[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently

2012-06-01 Thread Kai Nickel
#207: This is an interesting observation. I can confirm that for me the
freeze happens only if I manipulate something with the mouse (like
clicking a button, scrolling, ...). It NEVER happened that I came back
to my PC and found that it was frozen while I was away.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently

2012-06-01 Thread BotoxBimbo
Same here... applied all updates.
Nothing helps.

In my case it also sometimes leads to corruption of a file in my IDE
(IntelliJ's workspace.xml), probably because for some reason IntelliJ
keeps this file open at all times while I'm working with it.

The observation of the mouse: I guess this is true.
Definitely when you have not been working for a minute, and return back to your
PC to continue, and start handling the mouse again. Also no mouse pointer
visible anymore.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-06-01 Thread Abhishek Kharvadi
Maybe I am wrong or just plain stupid, but I did a fresh install of
Ubuntu 12.04 precise 32-bit and selected Install Third party thingy
and I still get the driver 295.40 in the NVIDIA-XCONFIG. Am I doing
something wrong? If the fix is released, then should I not get 295.49
instead of .40?

I haven't tried any of the suggestions above as I do not know how to
install the beta driver 302.xx and by default I am not seeing the 295.49
driver yet in my system.

I think I am doing something wrong here.

Thanks,
Abhishek

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 921321]

2012-06-01 Thread Kdebugs
Congratulations on going stable! I am experiencing this issue as well,
and this is the one bug keeping me from using Nouveau. I would really
like to have xrandr 1.2 support, so please let me know if there is
anything I could provide to help troubleshoot this.

Notes:
Thinkpad W510

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT216 [Quadro FX
880M] (rev a2)

When using the nvidia driver, the following option needs to be added to the X
config file.
Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1

When using the nouveau driver, brightness controls works fine. After
suspend and resume, brightness stuck on max.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007183] Re: Xorg crash

2012-06-01 Thread ron.neville
There is a file _sbin_Xorg.0.crash in /var/crash.

When the system does successfully boot,
running ubuntu-bug from the command line gives me the opportunity to create
this bug.

Sometime our systems with this hardware and software combo boot OK.

Sometimes we get a black screen.

Sometimes we get a black screen with a mouse cursor.

Sometimes we get a text login prompt.
After a text login, sometimes startx will work, sometimes not.

Sometimes we get GRUB menu (I think this is from GRUB failure
recovery?).

Sometimes we get
mountall: Disconnected from Plymouth
Pressing enter at this point allows the system to boot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007588] [NEW] quantal 1 June i386.iso external monitor

2012-06-01 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

External monitor on notebook Acer Aspire 5253 System Settings Displays
attempt to set resolution:

Failed to apply configuration: %s

GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: No such interface
`org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.XRANDR_2' on object at path
/org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/XRANDR

This is Live, same error occurred yesterday's i386.iso after install.

Easily reproducible. There are a bunch of complaints in .xsession-
errors, attached.

2012-06-01 Thread jerrylamos
Not a show stopper, I turn laptop screen off manually. Of course screen is at
default 1024x768 instead of 1280x1024.
BTW, quantal boots on MAX BRIGHT (!) which I can turn down manually. I boot a
lot during testing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1001007] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 hangs

2012-06-01 Thread poet_imp
While this is reported against Ubuntu, I am experiencing the same thing
in Kubuntu. I have a dual monitor system with nvidia drivers:

$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 295.53 Fri May 11 23:28:10 PDT
2012
GCC version: gcc version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5)

$ lspci | grep -i nvidia
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G86 [Quadro NVS 290] (rev
a1)

When I run with desktop effects turned off things actually run quite
nicely. No problems. However, if I turn on the desktop effects I can use
the system for 5-30 minutes before it freezes. Most of the time my mouse
moves but that is it. keyboard is dead. I can ssh in from another
machine and I see xorg is running at 100%. It does respond to a reboot
command.

btw the workaround mentioned above in post #4 does not work in ubuntu.
It seems the reference hid-multitouch is somehow different in ubuntu,
and not accessible to root. Is there some other workaround.

2012-06-01 Thread Steve Riley
More follow-up. Today, before starting my VM, I changed the VM's
settings. I selected Disable acceleration for binary translation and I
deselected Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI.

And good news: no freezes! I've been moving my mouse about the desktop
with reckless abandon all day, and there's been nary a hiccup.

My initial reaction, though, is that it's pure consequence. Unless, of
course, everyone reporting this bug also happens to be running some kind
of VM? I doubt that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-06-01 Thread Kyle Miller
I found running Unity2D to be a rock solid work around. My desktop is
using an nVidia 9800GT. My notebook is an nVidia Optimus system on a
Dell XPS 17 using Bumblebee for a video driver. I have had no problems
with Bumblebee.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1005321] Re: Several pointing device related problems occur when a touchscreen is installed

2012-06-01 Thread Marcelo
I've just found bug Bug #774938 and think that the erratic mouse cursor
movement that I described right after Besides, there are several other
problems related to the touchscreen itself: is related to that bug.
I use a dual monitor configuration and I'm using coordinate transformation
matrix to restrict the touchscreen to one of my monitors. I use two 1920x1080
monitors positioned one above the other. The bottom monitor has a touchscreen,
but the upper monitor does not. Without modifying the coordinate transformation
matrix, X thinks that the touchscreen covers the entire desktop. I use the
following command to restrict the touchscreen to the bottom monitor:
xinput set-prop Quanta OpticalTouchScreen Coordinate Transformation Matrix
1 0 0 0 0.5 0.5 0 0 1

Before this command is executed, I can click by tapping the touchscreen
and can drag itens or draw using the touchscreen without the mouse
jumping to the bottom of the screen, but the position where X thinks I'm
touching does not correspond to the actual position on the screen, since
X thinks the touchscreen covers the entire desktop and not only the
bottom monitor. After I run the xinput command, X interprets the
touches at the right positions, but all those collateral effects take
place.

However, the problems mentioned in items 1 to 5 in the beginning of the
bug report (and many others mouse related problems) always happen, no
matter xinput was ran or not. They go away if I install the package
xserver-xorg-input-tslib, but then the touchscreen is disabled (xinput
list then lists two touchscreen devices with the same name, but the
touchscreen does not respond)

Is there any test I can do to provide more info that could help to solve
this issue?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007690] [NEW] Dialog after Your screen is running in low-graphics-mode not accessable without mouse

2012-06-01 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

I have some kernel problems at the moment. That's another problem. but
every time I boot to the graphical user Interface and I get the message
Your screen is running in low-graphics-mode, I cannot do anything
anymore with the graphical gui. as long I don't get my mouse working.

The first message with the simple button can easily be clicked away by pressing
return key.
But the next dialog showing 4 option boxes does not get focus and I can try
whatever I want (pressing tab, space, esc, return etc.) I can't close the
dialog or choose any option. The only thing possible is pressing ctrl+alt+f2 to
switch to a text console.

This bug appears in Ubuntu Precise 12.04 but was already there in
earlier versions of ubuntu.

Especially diagnostic tools SHOULD be accessable without a mouse...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-01 Thread Eloy Paris
Bryce,

I've experienced a complete system freeze twice and both times I was not
watching video. Based on comments made here I think other people that
have experienced the crash while they were not watching videos. The new
bug title that you chose is misleading. Where did you get that this only
happens while watching videos?

In my case, both times I experienced the freeze it happened right after
I finished using Alt-Tab to switch applications. Complete system freeze;
the machine would not even respond to pings anymore and both keyboard
and mouse obviously dead.

This was happening on my work machine and I could not afford the
instability so I grabbed a pristine 3.3.7 tarball from kernel.org,
compiled that, and that is what I am running. My uptime is now 7 days.

My machine uses an integrated Intel graphic controller.

Cheers,

Eloy Paris.-

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-01 Thread Bryce Harrington
On Sat, Jun 02, 2012 at 01:55:03AM -, Eloy Paris wrote:
 Bryce,

This was happening on my work machine and I could not afford the
instability so I grabbed a pristine 3.3.7 tarball from kernel.org,
compiled that, and that is what I am running. My uptime is now 7 days.

Great, then do a git bisection to find the patch that fixes it.

I've experienced a complete system freeze twice and both times I was not
watching video. Based on comments made here I think other people that
have experienced the crash while they were not watching videos. The new
bug title that you chose is misleading. Where did you get that this only
 happens while watching videos?

The bug description:

I recently installed newly released ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit version on
my desktop. And it is frequently freezing, for the first few hours it
ran smoothly and when I started watching videos it started freezing
randomly.

If this bug has become a hodge podge of people's unrelated issues, then
perhaps it's going to be unworkable and we should just close it as
wontfix.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-01 Thread freeman70
I am not trying to blame anyone. It looks like whoever accessed the
status of this bug probably only read the original post and didn't read
the entire thread. If they had, they would know it affects people under
a wide variety of circumstances and doesn't only affect people watching
video. That is why this hard freeze is so difficult to troubleshoot.
It is hard to pinpoint the exact cause of the lock-up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007722] [NEW] xterm doesn't display all the information

2012-06-01 Thread Andrey Gelman
Public bug reported:

Regular output in XTerm results in a few blanked (black) lines in the top or
bottom of the window.
It happens when some application prints out something - top of windows stays
black.
It happens when I scroll the window contens with the mouse wheel - top or
bottom of the window (depending on scrolling direction) remains black.

This problem persists from Oneiric, and was observed (by me) on
different computers.
