Re: [ubuntu-art] IMPORTANT : Natty illustration wallpaper submissions group
Hey everyone I just wanted to reiterate what Vish is saying here about keeping the non photo submissions in the same group as the photo ones. I'll copy in here what I've posted on the Flickr group page. Hi everyone There seems to be some confusion around submissions for Natty. To reiterate what I wrote above and in the blog post update, we will be looking at all wallpaper submissions in _this_ group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/ubuntu-artwork/). If you've submitted to another group we won't see them as part of the judging process. We have stated that at least three wallpapers will be non photographic but the wallpapers should be considered as a set and I trust that the judges will be able to see the difference between a photo and an illustration and will select wallpaper submissions on their merit as a suitable background rather than whether they're rendered or a photograph. Having all the submissions in one group makes it much easier for the judges. Apologies to anyone who's confused about this process. The submissions to the other group look great and by all means leave your entries there too but if you'd like them to be considered as part of Natty then we'd love to have you submit them here too. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Iain I've been out of the office for the last few days and looks like it's been busy on the list so if any of this is unclear or causes undue concern please do find me on IRC or keep the thread going. Submissions are looking great and I think we have a strong set coming together. Thanks again everyone for all your hard work. John, Respectfully I add that once again the overwhelming conversation has been about organizing art, instead of art. It is pointless, boring, and lately highly divisive. We have already lost a team member that I highly respected. Arguing over flickr groups accomplishes nothing. absolutely nothing. Just PM the artists that have contributing to this other group. I have still not seen *any* valid argument from you as to why that group was still active after the illustration announcement; and why these PMs weren't already sent after vish's email. you know what, I typed all that but my original feeling was correct. Re: [ubuntu-in] Netbooks - suggestions and advise
Many questions some answers Ok the machine i got is the Samsung N 148 Plus I have successfully installed linux mint 10 (yes not Ubuntu, sorry about that) but mint is rather a bit more full featured) It cost Rs 16 K - with VAT etc. and 1 year warranty and 160 gig HD Came preloaded with Freedos and a Freedos CD as well. The battery is 4400 mAh and this works for 4 to 4.5 hours . However the real killer hard ware spec is the processor Processor 4x Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N550 @ 1.50GHz The older N 148 which i was asking for is no longer in production, this is the model that came. I suppose we could like with smaller HD and faster processor (no idea yet on power consumption) RAM is 1 Gig (1015 MB) It does not have a hard ware wifi on / off switch. 3 USB ports, 1 SD card port, 1 VGA output , 1 ethernet port, 1 mic, 1 headphone jack. Touch pad is nice - takes some getting used too, it does not seem to have a side scroll option (unless its the software that does that - am not sure) the keyboard is about 88 % of a regular (Lenovo thinkpad) keyboard. The Tab key is half size (a pain to start with but ok i suppose as use becomes regular). Under mint the Fn Brightness and volume keys do not work but also cause the keyboard to freeze. There is a bug (which i think applies to Ubuntu as well since under a live version of Ubuntu (Ultimate) the same freezing behaviour happened. Screen - its really clear and bright - did not yet test it out on the sun (as claimed by Samsung) but definitely a good screen to go by. Have not yet tested the webcam - ** Installation Used unetbookin to create a live usb stick and ran that for an initial live session. Then used gparted to partition to resize and create partitions. The original partitioning came with half formatted to freedos and the other half unformatted (74 Gig) The freedos partition is W95 Fat 32, originally it was occupying 48 MB of space, i gave it 110 MB, but that seems to have destroyed the freedos system and it won't go there any more . To engage the USB stick one needs to access the bios F2 and change the boot to reflect the USB media (if its not plugged in it does not show up on the boot options). Mint install didn't take much time, definitely less that 25 minutes. Had to install wvdial (used apton on a live mint session under virtual box) to get internet working. Am right now working on resolving the fn key issues. Another issue is the power indicator, the default gnome-power-manager does not enable showing of % or time. Presently one has to click on the icon to know what (time only) is remaining. AT present a tonne of updates are happening, once thats done then i can resolve the fn key issues as well as check the webcam. ram On Sat, Feb 19, 2011 at 3:39 PM, Kingsly John member+ubu...@kingsly.net wrote: +++ Ramnarayan.K [2011-02-01 13:13:00]: after finding out and follow up with various agencies we've shortlisted the Samsung N 148 1. “Looks like it’s worth it.” Try it. - NP-N148-DP05IN - Mini Notebook - Notebook | SAMSUNG. at http://www.samsung.com/in/consumer/pc-peripherals-printer/notebook/mini-notebook/NP-N148-DP05IN/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detailtab=feature Have you picked up/used said netbooks? [ubuntu-in] Time to look inwards.
Hi All. C-DAC is promoting it's BOSS Linux through newspaper advertisements. While it is a good thing, but mere promotion is not good enough. I find their advertisements insipid (released through the Government of India machinery) and fails to communicate the importance of Open Source. On a more personal note, I do find the issues being out of tune here. Imagine singling out a person because he has supposedly used dubious means to promote himself on Launchpad. More than the personal attacks, it would be worthwhile to discuss ideas, brainstorm on bug discussions and bring out something new. This reflects in our attitudes when we interact with others and barring few people on this list, most of us have failed to contribute in any manner towards a lasting project. Can anyone name ANY project, managed solely by Indians and being featured on the popular sites as must have? It is a collaborative effort, no doubt, but why do we see ourselves working on existing ideas? Slave labor anyone? Most of the people also fail to grasp the import of existing technologies or how the could be mashed up and deliver something of value. Hence, we Indians are always laggards, be it anything- IT, Open Source, Gnome, KDE or any other flavor- nothing is distinctly Indian. Hence more than the localization efforts and spending energies in hammering the riff raff on the mailing lists, it would be more instructive to hammer out ideas, find out what needs to be corrected in the system and overcome those issues. I don't code. I don't work in the IT industry. I only believe in open access. But at the same time, it's also important to have a cohesive approach and kick some ass. [ubuntu-in] Fwd: Kannada OCR
Tessersact will work in Ubuntu as sell as windows. -- Forwarded message -- From: M.N.S.Rao mns...@gmail.com Date: Tue, Feb 22, 2011 at 11:26 AM Subject: Kannada OCR To: fsmk-disc...@lists.fsmk.in Hello group members, Kannada is not having an OCR program to convert scanned images to text to further edit and this lack is making people to type full text for editing purposes. The advantages of OCR program need not be detailed for s/w people, but its requirement and use in enriching the language by putting the large quantity of the literature in text format on the web cannot be exaggerated. Having said the above I want to point out that there is a ray of hope as a free s/w Tesseract (http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/) is a program which can be trained for any language. This feature has to be exploited and a service to Kannada can be rendered by those who are knowledgeable in s/w and love their language. There is a very small group which is doing this work in bits. This group would like to invite more people to join. Thanks, MNS Rao -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
Re: [ubuntu-in] Netbooks - suggestions and advise
AFAIK, from Ubuntu 11.04 , there wont be a separate Netbook Edition of Ubuntu. Just one ISO with Unity on it and it will choose Unity or Gnome Classic depending on your 3D-Graphics capabilities. Also the lpia arch that was used for the Netbooks, has also been dropped for a while now. I am not sure how accurate these two points are, but I did come across them somewhere. Aria do this, I'm sure other suppliers do too. Saying that, it isn't too bad fitting a CPU into a motherboard. I found it to be more risky with the Athlon and Athlon XP CPUs where the die could get crushed under a badly fitted heatsink (when I worked at eBuyer it was a common thing to happen, customers would fit a heatsink incorrectly and chip the die causing a dead CPU which wasn't covered by warranty). Although with the Socket 775 (and socket 1156/1366) and the AM2/AM3 CPUs they have a metal plate over the core which protects them. As long as you're careful you shouldn't have any issues (some CPU coolers also come with heatsink compound pre-applied). Saying that, I have managed to break a pin off of a Phenom X4 once, but that was more of a case of my own stupidity :-P (luckily the CPU was free, but I still almost cried!). Thanks to all who replied. I've gone with aria.co.uk (never heard of them before!) and the bare bones Athlon II X3 450 3.20GHz machine. Right, because it does not have a visible effect now. If it were to trigger a build (and given a different name) then I don't think it would be seen as extra weight. From some discussions, it seems like a promising way to trigger building would be by the presence of a changelog entry that has an incremented version number and that has a real target series. (As mentioned in the LEP point you quote.) To me this has the advantage that the decision 'please publish this' is visible in the diff etc in what seems like an obvious place for the packaging workflow. It's also something that can be easily be tweaked by editing. It also seems attractively minimal in that something targeted at 'unreleased' or without a whole new changelog entry just cannot be built, so we can pun that with _should_ not be built. bzr mark-uploaded sets a bzr tag which is editable and transparent, but probably not quite so much so as file content. Are there are problems with doing this? The only concern I have is that this would be changing the security model of the archive to some extent. Instead of GPG signed instructions to publish, we would have somewhat implicit SSH-key signed, or cookie/oauth signed (in the case of a Land it! button on merge proposals.) I don't know whether that is a change we want to make. If it isn't then we either need to use GPG with bzr in some arrangement, or have an out-of-band GPG signed instruction to build. For large packages such as the kernel, libreoffice, X etc, where those are not in python that would imply we have to extract the intended state out of that and then commit it into another VCS just to trigger the upload? I would tend more to think of dput as the 'assembler' way of uploading, with pushing to a build branch being the 'best' way to do things. Generally you should not need to force a new way on people. If the new way is better people will switch and use it. Removing the old way should not be needed to achieve your goals should it? Right, we're not intending to force this on people. We want to offer it as an option for people that want to try it out. If there are reasons why people find it either doesn't work or isn't a good tradeoff for some packages, we'd like to work out why and then address that. Divergence between branches and uploads is a a problem that crops up in various places, including the documentation and keeping the package importer in sync. Ultimately we hope that developer groups will choose to say that particular packages must only be uploaded in branches to avoid people accidentally making things inconsistent, and we will give them a policy knob to express that. We don't have exclusive maintainers in Ubuntu, so I don't see how enforcing this on a per package basis is compatible with the Ubuntu maintainer philsophy. It also sounds very much like forcing it on people. The alternative of adding a specialized field in debian/control for packages that should generally only be uploaded from branch so that anyone who tries to dput the package gets some kind of warning (as discussed elsewhere in the thread) would, I think, deal with this case adequately while preserving the option to upload via dput should it REALLY be necessary in some case. There seem to be two variables here: does a package upload just give a warning, or does it block; and secondly is this configured in the package metadata itself or in Launchpad. On the first point I think we absolutely want to have it start out with just a warning. To be more accurate, we will actually start out with no warnings at all, and probably only turn them on when people feel that particular teams are over the hump of wanting to use it all the time. Regarding where it is done, I see no problem with doing it in debian/control. If it's configured in the package itself we would have the option to give a warning at the time people run dput rather than later sending mail back from Soyuz complaining about it. If you're going to put it in debian/control, then I think a Vcs-Bzr: field pointing at a UDD branch already encodes this information - 'apt-get source' already warns about it, we might as well have dput warn on the same thing. Apt-get source already warns on any vcs fields (including Debian ones), so I think if you're going to depend on those, then it won't be very effective. I think the idea of some kind of UDD specific 'are you sure' sort of option is reasonable. Failing to consult non-UDD branches doesn't have the same effect. It may result in things getting out of sync, but it doesn't result in history in the VCS getting over-written. Scott K P.S. I see those warning all the time and I confess I almost never look at the VCS. I don't recall it having been a poblem and I don't expect I'll change.

Voltei a estaca zero.
