[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 890636] Re: help

2011-11-18 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your
report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can
better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it.

Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For
help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally,
in the report please include:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System ->
About Ubuntu.
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by
checking in Synaptic.
3) What happened and what you expected to happen.

The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide
variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .
Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make
your bug report much more complete. Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 862326] Re: screensaver not visible after resume from suspend on multihead

2011-10-06 Thread Jamie Strandboge
This is a problem in both unity 3d and 2d. I think this is in X.

** Package changed: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) => xorg (Ubuntu)

** Tags added: apport-collected ubuntu

** Description changed:

  I use a Thinkpad x201s with Intel drivers. When I suspend and resume
  without an external monitor, on resume gnome-screensaver works correctly
  (the dialog is shown, and I can enter my password).

  When I plug an external monitor into the VGA port and use Displays to
  set the laptop LCD as 'off' and the external monitor as 'on' (so that
  only the external monitor is used), when I suspend and then resume, the
  password dialog is (sometimes) briefly displayed on the LCD, and then
  both screens go blank. I can see and move a cursor on the external
  monitor, but I can't see the password prompt, though it will receive
  keyboard input as I can blindly enter my password and it'll unlock, but
  after unlocking there is still just a black screen (if I move my mouse,
  I can see that it unlocked though because I can see the cursor change as
  it moves over my open windows). Typically I must 'Ctrl+Alt+F1' and
  'Ctrl+Alt+F7' back in order to see the password prompt properly
  displayed.

  ProblemType: Bug

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 790482] Re: fglrx-installer

2011-06-03 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 711954] [NEW] Cannot use external monitor at its native resolution

2011-02-02 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have a laptop with a native resolution of 1440x900. If I connect my HP
w2207h monitor to my laptop via the VGA port and open display
properties, then I can mirror at 1440x900 just fine. If I try to have
the HP monitor use its native resolution of 1680x1050, then the monitor
goes blank (whether or not I turn off the laptop screen). If I try to
login with the monitor at 1680x1050 and the LCD off, gdm displays ok,
but the monitor flashes a bunch of purple colors and never displays
anything (but the LCD does turn off).

This was working for a while in natty, but no more.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507148] Re: [lucid] desktop runs out of video memory on ATI Radeon Mobility 7500

2010-12-02 Thread Jamie Strandboge
@Andy -- I'm saying that using what is in official Lucid works fine for
everything except the guest session (which I never tried until comment
#94). If I run my automated tests on official Lucid, there are no
'reserve failed for wait' log messages ever. If I run my automated tests
with your kernel, there are 'reserve failed for wait' log messages, but
everything appears otherwise ok and the guest session now works. There
are more 'reserve failed for wait' log messages by far when running
glxgears than anything else.

I have tested the driver on Andy's kernel quite a bit (all with KMS/EXA -- the
default in a Lucid install):
* suspend/resume works
* compiz works
* metacity works
* switching the System/Preferences/Appearance/Visual Effects to 'None',
'Normal' and 'Extra' all work
* firefox works
* OpenOffice.org writer works
* flash works
* full screen totem totem movie works
* ~12 hours of automated tests with glxgears, totem playing a large flv file in
repeat mode, and many applications launched/closed all works as well as before

In addition, the kernel has seen real world testing on another system
(also T42 with the same radeon 7500 chipset) with firefox, flash plugin,
wine, evolution, empathy, suspend/resume, etc, for one work day. That
system did not have any of the spurious log messages (no extended use of
3D other than compiz effects). In terms of performance, the system feels
the same, but I have not performed instrumented performance tests.

I looked at the 'drm/radeon/kms: Silent spurious error message' patch
and I think it is ok to push Andy's kernel with this patch applied. I
will continue to keep Andy's current kernel on the other system for
continued real world testing and report back if there are any issues,
but I think getting the fix into lucid-proposed is a go. Once if lucid-
proposed I can retest with my automated script and get that kernel real
world testing as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507148] Re: [lucid] desktop runs out of video memory on ATI Radeon Mobility 7500

2010-11-30 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Ok, I have installed this kernel in a couple of places and am waiting to
see real world use. That said, I have a script that:

1. plays a 500M flv file in totem, in repeat mode
2. launches 'glxgears -geometry 1400x1050' (the native resolution of the
display, but not full screen mode)
3. launches /usr/bin/gnome-*, firefox and oowriter one at a time, in a loop

This brings the system to a crawl, which is fine but with the updated kernel I
get a bunch of messages like this in kern.log:
[ 2168.016130] radeon :01:00.0: ec7c4600 reserve failed for wait

It wasn't until I added glxgears to the mix that these messages started
showing up every couple of seconds (prior to running glxgears it only
happened once). I booted back into the latest official lucid kernel and
ran the same script and saw those messages did not show up in kern.log.
The system seems otherwise fine (ie no crashes), but I don't know if
that message is purely informational or an indication of something going
wrong.

I can also say that with the latest official lucid kernel, the guest
session is completely unusable, though differently than from Vish in the
upstream bug. After upgrading to the patched lucid kernel, the guest
session is fully usable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507148] Re: [lucid] desktop runs out of video memory on ATI Radeon Mobility 7500

2010-11-30 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I have installed the i386 lucid kernel and so far have no problems. On
the unpatched kernel it would sometimes take a while to manifest
(sometimes days on my machine) so I'd like to continue testing for a few
days before saying there are no regressions.

I can verify that the new fix doesn't regress Lucid release (which has
the original fix) if provided a Lucid kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 645377] [NEW] resolution incorrectly detected on radeon 7500

2010-09-22 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

In the installer, in gdm and on login, the resolution of my 1400x1050
display is incorrectly detected as 1600x1024. This results in banding
and other issues. I can choose 1400x1050 by going to
System/Preferences/Monitors and then my login session is fine (gdm is
still wrong of course).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 627055] Re: [lucid] X received SIGQUIT

2010-09-21 Thread Jamie Strandboge
This happened again and my current theory is this may be due to update-
manager and automatic installation of security updates, either when the
kernel or when firefox is updated (maybe only when prompted to update a
conffile?). I haven't been able to track this down yet, but this has
only ever happened on systems with automatic security updates.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626723] Re: gdm restarts on initial login

2010-09-01 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Ok, I rebooted and dug around a bit.

When I boot up, when gdm starts I go to vt1 and see it initially starts on tty7:
$ ps auxww | grep [/]usr/bin/X
root  1329  0.4  0.4 135052 17908 tty7 Ss+  11:19   0:00 /usr/bin/X :0
-nr -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-hUHdva/database -nolisten tcp vt7
$ sudo lsof -p 1329 | grep tty
Xorg1329 root6u   CHR4,7  0t0   4611 /dev/tty7

If I go to vt7, I see the gdm prompt. When I try to login with gdm, gdm
restarts on tty8:
$ ps auxww | grep [/]usr/bin/X
root  3759  4.9  0.8 153928 33828 tty8 Ss+  11:22   0:16 /usr/bin/X :0
-br -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-eigZMv/database -nolisten tcp
$ sudo lsof -p 3759 | grep tty
Xorg3759 root7r   CHR4,8  0t0   4612 /dev/tty8

If I now go to vt7, I see boot messages like:
* Starting Commun Unix Printing System: cupsd[OK]

But after all the boot messages, the last thing I see is (leading space
intended):
 * Checking battery state...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 627055] Re: [lucid] X crash

2010-08-31 Thread Jamie Strandboge
So in researching this some more, I found these, which describes problems with
the X server receiving SIGQUIT with xorg 1.7.3 when the Enter key is pressed:
http://www.spinics.net/linux/lists/xorg/msg45959.html
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=803357
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/17472
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/17119

I'm don't know if this is the same bug, but it seems possible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 627055] Re: [lucid] X crashe

2010-08-31 Thread Jamie Strandboge
After thinking about this more, I don't believe that the system
rebooted. I did not witness the crash, but it was described to me as a
reboot. This system does not use a splash (because of a pymouth bug) but
does use 'quiet' and so a gdm restart would look very similar to a
reboot. When I checked the kern.log I did not see that the system
rebooted at the time of the crash, but checking dhcpd logs indicates
that network manager did restart dhclient3, which is consistent with an
X crash but no restart. I have updated the title accordingly.

Regardless, the SIGQUIT did happen which resulted in significant data
loss for the user.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 627055] Re: [lucid] X crashes and forces a system restart

2010-08-31 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I neglected to mention that I feel this is probably radeon specific, as
I've seen it happen repeatedly on 3 different radeon laptops. In several
circumstances this resulted in loss of data, one of which was extremely
unfortunate timing. It has happened with and without compiz enabled. I
do not have a reproducer.
