Re: [Bug 301791] Re: flash player not fully working on Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit Firefox 3

2008-12-09 Thread Gary Trakhman
it could just be your cpu throttling down differently in linux than
windows. Check the cpufreq applet in the gnome bar or cat
/proc/cpuinfo. Basically 65% of 800MHz is better for power savings
than ~25% of 2.26GHz (in my case), so linux throttles down the cpu b/c
it can get away with it with the ondemand governor. Also, use of
compiz and video drivers and such may affect it.

made simlinks to it under the plugi-folders of mozilla, firefox and iceweasel.
 everything is working fine,
it is way better than before...
nevertheless, i still get 60% CPU...
 is this normal?
under windows i would get for the same film 25% CPU...
 what is this?

also, linux (top) reports 100% for one core being fully used in a dual
core system... while windows reports 50%, so that could explain it.

[Bug 301524] [NEW] thinkpad brightness controls reversed (please implement fix from fedora dudes)

2008-11-23 Thread Gary Trakhman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image

brightness steps are reversed as reported by lshal. This causes the Fn-
Home and Fn-End buttons to work in reverse, and the brightness increases
on idle, etc. The link below has a patch to fix video.c in the kernel,
it will implement a sort on the brightness values. Please implement
this for us ubuntu users and help push it up to the linux kernel.

Fixing this would be moot as adobe just released a native 64-bit plugin
that doesn't require nspluginwrapper. Why not implement the new plugin

you can test it yourself, remove all the flash packages and download the .so
from here and stick it in your firefox plugins directory:

Btw, if you have problems with flash in firefox, I always recommend to

so, there's still nsplugin files left over after an apt-get remove

[Bug 320694] [NEW] web pages take a long time to load

2009-01-23 Thread Gary Musker
Public bug reported:

Upgraded to 8.10 from 8.04 the latter giving no problem at all.

Many of the sites take an absolute age to load whilst others appear to
load with no problem. Ebay is the worst site where each time you click a
new page you have to wait for it to load. mostly it says 'transfering
date from. etc' other times the loading bar in the bottom does nopt
complete its full travel whilst in the bottom left hand corner it says
'Done'.As an instance this web page and site has given me no problems at
all.

I can not see videos on you tube, and on ebay i cant see some of the
boxes which I assume carry adverts they appear as blank boxes.

If I go on MP3PANDA I have no problem at all yet there are many images
on the site.

I am a amatuer where linux is concernec and if you can solve the problem
could you please convey the solution in a very simplistic manner.

Look forward to a happy conclusion.

Kind Regards

[Bug 315070] [NEW] Visual effects not properly functioning

corrupted file. The system froze up, so I had no other choice but to
reboot. I chose recovery mode through the startup menu and it rebuilt

[Bug 147464] Re: Heavy network activity (eg: torrent/nfs file transfers) causes Hard System Locks and/or Network Freezes.

2008-12-05 Thread Gary Mansell
I think I spoke too early when I said that this was fixed in Intrepid
x86_64

I think I am seeing this again. I am downloading a file from an ftp site
with Firefox and my system keeps freezing for approx 5-10 secs at a time
every couple of minutes. The Windows all go dark and then come back to
alive again which is what I was seeing before.

The download is only running at 100KB/s sois only using minimal
bandwidth on my corporate 30MB/s Internet connection.. My laptop is
plugged into a 1GB network port at the core of our 3Com network.

I declare this still a problem - but the occurrence is different to what
I was suffering before: it is a lot less and the system seems to be able
to un-stick itself rather than requiring a hard reset.

Still Bl**dy frustrating though - my system has locked up about 10 times
whilst writing this post. Almost unusable!!

[Bug 480970] Re: blank screen, no ttys, no mouse on boot after last update

2009-12-08 Thread Gary Scott
Interesting, this problem seems to be related to using Kubuntu/KDE in my
case (on the Samsung NC10) as issuing the following statement :-

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

and selecting gdm as the default desktop for ubuntu and after reboot
using gnome session from the login drop-down (instead of kde) solved
the issue.

I did have some problems with my synaptics touchpad after this (e.g. not
working) but an update to the latest kernel 2.6.31-16 solved this also.

Hopefully this may help some others and point others also in the
direction of what the issue may be.

Cheers,
Gary

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu.  Sometimes Firefox profiles can
become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict.  Could you please try
this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists?  You do not
need to delete your old profile to test.  If this helps, you might want
to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one
until you find the problematic one.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:
firefox -ProfileManager

[Bug 488516] Re: Compiz bug

2009-11-28 Thread Gary Alexander
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 492684] [NEW] suspend hangs system with any 2.6.32 kernel

2009-12-04 Thread Gary Trakhman
Public bug reported:

Karmic worked fine, since I've started testing lucid, I've had problems
with 2.6.32. First suspend is usually ok. Second will hang the laptop
and requires hard reboot. I've tried the ubuntu linux-image-generic,
and zen-kernel as well through multiple rc's of 2.6.32 hoping it would
get fixed. With zen-kernel, tuxonice would have the same problems in
2.6.32. Currently running stock linux-image-generic.

It's not a networkmanager bug

Networkmanager gets its list of connections from the driver, and the
driver may report the old one to exist when in fact it doesn't. This is
a bug with specific drivers i think.

[Bug 492684] Re: [Lenovo SL300] suspend hangs system with any 2.6.32 kernel

2009-12-10 Thread Gary Trakhman
Yes, it hangs with 020632-generic mainline kernel, and is fine with
2.6.31-ubuntu14. Oddly enough, it works fine while at the GDM prompt.
It is only after gnome login that it will hang. I considered a compiz
issue, disabled it, no effect.

2009-10-10 Thread Gary Orr
Hi Wolfgang,

The Linux (2.6.31-13.43) upgrade fixed the bug and Karmic is running
like a released version on my laptop. Thank you all for the time and
attention that you have given this bug.

Gary

 Hi,

You will have lenovo-sl-laptop support in karmic. I will check if its ok

I have modified the driver and send to linux-acpi mailing list. Hope
there will be accepted by upstream soon.

Re: [Bug 240930] Re: nspluginviewer comsumes allmoust all CPU

2009-10-12 Thread Gary Trakhman
when will the native 64-bit flash plugin be installed by default?
I've been using it with no problems for over a year with intel
integrated graphics.

I posted bug 238394, currently marked as one of 6 duplicates of this
bug, but I have to say that (for me) the problem disappeared when I
upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04, which isn't the experience here. I say
upgrade, I think I did upgrade originally, but I have since had to
restore my system to a new hard disk, which I did by installing a clean
8.04 and restoring large parts of the file-system from backup, so I'm
probably not a good reference point. Nevertheless, I'm not convinced
these seven reports are all true duplicates.

Whilst I'm here, those affected by this bug might want to try Flash 10.
It's available as a clean 64-bit plug-in and presumably has fewer hoops
(bugs?) to jump through to actually put pixels on the screen. (It
 certainly gives me no problems.)

Also, since the unavoidability of Flash comes largely from its use in
adverts, there's the option of blocking flash in most pages and only
enabling it for sites where you actually wanted to watch the video.
Won't help with YouTube, but certainly would for the average site, where
flash videos are *only* used in annoying adverts!
