[ubuntu-in] Help with installing RSS Owl
Hi All, I am on Ubuntu 10.10 and need to install RSS Owl. Although it's easy to download and install (as on the web site instructions) but I am looking for a ppa so that any new updates or builds are automatically downloaded whenever I run the update command. I have found liferea to be a good RSS reader. Also Thunderbird has RSS capabilities these days (in case you are already using it as mail application). It has some nifty features; but it canno sync with Google Reader (as yet). I think Liferea does but well, so be it. The only good thing about RSSOwl is the newsfilters (something like you have for email), but it can get ungainly. All the effort, was seriously not really worth it :( Unfortunately, there is no replacement for Google Reader...as yet. Thunderbird, as I mentioned, is still very basic. I had written about an ideal RSS reader earlier in the mailing list but there is no interest for it's development. There are some good and bad parts about other readers and none is perfect in the Linux world. Mutt is a great example but it is terminal based. I'd be glad for once if it had a GUI which would make it very easy for working around it. Is someone interested? Or else teach me how to code. Tell me where to look for since I have zilch coding experience. RSS is very powerful means of getting information; sadly it is underused. There are lot of things you can do with it and bare minimum get the news in real time. Autre détail, la date n'importe pas tellement... on peut le faire avant, pendant ou après le lancement officiel. Par le passé différentes villes le faisaient à différentes dates. Si on le fait la semaine du 18 (mon choix préféré), à toutes fins pratiques on a la même version que la release finale et on subit pas les problèmes de téléchargement du à sa popularité. On est aussi mieux informés pour répondre aux questions de notre entourage lorsque vient la vraie release :) C'est aussi le congé de pâcques non ? Si je ne me trompe pas on aurait plus de gens disponibles... à vérifier. Bonjour, Le modèle de mon mini est : HP Mini 110-3053CA et le Produit: WQ816Ua#ABC (Le P/P ?) J'ai essayé le terminal avec la commande sudo halt: il s'arrête et bloque au deuxième bouton rouge sous l'enseigne UBUNTU comme lorsque je l'arrête avec la commande régulière. Par contre pour le redémarrage avec la commande: sudo reboot il redémarre effectivement correctement. Hi this is slightly off topic but the answer could be useful to others. Looking at the amazon kindle it looks as if i can use it to open / read normal pdf files such as the one for the ubuntu manual, if this is the case it would be useful. I used calibre to convert a series of pdf's (funnily enough for an ou course) into the more native format for my kindle as I found reading the pdf to much of a strain on the eyes. It seems to work well, however its not a perfect conversion formatting can sometimes go a bit funny and images don't seem to come though, but works for my purposes. It's even delivered to your device via WiFi. For native PDFs Briss (http://sourceforge.net/projects/briss/) works well to crop margins so it's a better fit. As an aside, if you're into comics or manga the Kindle will read images straight from a zip (.zip, .cbz) and keep track of the last page viewed. I've found that processing the images using Mangle before zipping gives a good quality output on the Kindle. I'm an IT tech at a school and I want to demo Edubuntu with thin clients to the
senior management and help them see the light.
I have an Edubuntu server with two nics joined to the primary windows domain
and I can log on with domain credentials and everything is AOK. I used
LikewiseOpen 6 to join the server to the primary domain.
So, on my Edubuntu server eth1 is connected to the primary domain and has a
static IP. eth2 also has a static IP and is the DHCP for the thin client
subnet, connected to a switch. IP forwarding is enabled.

So far, so good: I can log on the thin clients with one of the local accounts
specified on the Edubuntu server and with that account I can surf the net and,
if I supply domain credentials, browse the primary domain.
Problem I have is:
I can't work out how to log on to the primary domain with a Active Directory
account directly from a thin client. If I try DOMAIN\user to log on, after
giving the password, the password screen refreshes and 'domainuser@11.*.21.*'s
password' appears under the blank password box. The IP in that message is the
IP for the subnet and not the primary domain.
I feel like I'm miss-understanding some basic simple step but I just can't
figure it out.

I have a Kindle 3G (the new one with both GSM and WiFi) and it is great for reading ebooks. PDF rendering depends on the source materials, and is not as good as it could be. I just came back from the US with a Barnes and Noble Nook Color. It is a full-colour 7 1024x600 Android tablet that ties in with their in-store/NA based ebook business (which of course only works with a US credit card and perhaps a US IP -- I'm not using it anyway). It is much better for reading full-colour PDFs, magazines, etc. It is easy to root, and that opens up the full Android Marketplace. At $250, it's not expensive. Anyway, I like both the Kindle and the Nook for different things and still have a massive pile of paper books as well. The Kindle is a great ebook reader in daylight, and has an amazing battery life (weeks) with wireless off. It works, but claims of service coverage (Nigeria, UAE, China, etc) is pretty optimistic. The Nook is full colour, so technical diagrams are better. Battery life is worse (one full day). You have the full Android App Store. You do have the Kindle app, as well, if you want to access your Amazon books. I am not sure how hard the Nook is to get outside of North America. Most other cheaper Android tablets (Archos, etc) have lower resolution screens, so I steered away from them in the past. This is easy on the Kindle with native formats (or on Android/iOS with the Kindle app -- same thing). With PDF, I am not so sure, but I would not expect the Kindle to do it -- at least not well. i can also buy electronic books cheaper than paper, copies I don't think eBooks offer value for money, with the exception of Public Domain works. I have a lot of classics on my Kindle (and Nook) but nothing that I had to pay for. I also find a paper copy to be easier to leaf casually through (and yes, I do leaf through at least one Linux book casually: Unix and Linux System Administration Handbook, Nemeth, et al). Of course electronic is easier to search. any suggestions or ideas It depends how you read, but if most of your source material is PDF, I would go with the Nook Color (if you can get it). If you opt for the Kindle, make sure that you can get the books in a native format (by converting or otherwise -- most stolen copies will be scans and therefore not convertible). I would skip the Kindle 3G and just stick to Wifi -- there's not a huge difference in price, but I also think there's not much difference in usability. And, just to tie this closer to the list topic, on the Ubuntu side, Calibre is your ebook management application. It is very good. How starting Ubuntu Maverick Live CD/DVD with Orca?
Hi, I'm blind and a Ubuntu newbie. It seems since Maverick the boot menu has been changed. Is taht right? I ask because I try to start from the compact disk to start Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat with Orca. Then later going to install on my local hard drive disk. Install on netbook
Hi I´m needing right now ubuntu studio on my netbook, and I don´t have an internal nor external dvd unit, so I just can´t install it normally with the burnt ISO. Anyway I found out how to do it with the Unetbootin app, and the cannot find cd fix (cdrom-detect/try-usb=true) because it can´t be done otherwise... maybe you should check that yourselves and do it for us newbies... :) it would be really helpful The thing here is that I can´t access an ethernet cable in order to retrieve the packages from the web... this installer doesn´t recognize my wifi card, Is ther any way of doing it? multiarch library support in Natty and Oneiric
Dear developers, Well, it's been a long time coming, but it's finally here. As of today, it is possible to install library packages of other architectures on your natty system through multiarch. That means that commands like this one can now be configured to work in an amd64 chroot: $ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer:i386 Thanks to everyone who's helped get us to this stage! We're still some way away from being able to do this on the desktop, however, since this command currently wants to remove lots of amd64 libraries and replace them with the i386 ones! Which is, in fact, the point of this mail. There's a core set of libraries that have now been bootstrapped for multiarch in natty, but there are obviously a lot more libraries that will need to be transitioned for multiarch before we can even begin to think about dropping ia32-libs from the archive. Many more, in fact, than we will have a chance to get to during the natty cycle, since we are well past feature freeze already and there are almost 50 libraries yet to be converted before we can even run the above apt-get command on a desktop, let alone address /all/ the use cases of ia32-libs. Still, with a freeze exception granted by the release team and most of the tricky dependencies already dealt with, I'm going to try to hit that target in time for the beta freeze. This would be a lot easier if it weren't a one-man operation, so if anyone would like to help converting a stack of libraries, please grab me on IRC to coordinate. This is *not* an open invitation to convert arbitrary libraries to use the multiarch paths; freeze exception or not, moving libraries around on the system carries some significant risk of breakage, and needs to be done with care and a clear understanding of the consequences - and a committment to fix any of the fallout in order to not jeopardize the beta coming up next week. If there are other (small, self-contained) library sets that you think are important to convert over for multiarch in natty, please talk to me and we can try to coordinate this. With the caveats out of the way, here's a link to some documentation describing step-by-step how to convert a library package to the multiarch paths: http://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch/Implementation This documentation is written with both Debian and Ubuntu in mind. Before 11.04 is released, I expect we'll see dpkg 1.16.0 landing in Debian unstable, so even if we don't get everything into natty that we want we can still help move this transition along in Debian so that oneiric opens with as complete of multiarch support as possible. So if you're interested in helping with multiarch, please have a look at that page. And please help extend the documentation with anything I've missed! Dear Developers, Testers and Passionate Hardware Platform Enthusiasts, One of the decisions from UDS last October was that we wouldn't be releasing any unverified images in Natty. In working through all the daily builds we do, there are some release images without folks signed up to verify that the images created are ready to ship and make a go/no go decision on them. If you have the necessary hardware for a specific release image and an interest in seeing that a specific product is available with the Natty release, we need some volunteers to sign up to do the sanity testing for the product images without contacts listed in: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyNarwhal/ReleaseImageContacts What's involved you ask? - A commitment to test the specific image on the following days: 3/29-30 (Beta 1), 4/12-13 (Beta 2) and 4/26-27 (Proposed final image). - Work with the Ubuntu testing team to make sure the results of tests for that image (and any bugs found) are recorded on the ISO tracker for that image. - Notify the Ubuntu release team of any issues that should be documented in the release notes. [Ubuntu-BR] Ubuntu travando na tela de login.
Amigos, bom dia ! Estava atualizando o Ubuntu instalado em um notebook com dual boot, XP e Ubuntu. Acontece que ele estava apenas na bateria e a energia acabou no meio do processo. Resultado, o grub aparece normalmente, seleciono o Ubuntu e ele vai até a tela de login, quando trava. Se seleciono o XP ele funciona normalmente. É possível a recuperação do Ubuntu ? Não sou administrador do XP. Olá pessoal ! Estou com o seguinte probleminha: instalei o ubuntu 10.04 na máquina do meu cunhado, tendo criado um usuário para tal. Para ele utilizar, criei outro usuário. Os dois usuários pertencem aos grupos sudo e root, porém, quando o meu cunhado está usando com o usuário dele e vai executar algo como instalar programas pela central do ubuntu, ele pede sempre a senha do usuário que eu criei para instalar o ubuntu, em vez de pedir a senha que criei para ele. E, estranhamente, para outras tarefas, pede a senha do usuário dele próprio. Qual é a melhor maneira de resolver isso, mantendo um mínimo de condições de segurança ? Eles estão me pedindo que eu vá até lá e remova tudo o que peça senhas, pois não aguentam mais rs rs rs. Boa tarde, Para instalar qualquer programa em um gerenciador de pacote sempre vai precisar da senha de root. Será Eu até tava matutando sobre isso esses tempos atrás se não tinha como evitar as telinhas chatas de pedido de senha. Pois realmente é complicado Hoje mesmo eu fui fazer uma alteração no proxy do sistema, e quando pedi para alterar para todo o sistema, foi solicitado 2x que eu digitasse a senha, não que eu tivesse errado, mas por que ele fazia antes uma alteração (não sei aonde) e depois no Gconf. Às vezes incomoda um pouco realmente... Amigos, boa tarde ! Tentei a solução proposta pelo Zandre mas, na tela de login ( GDM ), quando teclo CTRL+ALT+F2, a tela continua travada, não acontece nada. Não consigo acesso ao terminal p/ dar os comandos. Alguma outra sugestão ? Como acessar o terminal ? Pessoal, queria a opinião de vcs.. Estou usando o Ubuntu 10.04, está redondinho... perfeito. Mas ja saiu o 10.10 e logo logo vem o 11.04... Alguem aqui ta usando 10.10? É estável...? vale a pena a mudança? Ou melhor esperar o 11? Você precisa de algum recurso que está na versão 10.10 e não pode ser instalada na 10.04? Se a resposta for não, não tem porque mudar, se for somente por curiosidade tente uma máquina virtual. Eu uso a 10.10, e sai da 10.04, não por problemas, mas gosto sempre de usar versões atualizadas, com novidades, e estou usando tanto em casa, quanto no trabalho, o 10.10, funcionado perfeitamente, senti uma melhora no desempenho no 10.10. Estou doido pra usar o 11.04, mas esse nem no dia do lançamento eu instalo na maquina de produção, esperar um pouco, a mudança está sendo muito grande, então talvez demore um pouco para amadurecer. 2011/3/22 tiozaoamb tiozao...@gmail.com Uma simples curiosidade. Galera, boa noite! Instalei o Xampp e o Eclipse PDT no meu note. Gostaria de saber a maneira correta de configurar o ambiente pro eclipse poder manipular os arquivos do projeto, que a princípio devem ficar no /opt/lampp/htdocs, porém neste diretório ele não tem as permissões para escrita. Neste caso, qual a melhor dica que vocês dariam sem ter que dar um chmod 777? Como posso configurar o apache pra servir no diretório /home/diego/www, por exemplo? Beste, Normaal gezien spreken wij op deze mailinglijst Engels, maar omdat deze mail specifiek gaat over evenementen in Antwerpen zal ik deze keer in het Nederlands antwoorden: Wij zijn 3 keer per jaar aanwezig op een dipro computerbeurs in antwerpen Expo. Deze beurs is net een paar weken geleden geweest, de volgende is op 8 mei. Wel is er zondag 27 maart een computerbeurs in Mechelen waar ubuntu-be aanwezig gaat zijn. Op die computerbeurzen zijn we vooral bezig met het promoten van ubuntu, bij een publiek dat meestal al wel van ubuntu heeft gehoord, maar nog een zetje nodig heeft om het echt effectief te gaan gebruiken. Vaak kunnen we ze overtuigen door ze even te laten plaatsnemen achter een pc met ubuntu, en ze te laten zien hoe gemakkelijk het allemaal is. Natuurlijk zijn meer ervaren gebruikers altijd welkom om mee te helpen, of om een praatje te komen doen op rustige momenten. Не удалось. Прописал то что сказал xinput-calibrator (для этого пришлось создать ему новую папку и файл в ней, изначально их не было), перезапустил машину, и ничего не изменилось. У меня, насколько я понимаю, из тач-устройств только этот ILITEK. Добрый день! Я недавно впервые установил Ubuntu 10.10, ОС очень нравится, но очень огорчил тот факт, что недавно пропал звук, поизучав информацию в интернете заметил, что такая проблема встречается не только у меня, но к сожалению пока не смог найти четких инструкций, как решить эту досадную проблему, все советуют разные варианты, но до конца не удается решить эту проблему. Можете ли Вы как-то помочь в этом вопросе, если да, то конкретно опишу, в чем выражается проблема. Заранее благодарен. Привет всем, подскажите программу для планирования сети. Что-бы была возможность создать графическую схему расположения компьютеров и сетевых устройств, присвоить им IP-адреса, задать параметры TCP/IP Наличие готовых шаблонов серверов, свичей, роутеров, шкафов, рабочих станций и прочие приблуды приветсвуется. Всю жизнь рисовал от руки или на доске маркером )) а вот сейчас понадобилось официально так сказать, а мне ничего и в голову не приходит. У меня скрипт, оказывается, через wacom-tools работает, у тебя производитель другой, сорри. Вернемся к нашим баранам :) То содержимое файла, что выдала тебе утилита, еще надо немного править строку MatchProduct!!Name_Of_TouchScreen!! Чтобы она соответствовала устройству. Или давай попробуем зайти другим путем. Смотри вывод xinput list, найди там id своего устройства и скинь сюда вывод xinput list-props ID (замени ID на ID своего устройства, у меня это 13, например).
