[Bug 1042275] Re: dnsmasq should not register 127.0.0.1 with resolvconf if it's not listening on lo

I would say either way is fine, reading a configuration file or directly
communicating with resolvconf.

Directly communicating with resolvconf is the best solution.

[Bug 313027] Re: MASTER: fglrx does not support xserver 1.6

2009-03-17 Thread quequotion
We can't fix it, it's AMD:s responsibility to fix their driver, and
they are aware of it.. The same happened during 8.10 cycle, and they
released an unofficial driver just for ubuntu a week before release or
so.

I find this attitude counterproductive and naive.

Not being a developer myself, I can't claim to have pushed the Linux
movement forward beyond having reported a few dozen bugs on one forum or
another, but isn't an issue like this larger than just one development
team?

Of course AMD does need to update their drivers as kernels and x-window
servers evolve, but don't the kernel and x-window development teams also
have a responsibility to work toward more compatible products?

At the very least this issue is divided two ways: between the AMD
development team and the X-Org development team. As I see it, the X-Org
team is responsible for developing a more flexible, stable, and
compatible server while the AMD team is responsible for making a more
universal driver.

It's not productive to say we should just wait for one team to work it out,
especially one with no obligation to comply.
The AMD team has been great about keeping up with evolving distros, but keep in
mind those guys are actually paid for the work which they distribute for free,
so the decision to update probably comes from higher-ups who may not see the
problem as the driver they've been pouring money into, but the X-Org server
which has broken compatibility with it.
The X-Org team, as volunteers, have no obligation to consider proprietary
software support in their plans, but at least a few developers do make patches
to supplement the main tree for these issues. Why? Lots of reasons, but the
most important being: it is necessary and it is good for development. By
fixing up the server to be compatible with another driver, proprietary or
otherwise, the server becomes a better product.

Also, while I do sincerely hope that the open-source ATI driver will one
day offer all the features of the hardware it's designed for, it does
not and will not for quite a while yet. From the average user point of
view, not the open-source freedom fighter, this driver is a severe
downgrade and regression from the proprietary; from the Aunt Tillie
point of view, It don't work. and both are reason enough for many
people to give up on the distro entirely, stop testing, stop reporting
bugs, and switch to some proprietary operating system that gives them
what they want even though it costs much more. That's bad for
development and that's bad for Linux, not only Ubuntu.

tl;dr: Doing nothing is never the answer. Dev teams should work toward
mutual rather than independent growth for the good of Linux.

Also, regarding the bug: Has anyone had experience compiling their own X-Org
server and using the proprietary driver? Is it possible for the X-Org server
from Intrepid be forward-ported to Jaunty in the interim? It looks like more
data on where exactly this breaks down must be found if the X-Org developers
are to come up with a patch OR the AMD developers are going to rework their
driver.

[Bug 315735] Re: FakeRAID fails with kernel 2.6.28

2009-03-17 Thread quequotion
My RAID is an nvidia fakeRAID:0.

In the end, I was forced to give up on the distro however.

The workaround I posted was fine until I tried an update-initramfs for
unrelated reasons which I don't remember clearly (the terror and rage
wiped my memory just like the update wiped my boot options).

After that, all kernels on the system failed to boot from the raid.
Luckily, the data on the drive was not significantly damaged and I was
able to delete (file by file) the install and reinstall Intrepid from
the Live CD.

Again, I can't remember the exact options I set before doing update-
initramfs but the result was that ALL kernels failed to boot the same
way 2.6.28 does.

[Bug 292606] Re: dkms - error when installing custom kernel

2009-03-17 Thread quequotion
In Intrepid amd64 with kernel 2.6.27.18:

If I remove the nvidia-common package, the kernel install finishes
without error, but it is not really finishing.

The kernel is never added to /boot/grub/menu.lst and I suspect other
more important steps are being skipped.

I can manually add the kernel to menu.lst and surprisingly enough it
boots, but I can't be sure what parts of the install are being skipped .

I don't think this error is strictly bound to nvidia-common since the
installation seems to fail even without the package.

[Bug 292606] Re: dkms - error when installing custom kernel

2009-03-17 Thread quequotion
Disregard both of my posts.

My issue was not as it appeared.

Since I had edited my menu.lst by hand in the past (to add Grub
Invaders) the update-grub process was being skipped after the kernel
install. When I ran it by myself it asked if I want to keep my own
menu.lst or take the package-maintainers.

Now, I am not sure why the kernel installer decided to skip running
update-grub altogether, especially sine the program itself has a
failsafe to protect the current menu.lst.

[Bug 148381] Re: right-click menu closes and selects items when it can't fit below mouse pointer

2009-03-19 Thread quequotion
Having this problem in Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 on the gnome desktop under both
metacity and compiz with multiple (all?) versions and distributions of
firefox (abrowser, iceweasel, swiftfox and swiftweasel).

The location of the right-click does not matter. On occasion, when
right-clicking on an object, the right click menu will blink out and
then something random will happen. This is a problem when that object
happens to be a hypertext link. The link could be opened in the current
window and tab, current window in a new tab, a new window, copied to the
clipboard, bookmarked, or saved as a file. Without intervention, the
right-click menu will continue to behave this way until the browser is
closed.

It is possible to intervene by clicking the left and right buttons,
individually, several times on a non-interactive part of the screen (ie
uncovered background). This will temporarily recover the right click
menu, but it's equivalent to smacking your TV to get better reception
and eventually the bug comes back.

[Bug 503260] [NEW] Catalyst 9.3 (fglrx 8.593) boots to black screen.

2010-01-05 Thread quequotion
Public bug reported:

I'm elevating Sudheer's report to a bug because I'm having the same
problem. My setup is a little different, but the error is the same. I
installed Jaunty and downgraded for the legacy ATI driver. This works
well for fglrx 8.543, which is in the intrepid repos, but attempting to
boot with 8.593 results in a black screen.

I have seen elsewhere that a similar error was avoided by downgrading
libdrm2 to version 2.3.1, which I did in advance of installing fglrx
8.593 (installed 2.3.1-0ubuntu1 from the intrepid repos). It could
still have something to do with libdrm2, but I don't have any idea.

In my case the system boots all the way up to where gdm and X should
load, but the screen flashes on and off a few times (black screen when
on) then finally freezes while on at a black screen. I also have a small
line of red and blue fuzz near the top of the screen which looks
similar to graphical errors I get with fgrlx 8.543 if something
glitches.

This error comes out on a fairly clean install (base system and fglrx installed
(in chroot) via the livecd, then reboot).
Removing fglrx from xorg.conf does not make the system bootable and the default
fglrx also results in failure. I tried aticonfig --acpi-services=off as
suggested here: http://www.linlap.com/wiki/hp+elitebook+8530p and that causes
the screen not to flash and the fuzz not to appear, but I'm still getting a
black screen at boot.

Finally, I've removed fglrx completely so as to boot my system, but I'd
like to get to the bottom of this.

Why doesn't fglrx 8.593 want to boot?

I have xserver-xorg-core 1.5.2, kernel 2.6.28-17-generic, libdrm2 2.3.1
as well as a ton of other downgraded packages to match those.

Sudheer's original question:
Hi,

I have Asus M2A-VM HDMI mother board containing ATI Radeon X1250 display
card. I use KDE ubuntu 8.04 version. Very recently I installed the new
driver from the below mentioned link

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1product=2.4.1.3.7lang=Englishrev=9.2;ostype=Linux%20x86_64

After installation everything seemed to work. But after the reboot, i'm not
getting any display. Its fully blank. I'm not able to work on my system.
Please advice

Regards,
Sudheer

[Bug 503260] Re: Catalyst 9.3 (fglrx 8.593) boots to black screen.

2010-01-05 Thread quequotion
Problem solved.

Found this solution for OpenSuSe, but it probably works with any system
that loads from grub and uses fglrx 8.539

http://forums.opensuse.org/hardware/428160-11-2-fixes-xpress-200-other-
legacy-cards.html

The black screen of death can be fixed by editing /boot/grub/menu.lst
and adding vga=0xf06 and the end of your kernel line. This can also
be entered during boot, if you know/have no other way to access the
file, by editing the grub menu at boot (esc @ grub, select installation,
e, select kernel, e, type at the end) but it's temporary of course.

[Bug 496872] Re: busybox unresponsive

2010-01-05 Thread quequotion
I have since gotten around this problem. It turns out my initramfs was
broken by having been built while libraries were specified in
ld.so.preload (those needed for dante-client to run in the background).
I'm sure my configuration caused this problem, but I am not sure exactly
how.

Still, there must be a way to ensure keyboard support in busybox. As in
my case, where initramfs was loading things in some crazy order, busybox
could potentially be loaded before the keyboard module.

Is it possible for busybox to include code that would check this and
then load it's own rudimentary keyboard driver?

[Bug 496839] [NEW] xulrunner never fully installs

2009-12-14 Thread quequotion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xulrunner-1.9.1

Excuse me for posting with such little technical detail, but there's a
reason for that.

I made a botched attempt to partially upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic and
then back down again.

Going both ways I ran into trouble with xulrunner-1.9.1.

I have also run into this problem on a clean install of Karmic while
dist-upgrading.

Specifically, xulrunner never finishes installing... it gives a
configuration message and stops there forever.

If I killall xulrunner-bin, the rest of the installation process goes
on, but it breaks xulrunner, firefox, yelp, desktopcouch, and several
other packages depending on what's installed at the time.

apport claims (at the end of dist-upgrade, after killing xulrunner-bin)
that it will NOT log anything as this is the result of a previous
failure of which I also find no logging this is interesting for me
because I've never actually seen a message from apport appear while not
using apport...

I have attempted to compensate by forced purge of xulrunner and all
dependent packages, but that doesn't seem like a decent solution to me.

Which reminds me: xulrunner cannot be removed either, except by dpkg
with --force-all. Otherwise it tries to configure itself to infinity
again.

While encountering the dmraid booting problem as documented in Intrepid

amd64, I was unable to boot ubuntu. I am given a busybox prompt at boot,
which I've read can be used to work around the issue.

However, busybox doesn't respond to anything I type. It never has--in
three different distributions.

Is this a hardware issue? I've tried an HP PS/2 keyboard and a Buffalo
wireless keyboard, both Japan layout. The PC is an HP Proliant ML115

The wireless keyboard has no status LEDs, but the PS/2 keyboard shows no
response to caps-lock, scroll-lock, or num-lock; as if the keyboard were
not installed at all.

Both keyboards work in BIOS and grub. When I could get the system
working (with jaunty and intrepid) they also work in Ubuntu. Only
busybox fails to recognize their input.

[Bug 401713] Re: DMRAID only detect first subset on Intel ICH10R

2009-10-14 Thread quequotion
Would this fix have any effect on the bug with installing a new system
to raid or upgrading a system already installed to raid? I'll give it a
try later but I'm far from my PC at the moment.

[Bug 55428] Re: Helper applications cannot be changed, even when asked to do so by Firefox.

2009-10-08 Thread quequotion
UPDATE

I upgraded to Swiftweasel 3.5.3 and the bug has become intermittent.
Once in a while it complains that various applications do not exist, but
later during the same browsing session the problem is gone.

I have seen discussion of this bug elsewhere as related to xulrunner,
which serves as an interface between firefox's mime handling and the
operating system's.

While it seems just about taken care of, it may not be fully possible to
squash this one on the firefox end.

[Bug 356503] Re: [patch] Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 dmraid fails with Kernel 2.6.28

2009-10-15 Thread quequotion
just tried this patch on a system booting from a RAID:0 which also
fails.

It was no use at all.

When I installed the patched dmraid only one of the kernel's initramfs
was updated, the -rt kernel. it seems update-initramfs defaults to this
behavior unless i specify -k all

Is there any way to work out all the kinks in dmraid?

Was Karmic's dmraid updated to fix such problems? I'm about to install
the package and see...

The only way I can access the broken raid is to mount it from the live
cd and chroot by the way

[Bug 358255] Re: [jaunty] Root on nvidia raid 1 mirror does not boot

2009-10-15 Thread quequotion
I am having this problem but I can't get anywhere because BusyBox
doesn't recognize any input... in fact, the keyboard seems to be
disabled when busybox appears (Num, Caps, and Scroll Lock do
nothing) Any ideas?

I can get into the system from a live cd by chroot and it looks like my
Jaunty installation is fully functional other than the fact that dmraid
will not boot...

Another strange symptom: dmraid is looking for libdl.so.2 and can't find
it...

dmraid: error while loading shared libraries: libdl.so.2

libdl.so2, part of libc6, is most certainly there.

[Bug 482881] [NEW] various plugins missing

2009-11-14 Thread quequotion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-fusion-plugins-extra

Steps to reproduce:

1. Add compiz-packagers PPA to /etc/apt/sources.list
2. Upgrade compiz-fusion-plugins-extra from 0.8.2-0ubuntu1 (jaunty main
repository) to 0.8.2-0ubuntu1.2 (compiz-packagers PPA)

Many of the extra plugins do not function and do not appear in ccsm.

Simplest workaround so far:
1. completely purge 0.8.2-0ubuntu1.2
2. pin version 0.8.2-0ubuntu1 in /etc/apt/preferences
3. reinstall

[Bug 246952] Re: Missing Force feedback support in kernel (CONFIG_HID_FF)

2009-11-15 Thread quequotion
Is there a cohesive list of the gamepads/manufacturers supported by this module?
I have an Elcom PS2 controller adapter that supposedly provides rumble support
in windows (I don't have a windows pc with games to test this on) but it gets
no output in Ubuntu... The device has several other problems, mostly due to
shoddy and cheap manufacturing, so I can't really tell if the problem is the
hardware or the software.

[Bug 931460] [NEW] Unity panel displayed on top of full-screen windows

2012-02-13 Thread quequotion
Public bug reported:

This is not a duplicate of bug 591189!

The issue is not in appmenu.

The issue is either in Unity, Compiz, or X11.

Most likely this issue is with Unity.

PROBLEM:

The Unity panel is always visible, even when applications are in full-screen.
In that case, it is also impossible to interact with the panel; clicks go to
the full-screen application.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Install Ubuntu with Unity
2. Open any kind of application capable of full-screen display
3. Enter full screen display
4. Observe that the panel (which includes the application title, the
application menu, the indicator icons, the clock, and the user and system
menus) is still visible.
5. Furthermore observe that this panel cannot be interacted with while the
full-screen application can.

DEFINITIONS:

By Unity do not the entire ubuntu experience.
Unity means the user interface plugin for compiz.

By full-screen I do not mean maximised.
Full-screen means occupying 100% of screen space.

By panel I do not mean launcher.
Panel means the horizontal bar across the top edge of the screen.

MORE DETAIL:

I have an ongoing thread in the forums, but it has been difficult to
communicate what is going on.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1848739

I suspect that this bug affects all users of Unity on all platforms, but
has gone relatively unnoticed due to difficulty communicating the issue
and the fact that it only affects the upper 14.3% of the screen (1cm on
my monitor).

The term panel is misinterpreted to apply to both parts of Unity's interface
although they are a panel and a launcher.
The terms full-screen and maximised are misinterpreted as interchangable
while they are not.
Unity is also misinterpreted as the entire desktop and not one of it's
components.

[Bug 931929] [NEW] root on RAID:0 fails to boot

2012-02-14 Thread quequotion
Public bug reported:

Once again booting from RAID is broken.

There were similar bugs in Jaunty, Karmic, and Lucid.
I don't recall encountering this error in Natty.
It was definetly not present in Oneiric.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Upgrade to Precise (fresh install not tested, but likely has the same
problem)
2. Reboot
3. Observe failure to find root and drop to busybox

initramfs is not loading dmraid and therefore fails to boot.

To work around this, when given the busybox prompt enter:

dmraid -ay

and verify that your raid devices are initialized, thn enter:

exit

and booting should continue.

[Bug 876198] Re: When switching workspaces with rotate/cube previous Ws contents are momentarily displayed

2012-02-14 Thread quequotion
The main developer supposedly had a fix for this in November, but it has
never surfaced in any public bzr repositories.

Where compiz once had a thriving community, there's now only a ghost-
town of a forum, a painfully out of date website, and a dead git
repository replaced by a mess of bzr branches with no apparent
development strategy or focus.

Compiz has been declared dead in the blogosphere.

Support for it has been removed from other distros.

Cube is NOT a niche interest; it WAS the defining characteristic of the
compiz desktop.

What is going on here?

[Bug 940063] Re: Add iscan configuration to Jockey

2012-02-24 Thread quequotion
I've been digging a little deeper.

iscan is freely downloadable from here:
http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/iscan/2.28.1/

The source code is also available, and the readme clearly states that
this software is GNU GPL2

If you take a look, there's even an updated version that depends on libltdl7
(available in 12.04):
iscan_2.28.1-3.ltdl7*

I don't know why avasys has not updated their site to distribute this
version.

Jockey added the driver repository in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/jockey.list:
deb http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/lsb/epson-inkjet/stable/debian/ lsb3.2 main

I don't know why avasys has not made a repository for other packages
like iscan.

Updated procedure to enable scan over Wifi for Ubuntu 12.04(+):

1. Use jockey to install the ESC/PR driver (enables print over Wifi, installs
device, etc)
2. Download the following (for amd64, use i386 for legacy systems):
http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/iscan/2.28.1/iscan_2.28.1-3.ltdl7_amd64.deb
http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/iscan-data/1.13.0/iscan-data_1.13.0-1_all.deb
http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/scanner-plugins/iscan-network-nt/1.1.0/iscan-network-nt_1.1.0-2_amd64.deb
3. Install those with dpkg
sudo dpkg -i iscan*
4a. Add this line to /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf (use your printer's IP)
net 255.255.255.255
4b. Another, untested, possibility:
net autodiscovery
5. Comment out this line in /etc/sane.d/epson2.conf (just in case)
#net autodiscovery
6. Restart saned
sudo /etc/init.d/saned restart

Only iscan-network-nt has neither distributed source code nor a
license statement.

This may be what iscan's readme refers to by exceptions...for...several
non-free plugins.

This plugin is free, but probably requires proprietary licensing

** Description changed:

I was trying to access my all-in-one Epson EP804AW's scanner through a

This is INCORRECT for the EP804AW.

[Bug 868889] Re: screen does not refresh until mouse click or movement over responsive area

2011-10-15 Thread quequotion
Switching to Unity 2D does not *fix* this problem.

It merely avoids it.

I also worked around this out in Natty, by restarting the xserver after
each initial login, but that trick doesn't work with Oneric.

Also, this bug has gotten much worse for me.

The screen will absolutely not update unless a click of some kind is
made on a window's title bar or another window. Rotating the cube also
works and shows a glitch, replicating the current screen on all sides
for a split second.

This makes menus impossible to use since you never know what you're
clicking (the buttons only appear after clicking somewhere in the
invisible menu).

This makes the desktop useless as well.

Unity 2D Metacity still function but can't make up for the features of
compiz+unity

[Bug 875564] [NEW] Compiz will not redraw anything, anywhere with nvidia-current

2011-10-16 Thread quequotion
Public bug reported:

In Oneiric, while in the Compiz+Unity desktop using nvida-curent, no
windows, menus, panels, or notifications will redraw.

Unless they are dragged or the cube rotated; they display only their
initial state (often invisible).

This seems to be a compounding of problems I had in Natty, where redraw would
lag after inital login.
The workaround then was to restart the xserver, which no longer works.

Please tell me what details are necessary to identify the problem.

[Bug 875564] Re: Compiz will not redraw anything, anywhere with nvidia-current

The nvidia drivers I've tried so far are 280 and 285.

Both worked fairly well in Natty, though never perfectly.

Have you updated the wine packages in your PPA to depend on the fix for
Oneiric? Is it necessary to do so?

I ask because there's also the possibility my dpkg is broken and doesn't
understand the dependency chain (been happening a lot lately).

[Bug 875564] Re: Compiz will not redraw anything, anywhere with nvidia-current

2011-10-17 Thread quequotion
jayprakash

Are you sure you are experiencing the same bug?

How did your desktop's behavior change with each attempt?

For me, only the Unity/Compiz desktop with nvidia is broken.

Nouveau was working as well as it ever does, before I removed it and
reinstalled nvidia (after a severely botched upgrade to Oneiric and
several hours of hacking). Unity 2D is also working for me (it's better
than safe mode... a little...)

In other news, on a hunch I enabled the desktop gears decoration in
compiz. With the gears spinning inside the cube, compiz seems forced to
constantly redraw the screen. Thus windows, menus, panels, and
notifications are also redrawing.

Unfortunately, the gears are glitched in an Escher-esque way and the
cube still flickers the previous side over the current one on rotate
(looks like the cube and window rotate, then the window follows you for
a moment, then goes back to it's appropriate side) as it was doing
before.

[Bug 962832] [NEW] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000008

2012-03-23 Thread quequotion
Public bug reported:

Everything froze.

There were no responsive parts of the system whatsoever.

Tried to reboot [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL]
Tried to save and reboot from the kernel [ALT]+[SysReq]+[R],[E],[I],[S],[U],[B]
Tried to get another terminal [Alt]+[F1,2,3,4,5,6]

These freezes happen frequently.

Notice that I am using kernel 3.2.0-18

This is because 3.2.0-19 is freezing too often to have a usable system.

Most of the time, there is nothing left behind after these freezes.

No bug report, no system logs, nothing to even know the last session
ever happened.

[Bug 734908] Re: Unity is visible in fullscreen apps when using multimonitors

2012-03-13 Thread quequotion
This is not limited to multimonitor.

I have been having this issue with a single monitor for as long as I've
been using Unity.

There's an interesting blog post here:

http://somethingididnotknow.wordpress.com/2012/02/09/set-fullscreen-
windows-to-go-over-gnome-shells-and-unitys-top-bar-with-python-and-

Which suggests that fullscreen() may not be enough, and that only
windows with window-type Popup can cover panels in gtk3.

2012-02-21 Thread quequotion
Thomas

Done.

Even more deja vu!

I think we used the same work around back in Jaunty.

For more detail, here's that script:

---SCRIPT BEGIN---
#!/bin/sh

# local-top script for dmraid.

PREREQS=
prereqs()
{
echo $PREREQS
}

case $1 in
# get pre-requisites
prereqs)
prereqs
exit 0
;;
esac

# Activate any dmraid arrays that were not identified by udev and
vol_id.

#if devices=$(dmraid -r -c); then
# for dev in $devices; do
# dmraid-activate $dev
# done
#fi

dmraid -ay
---SCRIPT END---

When udev fails, the if clause I've commented out should activate the
raid drives, but it doesn't...

[Bug 876198] Re: When switching workspaces with rotate/cube previous Ws contents are momentarily displayed

2012-02-21 Thread quequotion
Be careful!

Unless you intend to usea lot of Natty packages or downgrade to Natty, I
wouldn't recommend adding the entire Natty repos to your sources and
updating.

A much more safe workaround would be to download the packages
individually and install them with dpkg.

We have to push for or contribute to a fix in Oneiric/Precise.

I have an idea, but not a very good one.

If we know 0.9.4-0ubuntu3 did not have this bug, but 0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu5
does not,
Then we simply have to compile and run each version of compiz between them to
find the exact lines of code that cause this problem.

Anybody have a week of free time coming up?

[Bug 876198] Re: When switching workspaces with rotate/cube previous Ws contents are momentarily displayed

2012-02-22 Thread quequotion
one more thing,

If you're going to use the older version and wait it out, you need to learn
about apt-pinning.
Unless those packages are pinned, the next upgrade will overwrite them with the
latest version.
You'll be right back where you started.

Here are some guides:
Best I can find (incomplete, rambling):
http://wiki.debian.org/AptPreferences#Pinning
Official doc (incomplete, outdated and inaccurate):
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-apt-get.en.html (section 3.10)

It's not the only way, but to make it simple, in /etc/apt/preferences,
for each downgraded package, add:

Package: package-name
Pin: version 0.0-0ubuntu0.0
Pin-Priority: 1001

[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2012-01-18 Thread quequotion
Fewer notifications is a lose term. I can easily abuse the current
functionality and keep triggering notifications. I just can't have them
disappear as quickly as I might like, ie it doesn't respect the timeout.

Indeed. Canonical's policy does nothing to affect the number of possible
notifications.

This feature serves only to limit the functionality and convenience of
notifications.

How clearly do I have to say this?

There is nothing good about ignoring the timeout parameter.

There is no logical reason to ignore the timeout parameter.

If we are going to use notifications at all they must acknowledge the
timeout parameter.

flash causes immediate reboot. (firefox)
2. browsing with even with only one open tab a flash application may cause
immediate reboot. (firefox, adobe flash)
3. compiling with gcc, using make -j7 (to utilize all six cores) sometimes
causes immediate reboot.
--Less often if the cpufreq governor is ondemand or conservative.
--More often if it is performance.
4. startup, shutdown, or suspend occasionally cause immediate reboot. I haven't
tested hibernate and it's difficult to know what happens with regular reboot,
but i suspect these may also cause immediate reboot.

These reboots are dangerous.

Sometimes they cause data corruption in whatever files are in use at the
time of reboot.

[Bug 690926] Re: Installer forces you to install grub somewhere

2012-01-02 Thread quequotion
Offering a choice of where or if to install a bootloader is something
very minimal that an installer must do.

A lot of people are actually scared of using command line. This needs to
be in the installer.

The big picture:

It may not be as simple as competing operating system installers, but
keep in mind that this is GNU/Linux.

Simple or not, compatibility with multi-boot environments is a
fundamental feature.

GNU/Linux was also designed with the ambition to run on just about any
kind of hardware.

The little picture:

Personally, I am concerned about this bug since I install ubuntu on a
RAID:0.

Theoretically this works (since Jaunty) but the past installers have all
failed to install grub to /dev/mapper/raiddrive.

Usually, the installer just fails, but sometimes asks or tries to
install to /dev/sda and then fails.

Unless I choose not to install grub and later install it manually from
the livecd in a chroot, I don't get a bootable system.

Ideallly, raid installation will be fixed and my issue will be gone, but
having the choice is still important.

[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2012-01-03 Thread quequotion
I was going to check this bug's ranking by searching launchpad by
number of comments.

Unfortunately that feature of Launchpad is broken!

Is this really something for the Wishlist?

There are already plenty of forum posts and blogs recommending to just
do away with notify-osd because of this and other design decisions
that really don't seem to make much sense or be worth stubbornly
supporting.

The offending cflag is -freorder-blocks-and-partition

Somehow this breaks profiled building, although it works in a standard
build and it works in a profile-generating build.

There are bug reports upstream, but I don't know if they mention this
flag by name.

[Bug 764330] Re: [regression] Moving windows lags behind the mouse by 1-2 seconds; appear to freeze when dragging.

2011-12-20 Thread quequotion
Good News first:

vv9 is very smooth!

With vv8, I had smooth window movement only on freshly mapped windows.
After being remapped (like after being moved) the window movement became
choppy.
This behavior was similar to my experience with the main and proposed packages.

With vv9 the windows stay smooth even after being remapped!
Excellent work! I really appreciate it!

Bad News next:

Dragging windows around the cube fails in a very odd way.
The cube starts to rotate, with the window, then snaps to the next workspace
but leaves the window behind.
The mouse is still able to move the window although they are on different sides
of the cube (O_o).
The breakage occurs when windows from the previous workspace momentarily flash
on the current one ( bug 876198 )

I suspect that bug has some relationship with the screen redraw issues you've
been working on.
I don't want to open a new (duplicate?) bug report, since both the packages and
the settings I use are unsupported.

[Bug 880649] [NEW] Compiz web abandoned

2011-10-23 Thread quequotion
Public bug reported:

The compiz website, compiz wiki, and compiz forums, and git-hub are
getting left behind.

The website has been out of date for quite a while.

The wiki hasn't been updated since version 0.9.4.

The compiz forums are filling with spambots.

The git-hub doesn't have any of the code for version 0.9.6

I understand the change of venue, since compiz is now an official part
of Ubuntu, but it would probably be helpful for the project if there
were some up-to-date information out there about how compiz works, how
to compile the source code, how to develop plug-ins, etc.

I know developers are busy people, but I could really use some feedback

For the moment I've purged all unity3d and compiz related packages and
files from my system.

I am using unity2d for a desktop, but it has a few issues that really
make using my computer unberable. (waiting forever to populate the
applications lens in unity, no possiblity of vsync in metacity, etc
etc).

Just a few weeks ago, I really impressed some friends with with compiz

they saw is broken.
