llvm-toolchain-15 will presumably need to be promoted to main in jammy-

NEW packages into main; presumably because it's in main in lunar that'll
be ok, but I'd like to check with the MIR team that my assumption is
correct.

Right, but as far as the archive is concerned, libdrm-tegra0 itself is
unused :)

What code *does* use libdrm-tegra0, and how sure are we that it doesn't

2022-03-01 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Ok. So it seems that the bug *exists* in Focal, so now we just need to
verify that the bug is *fixed* by the proposed package.

@angie78 - as you seem to suffer from the bug, can you try to verify
that the proposed packages (from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libx11/+bug/1782984/comments/106
) fix the bug? Once we've got verification that the bug is fixed, we can
release the packages into -updates and everyone can benefit!

Anyone else is also welcome to verify!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1957094] Re: on-demand mode doesn't work with nvidia-390

2022-02-01 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
For the nvidia-settings upload, the new wording looks somewhat strange:

++ " in on-demand mode (only if nvidia version >=
450; "
++ "otherwise, the behavior will approach to "
++ "performance mode). This option is applied
after "
++   "a system restart.");

Perhaps better wording would be something along the lines of “(only
using nvidia driver versions >= 450. On earlier drivers this behaves the
same as performance mode)”?

Also: is this a translatable string?

Alternatively: how hard would it be to *detect* the driver version, as
ubuntu-drivers-common does, and grey out the option?

** Changed in: ubuntu-drivers-common (Ubuntu Impish)
   Status: Triaged => Fix Committed

** Tags added: verification-needed verification-needed-impish

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * In any Ubuntu series, if user using a old GPU (which supported by
nvidia-390 only) then issuing glxinfo will get "Error: couldn't find RGB
GLX visual or fbconfig". Which mean the Xorg doesn't load dri driver
  correctly.

  [Test Plan]

   * install nvidia-390 on nvidia-390 supported system.
   * prime-select on-demand
   * reboot
   * glxinfo
   * after applying this patch, it will fall back to "ON" mode after reboot.

+ * install nvidia-450 on nvidia-450 supported system.
+ * prime-select on-demand
+ *
+
  [Where problems could occur]
   * Since nvidia-390 doesn't support on-demand mode (RTD3 either). If a user
stays in on-demand mode with 390 without problem, the after upgrading u-d-c and
reboot. The mode will fall back to "ON" mode.
   * From my point of view, it's fine because nvidia-390 doesn't support RTD3.
Thus, the nvidia will always stay in "Active" stage no matter which mode it is.
  * While there is no way to inform the user about this change, changing to the
only supported default will avoid breaking GLX.
-

  ---

  The regression from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-
  drivers-common/+bug/1942789.

It impacts Jammy and Impish so far.

  [Steps to reproduce]
  1. Find a GPU supports nvidia-390
  2. ubuntu-drivers install nvidia:390
  3. prime-select on-demand
  4. glxinfo

  [Expected result]
Shows intel or nvidia drives monitor

  [Actual result]
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

Since we are all agree "on-demand" mode as default mode.
Pre-talk with Alberto, on-demand doesn't support with nvidia-390 (no matter
RTD3).
We could consider to make it as performance mode and leave a note on
nvidia-settings.
  I'll prepare some test packages.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1949553] Re: Backport packages for 20.04.4 HWE stack

2021-11-23 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
@Timo: I notice the libdrm backport drops the valgrind integration. I
know it's disabled in (at least) impish, but is there any particular
reason for it to be disabled in the focal backport?

It seems pretty unlikely that anyone would notice, but the diff required
to keep the valgrind annotations enabled also looks small, so maybe we
should?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1782984] Re: Assertion `!xcb_xlib_threads_sequence_lost' failed with multiple applications

2021-10-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Has anyone tried PCManFM or Inkscape on focal? It seems that this update
doesn't fix GNOME Shell on focal, but *maybe* that's because Shell is
hitting a different bug?

If this can be verified to fix PCManFM, Inkscape, or something on focal
we can release it and open a new bug for GNOME Shell on Focal.

If this *doesn't* fix something on focal, we need to work out why -
maybe it needs more changes backported, like bionic did?

If FCManFM & Inkscape don't hang on focal *without* this update then I
think we can release the bionic update and close the focal task.

2021-09-14 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
That seems like we should be able to extract a verification from the
errors.ubuntu.com results. Is it possible to query crashes with a
specific dependency version? Seeing no crash reports with libx11
2:1.6.9-2ubuntu1.3 would suggest this is fixed.

On the other hand,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libx11/+bug/1782984/comments/110
suggests that this may *not* be fixed in focal.

2020-03-23 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Mutter actually *does* support 10bpc, just not with zwp_linux_dmabuf_v1.
It seems that mesa will incorrectly try to use formats advertised by
wl_drm but not zwp_linux_dmabuf_v1.
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/4294 fixes
this for me.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1719945] Re: Silently fails in Wayland session

2017-10-05 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
It's certainly possible to log out, log in to an Xorg session, and then
log out again/reboot to switch to NVIDIA. *If* you know that's what you
need to do.

Since nvidia-settings silently fails *and* we default to Wayland if
possible users who don't know this is what you need to do will find it
very difficult to switch back from Intel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1696797] Re: [regression] Mir EGL clients all crash with SIGSEGV in XGetXCBConnection()

So, the problem here is going to be the EGL platform detection - it's
failing to detect Mir, and is instead trying (and failing) to connect to
an X server.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away

2017-03-20 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Ah, OK. We've been arguing with different assumptions.

Symptom: Firefox's menus don't work
Bug: XMir's focus behaviour differs from a spec-compliant X11 window manager.

One solution here, which is what I've been suggesting, is to implement
spec-compliant focus behaviour in XMir.

But you're correct that simply making the popups non-focusable Mir
surfaces will make XMir behave more like a spec-compliant X11 window
manager, should make it behave *enough* like a spec-compliant WM to
resolve the symptom and may well be simpler to implement. This could be
an expedient solution for the short term.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away

2017-03-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
So, specifically, in this paragraph:
“
In both cases the shell must not implicitly change the focus while the user is
interacting with Firefox, but Mir/Unity8 is doing just that. And the unfocus
event on the Firefox main window is tricking Firefox into closing the popup
(and menus) immediately.
”

The phrase “the shell” is wrong. The *X11 window manager* must not
implicitly change the focus. Unity8 is not the X11 window manager; XMir
is.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away

2017-03-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
I'm clearly communicating poorly, so I'll try again:

The X11 focus, and the Mir focus, do *not* need to be the same.

In fact, a stronger claim holds: X11 focus and Mir focus *cannot* be the
same unless we want to implement pieces of X11 window management in Mir.

This does not mean simply ignoring focus events; it means translating
Mir focus semantics into X11 focus semantics.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away

2017-03-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hm, that's correct. XMir *could* defer acting on focus lost until a
timeout or focus-gained event, but that would be a heuristic.

The “Locally Active focus model” is a fairly X11-specific thing. It's
from a time when applications were built in a one-X11-window-per-widget
fashion, and so a textbox was an individual window that could be
focused. I don't think it's going to be useful to Mir clients.

What might be useful - and would give XMir enough information here - is
to augment the focus-lost event with the new focus window, if they're
from the same session.

Alternatively, a “Session-focus” concept would also solve this. I seem
to recall us talking about such a mechanism in the past...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away

2017-03-16 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
(The reason why bug 1671771 is not going to fix this is that Firefox¹
*may* set input focus to one of its subwindows, and will behave weirdly
if that doesn't work. You can't just set “no focus” on the Mir surface
corresponding to Firefox's subwindow and then delegate to Mir's input
focus.)

¹: And, if not Firefox, then there'll definitely be *some* X11 app which
does this ☺

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away

2017-03-16 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
I think bug 1671771 is fundamentally the wrong solution (to this
problem; it does need to be fixed).

The problem here is that XMir is not behaving like a spec-compliant X11
window manager. Unless we want to require Mir servers to implement X11
window management, this is not something that we can do with extra Mir
support.

One relevant section of one of the relevant X11 protocols is
https://tronche.com/gui/x/icccm/sec-4.html#s-4.1.7

Specifically - Firefox is using the Locally Active focus model. It has
the focus attribute set to “true” in the WM_HINTS, and has set
WM_TAKE_FOCUS on its window.

This means that it (a) expects to receive focus (and receives focus
in/focus out events) but (b) only ever expects to be given focus to its
top-level window, and will manually manage the focus of its subwindows
itself.

XMir is in a position to do this - it doesn't matter which of the
client's windows Mir thinks has input focus. As long as *any* of the
client's windows have input focus XMir will receive input events and can
set the X11 focus as appropriate.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1196239] Re: Add support for fake modes on laptop screens which only have one

2016-11-07 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
So, migrating discussion from a bug marked as duplicate:

OK, there's a design discussion to be had here.

In these cases, mirout is correct - your display has exactly one mode it
can be driven at. X adds a whole bunch of fake “standard” modes, but
they're just that - fake. Selecting one of the fake modes does not
change the video mode; instead, it scales the rendering up to the
monitor's mode.

What is the user requirement here?

I'd prefer the Mir API to accurately reflect the capabilities of the
system, but one of those capabilities is that we can scale content. If
the user-requirement is “I'd like everything on my screen to look
bigger”, we can do that.

Indeed, this seems to be the Apple approach - https://support.apple.com
/en-au/HT202471 - there's the “optimal resolution” button, and then the
“make everything larger or smaller” option.

(Note that the user requirement *cannot* be “I'd like to change the
display mode”, because Unity 7 doesn't change the display mode in these
cases ☺)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1628744] [NEW] Modesetting picks incorrect card as output master

2016-09-28 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

I have a rather strange setup, with an nvidia and AMD card, both with
connected displays. (Connected to the same monitors, in fact).

The AMD card is the EFI primary card, and is what drives the kernel
framebuffer. This is correct; it's the one that's plugged into both
monitors.

modesetting, for soume reason, picks the nvidia card as the output
master and the AMD card as an output slave. This is good, in that it can
drive both my monitors, and bad in that rendering on the nvidia card is
literally seconds-per-frame (presumably it lacks reclocking support).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1420334] Re: [enhancement] Missing client API for relative surface movement

2016-09-13 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
I'm +1 for Andreas' mir_surface_start_window_drag(MirEvent const*
initiator), -1 letting a client arbitrarily move their surfaces around.

This will be easier for GTK and Qt than mir_surface_move(), as this is
the behaviour already implemented by xdg-shell.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1547864] Re: libinput doesn't handle EV_KEY event with a value of 255 (BUTTON_CANCLED), to support Android home buttons

2016-02-28 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
>> My concern with adding cancellation behaviour is that there'll be no
existing client or toolkit that expects it, and we can't make it opt-in
(like the opt-in touch cancellation support).

>That's a good point but extra events are kind of opt-in already with
zero code change for most clients. If clients see an event they don't
understand they should ignore it and not treat it as an error.

Yeah, they (probably) won't crash; they'll just have broken behaviour.
Failure to act on a BUTTON_CANCEL means that the client is erroneously
treating that button as pressed, with whatever behaviour that entails.
Which is exactly this bug; adding BUTTON_CANCELLED support won't
actually fix this bug without also fixing clients :)

As you note in your subsequent responses, the click-move-release case is
handled explicitly, either in the application or sometimes in the
toolkit (for the “clicked” event). If we add a KEY_CANCELLED state to
the existing KEY_DOWN/KEY_UP states, we'll likewise need to fix the rest
of the universe, starting with the toolkits and moving up :)
