We are looking for committed volunteers to test nVIDIA proprietary drivers on a weekly basis. The goal of this testing is to catch regressions and fix bugs before they reach a major audience. If you want to be part of the team you will need: 1. A computer with an nVIDIA (GeForce 7 or newer) graphics card 2. A spare partition on that system * If you don't have a spare partition you can easily create one. 3. One hour of your time per week 4. I'd like to introduce myself and state my interests
Hello everyone! I just subscribed to this mailing list. I'm a computer science student at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and have been using and loving open source software for just a couple years now. It is amazing how the Ubuntu project has been making free software more and more usable for the average user, and I'd like to contribute to the project to improve Ubuntu. In particular I'm interested in helping to get Wayland working for both Unity and KDE. Ubuntu, and all Linux distros can definitely benefit from a better windowing system. I'm not experienced with windowing systems. I'm quite tech savvy however, should be quick to learn. I do have experience with the CLI, and many of the Linux tools, so I should be able to help test Wayland. I have access to three systems, each with a different graphics card from each of the three major manufacturers, Intel, nvidia, and AMD. Here's a description of the hardware I have and their VGA compatible controllers using the lspci command: HP Pavilion laptop with nVidia Corporation C51 [Geforce Go 6150] (rev a2) Asus EEE pc netbook with Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) Homebuilt desktop with ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3200 Graphics Hopefully there is a developer working on Wayland who I could be of some assistance to. Bonsoir Jean, D'après moi, votre liste tronquée n'est qu'une impression car elle fait plus d'une page de votre affichage. Pour naviguer page par page à l'écran il suffit d'utiliser le caractère | suivi de la commande more comme suit: ls /home/jean/Musique/** | more Suite à cette commande, il faut appuyer sur la barre d'espacement pour faire défiler page par page et sur Enter pur y aller ligne par ligne. Pour envoyer le résultat de la commande ls dans un fichier texte, il suffit d'utiliser le caractère suivi du nom de fichier devant contenir votre liste comme par exemple: ls /home/jean/Musique/** mamusique.txt De cette manière, toute la liste de retrouve dans le fichier spécifié au format texte! J'ai lu rapidement dans une revue (/Ordinateur/ ou quelque chose de près) que Microsoft a annoncé que Windows 8 serait compilé pour fonctionner sous l'architecture ARM (comme dans les tablettes actuelles) et ce même si cela met Microsoft en compétition avec son éternel compagnon Intel. Si Ubuntu fait pareil, où trouverons-nous les logiciels compatibles avec l'architecture ARM. Hi there . Just back from the USA. While there, I had problems sending e-mails from two different connections (different ISP's). One was at the hotel, and the other at the home of a friend. Eventually, I discovered I could get the messages to go by using my GMX account (I rarely use that one). The difference is that my crosswire.org account will only send SMTP in TLS secured. GMX sends unsecured. Any thoughts on this? So I am preparing a presentation on the state Linux audio (and the wider open source audio community) for my LUG and looking for people willing to be interviewed. /etc/default/X and upstart jobs
I've run into a number of bugs where on upgrade from an older release,
the /etc/default files are no longer respected:

Essentially while porting things to upstart, the /etc/default files are
being forgotten. Not all packages have forgotten them, but some have.
Further, the format and location of these files is an anachronism from
before we had upstart. Noted succinctly by Colin Watson here:

We really shouldn't need these separate files because upstart jobs
should be extremely simple. So this is only a partial fix:
[ -f /etc/default/squid ] . /etc/default/squid
This also has a small effect on the system boot speed by forcing a
random seek into /etc/default to read this tiny file. One of the ideas
behind upstart was to alleviate these things by pulling all of this
information into one place (the job config) which is read entirely in
one sweep early in the boot.
So I'd like to propose that we convert these values into env lines in
upstart scripts upon installation. What I mean is that we should have a
policy where upstart jobs define any pre-existing variables
from /etc/deafult/foo with the same defaults:
So, for instance, in the openssh-server package, we have this
in /etc/default/ssh:

(and the env var added to the exec line)
Then the dh_installinit program should add code like this to the
maintainer script for upgrades:

Right now we are breaking on upgrade because people may not remember
that they modified /etc/default, and we're not stopping to tell them at
any point that we're going to ignore the file. Even if we keep sourcing
the file, this is less than ideal as one of the goals of moving a
service to upstart should be to simplify its start configuration.
This shouldn't count as a policy violation where a maintainer script is
editing a conffile, because we're simply folding modifications
to /etc/default/foo into /etc/init/foo.conf. They were going to get a
conffile warning about /etc/default/foo .. so now they're going to get
it about /etc/init/foo.conf, and it will include automatic configuration
warnings so they know how it happened.
Another less aggressive option would be to just warn the user that the
values in /etc/default/foo need to be manually ported forward.
I don't know if this warrants a full UDS discussion, but if it is a
viable option, I would like to see this started very early in the
oneiric cycle, and completed by a2 or at the very least a3.
So, does anybody
a) think we need a UDS session to discuss this
and/or
b) want to +1 on this so I can start filing wishlist bugs targetted at
oneiric?
Also this brings up another question.. where do we actually state our
policy differences from Debian policy?

I'm actually not sure if for all the GNOME 2.32 applications in GNOME translations will be packaged, as I believe this goes on an application by application basis. So it might be that for some only particular fixes are cherry-picked, while for others full tarball releases are packaged, which include translations as well. In the case of Evolution, for example, I see that the 2.32.2 point release was packaged and shipped in Natty. In any case, if you detect that your fixes are not shipped for a particular application, you can always manually import translations. Hi Ask, I believe this was explained a few weeks ago on the list, but just in case it wasn't, don't worry, the manual import feature is not completely gone. As we're enabling automatic imports from mirrored upstream bzr branches, translations should be imported from there for the packages where this feature is active. So translations should be up to date without requiring manual intervention, which is why the two options of doing uploads were removed, not only because they were confusing to people as well. In any case, you can still do what we used to call a user upload. The only thing you need to do to ensure your upload succeeds is to export the translation from Launchpad and merge it with the one you are trying to upload, or just add the X-Launchpad field from the exported one to the one you are trying to upload. Some sort of guarantee the strings in GNOME git will be imported on $UPSTREAM_IMPORT_DAY would be very highly appreciated. We've got more than 1300 translatable packages in Launchpad, so I hope you understand it's rather difficult to ensure that all imports are correct and up to date. I know about the ISO code, the problem is that ISO 639-2 is full of funny language codes on arbitrary bases (Egypt got 2, but following that logic Egypt should have a dozen on language codes at least). I'm afraid it give wrong political message about Ubuntu (like what happened with the so called Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia). There shouldn't be any political connotation to it if there is communication, which so far has been very civil. I'd suggest you guys talk about it off-list and let us know what you want us to do: if the team should be kept or taken away from the ubuntu-translators group. I'm not saying there should be, I'm only fearing it would happen. I myself would have been pretty angry if this happened few months ago; I would have felt threatened, but now after the Arabic revolution starting in Tunisia and spreading through Egypt all over the Arabic world I feel more confident about the Arabic unity, Arabs showed they are still one community speaking one language and suffering the same pain. So, as far I'm concerned, there is no problem to solve and I wish every one luck with there effort, I'm just worried how Ubuntu's current/potential users will see it (and believe me people are very religious about this issue). Hi all, I just want to clarify some things. First of all even though both languages share similar official names, Moroccan Arabic is so much influenced by it's amazigh substrat that there's absolutely no inter-comprehension possible between a speaker of Moroccan Arabic and a speaker of Arabic. The language has it's own phonology, grammar, conjugation and vocabulary. This fact alone justifies having a translation team. There's no way a Moroccan can understand Arabic without very serious schooling, a dramatic fact if you consider that Morocco has a literacy rate of only 50%. The pan-arabism theory has no place in this discussion. The only way to be apolitic here is to consider the fact that Arabic is de facto the mother tongue of no one in the arab world, but is only a vehicular language used by different people to communicate. Esta madrugada lutei para reinstalar o gnome-panel mas sempre da erro. Pior que tanto meu notebook 10.04 quanto o PC 10.10 estão com o painel bugado. Pra não ficar inoperante, estou recordando meus tempos de Windows e utilizando atalhos no teclado, até que enfim eu resolva o problema. Só de pensar em formatar e começar do zero já me da um desanimo... Já testei todas as formulas mágicas que o google me apresentou e nada. O meu também acontece isso, em algumas ocasiões, na maioria ele desliga normalmente. Uma coisa que eu noto é que quando estou com o konsole aberto (yakuake) e logado como root, quando peço para desligar ele pede a senha do meu usuário para fazer alguma coisa (que eu não me lembro agora), mas tem a ver com o konsole. Quando insiro a senha, ele continua o procedimento, então ele finaliza a sessão, e em alguns casos ele retorna a tela de login do gdm. Não sei se isso tem alguma coisa a ver com o seu caso, mas se for o mesmo do meu, o comando que o Mikhail te passou vai funcionar perfeitamente. Mas, baseado na minha experiência, vou te fazer uma pergunta: acontece isso toda a vez? Ou é exporádico? Olá Paulo, Você afirmou que nós estamos jogando a culpa no hardware por desconhecermos a causa do problema. Eu apresentei FATOS, o que REALMENTE ocorreu comigo. Mas um detalhe que é importante, é que no meu caso, o software que estava causando a lentidão era o Windows Live Messenger. Poderia ter sido com o Skype, ou não. Somente rodando ele na máquina para ver. Ah! E outra coisa, no netbook da minha mãe estava instalado o Windows XP. Tem mais esse detalhe. Por conta desses detalhes, pode ser que meu argumento não se encaixe no caso do Mathieu, somente testando com outro hardware mesmo para ver. E é isso que eu recomendo, pois é a tarefa mais fácil por enquanto. Nós técnicos de informática procuramos encontrar a fonte do problema por eliminação, então agente faz testes, envolvendo todos os sistemas envolvidos. Neste caso, temos as variantes hardware, sistema operacional, o skype propriamente dito, e a internet. Conforme os emails vão correndo, vamos dando dicas e eliminando as alternativas até chegarmos em uma conclusão. É fato, que ainda não sabemos a causa do problema, mas ainda não chegamos a uma conclusão final. Ainda não temos certeza de que é o hardware o causador da lentidão em chamadas de vídeo, mas não vai custar nada testar com outro computador para ver. É um bug do gnome-panel quando se usa o compiz com um motor de temas Murrine. As únicas alternativas definitivas são: 1a) desligar o Compiz; 2a) Usar um tema sem transparência: ex. Clearlooks. O resto é workaround, que pode ou não funcionar no seu sistema, dependendo de muita coisa. Para mim, um killall após um tempo da inicialização funcionou, mas não funfa um killall direto na inicialização. Já para o meu xará, funcionou. Para o Clóvis não funcionou nem uma coisa nem outra. Concordo que esse detalhe deveria ter sido mencionado desde o início, pelo bem do diagnóstico e do foco da lista. Nós técnicos de informática procuramos encontrar a fonte do problema por eliminação, então agente faz testes, envolvendo todos os sistemas envolvidos. Neste caso, temos as variantes hardware, sistema operacional, o skype propriamente dito, e a internet. Conforme os emails vão correndo, vamos dando dicas e eliminando as alternativas até chegarmos em uma conclusão. É... Eu costumava me apresentar como técnico em informática, lá pelo final dos anos 80 até meados dos anos 90. De lá pra cá parei de me rotular assim. Mas, direto aos fatos: o e-mail que eu respondi, abertamente, colocava a culpa no hardware, sem demonstrar efetivamente a tese. Portanto, não haviam provas, mas suposições que mereciam ser estudadas mais profundamente. Uma vez que essa lista é pública, e muitas pessoas recorrem ao seu histórico para solucionar suas dúvidas, achei por bem deixar claro que eu *não* concordava com essa posição categórica, e que achava que havia alguma precipitação em levá-la em consideração, naquele momento. Para verificar problemas de lentidão, fazem-se necessárias duas verificações primárias: 1 - O quanto os aplicativos estão consumindo de recursos da máquina, em ambos os sistemas operacionais. 2 - Consumo de banda pelos aplicativos em ambos os sistemas operacionais. No Ubuntu você poderia utilizar os aplicativos top e ntop (ou o monitor do sistema, no menu Sistema Administração) para isso. No Windows deve ter alguma coisa semelhante, mas, faz tanto tempo que não uso esse sistema, que não me lembro mais. Elas foram feitas? Com essas duas verificações você teria condições de, pelo menos, desconfiar quem seria o culpado, e não estaríamos trocando esses e-mails agora ;-) É fato, que ainda não sabemos a causa do problema, mas ainda não chegamos a uma conclusão final. Ainda não temos certeza de que é o hardware o causador da lentidão em chamadas de vídeo, mas não vai custar nada testar com outro computador para ver. Sim, é ótimo que isso aconteça, mas não foi o que entendi no e-mail que respondi. Assim como eu, muitas pessoas poderiam, equivocadamente, entender as coisas pela metade, ou de maneira contrária. Portanto, achei que a thread merecia uma correção de rumo, e deixei o meu exemplo como argumento de que eu não concordava com tese do culpado ser o mordomo... Digo o hardware, pelo menos por enquanto. O exemplo do Túlio ajudou a reforçar minha opinião. Daí (apesar de não ser bom nisso), consegui acertar o xorg para o monitor x resolução e o problema foi solucionado. Se o Linux reconhecer, basta copiar os arquivos que quiser para o disco externo. A janela do Nautilus com a pasta do HD externo irá abrir automaticamente. Uma ferramenta boa para backup (que eu uso) é o rsync, mas especificamente seu GTK+ front-end grsync. Recomendo, mas aí você, antes de mais nada deve ler sobre o rsync e o grsysnc, permissões, links, backups cheios e parciais e outras coisas, se não, não vai entender as opções do programa. alguém pode me ajudar? Diego, as versões 8.04 e 10.04 são LTS, logo você pode atualizar direto de uma para a outra sem qualquer problema. Para fazer o backup, basta você plugar o HD externo em uma USB 2.0 e realizar a transferência dos arquivos para essa unidade. Em seguida, crie o LiveCD do 10.04 e insira-o durante a execução do 8.04. O sistema te informará da disponibilidade de pacotes para atualização, é só seguir os passos. cara, tutorial vai ser complicado, mais podemos te auxiliar dando o caminho das pedras... Vc deseja acessar teu server por qual protocolo? Mauro só decobri q vc é de SP e que tem um monte de coisa sua sobre o bt, não axei o artigo sobre a instalação no pen Nethell axei esse programa que você falou no sforge (unetbootin) e aí funcionou. Mas eu já tinha usado o Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3.exe e ele deu o mesmo resultado. Estou no trabalho, não posso testar se o pen funciona aqui no momento. Boa tarde Paulo, Eu não afirmei. Eu dei a minha opinião, baseado na minha experiência profissional que, diga-se de passagem, não é pouca, graças aos deuses. Concordo que esse detalhe deveria ter sido mencionado desde o início, pelo bem do diagnóstico e do foco da lista. Falou tudo! Para verificar problemas de lentidão, fazem-se necessárias duas verificações primárias: 1 - O quanto os aplicativos estão consumindo de recursos da máquina, em ambos os sistemas operacionais. 2 - Consumo de banda pelos aplicativos em ambos os sistemas operacionais. No Ubuntu você poderia utilizar os aplicativos top e ntop (ou o monitor do sistema, no menu Sistema Administração) para isso. No Windows deve ter alguma coisa semelhante, mas, faz tanto tempo que não uso esse sistema, que não me lembro mais. Elas foram feitas? Isso se encaixa no quesito internet. Lembrando que vírus podem consumir bastante banda, e se tem máquina Windows na rede isso deve ser averiguado. Mas até onde eu sei não foi feita nenhuma investigação ainda neste sentido. Com essas duas verificações você teria condições de, pelo menos, desconfiar quem seria o culpado, e não estaríamos trocando esses e-mails agora ;-) Eu ainda teria uma questão a adicionar, voltando ao hardware e S.O. Se o sistema apresentar lentidão (mouse dando saltos, ou texto demorando a escrever) temos que partir para a verificação dos recursos disponíveis do sistema, os aplicativos sendo executados, e para aí então poder investigar o hardware. Sim, é ótimo que isso aconteça, mas não foi o que entendi no e-mail que respondi. Assim como eu, muitas pessoas poderiam, equivocadamente, entender as coisas pela metade, ou de maneira contrária. Portanto, achei que a thread merecia uma correção de rumo, e deixei o meu exemplo como argumento de que eu não concordava com tese do culpado ser o mordomo... Digo o hardware, pelo menos por enquanto. O exemplo do Túlio ajudou a reforçar minha opinião. Bem, mas vc entendeu pelo menos o por que eu insisti neste problema né?!?!?! =D Os fatos enriquecem nossa experiência, e às vezes, equivocadamente, jogamos a culpa em uma coisa baseada no que aprendemos. Pode ser que eu esteja certo, ou não. Vai depender das outras variantes, se todas estiverem em perfeita harmonia, então só restaria esta. Por este motivo preferi começar pelo hardware. Fucei um bocado e não encontrei esse artigo nem em english nem em pt :( Nethell axei esse programa que você falou no sforge (unetbootin) e aí funcionou. Resolvi postar aqui as várias formas propostas para restaurar o Painel do Ubuntu 10.04 e 10.10, e quero destacar qual foi a forma que melhor se adaptou as minhas máquinas: *Várias são as formas* Você pode através do terminal que pode ser acessado pressionado as teclas ctrl+alt+f1 (vai do f1 ao f6) e digitar o comando: $sudo killall gnome-panel Outra opção é: $sudo apt-get remove .gconfig .gcontrol .gnome .gnome2 ou ainda $rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .config .metacity Depois é só pressionar ctrl+alt+f7 para voltar ao desktop gráfico Outra opção seria apagar o arquivo .recently_used: rm/home/nome de usuário/.recently_used Outra opção seria mudar a permisão do arquivo: $sudo chmod 400 /home/VOCE/.recently_used Deixei por último a única opção que deu certo para mim: Botão direito do mouse na área de trabalho, escolher a opção: Criar Lançador e preencher assim: Tipo: Aplicativo Nome: um qualquer Comando: gnome-panel Comentário: Pode deixar em branco Vai aparecer duas opções para você escolher uma, eu escolhi Excluir. Aí é dar duplo click no icone do Gnome que vai parecer na área de serviço. Uma destas opções vai te salvar. Confesso que fiz todas, uma por uma e só na última pude respirar aliviado. Mas não fique tão animadinho. O Gnome-painel vai aparecer todo feinho e sem opção de desligar o micro. Você vai ter que usar o botão direito do mouse novamente, só que desta vez em cima da barra do Ubuntu (gnome-panel) e escolher Adicionar ao painel e escolher o botãozinho vermelho com um circulo no meio. Não desliga, porque não está reconhecendo o ACPI, devido um bug na BIOS. A tabela DTD foi feita para Windows e não Linux e em releases do ubuntu não-LTS, eles não consertam na maioria das vezes porque é corrido para equipe do ubuntu. Veja no histórico da lista, fiz um arquivo que rola até assembler, se você conseguir funciona. Portanto, discordo totalmente da conclusão de que o problema do skype seja a configuração modesta do hardware. Lembro que o skype já existe há mais de uma década, e funcionava em antigos Pentium MMX. Não vejo como uma máquina pequena, mas muito mais potente do que os antigos Pentium MMX ou AMD K6 da vida possa ser insuficiente pra isso. Vamos ver se consigo te dar algumas sugestões: 1 - Verifique, no Skype, em Opções Áudio, se a checkbox Permitir que o Skype ajuste automaticamente os níveis do mixer está devidamente marcada. Sem isso o comportamento dele fica imprevisível. 2 - No Ubuntu 9.10, e no meu atual 10.04, eu não consegui fazer o Skype funcionar direito com o Pulse Audio. Eu instalei o Alsa e assim consegui fazer ele funcionar. Sei que no 10.10 essa questão foi solucionada, porque fiz funcionar no notebook de uma amiga, sem essa gambi. Pergunta: qual a versão que vc está usando? 3 - Se estiver com o Alsa, verifique se os níveis de áudio do mixer (o Alsa Gui) são alterados, quando você faz uma chamada. O teste online do Skype é bom pra fazer isso. 4 - se estiver com o PulseAudio, verifique se o Skype aparece na lista de aplicativos que estão utilizando o servidor de áudio, no momento da chamada e, se os níveis de áudio são alterados pelo Skype. 5 - Verifique se seu microfone está funcionando em outros aplicativos, como o Gravador de Som. Boa Tarde! Fico feliz que meu exempo lhes serviu de alguma coisa. Mas aconteceram certos problemas com o Skype ontem que me deixaram desconfiado. Possuo uma Internet de 100KB (1Mb) e fui partiipar de uma conferencia com mais 6 pessoas ia Skype, em u Celeron 1GB de Ram, rodando o Lucid, modesto. Tirando que o Skype demorou uns 2 minutos para conectar, ficou muito boa a ligação. Mas caia direto! Poisé, descobri que tinha uma atualizaçao do Skype disponível pelo Gerenciador de Atualizações. Depois disso, conversei por mais de 1h30m sem engasgo nenhum! Veja se esta update aparece para você (Mathieu) e a instale, talvez ajude. Caso você tenha um conexão de internet, recomendo atualizar o sistema. Para isso, vá em: Administração Canais de Software E procure por qualquer coisa ligada a atualização distribuição. Depois, aindan no menu Administração, abra o Gerenciador de Atualizações e atualize, de preferência, faça o update para o 10.04, que é a mais estável. Com minha internet de 100KB (1Mb), atualizou tudo em 2 horinhas. Abração e bem vindo ao mundo GNU/Linux! Paulo, lei tudo com muita atenção... de inmediato posso decir que o microfone não funciona no aplicativo de Gravador de som. Pergunta: qual a versão que vc está usando? 3 - Se estiver com o Alsa, verifique se os níveis de áudio do mixer (o Alsa Gui) são alterados, quando você faz uma chamada. O teste online do Skype é bom pra fazer isso. 4 - se estiver com o PulseAudio, verifique se o Skype aparece na lista de aplicativos que estão utilizando o servidor de áudio, no momento da chamada e, se os níveis de áudio são alterados pelo Skype. 5 - Verifique se seu microfone está funcionando em outros aplicativos, como o Gravador de Som. Em março do ano passado eu fiquei 20 dias em em Nova York, e comprei outro netbook Acer, com N450, 1 GB de memória, HD de 150 GB. Durante esse tempo, eu usei o skype pra falar (com vídeo) com minha esposa em Curitiba/PR e com meus filhos em Guaratuba/PR, com um computador que tem uns 5 anos de idade (um Athlon XP 2200, com 1GB de memória e Windows XP). Eu usava o acesso wireless do hotel, minha esposa uma conexão de 1MBps (teórico) da Vivo e meus filhos uma conexão ADSL de 2Mbps da Oi. O skype foi perfeito para isso e não apresentou problemas com audio (às vezes engasgava com o vídeo na conexão da Vivo). Portanto, discordo totalmente da conclusão de que o problema do skype seja a configuração modesta do hardware. Lembro que o skype já existe há mais de uma década, e funcionava em antigos Pentium MMX. Não vejo como uma máquina pequena, mas muito mais potente do que os antigos Pentium MMX ou AMD K6 da vida possa ser insuficiente pra isso. O problema, eu sinceramente acredito que seja o seu Netbook, mesmo o Carlos afirmando o contrário. Teve um dia que eu e minha família fomos para Joinville, onde meu primo mora lá, e ele tem uma internet de 2Mbits na casa dele, com um roteador wireless espalhando o sinal. Era festa de noivado da minha prima, e ela queria ver o tio dela que tava na Espanha. Pegamos o netbook da minha mãe, que é um MSI com processador Intel Atom 1.6 e 2Gb de RAM, e através do WLM (Windows Live Messenger) fizemos uma ligação de áudio/vídeo. Ficou uma m como se a internet fosse lenta. Ninguém entendia ninguém, e o vídeo ficava lagado. Daí eu peguei meu notebook, um HP DV4-2112BR, com processador AMD64 Dual Core 2GHz e 3Gb de RAM, e refizemos a ligação pelo WLM, e para minha surpresa (pois também não acreditava que fosse hardware o problema) rodou lisinho lisinho. Foi da água para o vinho a mudança. Inclusive minha mãe ficou de cara com o netbook dela hehehehe Minha dica é: tente fazer a ligação com outro hardware, um notebook ou um desktop mesmo, que na minha opinião é ele que não está aguentando o tranco.
