The GNOME issue is completely separate from the problem of "triggering layout change on press", as GNOME does not use the kxb behavior at all - it actually disables any options set using setxkbmap - instead it listens to keyboard events and implements its own custom behavior that mimics Mac OS. Note that with the current release (19.10, but also tested 20.04) on Kubuntu with xserver 1.20 that *does not* include the patch from freedesktop.org bug 865, layout switching works on release - as requested. Public bug reported: Using the clickable touchpad on the Dell Precision 5520, the "right mouse button" (an area marked on the bottom right of the touchpad) no longer produces an RMB event when clicked. This used to work in Artful. More details: The Dell Precision touchpad is "clickable" - i.e. when pressed firmly it produces a click sound and triggers an LMB event even without raising the finger from the touchpad. This allows you to move the cursor around quickly and clicking on things without having to stop and raise your finger from the surface. Additionally, the touchpad has a marked bottom area that is split into two horizontally. When clicking (not tapping) on the right part of the bottom area, it should simulate a right mouse button click, while on the left part it should simulate a left mouse button click. This used to work well under Artful, but does no longer work in Bionic - both sides produce a left click (with some caveats, the left side doesn't seem to work so well, but that is probably another issue). I've installed and tested Norbert's PPA and it works great. I have ALT+SHIFT set as the layout switch shortcut and with the PPA I can now use Eclipse's ALT+SHIFT+ keyboard shortcuts. Kudos Norbert! Sorry it took so long - because the PPA is only for LTS releases, I had to wait until it was safe for me to update to the 18.04 beta (i.e. no urgent work scheduled). I have ran the tool a few times because it seemed to be crashing - at first it wouldn't run at all complaining about missing PyQT, so I installed python-qt-binding; then it seemed to be crashing due to missing pathlib, so I installed that as well and ran it again. Currently, Alon Bar-Lev's patch (xorg-server-1.12.2-xkb-switch-on- release.patch) applies cleanly against Xorg 1.17.2 from Fedora 22, but apparently has no effect - with `setxkbmap -print` output like this: xkb_keymap { xkb_keycodes { include evdev+aliases(qwerty) }; xkb_types { include complete }; xkb_compat{ include complete+ledscroll(group_lock)}; xkb_symbols { include pc+us+il(lyx):2+us:3+inet(evdev)+group(alt_shift_toggle) }; xkb_geometry { include pc(pc105) }; }; Holding ALT+SHIFT (without releasing) immediately changes the layout. Apparently the problem has something to do with GNOME's new layout switching handling. If I set Modifiers-only switch to next source to Disabled in the keyboard shortcut editor, then run setxkbmap -option grp:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggle Everything works fine with the patch. While Ilya's hack works for many people, and as much as I would like to see this fixed, I understand why it is unacceptable to the developers. ... there's two-ish ppl working on input at them moment, both are badly overloaded because there's a lot of bugs and plenty new features that ppl cry out for. so this bug has less to do with purist reasons, it's more along the lines of i've got so many things to do that don't break the spec, they get priority. So I understand that this issue is currently not worked on by Xorg developers. Priorities are a good thing, and I'm currently comfortable with the pragmatic approach of the downstream distributions applying Ilya's patch in their packages (which works fine for a lot of happy users who have reported as such - I have yet to hear a report where Ilya's patch is not improving behavior for multi-language users). Public bug reported: Running on current trusty (though is has been going on for a while), when I'm using KDE and I switch to another VT, when I get back into KDE the X server is eating up all the CPU (of one core). After a few minutes it settles down. Also, while the CPU is loaded, sometimes (not always but most times), my keyboard is not responding, and the desktop behaves as if one of the keyboard switch states is stuck - for example usually it looks like the ALT key is stuck and when I try to click on windows with the mouse, I get the move window behavior, as if I'm holding the ALT key. The behavior of CPU load is 100% reproduceable under KDE when doing a VT switch. It never happens when I use XFCE or GNOME shell (I wanted to try unity, but I'm having problems installing it). Also, it often happens when I get back from sleep to KDE (not 100% though). I forgot to mention my system settings - I'm using Thinkpad T420 with Nvidia Optimus. I am *not* using nvidia-prime, as that setup didn't work for me, instead I'm using the bumblebee setup where X is configured only for the Intel graphics, and bumblebee is using a second X server to render 3D games. I have the Nvidia binary driver 331-updates from canonical installed, and not nouveou. I'm not using an xorg.conf, but if I try to generate one using 'X -configure', the generated file includes only the Intel setup. Today - wanting to get the latest release of the Nvidia 310 series driver, I installed xorg-edgers, upgraded the system and installed nvidia-310. After the reboot (to kernel 3.7), bumblebee starts fine but optirun fails to run any 3D application - e.g. glxgears. (In reply to comment #108) I don't know what they have done in Ubuntu but 12.04 understands both press and release. Layout switching happens on release. Ubuntu have simply applied Ilya's patch (one of the revisions attached here) to fix the layout switching problem. If you press Alt you see the global menu and after release HUD uppears. This is a different behavior and one that works with the pristine X.org server - the ALT key, when used without any other shift keys, fires down when pressed and up when released. The Ubuntu HUD listens for this sequence and triggers when ALT is used like that without any other shift key. The problematic behavior (as documented in this lengthy bug report - kitates, please read the discussion), is that when you press down on the second shift key, X.org fires the keyboard layout change (problem 1) and also immediately fires the up event for the second shift key, even though the user is still holding the key down (problem 1). Problem 1 means that when the user wants to use shift1+shift2+key as a keyboard shortcut (when shift1 and shift2 are the shift keys used for layout switching, for example ALT+SHIFT or CTRL+ALT), then the user will inadvertently also trigger a layout switching that wasn't supposed to happen. Problem 2 means that the actual keyboard shortcut will never actually trigger because when the user holds down key, even though all keys are physically held down X.org only acknowledges that shift1 and key are held down. Looks like everything has been fixed. But if you use Ctrl or Alt for layout switching you still can't use this key for anything more, it's exclusived :( So ridiculous. It shouldn't work like that - I've tested the Ubuntu built X.org (with Ilya's patch) and it worked properly when using CTRL+ALT as the keyboard switching. Same problem with the lice CD, same problem with Kubuntu. The performance is very bad with Unity 3D and Kwin with desktop effects, to the point where using the desktop is not possible. Using Unity 2D or KWin without effects makes the desktop usable, just slow. Public bug reported: I'm using a couple of computers based on Intel DQ35JO board, which has a GMA graphics chip: $ lspci | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) Running any sort of 3D graphics is incredibly slow, for example: $ glxgears -fullscreen Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate. 51 frames in 5.1 seconds = 10.010 FPS which is rather good comparing to the behavior of glxgears without fullscreen and maximized (showing the window borders and panels) which is aroudn 5 FPS. This is the same for both Unity 2D, standard 3D Unity (in which also just moving windows around is painful) and KDE (in which everything is ever slower which makes KDE practically unusable). I've had the same behavior since I installed Ubuntu 11.10, and its the same now with the 12.04 alpha. When I run glxgears on the Kubuntu machine, its not running in synchronized mode and the fullscreen framerate is reported around 50 FPS, though the movement is almost as choppy as in the Ubuntu machine (so I don't understand what is going on). In the Kubuntu machine, KDE can't do OpenGL desktop effects at all - I get errors when I try to enable that, though glxgears does work. A slightly older machine (running chipset 82801H - ICH8 family) works fine. Input methods may be a problem as i dont think anyone who is interested in this is using IM. I dont know why - maybe IM users dont use layout switching shortcuts, maybe they don't use shortcuts at all? The following comments were made by Peter Hutterer (an X.org input developer) on the corresponding bug in RedHat bugzilla ( https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=660254 ): (In reply to comment #6) implementing this behaviour requires guesswork that I'm not sure is safe in a number of setups. ... afaict, the desired behaviour for a ctrl+shift groupchange is: ctrl down → set Control modifier shift down → set Shift modifier if (other key pressed) send event Contrl+Shift+other key else if (ctrl || shift released) change group The XKB map for left control in this case is: key LCTL { [ Control_L, ISO_Next_Group ] }; So whenever ISO_Next_Group is pressed, you still need to know which modifier to set in case the group action isn't executed. The XkbSA_SetMod, XkbSA_LockMod, etc. actions provide the modifiers set for a given key, hence why it works currently. This information comes from the client when the xkb map is loaded and is used to trigger the modifier flags for a given key. The XkbSA_LockGroup behaviour (which is triggered at ISO_Next_Group) does not have this field (adding it would break ABI), so you need to guess which modifiers to set if you didn't trigger this action. This is the main stumbling point that I found and if you look at Ilya's patch that's where he needs the big hack that I'm not comfortable at all with it. Now, I don't know if there are layouts where the modifier mask would be different on the second level as opposed to the first (and Ilya's hack or a similar attempt would fail completely) but there's so many layouts that it'll take a while to get through them all. Ilya - this is hardly my area of expertise, so if you can address these issues - either by commenting here, on the RedHat bugzilla or by changing the patch - I would greatly appreciate that. I have seen this behavior as well in the patched X-Server, and I may have also seen this with the original Maverick X-Server - though I'm not sure about it. I get this bug triggered only by using Synergy, but with almost 100% consistency: I use Ubuntu 10.04 as a Synergy server, and 10.10 is the client. If I move my mouse to the 10.10 screen and try to switch languages by using ALT-SHIFT on the server keyboard, I get the faulty behavior. What happens is that gnome-settings-daemon - which is normally responsible for switching layouts when you switch applications - starts switching through all the layouts uncontrollably as if the switching keys are stuck, and takes up 100% CPU. If you start typing anywhere, you'd get characters from all layouts mixed together. At this point, if you try to use the keyboard layout indicator in the session applet, you'd see that its stuck and does not respond to requests to set the layout. Finally, sending TERM to gnome-settings-daemon will not stop it and you must use the KILL signal (-9). I believe this is a gnome-settings-daemon, mostly as I can also cause gnome-settings-daemon to spike to 100% CPU usage simply by sending it a TERM signal while working normally. Sorry about the late reply - I'm moving to a new apartment and haven't got much time. It took me a while to figure out what is KMS, and then to try to disable it. When I add i915.modeset=0 to the kernel command line, it complains that its an unknown boot option and modinfo shows no such parameter supported by the i915 module. for some reason I can't remove i915 in order to reinstall it with the option on the command line (it complains that the module is in use even if I shutdown everything X), so I added a modprobe config file in a final effort to turn it off. With the patch applied to 2.6.31.2 , I could not reproduce the screen corruption problem that is the original complaint of this ticket. I've added the patch to 2.6.31-3-generic and there is no change in behavior (although I think its crashing a bit - but I can't reproduce reliably). I also am not seeing corruption issues with the kernel update (I checked before and after and the kernel update indeed seems to be the reason).
