[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1957094] Re: on-demand mode doesn't work with nvidia-390
For the nvidia-settings upload, the new wording looks somewhat strange: ++ " in on-demand mode (only if nvidia version >= 450; " ++ "otherwise, the behavior will approach to " ++ "performance mode). This option is applied after " ++ "a system restart."); Perhaps better wording would be something along the lines of “(only using nvidia driver versions >= 450. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away
Ah, OK. We've been arguing with different assumptions. Symptom: Firefox's menus don't work Bug: XMir's focus behaviour differs from a spec-compliant X11 window manager. One solution here, which is what I've been suggesting, is to implement spec-compliant focus behaviour in XMir. But you're correct that simply making the popups non-focusable Mir surfaces will make XMir behave more like a spec-compliant X11 window manager, should make it behave *enough* like a spec-compliant WM to resolve the symptom and may well be simpler to implement. This could be an expedient solution for the short term. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1625846 Title: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1625846/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away
So, specifically, in this paragraph: “ In both cases the shell must not implicitly change the focus while the user is interacting with Firefox, but Mir/Unity8 is doing just that. And the unfocus event on the Firefox main window is tricking Firefox into closing the popup (and menus) immediately. ” The phrase “the shell” is wrong. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away
I'm clearly communicating poorly, so I'll try again: The X11 focus, and the Mir focus, do *not* need to be the same. In fact, a stronger claim holds: X11 focus and Mir focus *cannot* be the same unless we want to implement pieces of X11 window management in Mir. This does not mean simply ignoring focus events; it means translating Mir focus semantics into X11 focus semantics.
Hm, that's correct. XMir *could* defer acting on focus lost until a timeout or focus-gained event, but that would be a heuristic. The “Locally Active focus model” is a fairly X11-specific thing. It's from a time when applications were built in a one-X11-window-per-widget fashion, and so a textbox was an individual window that could be focused. I don't think it's going to be useful to Mir clients. What might be useful - and would give XMir enough information here - is to augment the focus-lost event with the new focus window, if they're from the same session. Alternatively, a “Session-focus” concept would also solve this. I seem to recall us talking about such a mechanism in the past...
(The reason why bug 1671771 is not going to fix this is that Firefox¹ *may* set input focus to one of its subwindows, and will behave weirdly if that doesn't work. You can't just set “no focus” on the Mir surface corresponding to Firefox's subwindow and then delegate to Mir's input focus.) ¹: And, if not Firefox, then there'll definitely be *some* X11 app which does this ☺ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1625846 Title: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1625846/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away
I think bug 1671771 is fundamentally the wrong solution (to this problem; it does need to be fixed). The problem here is that XMir is not behaving like a spec-compliant X11 window manager. Unless we want to require Mir servers to implement X11 window management, this is not something that we can do with extra Mir support. One relevant section of one of the relevant X11 protocols is https://tronche.com/gui/x/icccm/sec-4.html#s-4.1.7 Specifically - Firefox is using the Locally Active focus model. It has the focus attribute set to “true” in the WM_HINTS, and has set WM_TAKE_FOCUS on its window. This means that it (a) expects to receive focus (and receives focus in/focus out events) but (b) only ever expects to be given focus to its top-level window, and will manually manage the focus of its subwindows itself. XMir is in a position to do this - it doesn't matter which of the client's windows Mir thinks has input focus. As long as *any* of the client's windows have input focus XMir will receive input events and can set the X11 focus as appropriate.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1196239] Re: Add support for fake modes on laptop screens which only have one
So, migrating discussion from a bug marked as duplicate: OK, there's a design discussion to be had here. In these cases, mirout is correct - your display has exactly one mode it can be driven at. X adds a whole bunch of fake “standard” modes, but they're just that - fake. Selecting one of the fake modes does not change the video mode; instead, it scales the rendering up to the monitor's mode. What is the user requirement here? I'd prefer the Mir API to accurately reflect the capabilities of the system, but one of those capabilities is that we can scale content. If the user-requirement is “I'd like everything on my screen to look bigger”, we can do that. Indeed, this seems to be the Apple approach - https://support.apple.com /en-au/HT202471 - there's the “optimal resolution” button, and then the “make everything larger or smaller” option. (Note that the user requirement *cannot* be “I'd like to change the display mode”, because Unity 7 doesn't change the display mode in these cases ☺) ** Changed in: mir Status: Triaged => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1196239 Title: Add support for fake modes on laptop screens which only have one To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1196239/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1628744] [NEW] Modesetting picks incorrect card as output master
Public bug reported: I have a rather strange setup, with an nvidia and AMD card, both with connected displays. (Connected to the same monitors, in fact). The AMD card is the EFI primary card, and is what drives the kernel framebuffer. This is correct; it's the one that's plugged into both monitors. modesetting, for soume reason, picks the nvidia card as the output master and the AMD card as an output slave. This is good, in that it can drive both my monitors, and bad in that rendering on the nvidia card is literally seconds-per-frame (presumably it lacks reclocking support). >> My concern with adding cancellation behaviour is that there'll be no existing client or toolkit that expects it, and we can't make it opt-in (like the opt-in touch cancellation support). >That's a good point but extra events are kind of opt-in already with zero code change for most clients. If clients see an event they don't understand they should ignore it and not treat it as an error. Yeah, they (probably) won't crash; they'll just have broken behaviour. Failure to act on a BUTTON_CANCEL means that the client is erroneously treating that button as pressed, with whatever behaviour that entails. Which is exactly this bug; adding BUTTON_CANCELLED support won't actually fix this bug without also fixing clients :) As you note in your subsequent responses, the click-move-release case is handled explicitly, either in the application or sometimes in the toolkit (for the “clicked” event). If we add a KEY_CANCELLED state to the existing KEY_DOWN/KEY_UP states, we'll likewise need to fix the rest of the universe, starting with the toolkits and moving up :) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libinput in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1547864 Title: libinput doesn't handle EV_KEY event with a value of 255 (BUTTON_CANCLED), to support Android home buttons To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mir/+bug/1547864/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1547864] Re: libinput doesn't handle EV_KEY event with a value of 255 (BUTTON_CANCLED), to support Android home buttons
I guess what I'm arguing for is adding a key-is-cancellable quirk to libinput and only emitting a KEY_DOWN/KEY_UP pair once the device has emitted KEY_UP :) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libinput in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1547864 Title: libinput doesn't handle EV_KEY event with a value of 255 (BUTTON_CANCLED), to support Android home buttons To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mir/+bug/1547864/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
