[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal
** Description changed: Following the AMD decision to change to a new driver support model for Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000 and HD 2000 series cards as per http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy- radeon_linux.aspx , fglrx-installer installs non-working drivers. + + NOTE: All AMD cards based on R(V)6x0 and R(V)7x0 chips are affected. + This includes some FirePro/FireGL/FireStream products as well as certain + RadeonHD5x00 mobility parts which are rebadged RadeonHD4x00 parts. If + unsure, please consult + http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units I suggest the addition of an fglrx-legacy package to install the AMD legacy drivers for users with older cards or patch the current code base for use with these cards. @Christopher Penalver: The Firestream 9250 is based on an RV770 (RadeonHD 4x00 series) chip, so it is included in this bug report. I've tried to update the description to be more concise. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 685321] Re: webgl doesn't work with chrome
Because it doesn't work with Chrome, like reported in comment #7. It's the same way on Precise with Chrome + Mesa, the GPU process crashes. I don't know why it crashes on Chrome but works with Firefox and Chromium. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 685321] Re: webgl doesn't work with chrome
Chromium is the development version of Chrome , right? Sort of like Fedora is to RHEL, right? So the Chromium support you mention should be coming to Chrome sooner or later. From what I've been able to work out the reason it doesn't yet work in Chrome but does work in Firefox/Chromium is as follows (please bear in mind I am not am expert but have simply tried to learn through a bit of research online). Although Chrome/Chromium/Firefox use WebGL which is based on OpenGL ES, I have learned from reading Mozilla bug reports that there is more than one way to execute a command in an OpenGL program. There are a variety of ways a browser can ask the drivers to do the work, via various driver functions. This seems to consist of a variety of alternative and fallback functions and paths in the drivers if the requested function is not implemented in the driver or is not supported on the hardware. Some of these fallbacks will be slower than the originally requested function. My guess is that Google has only implemented some these alternatives and fallbacks recently. Of course Mesa's radeon drivers (r300g and r600g, particularly the latter which is for the newer R600 and later cards) could also be improved and extended to support the functions currently being requested by Chrome. But this is only my best guess and I don't have any evidence to support my hypothesis. Google could probably tell you and as I said earlier I would assume that they have already talked to ATI/AMD about this for the binary fglrx (Catalyst) driver and to the kernel, Mesa and DDX developers about this for the open-source radeon drivers. Anyway it seems that support is on it's way. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685321 Title: webgl doesn't work with chrome To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/685321/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 685321] Re: webgl doesn't work with chrome
I should add that when it comes to improving and extending Mesa, historically Ubuntu/Canonical has made very few upstream contributions to Mesa, the Linux kernel, cairo and other important technical components. They seem to prefer to focus on developing visual and usability components (eg notification bubbles, the Software Centre and the Unity desktop). They have been criticised for this in the past by various people such as Novell's Greg Kroah-Hartman. Basically the criticism boils down to taking without giving back. Whether you agree or not one thing is clear - it is extremely unlikely that they (Ubuntu/Canonical) will even attempt to address this issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal
Dave Lentz, thank you for your comments. Regarding them https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1058040/comments/38 : The Firestream 9250 is based on an RV770 (RadeonHD 4x00 series) chip, so it is included in this bug report. At this point, it is not included, as your point is in direct contradiction to AMD's own website, as noted in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx- installer/+bug/1058040/comments/36 . I've tried to update the description to be more concise. If you're unsure, consult http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units; Please stop quoting unofficial, non-AMD resources as fact. If it is not from AMD's website, or from an AMD representative, then the information you are providing is untrustworthy, and conjecture. Hence, please do not add this into the description. @Sean Fitzpatrick: I've marked your bug a duplicate of this one. Please do not mark it a duplicate. For more on this please see above. Thank you for your understanding. ** Description changed: Following the AMD decision to change to a new driver support model for Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000 and HD 2000 series cards as per http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy- radeon_linux.aspx , fglrx-installer installs non-working drivers. - - NOTE: All AMD cards based on R(V)6x0 and R(V)7x0 chips are affected. - This includes some FirePro/FireGL/FireStream products as well as certain - RadeonHD5x00 mobility parts which are rebadged RadeonHD4x00 parts. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1075035] Re: 1002:9452 fglrx graphics broken on upgrade with AMD FireStream 9250
Sean Fitzpatrick, thank you for testing the WORKAROUND. Regarding your comments: I tried the workaround, but ran into some problems: - in step 5, the command apt-get -y reinstall was not recognised. The reinstall seems to be the wrong code. It was. It has just been updated to: sudo apt-get --reinstall install xserver-xorg-video-intel - step 6 failed because there was no package fglrx-installer. The repository I added in Step 2 didn't have this package, but it did have plain ol' fglrx, so I tried installing that instead. This also was incorrect. This has been updated to: sudo apt-get -y install fglrx As well, could you also please try the PPA with instead: sudo apt-get -y install fglrx-updates Thank you for your understanding. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1075035 Title: 1002:9452 fglrx graphics broken on upgrade with AMD FireStream 9250 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1075035/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1075296] [NEW] nomodeset needed for radeon 7000
Public bug reported: I recenty started to migrate from Lucid (10.04) to Precise (12.04). Unfortunately, I have noticed that the video rendering performance has decreased with Precise. Videos with a resolution of about 720x576 that are played smoothly on Lucid are either flickering or shortly hanging in-between while played on Precise (the standard video player tends more to flickering, in vlc I get hangs). I should mention that I have a quite old graphics card, it is identified by the X server as Chipset: ATI Radeon VE/7000 QY (AGP/PCI) (ChipID = 0x5159) After experimenting around quite a while I found out that I get back the old performance if I boot with nomodeset, so I guess there's a bug in kernel modesetting. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1075296] Re: nomodeset needed for radeon 7000
moved to linux kernel package, which contains the modesetting ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu) ** Tags added: apport-collected precise ** Description changed: I recenty started to migrate from Lucid (10.04) to Precise (12.04). Simon Strandman, thank you for your comments. Regarding them : I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 now btw so I don't have the problem any more. In 12.10, are you using the version of fglrx-installer that comes in the Ubuntu repositories or 12.8 downloaded from amd.com ? ** Description changed: With the open source radeon driver the system correcty resumes from sleep, but after installing fglrx or fglrx-updates the screen is just black when resuming. add 1: I'm on 3.6.2-030602-generic and have removed the 3.7.0-030700rc2 So what you want me to do is to install new mainline kernel and try it and send the apport-collect -p linux 1072672, right? add 2: all the test (text files) I have committed where from the 3.7.0-030700rc2 kernel. add3: nope, it's better then the mainline kernel which has unstable the whole Xsession. In other words the problem is still present. btw I have found a post of a guy who runs the Arch linux on the same hardware as I have without problem. http://zenforyen.wordpress.com/2012/07/16/experiences-with-thinkpad-l530-on-arch-linux/ I also found this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1076954 where they speak about the same issue and one guy on the end mentioned: ...After a full upgrade (back to 3.2.12), everything seems to work fine with Vt-D off (including virtual box). Turning Vt-D back on in the BIOS recreates the problem. Thanks for posting your solution I have enabled the Intel virtualization in my BiosAccording to this http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=MTAzNzk it might be a problem. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068341] Re: No way to specify correct dependencies for dkms packages
A kernel update was suggested by the software updater today (Nov 5) and it broke my nvidia driver module again. If I weren't familiar with the terminal and what strings to pull to get things working, my 12.10 system would have essentially been broken by a stable update three weeks after launch day. Sorry if I'm just adding to the noise here, but I feel that breakage of graphics drivers (that worked in 12.04 and many prior releases) is a very significant problem. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal
Ok guys, stop fighting. Before changing anything, lets establish the facts. According to Sean's lspci in bug 1075035 he has a: VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV770 [FireStream 9250] [1002:9452] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device [1002:0502] Thats the same ASIC as used in the Radeon HD 4000 series cards - eg. see the description in bug 1071101.
