I'm also aware of windows having no menus, but with (or without) toolbars and the gradient issue there. Good to have highlights for all widgets when selected again (before there was no feedback when selecting checkboxes, buttons or the like). The highlights on the Murrine version are still the ugly dotted lines, though. Is it possible to get them more like in the Aurora theme? Not sold on the shadows for the menu bar. For one thing, most shadows are working in the other direction, with a bit of shadow on the top but also much more shadow below and to the right. For another thing, the menu bar is not always there so we lose the shadow from time to time. I guess it could be argued that it is not a shadow, but then perhaps the gradient could be different so it doesn't feel like one. This theme seems to play with spacing quite a bit, which is interesting. Noted here is a border area around the scrollbar, which you can see quite quickly in the Epiphany browser or gedit. I like the scroll bars in the Murrine theme. In particular, I love how it looks like a single object instead of having the buttons for arrows divided from the bar. This looks less distracting and a bit more logical. It would be less rough of a transition from this to that neat scrollbar concept where one drags from anywhere. Speaking of borders, there is a glitch (and has been for a while) with the folder button at the bottom left with Nautilus in spatial mode. (Always open in browser windows unchecked in preferences). Dark status bar is nice. Part of me wishes it would have a subtle gradient, but not so that it relies on being at the bottom of a window. Address entry in Epiphany has a light grey text colour where it should be black. Perhaps this is Epiphany's fault, but may be worth looking into. Suddenly I am wishing for colour choice with the dark areas. (Not just black to choose from). Can one of the theme colour choices possibly influence this? I think the colors really work nice and certainly are original. My problems with it are that the buttons are too small and square. I do miss a prelight though. Overall I really like the theme. It is consistent and beautiful. There's something wrong with the scrollbars though. I somehow always end up clicking the wrong part of the bar. Maybe adding drag handles and a slight tint of brown/orange to the slider would help that. One glitch is the list view headers, which are highly glossy. This looks odd. I assume it is a slip? Then on your wallpaper with the wooden boards and the Ibex. I really like it. hi! i have a problem with eeepc installation. I write a mobile image in a usb (1 gb), later,i try booting this in my eeepc.. everything worked, but after a while, the system got frozen and displayed the following message:. Using unionfs instead of aufs to run the dailies
Hey, linux-lpia 2.6.27 as prepared by Amit was pushed today (thanks Amit!) and now includes the unionfs module, just like ubuntu-intrepid's linux. We don't want to release with unionfs, but as we don't have a new aufs snapshot yet, here's quick advice on how to use unionfs with the ubuntu-mid.img dailies. If you use real hardware, pass union=unionfs on the kernel command line; you can either edit syslinux.cfg on the USB stick and add this at the end of the append command line or type on the boot: prompt: vmlinuz boot=casper initrd=initrd.img persistent quiet splash union=unionfs if you use kvm, the same instructions apply. Another thing I've found useful to boot the images is using a custom local kernel; of course it's easy to add kernel and initrd to the vfat of the image, but you would need to grow it first and rerun syslinux. With kvm, you have another option which is to pass -kernel, -initrd, -append and attaching a casper-rw persistence image as a hard disk. To do this, you need: - a dummy hda image for qemu as it needs this to honor -kernel/-initrd/-append; you don't need anything in the image: qemu-img create -f raw foo.img 512M - the daily image - a kernel's vmlinuz, initrd.gz from a live CD (found in /casper) and the /lib/modules/kernel version found in the squashfs (whic is below /casper as well) - a casper-rw image which the initrd can mount, labelled casper-rw and containing the /lib/modules: qemu-img create -f raw casper-rw.img 512M mkfs -t ext3 -F -L casper-rw casper-rw.img mount -o loop,rw casper-rw.img /mnt mkdir -p /mnt/lib/modules cp -a ...kernel version's modules dir... /mnt/lib/modules then run kvm as: kvm -m 512 -hda foo.img -kernel vmlinuz -initrd initrd.gz \ -append 'boot=casper persistent ignore_uuid union=unionfs' \ -hdb ubuntu-mid.img -hdc casper-rw.img the persistent and ignore_uuid allow for mounting of casper-rw; you can add splash and quiet to mimic the default config. I verified with the above that things work as expected with unionfs (apt-get update) and can now strace hildon-desktop to poke mobile-basic-flash. Hey, Until recently I used a pair of Sony MDR-ED21LP Groove Shaped Earpiece headphones (in-ear earphones) but they recently broke. I took a look on Amazon where I bought them from 2 years ago and found that some of the reviews mentioned how fragile they are. So I'm now after a replacement pair of earphones and figured that someone on the mailing list would have some suggestions based on a set of earphones they've been happy with. So, any ideas? The M-Audio transit is very good in this respect. Simply a small box on the end of a USB cable with line in and Line / optical Out. Does anyone know if this definitely looks like an error caused by a failed disk drive, or is it an Ubuntu bug (which I seem to have hit a few when using Hardy - more than you'd expect for an LTS - that are already reported). Smartctl doesn't return a result on the drive, it does however from the remaining working drive. Arg !! I've had some problems with 'cheap' SATA cables, which don't quite come of when they are displaced in the case but subsequently they don't make a good contact and the SATA driver tries to drop the connection speed... My advice is to try swapping the drives on the ports to see if it's the port/cable or the drive that is faulty. As far as I'm aware 'md' RAID5 works fine in Hardy, but I've not tried RAID1 - I'm using a 3ware 8000 series 'hardware' RAID1 instead + it works extreemly well. Chris Hi Chris, When I use RAID5, I use 3Ware hardware - most recently the 9650SE. I would be surprised if anybody favours any other manufacture, as their stuff 'just works' (TM). One thing to note, Linux should support any real hardware RAID controller as it is at bios level rather than at the OS level like mdadm. The monitoring software comes from 3Ware is called tw_cli, and using various scripts floating around the net, you can email daily health reports and/or [Warning] when you have a failed member. I wouldn't mind buying a hardware RAID card as long as it came with some kind of monitoring application (so I could tell remotely if the RAID fell over) and it managed to come in at the sub 100 quid price... In my experience, though mostly with IBM servers... the hardware controllers are rock solid. I'm running about 10-15 IBM servers and 2 HP, 1 of the IBMs is quite old and doesn't have a hardware controller, so I installed 6.06.1 with mdadm... about a month or two later, one of the hard drives went down in a similar manner to what you explained. The other has been working fine ever since, for about a year now. (It's not an important server so never bothered fixing it). Running Ubuntu on top of software RAID is pretty new to me to be honest, I've only ran Ubuntu on HP hardware RAID before (DL360) SCSI drives etc.. Just installed it and walked away. If i decide to go down the hardware RAID route then I think that'd probably the card to use. Well, I'm no expert on earphones or sound quality etc., and I'm sure you've heard this before but, If you're prepared to spend about £20 the sennheiser PMX100s (or the other ones, the pmx are the ceckband which I prefer) are very good. Quite sturdy generally, and (to me) they seem to have very good sound quality. Hey DarkOtter, I had a look at Amazon for the pmx but they're not in-ear type of earphones that I'm after. (Did you mean to say that they have a neckband?) I had a look at their earphones range and they seem to have reviews that suggest the sound quality is awful (one suggests a constant electrical hum comes through them). I don't really know what to think about these ones: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-CX300-Eco-Headphones-Black/dp/B000S8EUNM/ They are £17 and are being sold by a preferred merchant (another word for amazon market place? I hear they're selling poor copies on there). I consider them pretty expensive but would be willing to pay that if they're a good pair. I'm not sure where to buy them from though or whether it's safe to buy them from the Amazon merchant/reseller/whatever they suggest. All I really want is a good pair of earphones so that I can listen to music and use my computer's sound whilst others sleep again yet it seems so difficult. Can't say I notice any sort of adverse sound quality in the sennheisers I've got, they've got the best sound quality of any headphones I've had before, and I've heard that of the ones I've got, and the headband version (px100 I think) just about everywhere (including amazon). As I say, I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure mine don't have the interference you mentioned. Regarding the headphones you sent a link for, people seem to have said the same things about them as they did on mine in the customer reviews. Do watch out for counterfeits, although you should be safe with amazon. They seem to have the same sound technology as my headphones, so they should be good on that score. I would pay attention to the guy who mentions eating/excercising with them on, although I would imagin this is true of all in-ear headphones (personally I really don't like using in-ears). My son's just started college, and one of the programs he'll be using is Macromedia (Adobe) flash. Neither of us want to waste disk space on putting XP back, so can anyone recommend an alternative for him to use at home? Ideally he'd like to be able to work on his files both at college and at home, but is there an open source program that will create/edit files that Flash will accept? I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 Some I've seen in Synaptic: Blender Epix1 GIMP-gap Stopmotion Whether these are what he needs I don't know - I know nothing about Flash! On the taster, day one of the computing tutors suggested c++ wasn't a worthwhile language learning. Here is my thoughts: 1) Cypriot have frequently fell victim of scammers that present themselves as representatives of charities so they look suspicious to anyone asking money from them. I do not blame them. So far we have been very careful not to ask money from anyone. Whatever money were donated so far was from member of the Team without nobody asking them. I believe we should keep it that way. 2) In this event we will probably have, besides geeks and linux fans, members of the academic community of TEPAK and it will look very cheap if we distribute T-Shirts during the event. Worse we may be accused that we organised the event as a fund-raiser which is definitely not the case. I suggest that people should ask people in the list and the forum on whether they are interested in pre-ordering T-Shirts for the event. We could also set up a special corner in our website for donations and order of T-Shirts. Lastly we should indicated to the buyers the true cost of the items and know how much money they are actually donate to the community. So if anybody is interested to take the responsibility of ordering T-Shirts and collect the money please step forward. Ao instalar o Skype ou outros aplicativos 32 bits, este pacote é instalado automaticamente como dependência. Tudo isso é transparente para o usuário. No caso do Flash, o pacote 'nspluginwrapper' também é instalado como dependência. O plugin Java da Sun eu não testei. Eu também tenho esta impressão, pois a velocidade angular deve ser a mesma em toda a superfície da mídia, logo, o tempo para completar um giro deve ser o mesmo, e como a parte mais externa tem maior raio e, por conseguinte maior circunferência, no mesmo tempo acessa-se mais dados. Na verdade a justificativa é essa, mas ao contrário. Se a velocidade angular é mesma em toda a superfície do disco, há uma densidade maior perto do centro, daí mais dados por segundo. Somente disquetes antigos tinham o início do disco na periferia do mesmo. Mas isso é transparente para o usuário. Nos particionadores simplesmente as partições mais à esquerda usarão os clusters de endereços menores e, podes ter certeza, estarão em uma área de acesso mais rápido. Me corrijam se eu estiver errado, mas com certeza a parte mais externa é o final do HD, é só ver em um CD com poucos dados gravados que ele ficam na parte mais interna. OOps1 Você já verificou que um CD é gravado do centro para a borda? Dê uma olhada melhor da próxima vez que queimar um CD com menos de 500M. A área escura vai ficar mais no centro. Pessoal! Vão com calma. Sei que tem esse problema de direito autoral e tal, mas a verdade é que a lista é pública e todo o conteúdo aqui criado/discutido/executado entra em domínio público, no momento em que você clica em Enviar no teu programa de correio. O chato é o cara ter conseguido fazer isso automaticamente antes dos outros e expor nossos e-mails para os spamers de plantão. Mas se ele tá ganhando notoriedade com isso podes ter certeza que daqui uns meses um montão de blogs vão estar fazendo isso. Talvez blogs bem visitados como o do Hamaker, Ubuntu Dicas e outros não façam a mesma coisa, mas os outros... Note outra coisa: por enquanto não é crime um blog copiar outro. Se passar a lei do Sen. Azeredo na Câmara dos Deputados aí vai ser. Mas a lista é pública e como tal ele pode utilizá-la. Pensando melhor: w=v/r e sendo w=cte v vai variar de acordo com r, que é maior quanto mais externo e sendo diretamente proporcional a v, enquanto maior r, maior v. Logo, como os dados ocupam o mesmo espaço físico por toda a superfície do disco e v=s/t, sendo t=cte, onde maior for v, maior será o espaço percorrido, logo, mais dados lidos. Assim, a borda é mais eficiente, a menos de detalhes técnicos que eu não conheça, só fiz análise física. OOps1 Você já verificou que um CD é gravado do centro para a borda? Dê uma olhada melhor da próxima vez que queimar um CD com menos de 500M. A área escura vai ficar mais no centro. Ok, acho que você se confundiu neste aspecto. A parte mais escura é onde há a queima da superfície, verifique em uma midia virgem as tonalidades e verifique que a borda possui a mesma tonalidade do cd virgem, logo, a midia é queimada (onde ficam os dados) do centro para a borda. [Ubuntu-BR] Escalonador de freqüência do proce ssador C2D
Boa tarde a todos, Aqui possuo um notebook Vostro com um processador T7250, 2GHZ e chipset GM965, já a algum tempo que tenho enfrentado um problema com o Ubuntu, que por algumas vezes o sistema de controle de energia para de funcionar, me obrigando a reinstalar o módulo de controle de frequência que uso (powernowd), depois da reinstalação volta a funcionar sem problemas, algúem já enfrentou esse problema? A versão do sistema que uso é a 8.04. Outra coisa, a plataforma Santa Rosa permite o uso do processador em um modo avançado de energia, onde o FSB e as memórias tem seus clocks abaixados pela metade, no Windows consegui com o RMclock fazer com que o sistema funcionasse em 6x100 com o menor Vcore possível, o que baixou o consumo do sistema em 2W, ficando na casa dos 10W, alguém da lista já conseguiu fazer o processador trabalhar nessa frequência no Ubuntu? Eu também tenho esta impressão, pois a velocidade angular deve ser a mesma em toda a superfície da mídia, logo, o tempo para completar um giro deve ser o mesmo, e como a parte mais externa tem maior raio e, por conseguinte maior circunferência, no mesmo tempo acessa-se mais dados. Na verdade a justificativa é essa, mas ao contrário. Se a velocidade angular é mesma em toda a superfície do disco, há uma densidade maior perto do centro, daí mais dados por segundo. Somente disquetes antigos tinham o início do disco na periferia do mesmo. Mas isso é transparente para o usuário. Nos particionadores simplesmente as partições mais à esquerda usarão os clusters de endereços menores e, podes ter certeza, estarão em uma área de acesso mais rápido. Me corrijam se eu estiver errado, mas com certeza a parte mais externa é o final do HD, é só ver em um CD com poucos dados gravados que ele ficam na parte mais interna. OOps1 Você já verificou que um CD é gravado do centro para a borda? Dê uma olhada melhor da próxima vez que queimar um CD com menos de 500M. A área escura vai ficar mais no centro. Dê uma olhada melhor da próxima vez que queimar um CD com menos de 100MB. A área escura vai estar no centro e vai ser bem menor que a área escura de um CD com 500MB de dados. Se voce usa mais Linux do que Windows voce pode optar por usar ext2 (discos conectados via USB é melhor que ext3) e no Windows instalar o driver ifs2ext, é rápido e sem nenhuma dor de cabeça. Não que NTFS seja ruim, mas ela é mais adequada para quem tem um dualboot e usa mais windows do que o Windows, na minha opnião. mapear assim não é muito eficiente, o windows usa controladores master e no windows 2003 dependendo da configuração voce não vê mais os compartilhamentos a menos que voce venha dum IP encarado como pertencente ao AD. Em poucas palavras, sempre depende. Vai em Locais-Conectar ao servidor e crie marcadores para seus compartilhamentos e como lanbuja voce pode memorizar as senhas se preferir. É um método melhor que usa smb:// no nautilus do mesmo jeito, no entanto, com a conotação smb://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/servidor/compartilhamento que é a URI que os servidores Windows agora mapeiam se o ponto de origem não é conhecido pelo AD. A opção -M do tar é multivolume, o tape enche e fica aguardando o próximo ser inserido. Se for usar o TAR não use compressão, já que provavelmente preferirá compressão por hardware. Cada software tem o seu modelo de usar discos sequenciados, daí voce precisa saber especificar qual programa pretende usar e descobrir como trabalhar com ele usando multivolume. Comparar uma mídia com 500MB e outra com 100MB mostrará essa diferença. Uma mídia multissessão é ainda melhor para ver isso. Houve alguma atualização delas ultimamente? Tente executar o comando que eles sugerem lá (ldd /usr/bin/skype | grep -i Qt) e veja se as estão sempre aparecendo no /usr/lib, como em libQtNetwork.so.4 = /usr/lib/libQtNetwork.so.4 (0x0011) ou se algum dos arquivos está em outro diretório, como em libQtCore.so.4 = /opt/nessus/lib/libQtCore.so.4 (0x004f4000) que o arquivo em questão está em /opt/nessus/lib. O ext2 e ext3 são identicos, só diferenciando-se de que o ext3 que pode ser muito indicado para quem vai transacionar varios arquivos (jornalling), se o servidor abendou, crashou ou reiniciou incorretamente, o ext3 é eficiente para limpar as inconsistencias e liberar o micro rapidamente. No ext2 voce teria de esperar um trilhão de anos pelo checkdisk terminar, porém ambos chegando ao mesmo resultado. Se voce vai usar o disco como externo na USB tal qual backup voce não vai estar transacionando tantos arquivos simultaneamente de modo que usar ext3 pode ser tiro de canhão para matar mosquito. Eu acho que o ext2 é o substituto perfeito para o vfat (fat16/32). O problema é que o google não é o único indexador, e vários robots estão varrendo os emails expostos. Isso até explica porque o numero de SPAMs na minha conta google aumentou significativamente. Se vai copiar então copia, afinal a lista é aberta - mas que pelo menos não cause o onus do SPAM aos participantes na lista. Todos os emails citados numa mensagem deveriam estar ofuscados, alguem aí envia o email para o zé administrador pedindo isso a ele ? Agora quando respondermos uma mensagem, teremos de ofuscar os emails em cima ou embaixo do qual respondemos ou cortar ela inteira. Se for isso, eu sou 100% a favor da idéia, acho que nossos emails podem ficar expostos apenas para participantes da lista, e não a mostra para qualquer um. Algo como as mailing lista da Apple faz, pegando uma thread qualquer como exemplo : http://lists.apple.com/archives/carbon-dev/2006/May/msg01029.html Os campos de emails são substituídos por [EMAIL PROTECTED] para quem acessar de fora da lista. Acho uma idéia bacana. 2008/9/8 hamacker [EMAIL PROTECTED] O problema é que o google não é o único indexador, e vários robots estão varrendo os emails expostos. Isso até explica porque o numero de SPAMs na minha conta google aumentou significativamente. Se vai copiar então copia, afinal a lista é aberta - mas que pelo menos não cause o onus do SPAM aos participantes na lista. Todos os emails citados numa mensagem deveriam estar ofuscados, alguem aí envia o email para o zé administrador pedindo isso a ele ? Agora quando respondermos uma mensagem, teremos de ofuscar os emails em cima ou embaixo do qual respondemos ou cortar ela inteira. Eu li aqui que pessoas aceitam a idéia de ele poder fazer isso, pois só por estar na lista, consideram o conteúdo livre para qualquer um. Sei não... eu não sou dessa opinião, pois estamos pensando em resultados benéficos, mas imagina se eu coloco agora a linha de comando de como FORMATAR O HD INTEIRO do usuário? E aí? Eu teria culpa por ter colocado numa lista, até então privada, e que o conteúdo foi surrupiado para um blog sem noção?? Pensem nisso com carinho, pois não acho esta lista de livre acesso. E enquanto não arrumarem uma solução... Se for usar o TAR não use compressão, já que provavelmente preferirá compressão por hardware. Cada software tem o seu modelo de usar discos sequenciados, daí voce precisa saber especificar qual programa pretende usar e descobrir como trabalhar com ele usando multivolume. Voce usar DAT a quanto tempo ? Mas eu acharia legal é esconder nossos e-mails nessa caso. Como eu dei o exemplo da mailing list da apple. Todos os emails, inclusive os de assinaturas são mascarados afim de evitar spams. Por exemplo, o meu email ficaria [EMAIL PROTECTED], e apareceria apenas o meu nome na mensagem. Reafirmando 2008/9/8 hamacker [EMAIL PROTECTED]: mapear assim não é muito eficiente, o windows usa controladores master e no windows 2003 dependendo da configuração voce não vê mais os compartilhamentos a menos que voce venha dum IP encarado como pertencente ao AD. Em poucas palavras, sempre depende. Se estiver com WIndows 2003 R2 e o administrador de rede configurou o serviço de FILE SERVER e não apenas um compartilhamento, não vai acessar apenas mapeando. Vai em Locais-Conectar ao servidor e crie marcadores para seus compartilhamentos e como lanbuja voce pode memorizar as senhas se preferir. É um método melhor que usa smb:// no nautilus do mesmo jeito, no entanto, com a conotação smb://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/servidor/compartilhamento que é a URI que os servidores Windows agora mapeiam se o ponto de origem não é conhecido pelo AD. Responde o que falei acima. mas ainda assim existe a possibilidade de mesmo desta forma não ser possível de conectar.
