[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 135715] Re: X Should Use Logrotate

2015-02-03 Thread Ken Sharp
This isn't a duplicate at all. The other bug is asking for MORE log
files, not for them to be rotated.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 274870
Xorg should keep more rotated logs

** Description changed:

- Wishlist item!
-
- Sometimes, especially when crashes/reboots are involved, two log files
- (/var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old) just ain't enough.
-
[Almost] every other log file in /var/log uses logrotate... couldn't
  X.org do likewise?

I understand that this isn't a high-priority item, but it would be
  really great.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1271166] [NEW] Gómez Peer under Wine appears on the lock screen

2014-01-21 Thread Ken Sharp
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

When running the Gómez Peer under Wine (including upstream), the
application is still visible on top of the lock screen.

Nothing running should be visible on top of the lock screen and this is
a security concern.

To work around this I run Wine with WINEDLLOVERRIDES=wined3d=

Wine can be blamed for this, but X (or whatever provides the lock screen
- Gnome?) shouldn't allow applications to break through the lock

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with AMD Radeon/Mobility Radeon HD 2000-4000 cards in Quantal

2013-02-05 Thread Ken Sharp
I'm on Precise. I installed fglrx-updates which, for some reason, has
had this broken version backported to Precise's fglrx-updates, but you
would expect that from fglrx-updates I guess.

fglrx itself has problems and I described my workaround to that at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1114520

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1114520] [NEW] Graphical Wine applications fail to load

2013-02-03 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

Graphical applications that run under Wine, such as the SlingPlayer 1.5 will
fail to load with the fglrx package installed.
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=versioniId=11492

Using fglrx-updates used to allow everything to run correctly, and with
a significant improvement in native graphics quality and speed. This is
now blocked by Bug #1058040 and Bug #1113331.

Although these two .debs appear to be the same, there is something
fundamentally different.

Works:
http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/restricted/f/fglrx-installer-updates/fglrx-updates_8.960-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
Fails:
http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/restricted/f/fglrx-installer/fglrx_8.960-0ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb

This works fine with the old fglrx-update package.

Workaround is to install this old fglrx-update package manually and
lock the version.

No, I'm in Precise and had fglrx-updates installed. Ran a dist-upgrade and now
it doesn't work.
Purged that and installed fglrx and the problem has gone away.

The older version of fglrx-updates added... I don't know but it reported
my graphics card correctly when using glxinfo, fglrx doesn't.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1047610] Re: Xorg freeze when logging out

2012-10-04 Thread Ken Sharp
As X is started for each user, control can be returned to the actual
machine by killing that particular X session via SSH once the user has
attempted to log out.

ALL input via the keyboard and mouse is completely ignored until X is
killed. Even the CAPS LOCK button doesn't work.

I cannot find anything in any of the logs that suggest there has ever
been a problem. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place?

I have no idea why this has been sent to the fglrx queue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1047610] Re: Xorg freeze when logging out

2012-09-10 Thread Ken Sharp
I now cannot shutdown. Presumably because logging out is the first step.

SSH in and sudo halt gives me a garbled screen and the laptop fails to
power off.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1047610] [NEW] Xorg freeze when logging out user

2012-09-07 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

I use two accounts on my computer.
1000 - My main, useful account.
1001 - For testing without messing up my settings on 1000.
I always log in 1000 first and log in a second time with 1001.

When I first start the computer I can log in and out multiple times
without any problems (I've tried).

After using the computer for an amount of time it starts getting a bit
slow and clunky, partly thanks to the amount of stuff that gets pushed
to swap, and partly thanks to another bug which means I have to start
Unity over and over.

To try and reduce the memory footprint I log UID 1000 out. Wonderfully
this is not successful and I end up staring at the background image for
UID 1000's profile and nothing else. The mouse and the keyboard become
completely useless. Even the NUM LOCK light cannot be switched off.

CTRL+ALT+Backspace and CTRL+ALT+DEL do nothing, but that's because the
keyboard does nothing.

The only solution is SSH in from my phone and force a reboot (or a halt
when I get sick of it).

I cannot see anything in the logs about a crash but then I don't know
where I should be looking or what I should be looking for.

This didn't happen in Natty but it's been a while since I used UID 1001,
and I cannot remember the last time I logged out UID 1000 while using
it. I definitely cannot pinpoint when this started to occur.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1023207] Re: Xorg crash

2012-07-10 Thread Ken Sharp
I got my system working again by:

1. Loading failsafe X
2. Downloading and installing the latest fglrx
3. Rebooted (but then Wine wouldn't start - this is usually a sign that fglrx
is NOT installed)
4. Installed the fglrx-updates packages
5. Rebooted

I'm back to normal for now AFAICT. This doesn't explain what happened,
however.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 878235] Re: System unusable after update

2011-11-06 Thread Ken Sharp
Well I had an updated version of fglrx installed (not from the repos)
which worked fine before this update.

I tried to install from the repos but there were all kinds of errors, it
also would not reinstall. I have finally managed to force uninstall the
latest driver and reinstall the driver from the repos. I am now back in
my system, working correctly.

I will avoid the latest fglrx until I can be certain that something in
Ubuntu won't break it during the next update.

It therefore appears that something in xorg-server is incompatible with
fglrx 8.881, in this version of Ubuntu at least.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 878235] [NEW] System unusable after update

2011-10-19 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

I have JUST ran an update. Now, once the system has booted I am
presented with nothing but a blank screen. I cannot change consoles or
do ANYTHING with the machine unless running X in failsafe mode (which I
am doing now).

There were three xserver updates, so I have no idea which one has broken
my system, but one of them has! (apt history should be attached showing
which were updated)

If I can figure out how to roll back an update I will be able to report
which package, so any help appreciated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 878235] Re: System unusable after update

2011-10-19 Thread Ken Sharp
I have downgraded xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common but the problem
persists. I have also managed to downgrade libimobiledevice2 and
libdvdread4 but all the kerberos stuff is blocked for downgrade by Bug
878263.

The logs mean nothing to me. Isn't there anything in the Xorg logs?

Whatever is the cause it has permanently broken my system!

I have purged xserver-xorg-video-intel as it is useless on my system.

I know the packages *should* be unrelated, but downgrading the suspected
packages didn't work either.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760636] [NEW] Installing Skype 5.3 in Wine causes system lock-up

2011-04-14 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

I've logged this against fglrx, but there is nothing remotely helpful in
any of the logs to tell me what is actually causing the problem.

When attempting to install the Windows version of Skype 5.3 in Wine the
entire system locks up. A system tray icon loads then everything stops
responding. The hard drive still flashes so the computer is,
apparently, up to something, but I cannot use it and have to power it
off.

Wine should not have the ability to hang the entire system, so not a
Wine bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 371750] Re: Wine d3d9 test causes unhandled exception

2010-06-10 Thread Ken Sharp
The crash does indeed still occur with Lucid.

I have attached an updated backtrace with the latest Wine git. I added
the -dbg package for the graphics drivers too but they don't seem to
have made any difference.

** Attachment added: wine-1.2-rc2-251-ge533ec4 console output
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/50058197/d3d9_test.log

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Running the d3d9 tests from the current git Wine
  (wine-1.1.20-185-g2d8f252) causes an unhandled exception.

  From #winehq:
TBBle KenSharp: Anyway, looks like you're in Mesa3D software rendering, and
it and Wine are not getting along. Is that intentional?
KenSharp i'm using whatever comes with Ubuntu 8.10 for the ATI Radeon 5900.
fglrx simply doesn't work so I don't use it
TBBle Neat. You probably want to install libgl1-mesa-dri (or something like
that). I'd blame a bug in mesa's software rasteriser for crashing when
compiling a GLSL program.
  KenSharp fair enough
  KenSharp libgl1-mesa-dri is installed
TBBle Well, then I stand by my suggestion that it's mesa crashing, and it
shouldn't be. What's xdriinfo say, BTW?
TBBle There's Wine debug channels that'll dump the shaders being produced,
that would let you see what the GLSL being fed to Mesa looks like, and then you
could chase it up with Mesa developers, or even write yourself a test harness
if you're up to it.
KenSharp i have no programming skills unfortunately. my days ended with
BASIC
KenSharp Xlib: extension XFree86-DRI missing on display :20.0.
KenSharp Screen 0: not direct rendering capable.
  KenSharp that's not good!

If you are aware of Wine, you will be aware that there are many debug
channels available, but I do not know enough about this kind of error to
know what further information would be useful (including which package
  is causing the problem).

Graphics card is an ATI Radeon 5900. I am not running fglrx.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 371750] Re: Wine d3d9 test causes unhandled exception

2010-05-10 Thread Ken Sharp
Hard to tell if this is fixed or not.

Tested using the Lucid live CD as I don't feel like risking my system
with a full upgrade yet (will do this in the next month).

The test throws up a load of screen garbage over and over again and
eventually stops. Because the screen is garbage it is impossible to
tell what is going on. Top confirms the test is still running. Killing
the test causes the system to shut down and turn off, which isn't very
helpful. As it's a live CD, apport-collect cannot be used.

Will try again in the next few weeks when the system is installed
properly, but initially it looks like a problem still exists.

2009-08-27 Thread Ken Sharp
apport-collect apparently doesn't show up until Jaunty, I'm using Intrepid.
Is there another way to collect this data?
apport-cli or apport-gtk seem to be my options.

The unhandled exception no longer occurs, but that could simply mean
that Wine handles the exception, the test still fails in latest git.
