Re: [ubuntu-uk] End of Skype on Linux?
I don't believe at all that this is the end of the linux client! Microsoft are a huge concern who are out to make money. I believe they see there own failings in the VOIP world and like most other companies where technology is short they buy in from outside. I see this as a positive step and coming from me a MAC and Linux user and a prominent hater of the beast that is Microsoft says a lot. Develop the product make it more open thats the way forward! Skype as you all know is just one of the many VOIP/SIP providers out there this just means it will make the competition work harder and show what is possible with free software. [ubuntu-uk] Booting to ubuntu with VM, for now -- advice needed
Hi -- so this is being typed from an Ubuntu VM under Mac OSX. I've given up the hope of dual-booting for now -- maybe I'll try again sometime later with 10.04. However, I have 8 gig RAM on my MBP, yet seem only to be able to assign less than 4 gig to my ubuntu image in VirtualBox -- I'm guessing because VirtualBox isn't clever enough to figure out that I have two modules (both report okay in Snow Leopard). Is it possible to run a VM that has access to the majority (or, potentially, all) of your processor and RAM? Is there a better tool than VirtualBox that would allow me to do this? I don't want to get too invested in this image if there's a better way to do it out there. Cheers for any all help, Doug. Re: Social Media Team
What I like to do for my clients is to first build the foundation for our strategy, and that foundation is based upon the age group of who we are trying to attract. I'm going to safely assume that we will mainly be targeting males between the ages of 18 and 35. Among these people, I'm also assuming that those who use ubuntu (and ubuntu studio or other distros) are tech saavy. Furthermore, our audience does not have a set location they can be from anywhere in the world (which is actually quite an advantage for us). Now that we have an audience specified, we should select what kind of social media websites would be best for not only attracting users of US but also other linux enthusiasts/musicians and potentially new users. The two services that immediately come to mind are facebook and twitter, but I'd also be open to incorporating soundcloud or vimeo into our strategy to showcase the work done with ubuntu studio. Ultimately it depends on how many people are dedicated to joining this team. If we had 10 people, we could allocate responsibilities so not just one person is doing all of the work. Ideally what we should do in this case is make a master username/email and password for our social media sites, allowing us to sign into any service and make small changes, updates, posts, etc. We could also have someone dedicated to promoting ubuntu studio to blogs and other tech sites. Let me know if you'd be interested in joining a social media for ubuntu studio, I think it would be fun building an audience! -luis Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -Original Message- From: Scott Lavender scottalaven...@gmail.com Sender: ubuntu-studio-devel-boun...@lists.ubuntu.com Date: Mon, 9 May 2011 13:30:46 To: Ubuntu Studio Development Technical Discussionubuntu-studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Reply-To: Ubuntu Studio Development Technical Discussion ubuntu-studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Subject: Re: Social Media Team -- Ubuntu-Studio-devel mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel -- Ubuntu-Studio-devel mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel

The fundamentals of how upstart will work in 12.04 LTS are the same as in 10.04 LTS; upstart in 12.04 will include incremental improvements to the usability and instrumentability for system admins, this is not something *new* that admins are being asked to invest their time in learning. Hi - Your points are well taken, and -- especially if not everyone agrees that systemd is superior -- it's fair to keep upstart going for a while before jumping to the conclusion that systemd is better. This comment still implies to me you consider systemd better, but I do not understand why you have this view? Everyone immediately jumped on the X windows bandwagon many years ago (mostly as a foil to Sun's NeWS system), and we haven't been unable to get out from underneath using network stacks for locally displayed graphics for the 20+ years since. My point about learning a new system was based on the observation that there still seem to be a number of kinks in upstart; in particular, we've had timing problems with autofs and statd, both of which intermittently refused to start until we tweaked the upstart scripts. Why does your having to change a configuration file imply we should throw away a core part of the Ubuntu system? The problem you have described is a packaging/maintainer configuration file issue for 2 different packages, neither of which are Upstart itself. Also, the fact that packages like apache still don't have an upstart script indicates the technology isn't fully mature. Under these circumstances, if everyone agreed that systemd is better, then it makes more sense to switch sooner rather than later. http://i.imgur.com/usftZ.png This is very funny, but there are some points raised in Lennart's comparison: http://0pointer.de/blog/projects/why.html that merit careful reflection; e.g. shell-free bootup, mount/automount handling, and disabling of services without editing files, to name a few. There are other points that look interesting, but I don't know enough about what he means to comment. Lots of features does not necessarily equate to a superior system. the design of Upstart follows the Unix way: do one job and do it well. When required, Upstart relies on helpers (such as upstart-udev-bridge). This design is fundamentally sound - *iff* there were a problem in the udev bridge, it cannot bring down init, which would of course cause a kernel panic. Adding every possible feature into a critical system process such as init should only be considered with extreme caution IMHO. No one, however, can tell me that the accepted method for disabling services in upstart isn't a kludge! :) The rationale for Upstarts behaviour, which is of course different to SysV-like systems, is that if you install a service, you'll want it started on boot: guaranteed. In 9 out of 10 cases, this is the right answer. For the remaining case, say a database dev who has a handful of db engines installed, but doesn't want them all auto-started on her underpowered laptop, we provide the ability to disable that job. Yes, the interface is simple, but does it really need to be any more complex than it is? It's quite another to try to roll back an init system change, which touches every single package that's involved with system startup and requires changes across a very broad set of foundations, desktop, and server packages. If we should ever do the migration to systemd, .. Which to be clear, we are not considering currently. then we should certainly not drop the upstart integration/jobs along the way, but keep both upstart and systemd jobs in the packages for a while (at least until the next LTS), so that you can switch between the two with the init= kernel parameter (that's in fact how you can test systemd on Debian/Ubuntu/everywhere else today). I agree in principle that we should do this *should* we ever consider moving to systemd, but there is the issue of ensuring that both the Upstart and the systemd jobs are guaranteed to result in the same behaviour. How we would do this, I don't currently know. Then rolling back is by and large just a seed change, and perhaps flipping back an option in grub. Well, let's not forget that we are about to put Upstart into the initramfs for Oneiric. Removing Upstart is not in any plan I'm aware of, but to be clear to all, *if* we ever did do it, it would take a **considerable** effort to do IMHO so would need very careful justification, planning, and extremely thorough testing. This would even allow us to do things like installing systemd for new installs, but keeping upstart for upgrades until there is a transition plan for how to deal with custom upstart jobs that administrators created (which seems to be the most difficult thing to handle in the transition).
Ruby on Rails)!!!

Via console: sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list E adicione a linha a seguir no final: deb http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/repository remastersys/ Ou via Synaptic: Menu Configuração = Repositorios = aba Outro Software = botão Adicionar = coloque a mesma linha acima.
