In the source code it is already set to UTF-8 (# -*- encoding: utf-8 -*-). I looked around the code and the same way to represent Unicode characters is used. Therefore, it probably is a programming convention. If memory serves right, I believe it's rather a leftover from an old bug (now fixed) in gtkbuilder or glade where translations for unicode chars where not loaded, so my recommendation would be to ask the developers whether there is a genuine need for \u2026 instead of '…', and then go with what they say.
