If you look *closely* into the engine you'll see something I started, but never finished. Here's a hint. :) It's a style that targets a specific type of theme that I have never seen before. The last thing we need in Ubuntu is another unmaintained engine - thankfully Ubuntulooks will be deprecated for Intrepid's release. As for the matte/glossy look, that can be achieved using a combination of gradient_shades and highlight_ratio in the SVN Murrine engine that's already included with Intrepid. AFAIK, there is only a Ubuntu India Team (available at ubuntu-in.org and #ubuntu-in in irc.freenode.net) and not any LUGs in Bangalore that I have seen people participating in the recent past. [ubuntu-in] trying to rip vcd without success
Hi have a vcd , made from a DVD tape. Have been trying to use k3b to rip it - however whatever i do it does not rip more than 2 or 3 minutes of a 600 odd mb VCD. Can figure out what setting or something else is not proper. If you just want to copy to your hard drive, you should just be able to go to the directory on the CD and copy the file (some newer DVDs you need to be root to read the file, but should work fine with a VCD, imo...) If you are trying to encode it to a particular format, the best way I know to do encoding is to use a latest version of ffmpeg .. mencoder should work as well . Dont know much about GUI tools for ripping though, sorry. If you see the file in the directory structure and you can view it on VLC, there should be an easy way to rip it. You could potentially also use VLC's Transcode/Save to File option, that's worked for me in the past. Hello Ram, AcidRip http://untrepid.com/acidrip/ is a good ripping tool for ubuntu. You can install it using following command. === sudo apt-get install acidrip === It seems that you had selected the first title/chapter of the VCD to Rip thats why you are getting the Ripped version of the title ( some part of the VCP ). Just to a file that i can edit and keep on my hd mean while also am trying to make a copy - cd to cd and this is an absolute pain If you just want to copy to your hard drive, you should just be able to go to the directory on the CD and copy the file (some newer DVDs you need to be root to read the file, but should work fine with a VCD, imo...) Questions:- 1) Anyone fancy helping run a Bug Jam in the UK? Definitely. I'm still wanting to get a packaging Jam organised, but events are conspiring to slow me down. 2) Shall we have more than one at various places around the UK? I think that if we can get more than one organised that will be great. For people who are unable to attend any real life event there will be lots of activity on IRC. We could have a virtual UK event alongside the global virtual event as well. (i.e. there will be loads of people in #ubuntu-bugs, we could use #ubuntu-uk for discussions amongst ourselves as well.) 3) Suggestions for venues which can accommodate a number of people over that period? Yeah, I'm not sure. I have a couple of ideas for Bristol that could accommodate a few people if anyone is interested in the South West. They're not great venues though, I don't think. Another thing would be whether we had a focus or two. In order to help share knowledge it's easier if people can be working in the same area. This means that we could focus on rhythmbox bugs, or anything to do with cd burning, or confirming bugs from old releases on Hardy/Intrepid, or closing Incomplete bugs that don't have the needed information. We don't have to have one topic for everyone, but if there is something you would like to work on (your favourite app, an app you have reported several bugs against that have not had much attention), then speak up and we could look for areas to attack around that. Also, with advance warning we can approach people knowledgeable in the package (maintainer, upstream, Debian maintainer, other distros), and get some collaboration going, so making the day more productive. Hi All - Lets say I have a copy of fresh copy of Ubuntu installed, with all my favorite packages installed as well as some custom stuff (/etc/ networking/interfaces file with static IP details, users setup, cron jobs ready to go) - Is it possible to take a snap shot of that distro that can be installed on another machine? (Example, if there some old people in the village I live in, I can install that snapshot distro on to their machines, and support them happily knowing the exact configuration of the machines) Thanks! This list is as follows: the first column displays a status like 'i' for installed packages etc. The second one shows the package name and the third one gives a short description of this package. Hi everyone :) I was reading on a blog about some drastic performance gains a bloke got from recompiling various bits of his video software with GCC compiler options optimised for his CPU. The results were good. This got me curious: 1. What compiler options are used for compiling official Ubuntu x64 packages? 2. Is it possible to query a compiled program to identify the compile options used? I know that video algorithms in particular are sped up by sse4 and so on. What is one of those computers for example. Could be any system available. Are you using dialup or broadband? What modem are you using. Which version of ubuntu? etc. The more specific you can be the more likely people will be able to help you. If you're using a broadband modem then which one? They're generally setup via the browser in ubuntu and setting will in part depend on you internet service provider so we may well need that info as well. Agora nao desapareceu o icone de atalho para a particao /dev/sda1, em Locais Computador porque eu gerei o novo UUID para a particao e nem alterou o ponto de montagem feito pelo instalador do Ubuntu ou seja /media/Disk, apesar de que na instalacao eu indiquei o ponto de montagem para o diretorio /mnt/sda1, demostrando que as opcoes e o ponto de montagem indicados no arquivo de configuracao /etc/fstab nao tem nenhuma finalidade e o que determina o ponto de montagem e as permicoes de acesso as particoes sao os UUIDs. Eu uso o Ubuntu 7.10, talvez isso seja um bug da versao. Nada a ver com bug da versão. É só uma mistura de coisas específicas do Ubuntu com coisas do nautilus para facilitar a vida. Como já discutido aqui na lista ontem, o diretório /media é usado para montar dispositivos removíveis, enquanto o /mnt é usado para montagens mais genéricas. No caso do nautilus, ele mostra no Locais Computador mas mídias removíveis. Daí o Ubuntu configura que as partições que você não define como parte do sistema (/usr, ou /home...) são montadas no /media para aparecerem lá no nautilus. Quando você configura o seu fstab para montar a partição fora do /media, o sistema como um todo passa a encarar esta partição como parte da árvore de diretórios, e não mais como um dispositivo que possa ser removido. Cara, esse é um problema que aflige muito porque é complicado de um lado ou
de outro.
Você poderia colocar na fstab. Só que teria que colocar as opções username e
passwd. O que significa que todos os usuários da máquina acessariam com um
mesmo usuário, sem falar que a senha ficaria a mostra para qualquer um que
fizesse caat /etc/fstab. Outra coisa que complica é que a montagem é feita
pelo root e você teria que colocar ainda a opção umask=000 para que os
usuários pudessem ler e escrever na pasta montada.
Por outro lado, você poderia usar users e noauto na fstab e fazer o smbmnt
com suid, mas isso abre uma brecha de segurança no sistema (não sei ao certo
qual seria, mas é o que tá no histórico da lista). Dessa forma você poderia
fazer um script e o usuário digitaria a sua senha de rede através do script,
com ele montando a pasta (mapeada para alguma pasta do home, por exemplo:
/home/usuario/rede/N) onde o usuário já tem as permissões corretas, passando
o username e passwd como opções on-the-fly. Claro ainda teria que por umask
mas aí é mais restrito. Eu uso assim e coloquei um item em menu que chama o
script. O script utiliza dialog para fazer o acesso. Como eu é que sou o
administrador, nem coloquei nada na fstab, simplesmente faço chamo o script
com gksudo, e aí se torna como um outra tarefa administrativa do sistema.
As várias opções para montagem você pode encontrar em man mount.
Se quiser automatizar, chama o script a partir do bash (ei alguém da lista,
isso vai funcionar?) daí quando o usuário logasse ele seria executado
automaticamente.Claro que o usuário teria que digitar a senha da rede
também.
Acho que é por aí. Mas gostaria que o pessoal da lista confirmasse.

Tem como desligar o som na tela do gdm? Explicando: tenho um note Acer TM e nele o som é controlado via o mix. As teclas de atalho para aumentar ou diminuir o som são Fn+Cima e Fn-Baixo. No gnome funciona legal. Mas no gdm não funciona e, às vezes a gente não quer que o note inicie com com. Outra alternativa seria controlar o mix pela linha de comando. Alguém sabe como? Meus caros, desde maio/08 tenho tentado instalar minha wireless no meu notebook, porém até o momento não obtive êxito. José! Comprei um note HP DV6870 e ele veio com uma placa wireless Broadcom 4328. Depois de tanto catar, achei alguns links que me ajudaram a configurar o wireless. Abaixo seguem os passos que usei para a instalação. Um amigo meu tem um note HP com uma broadcom com modelo diferente da minha. Ele seguiu estes passos e conseguiu fazê-la funcionar tb, claro que com o driver da placa dele... Placa de Rede Wireless: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 * Baixar o arquivo bcm4328.zip e descompactá-lo (este arquivo pode ser baixado de um dos 3 links abaixo. Este é o arquivo de drivers para windows. Para modelos diferentes, tem que procurar os drivers corretos) * Instalar o ndisgtk (Sistema - Administração - Gerenciador de Pacotes Synaptic) * Abrir o ndisgtk (Sistema - Administração - Windows Wireless Driver) * Clique em Instalar novo driver e selecione o arquivo .inf. Bem, estou desconfiando de que é o sudo que pode estar reclamando (é muito gerundio porque eu não tenho certeza) de uma linha muito grande. Já conectei com IP Fixo e com DHCP. Hoje está com roaming ativo e funciona sem problemas tanto em casa qto na empresa onde trabalho... O que eu observei é que se vc tem uma rede wireless protegida e não informa a senha corretamente, ele simplesmente não conecta e não exibe nenhuma mensagem. Pode ser este o seu caso... Já fiz esse compartilhamento funcionar a um tempo atrás, portanto não acho que seja problema no cabo. Já tentei IP fixo, DHCP, roaming e o Firestarter. Nada funciona. Nada funciona. Se vc tem um modem ADSL roteado, não precisa ter 2 placas de rede no PC. Caso o modem tenha mais de uma porta, basta conectar os dois PCs ao modem. Leonardo, Tenho uma máquina parecida com a sua e fiz a transição para os 64-bits no 8.04. Já tinha tentado usar o ubuntu 64 antes, mas dava muito trabalho pra rodar coisas básicas como o flash e o Java. Hoje posso dizer que estou muito feliz e não olho para trás. Não sei exatamente precisar, mas o sistema em 64-bits parece mais rápido. De qualquer forma, no modo 64 bits, nós temos acesso a mais registradores e o kernel AMD64 tem o código mais limpo por que quando foi portado, muito código legado foi deixado para trás! Beste, Sorry voor het onderbreken van de ketting maar ik denk dat het belangrijk is om na te gaan wie de opleiding OpenOffice heeft gegeven. Daaruit zullen we waarschijnlijk al één en ander kunnen afleiden. Indien de trainer onvoldoende kennis heeft van de materie krijg je uiteraard misnoegde gebruikers welke ook het product moge zijn. Daarnaast heb ik de indruk dat ook de organisatie rond dit project gefaald heeft in de opzet. Vanuit de OpendocSociety wil ik dan graag even de aandacht trekken op de mogelijkheid om rond ODF één en ander te verduidelijken. Hallo, De oplossing is toch heel simpel, ik begrijp eigenlijk niet wat het probleem is. Stel die pc's in dat ze automatisch in *.doc of *.xls opslaan. -- probleem opgelost. (in OOo: extra, opties, laden/opslaan, algemeen , daar altijd opslaan als ... ) Als zij nu echt willen werken met de MS standaard, ja ik zeg standaard, wie werkt er met al die andere bestandsformaten. 99 % van de computergebruikers of zelfs meer werkt met *.doc en *.xls waarom dan niet dat gekibbel van openstandaarden niet ophouden en gewoon neerleggen bij de situatie. Wij met linux zijn de indringers niet de windows gebruikers, wij moeten ons dus aanpassen aan de meerderheid en niet andersom. Als ik linuxcomputers of multiseatcomputers verkoop stel ik het altijd in met *.doc , ze kunnen doormailen naar wie ze willen. EN ze zijn dan ook het meest tevreden. Ik vind al de heisa die op deze mailinglijst verschijnt over één of andere instantie die overschakelt van OpenOffice naar Office 2007 grappig om te volgen. Ik gebruik al 12 jaar Linux, waarschijnlijk langer dan de meesten op deze lijst. Er is ook een tijd geweest waar ik mij (zoals de westvlamingen zouden zeggen) dul zou maken en gemaakt heb over dergelijke zaken. Ik vecht al 12 jaar voor Linux en probeer sommige mensen te overtuigen. Lees, mensen die iets willen bijleren, en een computer gebruiken waarvoor hij oorspronkelijk uitgevonden is; het uitvoeren en vereenvoudigen van taken. Geen gamers dus en zeker geen ambtenaren bij één of andere openbare instelling. Gebruikers van toepassingen, ongeacht die op Linux draaien, Windows of zelfs een OS/400, zijn _altijd_ weigerachtig tegenover nieuwe toepassingen en zullen altijd proberen terug te keren naar de oude situatie. Wat hier dus gebeurd is. Je hoeft daar niet kwaad om te zijn, dat is gewoon menselijk. Ik vertaal de oorspronkelijke mail even naar Vista+OpenOffice: een vriendin van een vriendin die bij het Brugse Gerecht werkt, zegt dat zij daar zeer ontevreden zijn van de nieuwe aanschaf, dwz een computerpark van Vista PCs voorzien van OpenOffice: er komen voornamelijk veel reclamaties, omdat ieder verzonden document niet compatible zou zijn; toch hebben zij daar 3 dagen cursus gekregen naar het schijnt... vraag: is dit soms onvoldoende om te leren opslaan in .doc of in .pdf vanuit OpenOffice ? Of zou het ook kunnen dat je de restricties in OOo zodanig kunt zetten dat zij daar GEEN ander format dan .odt kunnen opslaan? Het klinkt TE gek om los te lopen, of je kan je de vraag over de bekwaamheid van het personeel/de kwaliteit van de opleiding in vraag stellen! Consequentie: volgende week krijgen zij daar opnieuw 10 PCs die allemaal voorzien zullen zijn van Office 2003, om zo - ik citeer- toch nog te kunnen communiceren in een compatible formaat. Het is je misschien opgevallen dat ik zo goed als niets gewijzigd heb? Mvg Frederik Dewanckele Zaakvoerder www.linuxinstallaties.be Inderdaad soms gaan wij van de verkeerde invalswegen uit om promotie te voeren, daarom ook dat ik meer nadruk leg op zaken die de compatibiliteit met windows in de verf zetten, want de meesten zijn niet van plan om zoals ik windows prive volledig overboard te smijten. Ik ben nu sinds mijn opleiding professioneel bezig met zowel Linux als met Windows en de realiteit gebied mij om realistisch en nuchter te reageren op zulke berichten. Wij moeten van het stigma af dat we nog steeds dragen en dat komt wel, maar dan moeten wij gaan realiseren dat de realiteit nog altijd is dat MS de markt regeert en MS Windows synoniem staat voor de pc waar ze mee werken. Voor de rest ga ik hier niet veel woorden aan vuil maken, maar daden en dat is meer dan genoeg.
