[Bug 313027] Re: MASTER: fglrx does not support xserver 1.6
We can't fix it, it's AMD:s responsibility to fix their driver, and they are aware of it.. The same happened during 8.10 cycle, and they released an unofficial driver just for ubuntu a week before release or so. I find this attitude counterproductive and naive. Not being a developer myself, I can't claim to have pushed the Linux movement forward beyond having reported a few dozen bugs on one forum or another, but isn't an issue like this larger than just one development team? Of course AMD does need to update their drivers as kernels and x-window servers evolve, but don't the kernel and x-window development teams also have a responsibility to work toward more compatible products? At the very least this issue is divided two ways: between the AMD development team and the X-Org development team. As I see it, the X-Org team is responsible for developing a more flexible, stable, and compatible server while the AMD team is responsible for making a more universal driver. It's not productive to say we should just wait for one team to work it out, especially one with no obligation to comply. The AMD team has been great about keeping up with evolving distros, but keep in mind those guys are actually paid for the work which they distribute for free, so the decision to update probably comes from higher-ups who may not see the problem as the driver they've been pouring money into, but the X-Org server which has broken compatibility with it. The X-Org team, as volunteers, have no obligation to consider proprietary software support in their plans, but at least a few developers do make patches to supplement the main tree for these issues. Why? Lots of reasons, but the most important being: it is necessary and it is good for development. By fixing up the server to be compatible with another driver, proprietary or otherwise, the server becomes a better product. Also, while I do sincerely hope that the open-source ATI driver will one day offer all the features of the hardware it's designed for, it does not and will not for quite a while yet. From the average user point of view, not the open-source freedom fighter, this driver is a severe downgrade and regression from the proprietary; from the Aunt Tillie point of view, It don't work. and both are reason enough for many people to give up on the distro entirely, stop testing, stop reporting bugs, and switch to some proprietary operating system that gives them what they want even though it costs much more. That's bad for development and that's bad for Linux, not only Ubuntu. tl;dr: Doing nothing is never the answer. Dev teams should work toward mutual rather than independent growth for the good of Linux. Also, regarding the bug: Has anyone had experience compiling their own X-Org server and using the proprietary driver? Is it possible for the X-Org server from Intrepid be forward-ported to Jaunty in the interim? It looks like more data on where exactly this breaks down must be found if the X-Org developers are to come up with a patch OR the AMD developers are going to rework their driver. -- MASTER: fglrx does not support xserver 1.6 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/313027 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 315735] Re: FakeRAID fails with kernel 2.6.28
My RAID is an nvidia fakeRAID:0. In the end, I was forced to give up on the distro however. The workaround I posted was fine until I tried an update-initramfs for unrelated reasons which I don't remember clearly (the terror and rage wiped my memory just like the update wiped my boot options). After that, all kernels on the system failed to boot from the raid. Luckily, the data on the drive was not significantly damaged and I was able to delete (file by file) the install and reinstall Intrepid from the Live CD. Again, I can't remember the exact options I set before doing update- initramfs but the result was that ALL kernels failed to boot the same way 2.6.28 does. -- FakeRAID fails with kernel 2.6.28 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/315735 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In Intrepid amd64 with kernel 2.6.27.18: If I remove the nvidia-common package, the kernel install finishes without error, but it is not really finishing. Disregard both of my posts. My issue was not as it appeared. When I ran it by myself it asked if I want to keep my own menu.lst or take the package-maintainers. [Bug 148381] Re: right-click menu closes and selects items when it can't fit below mouse pointer
Having this problem in Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 on the gnome desktop under both metacity and compiz with multiple (all?) versions and distributions of firefox (abrowser, iceweasel, swiftfox and swiftweasel). The location of the right-click does not matter. On occasion, when right-clicking on an object, the right click menu will blink out and then something random will happen. This is a problem when that object happens to be a hypertext link. The link could be opened in the current window and tab, current window in a new tab, a new window, copied to the clipboard, bookmarked, or saved as a file. Without intervention, the right-click menu will continue to behave this way until the browser is closed. It is possible to intervene by clicking the left and right buttons, individually, several times on a non-interactive part of the screen (ie uncovered background). This will temporarily recover the right click menu, but it's equivalent to smacking your TV to get better reception and eventually the bug comes back. -- right-click menu closes and selects items when it can't fit below mouse pointer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/148381 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 503260] [NEW] Catalyst 9.3 (fglrx 8.593) boots to black screen.
Public bug reported: I'm elevating Sudheer's report to a bug because I'm having the same problem. My setup is a little different, but the error is the same. I installed Jaunty and downgraded for the legacy ATI driver. This works well for fglrx 8.543, which is in the intrepid repos, but attempting to boot with 8.593 results in a black screen. I have seen elsewhere that a similar error was avoided by downgrading libdrm2 to version 2.3.1, which I did in advance of installing fglrx 8.593 (installed 2.3.1-0ubuntu1 from the intrepid repos). It could still have something to do with libdrm2, but I don't have any idea. In my case the system boots all the way up to where gdm and X should load, but the screen flashes on and off a few times (black screen when on) then finally freezes while on at a black screen. I also have a small line of red and blue fuzz near the top of the screen which looks similar to graphical errors I get with fgrlx 8.543 if something glitches. This error comes out on a fairly clean install (base system and fglrx installed (in chroot) via the livecd, then reboot). Removing fglrx from xorg.conf does not make the system bootable and the default fglrx also results in failure. I tried aticonfig --acpi-services=off as suggested here: http://www.linlap.com/wiki/hp+elitebook+8530p and that causes the screen not to flash and the fuzz not to appear, but I'm still getting a black screen at boot. Finally, I've removed fglrx completely so as to boot my system, but I'd like to get to the bottom of this. Why doesn't fglrx 8.593 want to boot? I have xserver-xorg-core 1.5.2, kernel 2.6.28-17-generic, libdrm2 2.3.1 as well as a ton of other downgraded packages to match those. [Bug 496872] Re: busybox unresponsive
I have since gotten around this problem. It turns out my initramfs was broken by having been built while libraries were specified in ld.so.preload (those needed for dante-client to run in the background). I'm sure my configuration caused this problem, but I am not sure exactly how. Still, there must be a way to ensure keyboard support in busybox. I have also run into this problem on a clean install of Karmic while dist-upgrading. Specifically, xulrunner never finishes installing... it gives a configuration message and stops there forever. [Bug 931460] [NEW] Unity panel displayed on top of full-screen windows
Public bug reported: This is not a duplicate of bug 591189! The issue is not in appmenu. The issue is either in Unity, Compiz, or X11. Most likely this issue is with Unity. PROBLEM: The Unity panel is always visible, even when applications are in full-screen. In that case, it is also impossible to interact with the panel; clicks go to the full-screen application. STEPS TO REPRODUCE: 1. Install Ubuntu with Unity 2. Open any kind of application capable of full-screen display 3. Enter full screen display 4. Observe that the panel (which includes the application title, the application menu, the indicator icons, the clock, and the user and system menus) is still visible. 5. Furthermore observe that this panel cannot be interacted with while the full-screen application can. DEFINITIONS: By Unity do not the entire ubuntu experience. Unity means the user interface plugin for compiz. By full-screen I do not mean maximised. Full-screen means occupying 100% of screen space. By panel I do not mean launcher. Panel means the horizontal bar across the top edge of the screen. MORE DETAIL: I have an ongoing thread in the forums, but it has been difficult to communicate what is going on. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1848739 I suspect that this bug affects all users of Unity on all platforms, but has gone relatively unnoticed due to difficulty communicating the issue and the fact that it only affects the upper 14.3% of the screen (1cm on my monitor). The term panel is misinterpreted to apply to both parts of Unity's interface although they are a panel and a launcher. The terms full-screen and maximised are misinterpreted as interchangable while they are not. Unity is also misinterpreted as the entire desktop and not one of it's components. ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: full-screen panel unity -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/931460 Title: Unity panel displayed on top of full-screen windows To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/931460/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 876198] Re: When switching workspaces with rotate/cube previous Ws contents are momentarily displayed
The main developer supposedly had a fix for this in November, but it has never surfaced in any public bzr repositories. [Bug 940063] Re: Add iscan configuration to Jockey
I've been digging a little deeper. iscan is freely downloadable from here: http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/iscan/2.28.1/ The source code is also available, and the readme clearly states that this software is GNU GPL2 If you take a look, there's even an updated version that depends on libltdl7 (available in 12.04): iscan_2.28.1-3.ltdl7* I don't know why avasys has not updated their site to distribute this version. Updated procedure to enable scan over Wifi for Ubuntu 12.04(+): 1. Use jockey to install the ESC/PR driver (enables print over Wifi, installs device, etc) 2. Download the following (for amd64, use i386 for legacy systems): http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/iscan/2.28.1/iscan_2.28.1-3.ltdl7_amd64.deb http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/iscan-data/1.13.0/iscan-data_1.13.0-1_all.deb http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/scanner-plugins/iscan-network-nt/1.1.0/iscan-network-nt_1.1.0-2_amd64.deb 3. [Bug 868889] Re: screen does not refresh until mouse click or movement over responsive area
Switching to Unity 2D does not *fix* this problem. It merely avoids it. I also worked around this out in Natty, by restarting the xserver after each initial login, but that trick doesn't work with Oneric. Also, this bug has gotten much worse for me. The screen will absolutely not update unless a click of some kind is made on a window's title bar or another window. Rotating the cube also works and shows a glitch, replicating the current screen on all sides for a split second. This makes menus impossible to use since you never know what you're clicking (the buttons only appear after clicking somewhere in the invisible menu). This makes the desktop useless as well. [Bug 875564] Re: Compiz will not redraw anything, anywhere with nvidia-current
jayprakash Are you sure you are experiencing the same bug? How did your desktop's behavior change with each attempt? For me, only the Unity/Compiz desktop with nvidia is broken. Nouveau was working as well as it ever does, before I removed it and reinstalled nvidia (after a severely botched upgrade to Oneiric and several hours of hacking). Unity 2D is also working for me (it's better than safe mode... a little...) In other news, on a hunch I enabled the desktop gears decoration in compiz. With the gears spinning inside the cube, compiz seems forced to constantly redraw the screen. Thus windows, menus, panels, and notifications are also redrawing. Unfortunately, the gears are glitched in an Escher-esque way and the cube still flickers the previous side over the current one on rotate (looks like the cube and window rotate, then the window follows you for a moment, then goes back to it's appropriate side) as it was doing before. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/875564 Title: Compiz will not redraw anything, anywhere with nvidia-current To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/875564/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Be careful! Unless you intend to usea lot of Natty packages or downgrade to Natty, I wouldn't recommend adding the entire Natty repos to your sources and updating. A much more safe workaround would be to download the packages individually and install them with dpkg. We have to push for or contribute to a fix in Oneiric/Precise. [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter
Fewer notifications is a lose term. I can easily abuse the current functionality and keep triggering notifications. I just can't have them disappear as quickly as I might like, ie it doesn't respect the timeout. Indeed. Canonical's policy does nothing to affect the number of possible notifications. This feature serves only to limit the functionality and convenience of notifications. How clearly do I have to say this? There is nothing good about ignoring the timeout parameter. There is no logical reason to ignore the timeout parameter. [Bug 571377] Re: The whole system suddenly reboots after few hours of browsing. (it shuts down REALLY fast and then boots very slowly)
This is happening to me but not only from browsing. I think it is a larger problem. In my case, with a Phenom II x6 CPU, I get sudden reboots under several different circumstances: 1. browsing with too many tabs (~30) probably with one or more using java or flash causes immediate reboot. (firefox) 2. browsing with even with only one open tab a flash application may cause immediate reboot. (firefox, adobe flash) 3. compiling with gcc, using make -j7 (to utilize all six cores) sometimes causes immediate reboot. --Less often if the cpufreq governor is ondemand or conservative. --More often if it is performance. 4. startup, shutdown, or suspend occasionally cause immediate reboot. I haven't tested hibernate and it's difficult to know what happens with regular reboot, but i suspect these may also cause immediate reboot. These reboots are dangerous. [Bug 690926] Re: Installer forces you to install grub somewhere
Offering a choice of where or if to install a bootloader is something very minimal that an installer must do. A lot of people are actually scared of using command line. This needs to be in the installer. The big picture: It may not be as simple as competing operating system installers, but keep in mind that this is GNU/Linux. Simple or not, compatibility with multi-boot environments is a fundamental feature. GNU/Linux was also designed with the ambition to run on just about any kind of hardware. The little picture: Personally, I am concerned about this bug since I install ubuntu on a RAID:0. Theoretically this works (since Jaunty) but the past installers have all failed to install grub to /dev/mapper/raiddrive. Usually, the installer just fails, but sometimes asks or tries to install to /dev/sda and then fails. Unless I choose not to install grub and later install it manually from the livecd in a chroot, I don't get a bootable system. Ideallly, raid installation will be fixed and my issue will be gone, but having the choice is still important. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/690926 Title: Installer forces you to install grub somewhere To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/690926/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 764330] Re: [regression] Moving windows lags behind the mouse by 1-2 seconds; appear to freeze when dragging.
Good News first: vv9 is very smooth! With vv8, I had smooth window movement only on freshly mapped windows. After being remapped (like after being moved) the window movement became choppy. This behavior was similar to my experience with the main and proposed packages. With vv9 the windows stay smooth even after being remapped! Excellent work! I really appreciate it! Bad News next: Dragging windows around the cube fails in a very odd way. The cube starts to rotate, with the window, then snaps to the next workspace but leaves the window behind. The mouse is still able to move the window although they are on different sides of the cube (O_o). The breakage occurs when windows from the previous workspace momentarily flash on the current one ( bug 876198 ) I suspect that bug has some relationship with the screen redraw issues you've been working on. [Bug 880649] [NEW] Compiz web abandoned
Public bug reported: The compiz website, compiz wiki, and compiz forums, and git-hub are getting left behind. The website has been out of date for quite a while. The wiki hasn't been updated since version 0.9.4. The compiz forums are filling with spambots. The git-hub doesn't have any of the code for version 0.9.6 I understand the change of venue, since compiz is now an official part of Ubuntu, but it would probably be helpful for the project if there were some up-to-date information out there about how compiz works, how to compile the source code, how to develop plug-ins, etc. ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/880649 Title: Compiz web abandoned To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/880649/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 875551] Re: Snappy player freezes, must be killed
Thank you robot for marking my bug invalid, it isn't. The out of date packages are irrelevant. [Bug 876198] Re: When switching workspaces with rotate/cube previous Ws contents are momentarily displayed
Sam mentioned in bug 874862 (comment #14) that he's worked out a fix but it needs testing. That testing would be much easier if there were at least a bzr branch with the code. Why is this being held back? Sam Spilsbury (smspillaz) wrote on 2011-10-20: ... Actually, the fix for this was insanely complicated. I've done it but it requires a bit more testing because its a big change to the way we do rendering. ... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876198 Title: When switching workspaces with rotate/cube previous Ws contents are momentarily displayed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/876198/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 875564] Re: Compiz will not redraw anything, anywhere with nvidia-current
I know developers are busy people, but I could really use some feedback on this issue. For the moment I've purged all unity3d and compiz related packages and files from my system. I am using unity2d for a desktop, but it has a few issues that really make using my computer unberable. (waiting forever to populate the applications lens in unity, no possiblity of vsync in metacity, etc etc). Just a few weeks ago, I really impressed some friends with with compiz on Natty and now I don't know how I could explain all that awesomeness they saw is broken.

[Bug 875564] Re: Compiz will not redraw anything, anywhere with nvidia-current
Update It seems this is an upgrade issue. Finally impatience got the better of me and I wiped the system clean and started over, just like I used to do it in Winblow$ 95.
