applets with Icedtea failed during
the past years with several versions of Ubuntu (at least 10.04, 11.04 and
11.10). Same problem with Kubuntu 11.10 and 32/64 bits. The only solution was
always to remove Icedtea and install Sun/Oracle Java.
I just tested booting on an Ubuntu 11.10 64 bits CD, installing IcedTea
(apt-get install icedtea-plugin; this installs version 1.1.3-1ubuntu1),
starting Firefox and loading the page mentioned in my original post: no applet
is working. I only get a white box displayed with the text Geogebra Dynamic
Mathematics for Everyone in the middle and the mention Applet started in the
browser's status bar, but the applet never displays.
After installing Sun/Oracle Java plugin (version 1.6.0_26), removing Icedtea
plugin and restarting Firefox, all applets run perfectly. So I can't understand
why those applets aren't running with Icedtea on my side...

2011-03-28 Thread Robert Chalmas
Please consider making this System Settings entry easy to remove if the
administrator don't want it.
This central place for configuration may be fine for a home user but is for
sure a nuisance for many admins wanting to avoid that the users (especially in
a school environment) play with all settings and generate a big mess. In my
service, we spent a lot of time to remove all unwanted shortcuts from the
System menu, so this new option, allowing to bypass our restrictions, is highly
unwanted for us, especially if it's located at a place where nobody can miss it
!

[Bug 628811] Re: lag or delay when selecting or typing timezone during installation

2011-04-05 Thread Robert Chalmas
I have the same problem and it is still present with Natty beta1.

Further, selecting a small country like Switzerland on the map is close
to impossible (being able to zoom on the selected continent, in this
case Europe, may help). Strangelly, most tries in this region select
even smaller countries like Liechtenstein, Luxemburg or Monaco, so the
only solution is usually to type Zurich in the text field, but this is
also difficult because of the very long delay before the characters we
type are displayed. The delay is often so long (1 minute or more) that
one could believe that Ubuquity has crashed, which is not true.

[Bug 586503] Re: /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default file not run if automatic login is enabled

2010-11-02 Thread Robert Chalmas
The bug is still present in Ubuntu 10.10.

This is not a surprise for me as there was no reaction from any developer to my
bug report on GNOME Bugzilla 5 months ago!

Does somebody have some relations which could help to make this problem
investigated and fixed ?

I know this bug may seem unimportant as it is mentioned as affecting
only 2 people, but I would like to add that I'm working for the public
education department in Geneva/Switzerland which deploys Ubuntu on 5000+
workstations, so the real number of affected users is very high,
considering this bug makes impossible to properly restore a mandatory
profile from our servers.

So I hope this bug can be fixed for Ubuntu 11.04, as this is the next
version we will widely deploy.

[Bug 669971] [NEW] gnome-panel clock applet crashes behind a firewall

2010-11-02 Thread Robert Chalmas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

1. Ubuntu release: 10.10 on i386 architecture (but happened also on 10.04)
2. gnome-panel version: 1:2.30.2-1ubuntu3
3. I would expect the clock applet running without crashing, even behind a
firewall.
4. When located behind a firewall, the bug is 100% reproductible by following
this simple procedure:
- add a clock applet on a gnome-panel
- add a city in its configuration (Click on the date/time -- Locations --
Edit -- Add -- chose any location -- OK).
- when clicking on OK, the applet always crashes immediately and I get an error
message Clock has quit unexpectedly ... and 2 buttons Don't Reload and
Reload.
- if I click Reload, the applet reloads OK but crashes again exactly 52
seconds later (very reproductible)
- this cycle of reloads and crashes after 52 seconds can be repeated for a long
time; the applet never runs for more then 52 seconds before crashing.

BUT: I have the possibility to connect the machine directy to the Internet for
test purposes (bypassing the firewall).
If I do so, without changing anything else, the clock applet never crashes.

It looks like the clock applet can't retrieve data when the machine is
behind the proxy and crashes in this situation.

I will enclose the relevant lines found in /var/log/messages; they all show a
segfault.
The first line was when I added my locality and the other ones after clicking
the Reload button and waiting 52 seconds.

[Bug 669971] Re: gnome-panel clock applet crashes behind a firewall

2010-11-04 Thread Robert Chalmas
Hi Brian,

Thanks for your quick reaction!

Well, I saw bug 660455 before reporting this one and hesitated some time
to determine if it was the same bug or not.

I finally decided it *seemed* not to be the same because:
- no explicit mention is made of being behind a proxy and that the problem
disappears when bypassing the proxy;
- no mention was made that the crash happens immediately when adding a location
to the clock applet configuration;
- no exact interval was mentioned between crashes, but only a very general a
while, which let me guess it was a longer interval then my 52 seconds, or a
random interval...

Now I can't promise my decision was correct because those differences
may be indeed caused by incomplete information.

I will add a comment to bug 660455 to suggest its reported to chek if he
can confirm, or not, the details I mention in this bug.

[Bug 669971] Re: gnome-panel clock applet crashes behind a firewall

2010-11-04 Thread Robert Chalmas
I found one more important factor to reproduce the problem.

The crashes happen only when we declare an automatic proxy script in
System -- Preferences -- Network proxy and then apply it system wide.

If we enter a manual proxy configuration information at this place, the
clock applet doesn't crash.

Well, this may be a workaround, but we would like to be able to use the
automatic proxy configuration which is working fine for all other
purposes and gives greater flexibility when changes have to be quickly
applied to 5000+ workstations.

I will copy there a summary of my tests mentioned above.

Thanks also to Pedro for caring about this report! I hope a developer
will be able to fix the problem.

[Bug 660455] Re: clock-applet continually crashing

2010-11-04 Thread Robert Chalmas
I'm also affected by this bug, which I already noticed in Ubuntu 10.04
and is still present in 10.10.

When located behind a firewall and having an automatic proxy script defined in
System -- Preferences -- Network proxy, the bug is 100% reproductible by
following this simple procedure:
- add a clock applet on a gnome-panel;
- add a city in its configuration (Click on the date/time -- Locations --
Edit -- Add -- chose any location -- OK);
- when clicking on OK, the applet always crashes immediately with an error
message Clock has quit unexpectedly ... and 2 buttons Don't Reload and
Reload;
- if I click Reload, the applet reloads OK but crashes again exactly 52
seconds later (perfectly reproductible);
- this cycle of reloads and crashes after 52 seconds can be repeated for a long
time; the applet never runs for more then 52 seconds before crashing.

But: if I declare a manual proxy or put the same machine on a network
where no proxy is needed, the clock applet never crashes.

[Bug 586503] Re: /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default file not run if automatic login is enabled

2010-06-12 Thread Robert Chalmas
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gdm

In Ubuntu 10.04 with gdm 2.30.0, the file /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default is
not run if automatic login is enabled.

This was tested on 2 very different configurations:

  - 2 desktops which were recently upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic then to
  Lucid;

  - 1 laptop with a fresh install of Lucid.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

  1. Create a simple /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default file, for example with
  this content:

  #!/bin/sh

  echo Test /tmp/aaa

  2. Logout from your session and log in again.

Check for the existence of a /tmp/aaa file. It will exist.

  3. Delete the /tmp/aaa file. Enable automatic login to any existing
  account and reboot.

Check for the existence of a /tmp/aaa file. This time it will NOT exist.

  4. Disable the automatic login and reboot, then login into the same
  account as before.

Check for the existence of a /tmp/aaa file. Now it will exist again.

My conclusion is that the file /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default is run during
a manual login but ignored during an automatic login.

I would expect the file to be run in both cases, as this happened for example
with Jaunty.

One more detail: I did a similar test with /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default
and found it is NOT affected by this bug.

[Bug 586503] Re: /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default file not run if automatic login is enabled

2010-06-12 Thread Robert Chalmas
Many thanks for caring about this problem!
Well, I can't give a unique answer. Here are my (rather strange) results after
upgrading to gdm 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu1:
- on one of my configurations (2 desktops upgraded from Jaunty) the
/etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default file is now run even if autologin is enabled;
- on the other configuration (the laptop with a fresh install of Lucid) it's
still not working as soon as autologin is enabled (but still working ok with
manual login).
Let me know if you need more information to further investigate the problem.

[Bug 586503] Re: /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default file not run if automatic login is enabled

2010-06-14 Thread Robert Chalmas
I'm very sorry but I have to modify my report from 2 days ago.
I repeated all my tests today and was not successful on any machine with the
proposed version of gdm.
I may have forgotten to erase the file generated by my echo command in
/etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default during a manual login and erroneously believed it
had been generated during an automatic login.
Now, after new tests on 3 different machines, I can confirm that nothing is
generated during an automatic login, so /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default is still not
run.

I have the same problem with my HP Pavillion dv6700 using an iwl3945 card.
The strange thing on my side is that this card was working perfectly with

It stopped working when I upgraded to Karmic.
Now, it's still not working on a fresh install of Lucid.

[Bug 429246] Re: Wireless problem: my card intel 3945 abg doesn't connect with my router, it continues to say me to re-authenticate

2010-05-14 Thread Robert Chalmas
I have to cancel my report from yesterday, as the problem was found to be on
the AP side (a Linksys WAG2000G ADSL router). My WiFi connection works again
since I restarted the AP. I believe its uptime was over one year but it was
still working perfectly for wired connections and still visible on the WiFi
side, broadcasting the correct ESSID, but obviously it was in a state which did
no more allow connections to be accepted.
The fact that the problem appeared just after upgrading to Karmic remain
unexplained and may be a pure coincidence.
I apologize for any inconvenience, but I would also suggest to anybody having
this problem to restart first its AP/router even if it seems to operate 100%
normally.

[Bug 1233677] Re: Crash while installing ubuntu 13.10 beta 2 amd64

2013-10-14 Thread Robert Chalmas
The daily build you mentioned installs OK, but it is Ubuntu, not
Kubuntu.

The problem still exists with today's daily build of Kubuntu, I further
noticed it happens if I try to install in French, but the installation
in English is OK, so it looks like some localized files could be
missing.

[Bug 1182784] Re: Install with German / Swiss Keyboard fails: ubi-console-setup failed with exit code 141 or Installer Crashed

2013-10-14 Thread Robert Chalmas
I also have this bug while installing the daily build (2013.10.14) of
kubuntu 13.10 / amd64 using locale Swiss/French. The installation is
successful if I install in English. As it was already reported, only
Kubuntu is affected; the corresponding daily build of Ubuntu installs OK
also with the locale set to Swiss/French.

I originally filed a new bug 1233677, which I'll mark as a duplicate of
this one.

Any chance this bug gets fixed before the final kubuntu 13.10 is
released?

[Bug 1182784] Re: Install with German / Swiss Keyboard fails: ubi-console-setup failed with exit code 141 or Installer Crashed

2014-03-21 Thread Robert Chalmas
My latest results with Country=Switzerland / Keymap=Swiss French:

- no problem with Kubuntu 12.04.4 64-bit (the installation succeeds)

- the bug is still present in Kubuntu 14.04 beta1 64-bit (the
installation fails with the usual errors).

[Bug 1182784] Re: Install with German / Swiss Keyboard fails: ubi-console-setup failed with exit code 141 or Installer Crashed

2014-04-15 Thread Robert Chalmas
Thank you very much to Rohan for caring about this bug.

Please don't forget that it also applies to Switzerland/French (as I
mentioned in comment #12), not only to Switzerland/German, so I would be
nice to fix the problem for both languages at the same time.

[Bug 1182784] Re: Install with non English language fails on Keyboard: ubi-console-setup failed with exit code 141 or Installer Crashed

2014-09-09 Thread Robert Chalmas
Just tested with the daily build of kubuntu 14.04.1 (20140909), downloaded from:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/trusty/daily-live/current/
It already includes ubiquity 2.18.8.2, so no need to make any change before
starting ubiquity.
The installation in French with the swiss french keyboard was successful.
Thank you very much for fixing this very annoying bug!

[Bug 1511621] Re: Missing dependencies for qml-module-qt-labs-settings and qml-module-qt-labs-folderlistmodel

2016-01-12 Thread Robert Chalmas
The problem also happens with the development version of kubuntu 16.04, with
all updates released till 12.01.2016 installed.
I confirm that it is fixed by installing the 2 packages:
qml-module-qt-labs-folderlistmodel and qml-module-qt-labs-settings.
Thanks to Serhiy for finding the reason for this problem!

[Bug 1781418] Re: User not being initialized correctly on login

2018-11-13 Thread Robert Chalmas
Similarly to comment #15: updating libpam-kwallet-common, libpam-
kwallet4 and libpam-kwallet5 to version 4:5.12.7-0ubuntu0.1 from
proposed repository and rebooting didn't change anything for me.

Only the workaround on comment #5 is currently useful, but I don't know
which other problems it may cause...

As an additional test, I uncommented again the 2 "pam_kwallet" lines in
/etc/pam.d/lightdm, rebooted, and the problems reappeared.
